Captain Princess Alea Sinclair is tasked by the Emperor to be her aunt Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting, i.e. bodyguard, on their trip to the Attican Empire to rewrite their $2 trillion treaty. Behind the scenes, health issues and a cruel commanding officer make their private lives hell while they strive to maintain their public image of competence. And their stated mission isn't the only one; they must also find out what they can about an intelligent alien species the Atticans have found on a nearby planet. They act like simple pets, but due to their hypnotic mental influence, Elizabeth falls for Alea's scorned C.O. while Alea and her two new Attican friends strive desperately to understand the wily chalates. How can Alea determine the intent and the extent of the aliens' influence upon Elizabeth, the most brilliant social analyst and diplomat of the Sinclair Demesnes, before they ruin the renegotiation of this critical treaty? This is the final volume of the To Be Sinclair series. This novel contains sexual situations.
Eva Caye morphed from dilettante writer into obsessive author after a health crisis caused her to re-evaluate her life. Set 600 years in the future, the To Be Sinclair series is her vision of the greatest ruling family in the history of the galaxy. All thirteen ebooks are available on Amazon and Smashwords, with two prequels and two others set in the Sinclair universe as works-in-progress. Eva lives in Louisville, Kentucky with her magnificent husband of twenty-five years.
“How far did you get in your module on Operational Psychology?”
Kentucky author Eva Caye experienced a health crisis and turned to writing to find meaning and inspiration. Eva has completed thirteen novels in the To Be Sinclair series, most with 'Easter eggs'. Her current works-in-progress are two prequels to the series, set about 100 years in the future. She prepared for this Catalyst adventure by studying some unusual topics to support her literary efforts - building solar ovens and rocket stoves ‘to get a feel of what colonizing a planet from scratch would be like.’
Eva states in the notes that accompany this final volume of TO BE SINCLAIR - "I'm thrilled to have finished Civility, Elizabeth's book. The surprise 'family member' who shares this book with her suffers from low self-esteem on the one hand, an immaculate sense of Imperial protocols on the other, and a wide-ranging intellect and grasp of the diplomatic necessity they're both tasked to achieve. The romances are as messy as in real life, and the alien situation is much more complex than I outwardly state. I'm hoping the subtleties of their characterizations bring the reader much room for thought as they make sudden realizations on that unstated background. In other words, I thoroughly explain it for the casual readers yet leave lots of room for speculation for the dedicated series enthusiasts!’
Blending science fiction and Galactic empires and romance seems a formidable task, but for Eva the ingredients come naturally. Not having read Books 1 – 12 this reader is left to judge the series on the basis of this final volume. Her style of writing is compatible with the concept of alien figures and concepts and the moral fiber and enduring love aspects not only survive but thrive.
The story is condensed in the plot summary – ‘ Captain Princess Alea Sinclair is tasked by the Emperor to be her aunt Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting, i.e. bodyguard, on their trip to the Attican Empire to rewrite their $2 trillion treaty. How can Alea determine the intent and the extent of the aliens' influence upon Elizabeth, the most brilliant social analyst and diplomat of the Sinclair Demesnes, before they ruin the renegotiation of this critical treaty?’
Complex yes, but the manner in which Eva introduces the new reader into her strange world gradually involves us and the crises and solutions and odd creatures and alien situations become comfortable partners in a very well written adventure.
As the final volume in the To Be Sinclair series, Civility shows the strength of Eva Caye's writing. Because of a significant health crisis the author determined that venturing into her hobby of writing was a winning idea and her prolific works are testament to that. She delves fully into her work, even creating solar ovens and the like to really understand what it means to develop a new society or world. This tale is a good blend of what first may seem to be disparate elements, romance, building empires, and science fiction, but Caye is a pro and the plot flows seamlessly. That along with interesting characters and you have a solid work of science fiction fantasy. Alea Sinclair is her aunt Elizabeth's lady in waiting, i.e., bodyguard, and is a strong character figuring things out behind the scenes as they involve treaties, and alien influences. Highly recommend for an involved and detailed science fiction read.
