C.A. Asbrey is a writer of mysteries, and a fan of all things Victorian and obscure. A former member of law enforcement in Scotland, she developed a deep interest in early forensics and detection methods, particularly during the 19th Century, working in the field. This extensive research into early detectives and the tools available to them acted as the foundation for developing the characters in her The Innocents Mystery Series. She likes her mysteries twisty, complex, and intricate; through a fog of history and a touch of light humor.

“Innocent as Sin” is the second book in C.A. Asbrey’s captivating The Innocents Series, but I got so excited by an announcement I saw by the author, I ended up reading the third installment before the second. Fortunately, it didn’t affect my enjoyment of either book. In fact, the three books I’ve read by this author are some of the best I’ve ever come across. She’s come up with a winning combination of subject matter (a female Pinkerton detective in mid-1800s America), main characters (two infamous outlaws and a determined Scotswoman with a painful past), pitch-perfect dialog (between the opposing forces and the colorful array of supporting characters), humor and sexual attraction. I mean really, what else could you want?

I forgot to mention that it’s obvious the author has gone to great lengths to research every single detail, from the science that was available at the time to the fashions and the manner of speech. Reading these compelling novels is like being transported back in time. Her writing is concise, lyrical and smooth, and the repartee between the three protagonists is so real and honest, you don’t doubt for a moment the authenticity of the scenes.

It’s impossible for me to say what I’ve liked best about this series, but the chemistry between Abigail McKay and Nat Quinn is believable, electrifying and pitch-perfect. These books would please even hardcore romance fans, yet they are so much more than romance novels, or detective novels, or historic novels. The Innocents Series has it all, and laugh out loud humor to boot. I still haven’t found out if there are more installments in this series, but I’m hopeful! Regardless, I will read anything by this author. I think she could make a grocery list sound intriguing and suspenseful!

Enjoyable read

A female Pinkerton detective and the charming outlaw made a excellent team and the story was enjoyable on that count alone.
The research that the author has done on the era and the dialogues made the story perfect.
I loved the romance, the detective story and the historical era, all three combined. Delightful read.

I received a copy of this book by the author via Booktasters in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Booktasters and C.A. Asbrey for another great read!

This was the second book of The Innocents Mystery Series. After the first one I was eager to read more of the author and to see how the journey of the trio continued. I was not disappointed - it is a highly enjoyable read!

The book tells the events following the trio's split-up at the end of the first book. Once again the characters meet in the middle of another case of Abi's in Everlasting. She's working alongside a famous bounty hunter who never brings in his prisoners alive - Frank McCully. Nat and Jake decide to stay in town and help Abi to turn in Frank, especially after Jake's outburst one day. He nearly strangles Abi because of his 'irritable heart'. The ghosts from his past follow him everywhere and the sinister scenes won't leave his mind, making him do and say things he later deeply regrets. It all goes well except for the fact that Abi gets seriously injured by a shot to the head and Nat and Jake don't know if she is going to survive. They place her under the care of Dr. Bartlett and leave town, hoping for the best. Nat's world is ruined, he's devastated and finally realises that she is the only woman he wants. After some time not having news from her, she finds them in Pettigo where there's a poker tournament. The roads are closed due to the snow and no one can possibly leave the town. Abi has come to talk to Nat and she's changed as well - she has finally admitted her feelings for the outlaw and while the two try to confess their love to one another and decide whether it is worth giving it a try, a murder and a suicide case fill up their days with investigations. They get to the bottom of things and prove once again that the three work best when they are together, even when they're still on the opposite sides of the law. But is the love between Nat and Abi strong enough to withstand every obstacle on the way and last even when the case is solved?

Very fast-paced as the first book, once again I was feeling as though I was watching a TV series; there are many scenes composed of dialogue only which helps you to move quickly onwards into the story, the characters deepen even more and get more complex at the same time. Marked by C.A. Asbrey's light humour, the conversations are fresh and funny, and the methods used to solve a case back then were also very descriptive and detailed. It is obvious that the author knows this kind of stuff, the different forensic techniques used by detectives at that time. It was really interesting to learn about all that.

Unlike the first book, where there was a big information dump at the end, this one depicts the events gradually and coherently, leaving clues here and there and thus making it more engaging for the reader. The author builds up the tension and suspense so skillfully that you can't just read one more chapter and stop. You need to finish the book, you need to know what happens next! Here, we are slowly led across all the clues but even so, I wasn't aware of whodunnit until the very end, which was good, I kept wondering and wanting to learn more details. I had the chance to try and fabricate my own theories, think about the case and try to guess who the murderer is.

Innocent as Sin has it all - mystery and crime, chase of the bad ones, funny scenes (the last one was amazing - Abi's sweet little revenge after being underestimated once again by the outlaws, I loved it!), angry outbursts, life-and-death situations and last but certainly not least, the much anticipated romance between Nat and Abi. It was interesting to see Abigail being more vulnerable, caring and affectionate after the incident as she finally admitted her feelings for Nat, like he admitted his for her. However, she's still the opinionated and headstrong woman that we know from the first book. Nat and Jake's sense of justice and of treating women with respect is still as strong as before and here they show a bit more of their more tender and compassionate sides as well, as both are so protective of Abi. We learn more about the three main characters, about their past and how it influenced their personalities, how they became the people they are now. I liked the newly introduced characters and especially Dr. Fox and his fiancée.

I also liked that the book was somehow divided into two parts: the first one was about Abi's new case, chasing Frank and pretending to be an ordinary fiancée of a bank manager, and the second one about the solving of a murder case along with Nat and Jake. We got not only one but two cases to follow and solve, both of them intriguing and complex. They showed that Nat and Jake can lead a normal life if they choose to, although they will always be wanted which is the main reason for Abi not wanting to get involved with a criminal. The relationships between Abi, Nat and Jake strengthen but are also tested and show how much they care about each other. Abi and Nat's love and affection for one another has grown so much (along with Jake's desire to 'teach Abi a lesson' for putting them in jail at the end) that I think a third book is a must in order to reveal what happens next. Will they finally be together? I certainly hope so. Will Jake also find someone to fall in love with? That would be interesting (and funny) to read about. And of course, I can’t wait to get involved in some more of the trio's mystery-solving adventures.

Don't pass up this book, it is a real page-turner!

Book 2 in The Innocents Mystery Series, while it can be read as a stand-alone, takes us a little further towards understanding how Jake and Nat got to where they are now. Like some of the protagonists in the second half of the book, they’re Irish immigrants; worse, they’re Irish Catholic immigrants and fell prey to the hatred, prejudice, and violence of the immigrants who were there before them. Jake’s experience led to his suffering from ‘irritable heart’ - what we call today, PTSD or post-traumatic stress syndrome - resulting in melancholia and ‘attacks of panic or the horrors’, suggested treatments for which are offered in the book.

That historical tidbit and others like it (for example, the doctor who is ‘an adherent of Joseph Lister’s new work in the prevention of infection’ and who does a blood transfusion which he admits does not always work) is one of the reasons I liked the book. What I didn’t like was the break between their first ‘mystery’ and the second, which was not as smooth as it could be. I could also have done without much of the sparring between Nat and Abi; I found it more distracting and less value-added than in the first book. In the end, we are left with the understanding that the West is changing and our unlikely heroes will have to make life-changing choices in the future. The review of this book was facilitated by Booktasters in exchange for a fair review.

It’s not the attention to detail, the knowledge of forensics or the ability to take you to a different place in time. No for me it is the wonderful characters, Abi, Nat and Jake that makes this an outstanding series that gets better and better. After reading the first book I could not wait to read this, the second book. I was not disappointed, it is even better than the first. A wonderful piece of writing by a very talented author. I can’t wait to read the third book. Hope to see this series made into a movie one day. I treasure my signed copy from the author.

CA Asbrey did it again! Innocent as Sin is just as addictive and charming as her debut novel, The Innocents!

I was immediately hooked from the first page and found myself transported back in time to where we left off with Nat and Abi and Jake. We get to dig a little deeper into the history of Nat and Jake and see how their past made them the men and family they became. We also get just a few hints into Abi's past as well. The connection between Nat and Abi is just as, if not more so, magnetic but yet still fragile. But this isn’t just Nat and Abi’s story - it’s also Nat and Jake’s story as well as Jake and Abi’s story. Each relationship individually and collectively is unique and provides a necessary element to the overall story.

This book had me giggling and happy-sighing, tearing up and worrying. The interaction between Jake, Nat and Abi, how their bond was nurtured, strengthened and tested, drew me into the story so strongly that I experienced the same emotions as them. Several surprises leave you struggling to breathe and not shatter into pieces.

The twists and turns of the murder mystery provided its own form of entertaining torture in following and piecing together the clues and trying to pick up on any hints that may be easily overlooked. Just reading about the forensic techniques and tools available at the time boggled my mind in their great but limited results.

Without losing momentum from the first book, this sequel delivered everything I was expecting and more! I am anxiously waiting on pins and needles for the next in the series, and will not shy away from begging for many more to follow! (no pressure! haha!) CA Asbrey quickly solidified herself as one of my favorite authors with the way her words weave and envelop me into her world!

"Danger, danger, and a lot of danger."

~ Innocent as Sin, a sequel to "The Innocents, a Mystery Novel", written by Ms. C. A. Asbrey

Every word I read, every sentence I absorb, I really felt that Ms. Asbrey has challenged herself even further with the second installment of The Innocents series. As an aspiring writer, myself, Ms. Asbrey is one of the authors I know who I get inspiration from. With her unique heroes, equally cunning villains, an equally engaging plot, and her knack for even the littlest of details, as apparent to both the first and second installments of The Innocents series, Ms. Asbrey has won my heart, no questions asked.

Our heroine Abby has put herself in a lot more danger now in her pursuit to capture our rogue, and yet charming, heroes Nat and Quinn, who are the center of this very organized group of "Innocents". Well, I'd say, much, much more danger. So much lives are at stake compared to the last story where the murder of two women was involved. Even her own life is at stake. In fact, the story's events would put you in so much dangerous atmosphere, that if you are the type of reader who wants these kinds of stories that would give you enough adrenaline rush to fly through the pages and to long for the third book, Innocent As Sin is the perfect mystery novel for you.

I've said this before, but kudos to Ms. Asbrey. My love for mystery stories was ignited because of her, our daring and unbelievaby talented heroine Abby, and our very charismatic Nat and Quinn.Thank you, Ms. Asbrey, for sharing these wonderful stories.

The. Best. Sequel.

I'd finished the book and again the author had done a great job on writing this sequel of The Innocents (1st book). I'd enjoyed reading the first one and no doubt, I'd again enjoyed reading the second book. The plot was very well written, where the author wrote how the trio, Nat Quinn, Jake Conroy and Abigail Mackay met again after few months at Everlasting, the event took place that almost killed Abi, their separation, how the met again after months at Pettigo, the crime that took place and how they'd solved it together. Every tools that they used to solved the crime taken in Pettigo was well described and as I read it, it made me felt like I was there too, helping them to solved the crime. The author also wrote about a small development in Nat and Abi relationship where it made me curious on how will it end. Other than that, in this second book, it also tell a bit on Nat and Jake's past and of course a hint of Abi's past as well. It let the readers to learn more on the main characters past life before the became what they are in the present.

By the way, I really love the female main character, Abi. She was very smart, witty and reliable just like the two male main characters. I really adored her due to her differences from the other females during her era. It showed that women are capable in everything as long as they put their head on it and not just a weak creature that need men intelligent and protection every time. I honestly recommended this book to be the-must-have-book in your shelves as it definitely worth your time to read it.

Well, as soon as I read the first book, I sent for the second. If anything, although it seems hardly possible, it’s even better than the first. Have you ever peeled and chopped vegetables with your eyes glued to the kindle? I tell you, it’s a dangerous occupation, but one I was willing to risk because I couldn’t bear to stop reading. Abigail, Jake and the delicious Nat get involved in all sorts and it becomes more and more obvious how Abi and Nat feel about each other but their very natures means they’re often at loggerheads with each other. C.A. Asbrey certainly knows her stuff; she’s obviously done a deal of research into the times and scientific knowledge and the kind of evidence that could be used in those days. She also knows how to make her characters ‘alive’ and make you see the settings and the action. Another triumph and I am looking forward to catching up with these wonderful characters when the next book comes out in November. I’ll be waiting, because I’m addicted.

Ms Asbrey does it again.Abi almost dies,Nat almost loses his mind,Jake is on a serious emotional rollercoaster.Things have changed for sure, they are no longer the same. Then something happens between Pinkerton agent Abi and outlaw Nat."There's something about the idea that makes me feel hollow and lonesome. If the time or place was right you'd be my whole world....but it ain't.There's just a big ,empty hole we pretend ain't there".
They work so well together, but do they really understand each other? How does Jake even fit in if they were to get involved romantically?I just could not put it down.

Another fantastic read. Asbrey knows her history and her forensics so very well. There were two main mystery plots, both engaging, and the second especially intriguing. Abi, Nat, and Jake continue to deepen as characters, through the glimpses we get of their respective pasts, especially. The alternate slow burn and fireworks between Abi and Nat continues, and leaves the reader eager to see where they go next.

First off, I would like to thank Booktasters and the author C. A.Asbrey for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This series has been an amazing read. Thank you again for giving me this experience.

Now, on to the review -
I really enjoyed this book.
More than the first one even~!

I love reading about how Abigail dissects a crime scene.
It is so cool to see how her mind works and how the smallest of things can lead to deductions I would never have thought of.

Jake and Nat's relationship are put to the test in this one.
Will they overcome whatever is coming between them?
Or will they forever lose what they had of being a family?
I guess you'll have to read to find out, eh? ;)

And of course, the ending left me wanting more.

I definitely recommend this book to all crime loving romantics out there~!
It was the perfect read to what has been a rainy day for me.

Authentic and realistic mystery thriller.

These two wanted crims, Nat, and his uncle Jake, are fast becoming my favourite outlaws. Throw in Abigail MacKay, a female Pinkerton Detective, on the case for thieves and murderers, in the late 1860’s, and you have a great western whodunnit. For a touch of spice, there’s the volatile romantic entanglement with Abi and Nat. As the story unfolds, you can see the brick wall, that Abi has surrounded herself with, starting to crumble as she fights her feelings for Nat. These three are a dynamic trio who work together to unravel a couple of deaths, using the forensic methods of the times.
The story itself is a fantastic read, never letting up with tension, drama, and realism. The author has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of criminal procedures for these times. Her intricate details are testament to her research. The reader will find themselves almost transported back over 150 years, seemingly an eye witness to all the events that transpire.
This is the second book in this amazing series, and the best so far, in my opinion. I already have book 3, Innocent Bystander, and cannot wait to see what ones next for this terrific trio.
Five special ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars for this perfectly written historical, western mystery!

This is the second book in The Innocents series. This book brings back Nat Quinn, Jake Conroy and Abigail MacKay as the unlikely friends and crime solvers. They are reunited at a bank - Abigail is investigating as a Pinkerton agent and Jake and Nat are robbing the bank. A massive storm and avalanche trap them in town. A dead body turns up in the local church. It’s time for Abi, Nat and Jake to help local law enforcement find the killer.

Each of our main characters is broken. In the past they have suffered a tragedy. We see more of the events that have shaped their lives and begin to understand their motivation for the lives they lead. There is an undeniable attraction between Abi and Nat which complicates the investigation. Can people on opposite sides of the law really plan a life together?

C.A. Asbrey does more than just write...she crafts a book. Her characters are multifaceted and the storyline is far from predictable. The lyrical quality of the book is charming and will keep you reading until the end. Enjoy the twists and turns; we need to see what happens to The Innocents and Abi next!

Thanks to BookTasters and the author for a free e-copy of this book that was given to me and I'm providing my review.

Abi, Nat and Jake get together again and this time they're hunting a killer while everybody's stranded by the snow. I really liked the book and since I already knew the main characters, it was so easy to get into the book.

Favorite character: If I liked Abi and Nat equally on the previous book but I think Abi outshines Nat in this one and now I like him and Jake equally.
Least favorite character: Constance, for all her insecurities.
Favorite part: although I liked a lot the development of the investigation with the new forensic techniques, I think what I liked most was Jake's background story; it was nice to get to know him a little bit more.
Least favorite part: I would have liked to see Nat and Abi interact a little bit more.

This was my first of The Innocents, and although having not read the first book, had no trouble getting into it and coming to understand the characters' complicated history.

C.A. Asbrey does a wonderful job of crafting this mystery. Well, it's really two mysteries. When they solve the first one, I was wondering how the bad guys were going to return to fill up the rest of the book and suddenly found a bonus second mystery, which is the meat of this fun book. This second mystery is quite timely and very applicable to current events in this country and the world around us, which I found quite compelling.

Beautiful writing and marvelous imagery captivate, using a wonderful vocabulary that is still easy to read. A joy to read, and I look forward to following the exploits of The Innocents in subsequent books by this talented author.

if you thought the first book was interesting then you are in for the shock, the continuation book 2 is an absolute thrill. The chemistry between Abigail(pinkerton detective) and Nat Quinn( Outlaw of large repute) is growing in leaps and bounds. An absolutely amazing read and pretty much difficult to put down . The Ability Abigail has to decipher a situation and pick up clues can only be matched by the likes of a Sherlock Holmes. Her mastery of disguises and accents is also brought to the fore in this book.

If you have ever read the first book you would want to read this too. Truly amazing work.

I love this series so much! Nat, Jake and Abigail are great characters who remain with you long after reading the books, and you care what happens to them. There's some wonderful dialogue and interactions, which brings them to life.

The author has thoroughly researched her facts and deftly weaves them into the story, creating an interesting narrative that carries you along as the three protagonists try to solve the crime. Add in a will they, won't they love story and references to a mystery woman from Jake's past, and it's hard to put the book down!

Part crime novel, part western, part romance, this is a fantastic series that I highly recommend!

Following on from the previous escapades of Abigail as she tracks down Jake & Nat, this is a superb read. The author really draws you in, painting a wonderful picture of the era & leaving the reader praying for the first female Pinkerton detective to catch her man. It was great to see how the characters had evolved since Book One & they certainly seemed smarter, more devious & slightly untouchable, which is a must as they dance back & forth outwitting each other. Highly recommended.

Asbrey mysteries are terrific. Compelling main characters, challenging mysteries, and intriguing problem solving. Asbrey's knowledge of determining manners of death is masterful. Her descriptive passages are vivid bringing scenes to life. I will soon be finished with her 3rd book, Innocent Bystander, and I am looking forward to the 4th book. I hope she has another in the works, and that it will be coming out soon.

This one probably just best the first book. In my opion. It goes beyond just mystery and solving cases. And oh, the romance. I love how they always try to out-smart each other and how they will always be drawn to each other. This is really good and worth reading. I hope the next book will get the readers hook as much as these first two. Another great job done. Salute~

Loved this story. I love the science in it and that the main character is a female Pinkerton. She is set against two men, outlaws, that are just as smart and just as driven as she is. Ms. Asbury has done a masterful job of pitting the protagonist against the bad guys. The tension reminded me of the TV show Moonlighting. Delicious!

What can I say, I love a great mystery series and Author C.A. Asbrey does not disappoint in Book 2, Innocent as Sin. Pinkerton agent Abigail Mackay is once again on the trail to catch the bad guys, and this time her path lands her right in the middle of The Innocents gang members Jake Conroy and Nat Quinn latest good doer robbery, much to their surprise. An evil bounty hunter needs to be stopped, and Nat and Jake are determined to lend Abi a hand, no matter how much she doesn't want it!

The mayhem and distrust continues with many twists and turns as Abi, Nat and Jake become an unlikely team to track down a murderer. Nat and Abi acknowledge their love, but can they ever bring it to fruition when their lives (and strong personalities) are on two very different, opposing paths? C.A. Asbrey brings the old west back to life with this suspense filled tale. The characters, settings and fledgling forensic science methods capture this reader's mind, and I can't wait to be with these characters once again. A great read, highly recommended!

Nat and Jake find themselves in the same town as the disguise wearing detective Abigail. It breaks Nat's heart when he finds she is teamed up with a deadly bounty hunter. But is she? Things get sticky when a frozen body is dumped by them while they slept.
Loved how these characters compliment each other and the author's way of keeping them jumping from one wrong conclusion to another about their personal life while allowing them to be so precise in their investigations. Criminals seem to make pretty good detectives!

About the Author:

I was given this wonderful book for free in exchange for an honest review for booktasters. Thank you very much for the opportunity!

Innocent as Sin is a work of historical fiction which focuses on a band of people greatly resembling highwaymen, called The Innocents, including uncle and nephew Jake and Nat Conroy, who operate under a set of rules are all their own. Set in 1869, the overall atmosphere and aesthetics of this novel are deeply appealing and cinematic, helped along by succinct descriptions of the characters’ surroundings, thus bringing scenes to life without imprisoning the reader in minutiae. The action of the plot rests itself on witty dialogue, swollen and pregnant with personality. I was particularly enraptured by the silver-tongued Nat.

The characters explored therein are what arrested me the most. Nat Conroy, the charming and charismatic outlaw with a heart of solid gold. Jake Conroy, the protective uncle burdened by a dark past sticky with blood, who’s sufferings from PTSD stir empathy in the audience. And finally, the last but by no means least in the main trio; Abigail Mackay, the enchanting double agent with shrouded motives and an air of permanent secrecy, which drives Nat constantly insane.

Given that the review I was asked to create was required to be honest, I have one issue with the piece. I found a slight (slight) penchant for cliché – “He towered over her, his dark eyes penetrating her soul,” (p28), “Nat felt his distaste for the man slither down his spine,” (p72) – which makes itself known on occasion, which was unfortunate. This was genuinely outshined by the author’s choice of deliciously uncommon phrases which treat the reader often: “His voice chimed with laughter,” (p11), “the rasp of butter on hot toast,” (p151). All works come with faults, and this was the only I was able to isolate.

I fully recommend this book to lovers of hard-boiled crime fiction, historical romance, and period mysteries, given that this publication encapsulates all three genres with a masterful flair. I will most certainly be passing on word of it to friends of mine with similar tastes.
