Montana Fire #7

Some Like It Hot

Rate this book
Riley McCord is trouble, from his blue eyes to his renegade smile—a cover for the grief of losing his father three years ago in Afghanistan, a loss that is still top secret. Riley masks it all by living large—working hard and playing hard, and that includes romancing Larke Kingston, local wilderness medic. When he’s sidelined while working the forest fire, he’s determined to rejoin his team, but to do so, he'll have to accompany Larke into the wilderness when she is dispatched to a medical emergency. What he doesn’t realize is that trouble is waiting for him in the woods…

Medic Larke Kingston lost the man she loved during her service in Afghanistan and she’s not interested in a troublemaker, so Riley’s no threat to her heart. Just a short-term distraction. Until, that is, a wilderness medical mission puts her face-to-face with an escaped prisoner. Suddenly she needs Riley more than she wants to admit.

Riley is shocked when the escapee claims to have answers about his father’s death. However, before he can uncover them, the fire turns and is bearing down on Larke’s ranch, and his team. Now, only Riley and Larke stand between the flames and destruction of everything they both love. But will the price of saving the ranch—and the team—be greater than they both can bear?

I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.

I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.

Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.

Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.

Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at susan@susanmaywarren.com. More action, adventure, danger, and suspense make this an exciting finale to the trilogy! I love how the author skillfully weaves in a message of faith with the characters who are so strong and brave, yet struggling and vulnerable deep inside. Riley is definitely a heartbreaker, but it's Larke who makes him want to be the man he knows he can be, and the last thing he wants to do is see her hurt. I appreciated that even though he's a bit of a player, he was respectful and genuine with Larke, putting her needs first. The difficult experiences they share while fighting fires and treating the injured naturally draw them closer together, and they are able to support each other in their grief and help overcome insecurities. I love how the men in these stories view the women as completely capable and skilled in their professions and the level of respect that is there. Larke is conflicted over knowing that she doesn't need to be protected, that she shouldn't want it, yet relishing the feeling of safety when the men in her life stand up for her and over her when necessary. Riley helps her come to terms with her struggle and accept a healthy perspective that it's what people do for those they love. All the loose ends from the previous books are tied up nicely and there is a satisfying conclusion for each of the three couples.

'Never go to war without God, Riley. Only when you belong completely to him, can he truly use you.'

Susan May Warren finishes off her Summer of the Burning Sky series with this one and boy, does she end it well! I loved every minute of this. Riley and Larke are a wonderful pair for this book. Both has some serious issues that seem to cripple them emotionally, but Warren helps them back to God in the story as they learn that only God can smooth out the rough places and help us along. One thing I absolutely loved about Riley was his natural born desire to protect Larke, the woman he loved. I think deep down every woman wants to feel loved and protected by her guy. I know I do. Warren shows this perfectly! And the the greatest thing about a Susan May Warren novel: she is not afraid to have a powerful gospel message included in each book. I love this about her!

We get a bit of the backstory from the first two in the series and it's necessary to catch up to the point in which this story begins. And she gives us a wonderfully satisfying conclusion to all three couples. I adored these two characters. I think they are my favorite of the series. But I'm never disappointed in a Warren novel. Never. Highly recommended.

*My thanks to the author for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Another great action packed adventure with characters trying to find their way out of danger as well as out of the emotional hurts with the help of God.

And we go introduced to Orion who is the main character in The Way of the Brave, first book in the new series by Susan May Warren.

20% was a bit of repeat but the rest of the 80% was all thrilling new adventures for the smoke jumping team.

This series should be read in order and probably close together due to cliffhangers, so make sure you have access to all three books!

SOME LIKE IT HOT is the third book of this series and fans will want to read them in order as they sort of don't stand alone. In fact, some might want to read the Montana Fire series first because that is where the firefighters came from to fight the Alaskan fires.

I was looking forward to reading SOME LIKE IT HOT and as soon as it appeared on my kindle I dug in, and read it in a few hours (estimated reading time is a bit over three hours.) Larke and Riley are more gritty than I'm used to, both looking for a one-night-stand as the story opens, which rather shocked me, but Larke has a godly father and the values she was raised with kicked in. I loved that she -- they -- remembered her father's words and faith messages and I hoped they'd find God for themselves.

I also loved the poem by Kipling--the motto of the Navy Seals which Riley memorized and quoted parts of often. I will have to look that poem up to read it sometime.

This is the final novella of the series, but there are two secondary characters I'd like to see more of -- Orion and Thorne -- both have a huge dilemma of their own that wasn't resolved and this book ended with kind of a cliffhanger about Thorne...

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

Series review on Faithfully Bookish

With overlapping timelines, non-stop action, and sweetly steamy romance, this series is the perfect summer binge-read! New readers can jump right in with this series while fans of Susan May Warren’s Montana Fire and Montana Rescue series will reconnect with familiar characters.

Warren excels in crafting genuine, authentic characters, vivid story worlds, and intricate adventurous plots with foundational faith themes. While these three stories are tightly connected, each installment also has its own conflict or crisis and resolution, leaving readers eager to dive into the next book without the use of a cliffhanger ending.

If you’re fascinated by the ever-present Alaskan summer sun (like I am) then you’ll especially enjoy this smokejumping crew’s heart-pounding adventure! This is a series I plan to reread time and again and I highly recommend it!

It was fun to finish out this trilogy. These books need to be read in order and pretty close together. Each book covers the same events, but from different perspectives. And each story does go into detail or cover certain things that the others don't. They were all enjoyable and high intensity reads.

Yowser! What a way to finish the series! I’ve decided I definitely like it hot. ;-)

During the previous book in this series, I developed a crush on Rio. Call me fickle, but I was about half a page into this book and it was ‘Hel-looooo, Riley!’ I am such a sucker for a damaged hero, especially a flirty one, and Riley fits that description to a T. And although she tries really hard not to be, it seems Larke is a sucker for one too. Although, in the end, sucker isn’t really the right word for it because, in spite of the short time-frame for the story, we see ample proof of the way these two are compatible in a deeper way than mere physical attraction.

I highly recommend starting at the beginning of this series, as the books overlap as well as telling a progressive story. While there is a bit of repetition at the beginning, there's also a lot that you miss if you pick this up without reading the first two in the series. This story starts in the same place as the other two, but there’s less crossover since Riley and Larke remain behind after the convicts escape. For them, the struggle is much more personal. Riley has grown up in the shadow of his superhero soldier father, Master Chief McCord, believing he’s simply reckless, not one of the good guys like his father. He loves anything that’s hot and dangerous. Runs towards it. And Larke’s already lost one man she loved because he never hesitated to put himself in harm’s way. One needs to learn that perhaps God made him the way he is for a reason, and the other—well, maybe she needs someone who's not afraid to follow her into the fire.

The pace never lets up as they struggle to contain the fire eating up the Alaskan wilderness and deal with their roiling emotions at the same time. The flirting. The romance. And that ending! Yowser!! Again!! I think I forgot to breathe there for a while… And best of all, there are hints of more stories to come. Oh, let it be so!

I received a copy of this book from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

The third and final book in Susan May Warren’s Summer of The Burning Sky series is definitely my favorite. Some Like It Hot has everything the other 2 books in the series had — adventure, danger, suspense, and sizzling romance — but the story resonated with me in a different way. The two main characters definitely are strong and capable, but displayed a vulnerability that was appealing to this reader. You’ll love their story!

The plot of Some Like It Hot runs parallel to the first two books in the series, but focuses on the relationship between smokejumper Riley McCord and former Army medic Larke Kingston. Larke flies support planes for the firefighting effort, and her family’s ranch serves as headquarters for the men and women smokejumpers. The attraction between Riley and Larke starts out fast and hot, but they both soon realize that a one night stand is not what either really want. As the fire heats up, so does the suspense. The two face injury, prisoners on the run, and danger from more than one front. As in the first two books, the characters in Some Like It Hot have been impacted by their pasts — Riley’s perceptions from childhood and Larke’s combat experiences. I liked how Warren has them work through their feelings for each other and the broken parts of their lives. Psalm 23 has been an integral part of the series, and in this final book, the green pastures God provides is emphasized.

Some Like It Hot is the series’ final book, and Warren brings all the story lines together at the end, pointing to futures for all three couples highlighted. The novella-length books are quick reads and because all three are now available, you can binge read them in a weekend! Certainly they provide great romantic suspense for their readers.

Recommended.

Audience: adults.

Great must-read series

No one does it like Susie May Warren. Honestly, short books are not my favorite. It's tough to build true connections, to flesh out interesting stories. But this series. Three parts, each necessary and in order. So clever, so well plotted....each begins from the same place, but progresses in a different direction as it's seen through the eyes of a different couple. Each book peels back new facts about certain characters. Same situation, different dangers, new perspectives. Smart. Suspenseful. Romantic. Vintage Susie May Warren.

I've read many "beach reads" this summer....all which make me realize just how well Susie May writes. From the overarching story, to the individual sentences....beautifully arranged and articulated.... to the grain of thought that precedes it all. She's just brilliant. And funny. And deeply spiritual. I'm grateful for her and other authors like her, that both entertain and challenge me. That give me something of value to contemplate when I'm finished. That though reading is an escape for me, it can be worthwhile when all is said and done. This third installment of the series is by far the best. Just SO good. Yes, I recommend it....along with everything by this author.

“We’re all stuck, a little bit, in the valley between who we want to be and who we are.”

What an exciting conclusion to The Summer of the Burning Sky series! This third and final book is totally not what I expected. The bulk of the second book in the series, The Heat Is On, was a recap of the events from the first book but seen from the eyes of different characters. It was still a great read and I expected the third book to be similar. Susan May Warren surprised me once again! Some Like It Hot has a new plot line and subplot lines that merge seamlessly into the original storyline plotted out in the first book. There are some recaps of several events told through Riley and Larke’s perspectives but the majority of this book has fresh events, tons of action and adrenaline-filled scenes, gripping and tender moments, sigh-worthy romance, notable and applicable spiritual epiphanies, incredibly broken yet malleable and lovable characters all wrapped up with fast-paced and easy to follow writing.

Riley is a fun-loving, charming smokejumper who has much more depth to his personality than he lets on. He feels deeply, loves fiercely, and shows up consistently when he’s needed. Larke is an ex-combat medic now flying planes with her dad’s business. She’s seen her share of war, heroics, and earth-shattering pain and does not want any of that repeated..... yet can’t help herself from falling for Riley. With the backdrop of a raging wildfire in Alaskan wilderness, a hunt for fugitives escaped from a minimum security prison, and a race to find a smuggling and trafficking mob boss, Riley and Larke’s romance is a sweet and heart-jarring light in the midst of evil and fear trying to overtake all the characters.
Some Like It Hot is another Susan May Warren winner!

This is my favorite of the series. 🙂 Some Like It Hot had a few twists out of nowhere, which made it all the more interesting to see how Riley and Larke would handle and respond to their circumstances as all the excitement unfolded. It wasn’t all action, though, as this story took possibly the deepest emotional turns and had both Riley and Larke coming to terms with what it means to be a hero, the risk it takes to love, and the way God abandons everything to bring us to Him. And Riley! Talk about a fun hero — he’s such a flirt on the outside but I loved seeing the way Larke brings out his protective and heroic side, especially when her own struggles and attraction complicate everything. The series is wonderfully and nicely wrapped up with this final novella, but I DO hope Susan has more in store for this team in the future!

Thank you to the author for the advanced copy of Some Like It Hot for review. This is my honest review.

Third in the series and my favorite. This series tells the story of one fire through three smokejumper's eyes. This one is the most emotionally wrought. It is the story of Riley and Larke. Riley is a smokejumper and Larke is a bushpilot who's father owns the place where the smokejumpers are staying. Both are very broken people who do what they do to keep their demons at bay. They originally are just attracted to each other in the physical sense but as they attempt to act on that, it becomes something different. Something neither expected or thought they deserved. As the fire and their relationship progress, they realize that maybe they aren't as undeserving of happiness as they thought. This story is so edge of your seat good. You WILL finish it in one sitting. The dramatic conclusion is oh so good!

Stunning conclusion of Susan May Warren’s summer series, Summer of the Burning Sky, Some Like It Hot. Riley McCord and Larke Kingston is a fast paced and breath taking conclusion to the hottest fiction of the summer.

Neither Riley nor Larke are interested in exploring the sparks that fly between them every time they are in proximity of each other. Both are grieving the loss of men dear to them; Riley, his father who was mysteriously killed in Afghanistan, and Larke, her love who was killed in action in Afghanistan just within the last year.

The forest fire the team has been fighting has taken a turn toward the ranch and Larke’s homestead. As Riley rejoins his firefighting team, and Larke strives to reach a patient who just may be in labor, each determines to put out the sparks that seem threaten them both, figuratively and literally.

What an intense conclusion to Susan May Warren's latest summer series. Reading the first two books is not required, but will help you better understand the characters and dangerous situation.

Join bad boy wannabe, Riley as he discovers what a hero is as well as more of his true self. After meeting his female interest of the moment, Larke, he realizes just how much trouble he's in. Battling fires and escaped prisoners might be safer.

I received a copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.

Some Like It Hot is the 3rd book in the Where There’s Smoke Series and a great conclusion! This like the 2nd book parallels a fire event, but follows Riley and Larke. Susan May Warren has the gift for creating suspense so realistic that at times I have to stop reading and step away just to breathe. This book is no exception. Her writing makes you feel like you are there going through the fire with the characters.
The faith struggles along with the danger allows you to see the characters connect on a soul level. Susan always teaches truth. And in this book, words from the 23rd Psalm repeat in their minds helping them find God in their dangerous situations.
Recently watching the wildfires in the west while reading this book reminded me of how real this can be for many. And realizing the true danger these fire fighter heroes face daily.
It is a great read that I highly recommend.
But one more thing, what about Thorne and Orion and Larke’s brothers?
Sure hoping we will hear their stories!
I was given an ARC ebook but the opinion is my own.

Oh wow!!! I could not wait to start the conclusion of the series, but then again, I didn't want to start as this is the end!! You know just like you leave the best chocolate for last but also wants it to last forever!! That is how I felt about SOME LIKE IT HOT!!
And wow!!! What an awesome conclusion!! When you begin to read, you won't be able to stop until the last page! It touches your heart! Lark and Riley's real struggles with their fears and how to overcome them is just awesome!! And then the amazing lesson learned: "We don't have to have all the answers, Rio. But God does, and that's enough, right?"
I absolute loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves to read suspense, filled with romance and of course faith!!
Awesome job Susan May Warren can't wait for the next series!!

Susie suggested reading this novella again before reading (2020)"The Way of the Brave" her latest book and I did to refresh my memory of characters. Which was find. I've now read "The Way of the Brave" and I like how some previous characters haven't been left hanging in our minds. for example Thorne and Royal. Larke and Riley do continue on with their relationship.

Riley and Larke's story. Interesting backgrounds and finale for Tucker, Skye and Riley and smoke jumpers. Fires are dangerous and leave a toll. Thank full for those who answer the call to fight the dragon. (especially recently 2020 in Australia where volunteers died to save lives/property)

This is the third novella in the 'Summer of Burning Sky' trilogy and a fitting conclusion. As with #2, we go right back to the beginning when the firefighters are in the Alaskan bar, but this time we take the perspectives of Larke and Riley, and we see what they were up to while the other action in Books 1 and 2 was happening. This really is a series you have to read in order. I had already finished reading the three books featuring Larke's brothers, and hadn't realised she'd been in an earlier book, so it was good to finally find out her backstory.

She was a medic in Afghanistan and had come home to Sky King Ranch in Alaska with her own demons. Firefighter Riley was still grieving the loss of his father in Afghanistan three years previously. What starts out as a potential one-night stand ends very differently when they discover they both have deeper things in common and that maybe this relationship could be something more.

As we know from the previous books, there is a fire raging out of control and prisoners on the loose. When Riley tags along with Larke to visit one of her patients, things go pear-shaped and they find themselves in a death-defying situation. Will they survive, learn to fight their demons and have kissies along the way? Well, you know the answer, but it was fun getting there anyway.

Susan May Warren is on the racier side of 'clean' romance, but I like the way she shows real situations and the choices that people have to make. The characters also grapple with faith issues along the way that affect who they are as individuals.

This trilogy was a fun, easy read in some ways, but also had depth in the issues the characters had to face. A number of people also pop up who appear in other books I've read, so you know we'll be seeing some of these characters again. Although I've read the books within each series in order, I don't seem to have mastered the overall series order. LOL

Recommended for anyone who likes romantic suspense, intertwined with issues of faith.

Book 3 in the Summer of the Burning Sky series, “Some Like It Hot,” follows the story of Riley McCord and Larke Kingston. You’ll want to read this series in order to get the full effect and not create spoilers for yourself. Like a rich dessert, this final book both satisfies and lingers.

When they walk on the page, the reader has the clear sense that both Riley and Larke are broken and alone. A former army medic who can never repay the debt paid for her life. And Riley, a smokejumper whose father died in Afghanistan, has always had trouble following the rules. He knows he’ll never be the hero his father was.

I loved the unique time play in this series—all three books in the series are taking place simultaneously, so the reader experiences the same events from many different perspectives. There are some great “aha!” moments and I also appreciate that these novellas respect the time it takes to develop a relationship.

There’s one character in particular whom I hope finds his way into another of Warren’s novels. I won’t give it away, but as U.S. Marshal Stevie Mills heads after a wanted man at the end of the book, my curiosity has been roused about him and what the truth surrounding him is.

I enjoyed this whole series. In these novellas, Warren still delves deep into the hurts of her characters, the redemption of Christ, and the hope of the future.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

WOW! THIS IS ONE HOT BOOK!
When you pick up a book and can’t stop until it’s finished, you know it’s a great book.
Well, this is one of those books. Yet, not just this book, but the WHOLE series!
I like what the synopsis says at the end:
In book 3, the epic Summer of the Burning Sky series comes to a blazing, shocking finale.
Susan May Warren has done it again. She’s written a story which was so captivating from the very beginning to the last word. WOW!
This book continues the storyline of the fires in Alaska. With the smokejumpers and firefighters who worked to save the beautiful landscape, to the suspenseful actions of fighting the dangers not only from the fire but from the escaped prisoners.
The whole crew has to dig deep inside to find the strength they need, and which they can draw upon, that only comes from God.
I enjoyed how the author ended this book because it was a continuation of the other two books and nothing was left undone.
This whole series is full of sparks, action, intrigue, drama, suspense, and some sweet romance!
I highly recommend you pick up this book and whole series. You’ll never watch the news about forest fires and look at beautiful mountains the same!

Riley McCord and Larke Kingston are fighting fires and themselves in this the third installment of the series.

Riley McCord doesn't see himself as a hero but he is one. Larke Kingston can see that but he runs head first into danger and Larke lost someone she loved to the same character trait.

Riley is injured while fighting the Alaskan wild fire and Larke babysits him because she knows he will go running back to the fire.

Larke was a field medic in the army and duty calls while she is driving Riley back to her family's ranch. They run head first into trouble and neither one is a match for the evil that is after them.

Larke has demons and so does Riley, can they face their fears and self destructive tendencies and find God when they need him? If you are a fan of Ms. Warren then you already know the answer.

I don't know if there are more books after this one in the series. I sort felt like everything wasn't tied up the way I like it to be. I wanted to know more about a character or two. All in all though it was a fast, action packed story that taught me a bit about smoke jumping.

This conclusion...man, I am at a loss for words!

It was incredible.

Riley and Larke were the perfect couple to bring this series to an end. I felt like they were a culmination of all the characters, couples in this Montana Fire series.

I absolutely loved Riley's determination to be there for everyone, to save people, to run into the fire. He owned this part of him too which was so cool and the best part was that he saw himself as a hero by the end of the novella.

I loved getting to read about Larke too! Her character journey, as she tried to claw her way out of the valley, was amazing. I loved seeing her discover her own strength and also realize that it's not weakness to lean on others for help.

This whole Montana Fire series with the Jude County Hotshots and Smokejumpers has been incredible and I am so sorry to have reached the end. But the best part about Susan's novels is that I am confident I may see some of these couples again! Fingers crossed!

Some Like It Hot is the third book in the Summer Of The Burning Sky series by Susan May Warren. Again, the same story is told from Riley McCord's perspective, finishing up the tale. Riley is injured fighting the fire and ends up at Sky King Ranch with Larke Kingston. When Larke, a medic, is called out on an emergency, Riley accompanies her. Not only do they encounter a criminal hunting one of the escaped prisoners, but also another one that was shot and needs care.

This contemporary romance continues the fast-paced adventure. I bought the trilogy for Riley and Larke's story specifically, and I loved it. I wanted to learn their origin after reading about them in previous books. Adding Logan's backstory was a bonus, and beginning a connection with Riley.

I purchased a Kindle copy of this book.

While this is a series, you can read this without reading the other novellas. As always, suspenseful, action, romance all made for a great fun read. Riley and Larke's story made for a fun conclusion to this series. Riley and Larke are both hurting from events in their pasts. They are both genuine honest hearts, with a passion for what they do in life, and great chemistry.
SMW is a master story teller. You never want to put the book down. She knows how to pull things together well. That being said, I did find it slightly off that Riley was functioning after what happened in the hospital and then at the cabin. But I was willing to suspend my disbelief for the sake of the story. Always a favorite read of mine.
