Gentleman's progress: The Itinerarium of Dr. Alexander Hamilton, 1744

Rate this book
Dr. Hamilton (no relation to the famous one) set out on horseback with his slave Dromo to travel from Maryland to Maine in 1744. Along the way, he sailed up the Hudson River to Albany. His diary is fascinating to anyone interested in colonial history or anyone who has lived on the Eastern seaboard.

Really interesting first person account of the American colonies from Annapolis to Kittery, Maine through several months of travel with the writer. The author, a Scottish gentleman doctor, had some witty observations but I found him completely unlikable, even when accounting for the differences in what was acceptable commentary and social views at the time. He was an insufferable and judgmental snob. Incidentally he writes of an encounter with one of my ancestors, whom he found "surly." Ha!
