We found this in a local little free library and snatched it up! I grew up on the original 26-minute 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘴, but when my family discovered the 2018 version, my daughters were immediately sold. We watched it pretty much all year long for the first couple of years and it has remained a Christmas tradition to this day. This book is based on the 2018 movie and really does a great job of keeping all the details in it. As I read it to them, I could hear Benedict Cumberbatch's voice in my head because the dialogue was so spot on with the movie script. A very cute addition to your bookshelf!
For some reason my daughter has developed a mild obsession with the Grinch, so we checked this book out from the library. She was not quite four when we read it together, a little bit each night, and I was skeptical that - without pictures - it would hold her attention. To my surprise, it did, and I read the whole thing aloud to her. I realized about a third of the way through that I myself hadn't ever read any of the versions of the Grinch, including the original, so it was a fun read for me as well. Great introduction to chapter books for my little one.
As is the case with all novelizations, whether or not you like this will depend on how much you like the movie. Unfortunately, I read this before I actually saw the movie myself (whoops). But it’s competently written, a quick read for everyone above the intended age group, and it shouldn’t be too difficult for the targeted demographic. If you liked the movie I think this should hold you over until it comes to home release.
I have always loved the Christmas tale of the Grinch. This version was so cute. It definitely put me in the Christmas spirit. This story reminded me of all the Christmas eves I have had and celebrating Christmas with my loved ones.
I legit LOVE the movie of this book. I love the Grinch, so this movie made me smile when I first saw it. I am SO happy because I have this book at my house, and I love the Grinch movies. All 3 of them.
I like reading the novelizations of movies to get a few more details and tidbits. Lets face it, the book version is always better. Even if its the book version of the movie.
And after reading this book (before watching the movie in theaters) I can affirm that this is not an awesome update to the story (even if update is a really bad word to use beacuse the original story doesn't need updates, maybe it can stand modernizations?). This is too juvenile and simplistic. Who-ville is graphically nice (contrary to what I stated earlier), but Cindy-Lou isn't (and then again to this point - 18 November - I've only read about her). Overall it lacks the charm of Dr Seuss' story and even of the Ron Howard's elaboration, although the theme is the same. Three stars for fondness' sake, but the must is to read the original book, love it and then to watch the 2000 movie. This is like a vaguely cute addition...

Uhm, I'm one of the biggest fan of the Grinch's story, from the original simple tale book to the 2000 movie, which elaborated the story. I don't think I'm going to love this modernized version, however, because I don't find the graphic to be enchanting and Whoville doesn't seem the real thing. But I'll read this novelization because I know myself and I love Grinch-related, Christmas-related items.
The junior novelization of "The Grinch" is the retelling of a Christmas classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss.
Unfortunately, this novelization was not an amazing update to the original story. It lacked massive effervesence. Another aspect of this book was that it was telling instead of showing. It made it difficult to truly see what happening within this realm. The narrative lacked the usual charm and aesthetic of the original book and the 2000 movie adaptation. Even with these annoyances, the book was a quick and easy read.
Since I was a child, there were few stories I liked more than the Grinch. This spin on my green-furry-frowner and his loyal pup Max was purely delightful. I had to fight off my nine-year-old from taking it from me before I could read it - He, he... Maybe I'm a little bit grinchy as well :))
