Welcome to Boston, where all your nightmares come to life.... To the tune of a Christmas jingle.
Quinn MacKenna learns that the cure for a blinding hangover is simple....
Stay in bed, and whatever you do, don’t answer your freaking door.
Otherwise, you might find yourself roped into a murder investigation with a psychopath attempting to rewrite the Twelve Days of Christmas as a holiday homicide special, asked to rescue a former international spy, forced to dodge bullets with a Valkyrie, or to take on a power-hungry Fae intent on freezing everything he touches.
Hypothetically speaking.
In hindsight, snorting crushed aspirin in a dingy alley would have been the wiser choice....
Especially when Quinn learns the only way to find the answers she seeks is by...sampling some magically-infused, hallucinogenic flowers. And that someone is waiting for her on the other side of her out-of-body experience.
And they've been waiting a very long time....
Welcome the newest antihero in the worldwide best-selling Temple Verse by Shayne Silvers. Join Cameron O’Connell and Shayne at the literary bar to sip a dirty cocktail of feisty Irish brogue - with an unhealthy splash of monsters - today!
If you like KF Breene, Shannon Mayer, CN Crawford, Ilona Andrews, or Patricia Briggs, you will love the third installment of the Phantom Queen Diaries.
Let's cut to the chase. You read stuff. I write stuff. So, If you want to nab a few of my free Amazon Best Selling Urban Fantasy books to test the waters, go here: http://www.shaynesilvers.com
Now, let's talk about this specimen of a man named Shayne...
Shayne Silvers writes the "Nate Temple Series" which features a foul-mouthed, flawed, young wizard with a chip on his shoulder attempting to protect St. Louis from the various nasties we all know and fear from our childhood bedtime stories.
Nate's been known to suckerpunch an Angel, cow-tip the Minotaur, and steal Death's horse in order to prove his point. His utter disregard for consequences and self-preservation will have you laughing and cringing on the edge of your seat.
But he has a lot to learn. Namely, how not to be so big of an A-Hole.
Shayne holds two high-ranking black belts, and enjoys conversing about anything Marvel, Magical, or Mythological. You might find him writing in a coffee shop near you, cackling madly into his computer screen while pounding shots of espresso.
So are we making the new adjective "Camerific" or "O'Conellicious"?
The third foray into Quinn Mackenna's more dubiously principled life and world-sphere draws us deeper into things on the more far-flung end of the Templeverse where apocalyptic events are not in fact a regular Tuesday occurrence, and shows us how flabbergastingly convoluted the life and times of Nate Temple can look from a fresh outside perspective, even one that starts this entry fighting off a hangover from a Vegas bender with both his ex and somewhat precipitously assumed current girlfriend.
While I'm sure Silvers and O'Connell are laughing maniacally over the groans of their readers now having to wait to hear about that particular story, I'm more of the mind at how efficiently they're managing to juggle the likely well needed prodding to the hero-ego of Nate Temple along with the unfolding revelations that Quinn Mackenna may not in fact be just another obscure but low sitting Fae offspring on the universal roster, but yet another conveniently misplaced child of destiny on the cusp of inheriting or being forced into a role, powers, and responsibilities that should not be in the hands of someone so reliant on hard liquor to get her mental gears in working order. My money is at the moment on something to do with the Morrigan, because where most authors look at subtle foreshadowing as a carefully used scalpel, Silvers looks at like a nail-gun hooked up to an industrial sized air compression tank and a dubiously constructed feed-belt magazine cobbled into the clip.
The ride is a bit more wild to say the least, and Silvers is of no lost sleep at letting O'Connell run amok in his sandbox, clashing headlong into the longer-standing plot threads between other characters and even seeding and weaving a few new ones of his own into the jumbled mess along the way and he's shown he isn't afraid to drop a few status quo changes the way most authors would pepper in a meal scene or a discussion while driving.
All in all, I can tell that there are no plans to let the series be something small and unremarkable in comparison to the other series in the Templeverse, and as ever I look forward to what comes along next.
Loved it!! I didn't like Callie Penrose, Feathers and Fire series but I'm a huge Nate Temple fan and this book have many references scattered in it that ties it beautifully in with the Templeverse. Master Temple himself made a short appearance and that made me so curious to find the cause of Nate's panic. Callie and Huntress also showed up. All the tie ins made this book a lot more fun. Also I love Quinn! Shayne and Cameron's collaboration has made this an awesome Urban Fantasy.

This is the 3rd book to the Phantom Queen series and it is a wonderful addition for sure. Quinn MacKenna is much more then the eyes behold. She has powers that she knows she has, but dare she use them and at what cost. The story includes shifters, demons, a Valkyrie, a elf queen, a redcap, humans with special abilities, ghosts and unscrupulous elves, werebears and humans.
Quinn finds herself trying to help a former Russian bear shifter and his children find their kidnapped wife/mother. All sorts of trials and tribulations befall Quinn and those trying to help. The story runs smoothly with off and on action. I love Eve! The humor throughout the story is hilarious! A few characters from Shayne Silvers other series show up, which I enjoy immensely! The authors ask if the readers want Quinn to come play with Nate, Callie and crew and I say let her loose!
Being born in New England I'm delighted when references are made to the Boston Red Sox baseball teams and clothing. So much more about Quinn and her abilities needs to come forward, but I am very concerned about her long term survival! Now onto book 4 of the series - Dark and Stormy!! Kathy Barber Doyle - 7/10/2018
I absolutely love this person and the world with which she surrounds herself. That world was a very small and isolated one aside from business associates. However, since dipping a toe into the world of " Nate Temple and Associates ", the number of both friends and enemies she has accrued is growing at a staggering rate! With regulars being murdered across the country by a supernatural being as well as her friends being kidnapped, Quinn has no choice but to step in and attempt to help law enforcement.... including a newly formed unit of the FBI formed to deal with supernatural beings, all unofficially, of course. As with all if Shane's books ( with a nod to Cameron for adding a large dash of spice to the mix! ), the action and snark is nonstop with never a dull moment. This series continues to be a great read and the small overlap into Templeverse may keep me content until Nate's next book comes out! I continue to be amazed how Shayne can build worlds and characters that are so real and engaging while being totally wild! No pun intended! Shayne Silvers, you are the best and Cameron O' Connell, you did a superb job! Congrats on a great and totally enjoyable read! Now, on to the next in the series!
This one was was much clearer, much more on target with all the characters. The plot flowed and I'm loving where it's going. Quinn is really building up a head full of angry, misplaced racism towards Freaks and Fae. She's really basically afraid of the apparent lack of loyalty and inability to count on anyone, but it should be interesting to see how she extricates herself from all she's come to know. I don't think they'll let her stew for long, though, knowing this bunch. I also really like the way she's being drawn into all things Temple. Somehow, somewhere she's going to find herself to be a part of Team Temple without even realizing it happened. And I really hope somehow she's able to bring Jimmy along with her cause he'll need their help. The three groups (Boston, Kansas City and St Louis) are definitely migrating towards each other to face a showdown with the big bad that is coming. This book was so much tighter that it only took me a day to read it. It really pulled together this time, and I have to say Cameron's wit is coming through loud and clear. I believe Shayne is definitely rubbing off on him! Very well done, Cameron and Shayne! Loving it and can't wait for #4!
The action and the sass are pretty much non-stop in this latest adventure in the Templeverse.
Ever have one of those days, like at work, where you start to work on some project, and then there’s an emergency, so you have to stop what you were doing to work on the emergency, and then a worse emergency comes up that you have to take care of before the first one is solved, and so on until you are nested five or six levels deep in emergencies? Well, that’s sort of the situation Quinn MacKenna faces in Old Fashioned.
Quinn gets called out ‘way too early in the morning to help the FBI solve a bunch of murders that appear to have been committed by Jack the Ripper. She’s barely started on that before she finds out that her friend, the bar owner Christoff, has disappeared. In the process of trying to sort out all this, she goes on a sort of vision quest where she meets a being who may or may not be her mother and finally visits the Faerie Chancery.
Our third adventure with Quinn takes us down a slightly different path. Quinn is finally getting a chance to get more insight into the Fae by working with none other than the Chancery as well as a few familiar faces from the Templeverse. We get to rejoin with our favorite sector of the FBI for some good "Old Fashioned" Freak crime solving.
If it wasn't obvious in the first 2 books, Quinn's hair is very appropriately red and she can definitely be a stereotypical red headed hot head. The actions of her friends and acquaintances seem to push Quinn further to her breaking point in this book. On top of stressful and intense investigation, Quinn finds out she is unknowingly being influenced by people close to her. All of the stress and frustration comes to its boiling point when we finally get Nate and Quinn into a room together for an actual interaction. While this book may not be an exciting trip to NYC, the action that is close to home still turns out a page turner.
I have loved the first two books in this series, but this one is the best so far. I think the author has really hit his stride with this one. Quinn is back from a trip and is immediately thrown into another mess. This one is led by an FBI group she hasn’t known about before, and she isn’t sure she can trust them. What follows is of course a mad-cap fun adventure full of action and snark. I loved the characters in this FBI group Sickos! I may be in the minority, but I’d love to see more from them. And, of course, the regular cast of characters from the other two series is always great to see. I worry sometimes that there is a little too much crossover, but I will trust the authors to know what is right. If you loved the other books, you will definitely love this one! Highly recommend this to lovers of urban fantasy! I was provided a complimentary copy of the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
The 12 Days of Christmas will never be the same...
In what Templeverse veterans have come to expect, Shayne Silvers and Cameron O’Connell have once again taken the seemingly incorruptible and twisted it into a dark and terrifying mystery that our favorite Irish brawler and black magic arms dealer, Quinn MacKenna must unravel in order to save friends old and new. When a friend and his family disappear leaving a disturbing scene behind, Quinn must journey to the very edge of the place she most wants access to: Fae. As usual for these authors, Quinn’s desparate search against the clock leads her to more than one answer, and most importantly, a giant leap closer to figuring out who, and what, she is. Will she figure out the clues in time to save everyone? Maybe...but maybe not. Hang in for a non-stop thrill ride and get your copy now!
I have to admit that I cut my review of book 2 a little short in order to start reading this one. It had just released, and my excitement got the better of me. That said, it was worth it. The stories flow together like time, one day inevitably following the next as the people become more familiar and their actions make more sense as you learn more about them.
The books are phenomenal, the characters believable and well written, and the stories tied together across three series flowing together like a layered drink, mingling at the edges but still separate and distinctly flavored in their own right. Reading this series alone might be a good read, but you miss a great deal of the subtext in some of the character interactions that happen, and that would be a true shame.
Quinn unexpectedly get pulled into an investigation of a supernatural serial killer while simultaneously looking for a missing friend. You do NOT steal the woman's bartender and get away with it. Two separate issues at once...no problem. But when the consequences of these unaffiliated endeavors brings her not only the long dreaded meeting with the Chancery, but also into the crosshairs of some mysterious and violent shifter cadre, her world is turned upside down. All the while, the mystery of her past and powers slowly comes into focus. If only she could survive long enough to unravel it. A wonderfully crazy read further ensconcing Quinn into the annals of the Templeverse.
Cameron bringing in a lot of the Templverse characters to help Quinn out in this book.
Quinn has her priority straight. She is asked Agent Jefferies to help solve multiple murders where the killer has been taunting the police from state to state. Well she is kinda a suspect, but her favorite bartender has been kidnapped. So Quinn calls in back to find the man that serves the best Four Horseman drink in town! Lol Oh and to keep her alive and out jail long enough to stop a killer. Callie, Claire, Beckett, and fist full of other help Cameron make this pretty explosive book.
Quinn is back again, and this time, she has so much going on she doesn't know where to turn first. The freak-aware division of the FBI has conscripted her to help investigate a possible serial killer who seems to be moving in on Boston. Also, a close friend and his family have gone missing under strange, and potentially violent circumstances. All this leads Quinn to a place she has wanted, but been warned against, a meeting with the Faerie Chancery. Is Quinn quick witted and smart-mouthed enough to see this one through?
I admit I have been keeping these books and the Whisper series at bay because I am team Temple and didn't want to paint the series. I broke down and read them and I really like them. I can see how the characters are meeting and coming together. I personally hope that Quinn becomes one of Nate's horsemen O don't know which one but I do think Callie should be Justice! Shayne is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Cameron putting his spin on it meshed together really well with Shayne's style and I am going to be reading more of his books.
The freaks come out at night....and day apparently
Finally getting a break, Quinn heads to Vegas to let off steam and ends up with a vicious hangover that's about to get worse. When the FBI knocks on her door to get her help she should have known better than to answer... Her good friend and Bartender, Christoph, is missing, someone is killing using the 12 Days of Christmas as a guide, and her new drinking buddy is a Valkerie. On top of that, the Chancery, the Fae policing force, wants to see her. Boston isn't just Been Town anymore!
The one thing I liked the most about this book is that some of the characters from the other series are in this book. I like that Quinn still has her own stories, but having some other characters from other books in it make it more fun. Like when she goes to Alaska to see the bears and ends up going on a psychedelic trip with Starlight and she finally finds out why her former lover is not speaking to her. These books are becoming more interesting the more of them I read. I will be reading the next one in the series.
Quinn just gets more and more intriguing! Who/What is she? She is once again pulled into a no-holds-barred slugfest against beings from myth, legend, and nightmares.. The 'Easter Eggs', and pop-culture references abound and are completely delightful! The inclusion of characters from Temple and Penrose Universes is complete genuis! Read the series! But only if you aren't afraid of 'falling down the rabbit holes'...
Beware of the 12 days of Christmas. Book 3 does not let you down! Quinn continues to her journey to find out who or what she is! Another great collaboration between Masters Silver and O'Connell! The crossovers in the book are great for those of us who know the characters well and yet could be a stand alone series. I highly recommend you read them all! The weaving in and out with this story will drive you mad. So mad you can't put them down! A must read!
The action and intrigue never stops with Quinn MacKenna. Quinn still seeks information about her origins and a means into Fae. She also has some new friends and acquaintances that prove the old adage, a friend in need is a friend indeed. Unfortunately, she doesn't manage to keep track of all of them, and to find out what happens next, we'll have to wait for the next book.
What an excellent ride and all tied into the Nate Temple verse. An Quinn is a great addition to the main characters in this universe. Great job tying it into al of the other stories. The story itself is an awesome ride. Quinn is not Callie, but like her is bad a@@. Her friend is in trouble and she comes to the rescue. We also learn a little more about our female hero's past. Great read.
I don't so much mind that things are left unfinished as this means at least one possibly more books are coming, at least this time I don't have to wait for that book. Hopefully "Dark and Stormy." Phantom Queen Diaries book 4 will provide some of the answers. Quinn wouldn't want to leave 't'ings' as they are, she is a firm believer that families should not be separated.
The main difference between these books and the rest of the Nate Temple universe is that the storylines here don't resolve nicely. These stories are a hoot to read; filled with action and some intrigue, but they don't offer a fulfilling storyline. I feel like we are waiting for the moment that our heroine finally meets up with Nate for real. Until then we get a bit of fluff and filler.
Quinn comes through again in the end, I think. But that's another story. She succeeds in getting into trouble for a woman who doesn't know what she is. Like most of Shayne's and Cameron's heros and heroines they can be no right decisions. The endings in these books are always a surprise. Which makes you want to keep reading. I guess that's the whole point to the Templeverse.
A good storyline strong characters and lots of action making this an interesting read. Quinn Mackenna always seems to be in the middle of bad situations this time she is involved with a special unit of the FBI helping to track down a Jack the Ripper type serial killer and of course nothing turns out normal. An enjoyable read that keeps you guessing as to what happens next.
I loved this book!💜 I couldn't put it down just like the others in Temple Verse! I have found that I'm happiest when I have my nose buried in any of the books 📚 in this series!! Temple land is the most fun place to be! I can't wait till the next book in Phantom Queen 👑!!! Hurry up Boys!!! LOLOL!!
I really like the story but the some of the time I cannot stand Quinn. Of course this me on the outside looking in but I am having a hard time relating to her. Maybe it is her accent? I do love how the main Templeverse characters are incorporated into the story and there were some terrific puns. I am looking forward to the fourth book.
I'm elated at having the joy of another Quinn adventure in the world of magical freaks that is the templeverse. Sad as we are fast approaching the denouement. Excited again at a hints and possibilities of team ups with Nate, Callie and new freaks. Cameron you have excelled yourself. Thanks as ever Shayne.
New adventures, old and new friendships, some loses, but a few wins. This series is finally merging into the style of the other Templeverse books, but with definitely its own voice. Fast paced, sometimes edge of your seat thrills and of course a LOT of fighting.
Well, I think this will be a fairly short review because I do not really have much to say. It’s not really a bad book but as far as my enjoyment goes it’s a fairly mediocre one. Actually it’s only ten days since I finished reading it and I’m already having difficulty remembering the details. A really good book would stick longer in my memory.
I guess the book blurb kind of hinted that it might not be a great book for me since it talks about anti-heroes. Sometimes I like anti-heroes, if they are well made, but more often than not I don’t. They tend to be selfish and whiny.
The good parts is that the writing is, well, quite good. Shayne Silvers name is on it and either Cameron O’Connell writes just as good or Silvers kept control over the writing quality. The characters, the environment etc… are all well done.
However, the story never really caught my interest. I will not go as far as to say it was boring but it was not that interesting either. I felt pretty much the same about the main protagonist. After having read the ending it was like, yawn, okay that was that, what am I going to read now?
This is the third book in the series and all of them have been 3 out of 5 stars for me. It’s enough that I probably pick up one or two more books in the series but I’m in no hurry to do so.
