Nicolle James is far from her home in the human Sectors, kidnapped by alien scientists to be the subject of horrifying experiments. Her only hope might be a mysterious soldier she’d glimpsed outside the laboratory fence. She’d managed to sneak a few words of conversation with him when her captors weren’t watching but now the aliens were taking her inside the lab to begin the experiments.
Darik, a warrior of the genetically engineered Badari pack, is on a solo recon mission to check out a mysterious new lab high in the mountains. His orders are strict – do not engage. But when he has a chance meeting with the woman who might be his mate, he vows not to abandon her, orders or no orders.
Can he get inside an underground lab, find Nicolle and rescue her without getting captured himself? And when he learns the lab’s deadly secrets, can he get word to his pack about the new dangers?
Because the ruthless alien scientist running the experiments wants to get her hands on him too and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals.
This is the fourth book in a new scifi romance series and each novel has a satisfying Happy for Now ending for the hero and heroine, not a cliffhanger. Some overarching issues do remain unresolved in each book since this is an ongoing series but romance always wins the day in my novels!
USA Today Best Selling Science Fiction & Paranormal Romance author.
Veronica Scott grew up in a house with a library as its heart. Dad loved science fiction, Mom loved ancient history and Veronica thought there needed to be more romance in everything. When she ran out of books to read, she started writing her own stories.

Elvis Presley’s best friend once serenaded Veronica on a local TV telethon…now that could be a novel…
The fourth book in the Sectors New Allies series by Veronica Scott. Nicole James is one of about 20 humans brought to a lab for special testing. But before they are taken into the lab they are forced to remain in a preserve for a few days. During this time Nicole sees a man outside the force field and hopes for help. Darik has orders to recon and not engage. When he realizes time is running out on the humans, he takes action. But is he too late?
A good addition to the series but I have to admit the subject matter was more terrifying for me than the rest of the series so far. I am now anxiously awaiting for the next book in the series.
Ditto Book 3 as with 2....I think the issue is balance. In Book 4, humans are subjected to and surrounded by horrendous death yet once free Nicolle comes up with strip poker to pass the time. Strip poker? Really? And again the operational flaws drive me crazy.
**MEDIUM SPOILERS** This series is fairly large and has connections, I think, to other series. The books are set in the same universe with different planets and different species. I think this book should be read after the first books in the series. The Badari are a group of enhanced soldiers that have had animal DNA spliced into them. Various experiments have been performed on them over the course of several generations. Jadrian and his pack have fangs and claws. They also can communicate telepathically with each other and can spend a fairly long time underwater. There are no female Badari. The doctors, aliens called Khagrish, have done the experiments are generally sadistic in a way that is reminiscent of Nazi Germany. I really liked the first book of the series (Aydarr), because of the female main character, Jill. The second book (Mateer) was pretty good as well. The books after were less well done. Darik is on reconnaissance when he sees Nicolle in a prison that is enclosed in a bubble. He had been raised in a replica of the prison and wants to release her and the people she is with. He is unable to do so on his own. I thought it was unlikely that he would have been sent on his mission by himself. He is accompanied by an AI powered drone. I also thought that, given that he had been the subject of experiments, he might have experienced or talked about PTSD. I think the author missed an opportunity for depth to the story. Nicolle and the other prisoners in her group are subjected to a biological weapon that makes them all sick. The virus/disease quickly becomes out of control and spreads through the complex. Her eventual rescue comes about with a twist. Darik fairly quickly realizes that Nicolle is his mate (this belief stems, I think, from the animal DNA). The story happens over a short period of time. The story was split between Darik and Nicolle’s point of view. The pace is fairly fast. I probably will not continue reading the series. After a strong first book, the remainder haven’t been as good.
Darik (Badari warrior, canine line) & Nicolle James (“I ran the spaceport at the colony,”).
Darik is our first canine Badari to be featured. He is 4th in the canine side of the pack, after the alpha & enforcers.
Darik is on a solo surveillance mission to evaluate one of the smaller facilities not thought to hold any prisoners. He was dropped off at a higher elevation along with MARL12, an auxiliary MARL unit. Darik is enjoying hiking, and hunting, and camping out in the wilderness, and just generally being the alpha predator in the area.
His second morning Darik wakes up to the scent of humans in the woods. Like the Preserve, the humans are contained within a force fielded barrier, out of reach. But when he hears a woman screaming and finds her facing off a local bear like predator, Darik growls back from his side of the barrier, sending the bear fleeing.
Something about the woman calls to Darik, but MARL12 refuses to dissolve the barrier and let Darik rescue her immediately. So he lets Nicolle and the other humans return to the lab, holding off any rescue attempt till after he can call for backup.
Unfortunately this facility isn’t like the others. These Khagrish scientists are working on air based biological weapons sequenced to kill humans, and a single exposure is enough to kill the other 19 humans. Nicolle, though, manages to hang on. And when Darik finishes his data gathering mission, he makes a rescue attempt, only to find himself captured and left chained to a lab table.
Derik was 4th is his canine pack before they merged under Aydarr. A lone wolf according to Jill, Derik enjoys mission were he is in his own. His current mission he is teamed up with MARL 12. They are investigating a remote Khagrish lab. Nocolle managed the space port on the Colony she was kidnapped from. Now in the hands of the Khagrish scientist at a remote lab she and a handful of humans are to be test subjects for biological weapons. Derik in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue Nocolle and the other humans becomes a prisoner him self. The experiments go wrong. The Cimmer who came to observe the findings become victims. Derik.and Nocolle become part of their escapes plan. Derik will do anything to protect his mate. With the help from a boost from Aydarr and some flying instructions form Gabe, they just may have found a space ship. Fast paced and a little steamy. Loved Derik and Nocolle 's story. Great series.
Great sci-fi romance series. Each of the books in Ms Scott's Badari Warriors, Sectors New Allies series carried me away. The men are bio-engineered, the woman human. They've all been captured and tortured yet, through trials and danger, manage to achieve freedom.
Darik finds himself in an untenable situation. He's found humans captured by the Khargish, yet his mission is to observe only. He's drawn to Nicolle and desperately wants to free her. She's more understanding than I would be if someone knew I was kidnapped but wouldn't (couldn't) rescue me.
Adventure, romance, terrific world building, danger, twists, and humor. I couldn't ask for anything more. I'm happy Darik isn't the last in the series.
Another important part of the world building happens in Darik. When Darik sees Nichole James he knows he must rescue her. That leads to a fast paced story line with action and danger. Darik and Nichole are great characters. Nichole is very strong and Darik just what she needs. This is a great addition to the story. It can stand alone but is best if read in order. Now waiting for the next book in the series.
Nicole is a captive of the dreaded Khagrish. Radio is on a fact finding mission to a Khagrish compound. They meet by accident and Radio cannot save her. They meet again when he attempts a rescue. The Khagrish are up to horrifying experiments. It was so good. Wait until you find out some information on the mysterious Chimmer! The Khagrish get some payback. Can't wait for the next book.
Great story. A wonderful blend of action and romance. Scott does excellent worldbuilding and character building. I love that Darik was willing to break the rules for the woman he sensed rather quickly would be his mate. His pack takes that rule-breaking seriously. The villainous Khagrish are bad guys in every sense--and so much fun see taken down by these bad-ass Badari Warriors--soldiers of their making. This is a great series for lovers of SFR.
Nicolle is kidnapped by nasty aliens who love their experiments and is sent on to another lab with eighteen others. As their new lab was being set up the humans were left out in the compound and Nicolle meets Derik. Marl 12 refuses to get Derik into the compound to rescue the humans because it is not their mission. After seeing the extreme cruelty the prisoners were subjected to Mark 12 decides rescuing is reckless but necessary.
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this series until I realized there were books I hadn’t read yet. This book had me on pins and needles with the unexpected actions close to the end. I honestly thought Darik and his lady love were home free after they escaped the lab. Great story planning to Ms. Scott. I can’t wait to read the next book!
Nicole is a prisoner of aliens who use her for experiments . Darik is a warrior doing recon. He finds Nicole and set's about free her but is captured also. This had elements of torture, and drama. The storyline was a continuing of a series books about the Badari and their allies.
I have been enjoying the Badari Warrior books. This is when a human is used to test out a plague with all the other humans. Darik , sent out on a scouting mission, meets up with her. He and the alien AI end up saving her.
This story with Darik and Nicole was exciting….Marl12 took a little getting used to with his not in the mission perimeter. Awesome they have a ship now but hard to grasp the mind talk to space but not from the mountains to the valley. Was weird to figure that one.
