Some of my favourite panels are in this volume ahhh my heart! I love my boys so much and I love how the story is going, this was a really good volumeeee
70. "Retainer's Cause" (従者のタイギ, Jūsha no Taigi) 71. "Three Black Demons" (黒鬼のサンニン, Kuroki no Sannin) 72. "Hiragi in a Cage" (檻の中のヒイラギ, Ori no Naka no Hīragi) 73. "Inside Yu's Sword" (優の刀のナカ, Yū no Katana no Naka) 74. "Love Awakens" (恋がメザメル, Koi ga Mezameru)
I enjoyed this volume as well. The art is stunning as always. I have sooo many questions. I really hope we get to learn more about Yu's background soon. Not a huge fan of the stuff happening rn with Yu being Shinoa's weakness but I'm still excited to see where it goes next.
Despite Mika’s skepticism, the whole crew (even Ferid and Crowley) go to Shibuya. The other humans are not exactly thrilled to let three vampires into the city, but Guren and Shinoa have connections to the ruling Hiragis. At least Yu gets to show Mika his old room! But then Yu, Asuramaru, and Shinoa get into a scuffle with the First that is felt by every vampire in the world.
Favorite bits (spoilers, obviously!): - The way Mika still blushes every dang time he drinks Yu’s blood, even if just from his wrist! - This whole exchange: [Mika] “The Hiragi family, huh? What’s that?” [Mitsuba] “It’s a long story” [Mika] “Ah. I have no time for long stories, so don’t bother…is what I wish I could say. But we’re here now. I need to know. Yu.” [Yu] “Hmm?” [Mika] “What’s the Hiragi family?” [Yu] “Dunno.”…[Mika] “I really don’t like it when people make fun of you, Yu. But I can’t disagree this time – You are dumb.” [Yu] “Hey, that’s mean!” [Mika] “But it’s true.” - Yu getting angrier and angrier at the way Mitsuba’s sister talks to her, implying that she has no right to live except to serve the Hiragis: “How can you say that?! Of course her life has value!!” [Aoi] “Silence. This is none of your business, outsider.” [Yu] “Yes, it is my business. I’m not an outsider!” [Aoi] “Oh? Then what are you?” [Yu] “I’m Mitsuba’s family. The only thing we lay down our lives for is the rest of our family. Your stupid cause can go jump off a cliff for all I care!” And the only reason Aoi can think of for this behavior is that they must be sleeping together! Which, of course, they aren’t…though Mitsuba gets awfully flustered at the suggestion. Yu just ignores the whole issue, as usual. - The way Yu is excited to show Mika his room, even though it is basically a testament to his prior depressed state. [Mika] “Wow, uh…It’s kinda scary how much nothing is in here.” [Yu] “Hm? Now that you mention it… Though last time I was here I thought you were still dead, and the only thing I was really thinking about was getting revenge on vampires. I guess I just didn’t notice.” [Mika] “You were like that the whole time we were apart?” Aww…Mika, do you still not realize? [Yu, flopping down on his bed] “But never mind that! I’m really glad. I never thought that one day the two of us would get to come hang out in my room. Together. Alive.” Mika questions whether they both count as alive, given that his heart doesn’t beat anymore…Which Yu just has to feel for himself! He’s not too fussed about it, though, reminding Mika of his goal to turn him back into a human. Mika puts a finger on his lips, noting that the room is probably bugged, and they’re being watched from the rooftop outside the window. This causes Yu to start shouting: “Hey, everybody eavesdropping on us! Could you listen up a sec!” [Mika, hissing] “Um, Yu? What are you doing?” [Yu, still shouting] “See, we wanna be human again! We’ll totally help out with any experiments and stuff, so let’s all be friends!” [Mika] “SHHH!...So what you’re doing might be right and all, but this is, well, it’s pretty, uh…amazing…” Which isn’t meant as a compliment: “But it is a help. A big help.” [Yu] “What do you mean?” [Mika, smiling] “Don’t worry about it.” I think what he means is that knowing the (kinda dumb) lengths Yu is willing to go to for him is kind of affirming.
(So, let me see if I understand: Not letting someone tell your friend they don’t deserve to live = proof of romantic relationship, if the friends in question are of opposite genders, according to Mitsuba’s sister. But ALL the touchy-feely stuff going on here and everywhere else in this story = “just bros”…according to some fans. Seriously – ARE the straights OK?)
- Kimizuki and Yoichi spotting Mika and Yu leaping around on the rooftops with their swords out, concluding that, whatever idiocy is happening, Yu will probably be fine if Mika is with him, and wandering off to look for Kimizuki’s sister! - Shikama Doji trying to tempt Shinoa with a cure for vampirism for Mika. “If he were to see Mikaela human again, I wonder what kind of look would be on your beloved’s face.” Yeah…and exactly why would that be, hmm? An offer of a way to bring back Yu’s full humanity gets a little more traction. - Yu getting himself in trouble so he’ll be trussed up and brought to the lab, and Mika going along with it because there’s no way he’d let Yu do something that dumb alone! Of course, with Yu’s Seraph powers he’s able to shred the ropes the second he wants to…which is when he hears Shinoa is fighting a monster. Shinoa looks fine, but tells him she can feel Shikama Doji attacking Asuramaru, so Yu makes another detour to go help his demon! - Shikama Doji being cryptic and creepy: “My, look at the two of you [Yu and Asuramaru] standing side by side once again…Yu. It has been so long since I last saw you.” SD seems to be mesmerizing Yu: “It was so simple too. Poor little Yu just wants to be loved, and that left his heart wide open.” But…Yu’s just faking! “I don’t really care about my memories. I have friends now. And family! If I have them, I don’t need anything else!” Nice. - Shinoa being pretty darn badass, busting in to rescue Yu. I almost feel bad for her that, even after SD spells it out for Yu, telling him that she came because she’s in love with him, even though lowering the walls around her heart was the one thing that she must never do…Yu’s relationship with her doesn’t change at all!
This volume picked up exactly where the last one left off. We're with the group in the heart of enemy territory and come face to face with Kureto Hiragi. One of the main antagonists from the series and if I'm remembering right one of the characters that betrayed Yu, Guren and everyone.
We're getting more and more back story to some of the secondary characters too. In the last volume Krul and Asuramaru, this time with Shinoa again but also Mitsuba. Her sister is not nice....neither are the Hiragis. Shinoa's demon also commented upon how he knew Yu and Asuramaru. It makes me think that Yu has been around a lot longer than he can remember. In the flashback, Krul and Ashera (Asuramaru) always looked so close. It makes me wonder about what's going to happen when she realises where is.
The ending! My god the ending. Shinoa sacrificed herself to save Yu and Asuramaru from her demon. In the process, he finally got a hold of her and she awoke a vampire!
I don't know if it's the length of time it's been since I've read the last volume or what, but it felt like things were actually going somewhere in this volume. Not very far; a lot of it seemed to be dialogue based filler. But the plot bombs dropped near the end made up for it a bit. I remembered enough of what happened previously for it to make sense, and the summary at the beginning of the volume was very helpful too. I like this series enough to continue reading it, but not enough to reread the whole series again every time the new volume comes out.
Yo so much is happening I'm seriously lost and so intrigued at the same time! I love that we're finally get more backstories and some questions answered as well!
returning to Vampire Reign after reading the Catastrophe at 16 novels & manga - yes, I did cry starting on page one of this and the ending sure didn't make me stop.
there wasn't nearly enough Guren for me - but what there was, was tough, and the end . . . Guren is pretty single minded, but when it comes to Mahiru, there's always that question. always.
LET'S JUST STOP EXPERIMENTING ON CHILDREN, PLEASE oh wait that's kind of what this is about
[2] It's bad. I don't know an other term to describe it. Yuu is getting annoying (not as annoying as Mika though) and all the things happening this volume (Shinoa gets obsessed by the first vampire to give an example) were unexciting and it felt like the necessary build up for them wasn't there at all. Drawings were fine, although it feels empty, especially the backgrounds. However, I do like the design of the first vampire.

4.5/5 rounded up because oh my god what an ending! I know I said it previously but this really feels like the beginning / inciting action of a new arc (Kagami seems to create false starts based on all the intrigue and surprises i guess). This is a very human centered with Yu's squad and the Hiragi's meeting up. Some exploration of all the gang but mostly Shinoa. Unlike a lot of the more human-centric volumes though I really enjoyed it. I think that's in part as it is also a very demon-heavy volume with multiple humans interacting with their demons (Yu and Asuramaru get a bunch of cool time together in particular.) The plot with Mahiru, Shikama Doji, Shinoa, and Kureto continues to thicken. The second half is where the real action begins as Kagami dives even deeper on Shikama Doji (who is revealed to also be ) as they make many moves attacking Yu and Asuramaru, and later Shinoa. While I think Shinoa’s actions make for an interesting plot with having to “save” her I also think it’s still a bit lame the cold, teasing, calculating girlboss from Volume 1 basically put herself into the damsel-of-distress role over love. Also dang, I just noticed that Mikaela is being drawn for more adult. Like the timeskip made him older but now he's looking much older with the angular facial structure Yamamoto draws him with. And I feel like Yamamoto is struggling on the art-side. Last volume introduced chapters with reduced page count and now he has draw Shikama Doji all the time who's extremely feather-y angelic design is probably a bitch to draw again and again.
I continue to not get what is going on as we get a little more information.😭 Shinoa is getting possessed by the first vampire because of Kureto. Kureto trying to control it himself and has tasked Guren with chaining up him and telling him to kill him or save him if and when he loses control.
I don't understand why this vampire / demon / whatever this crazy monster is wants Shinoa so bad? Like what is the goal here? It also jumps to Yu and tries to posses him as well, while beating his demon up. I understand that though- literally everyone and their demon wants Yu.💀
I'm really not interested at all in Shinoa getting this cool focus but then it's all just because she's in love with Yu and that supposedly makes her weak.
I think I just don't care about the Hiragi family at all or what they are up to unless it's including Shinya.
I ofc loved all the moments between Mika and Yu.🫶 The little humor there always saving the day, especially when Mika called Yu a dumbass. Mika going "my heart doesn't beat anymore, do you wanna feel 🥺👉👈" and Yu touching his chest lmao I know what y'all are.
It was the cutest thing when they both got caught fighting people and end up being tied up and Mika was blushing, so embarrassed while Yu was cheesing it up.😭 Literally the Barbie and Ken getting arrested meme.
Kimizuki saying Yu calls everyone family is sooo true omg.
I am intrigued but I really wish I understood wtf was going on!!!
Despite Mika’s skepticism, the whole crew (even Ferid and Crowley) go to Shibuya. I don't like how this crush it getting too much attention 😑
It's only taken 18 installments to finally start learning about what Shinoa's "deal" is. I don't really like all this talk about breaking taboos when she's only 16, but if there's anything this series has shown... yeah...... we'll see. What on earth is Shinya still doing sticking around though? I feel like he was just too popular to not include in the story (even though it makes no sense. I like him too <3)
Cap 73.
The story might be going in circles, and sometimes, it doesn't make sense. I really wish that Yu (the main protagonist) wasn't like every other Shonen Jump character like a Goku, Naruto, Goh. I really had hopes for his character to be the way he was at the beginning of the series.
I don't like how this crush it getting too much attention 😑 I really like Shinoa but NOT WITH YU. Anyway why is she so important to the first progenitor? and what the hell is happening now? ugh I feel like after every volume I have even more questions than answers it's frustrating
Well first of all yuu was showing that he would do anything for his friends and shinoa should to but shone in the manga panel that he wants what is best for friends it was what made the story good
A interesting volume that focuses on Yuichiro and Ashamaru and their connection potentinally hinting that they knew each before. The fight is weird as it feels like it is to early in a series to fight that person. But I do like that Ferid has basically become a comic relief character.
Also Mangaka ist echt geizig was Informationen angeht...Die Story von Seraph of the end ist noch immer super, aber man kommt irgendwie nur in winzigkleinen Schritten voran, was mich etwas nervt
