Outback Australia #1

Andrew's Outback Love

Rate this book
Dr. Andrew Lowman is an Australian Eye Specialist who has a passion for restoring sight to those who would otherwise endure life with poor eyesight or blindness.

Medical facilities are not easily accessed in the wide-open spaces and isolation of the outback where the air is hot, flies are plenty and life is tough for those on the land.

Thanks to the Flying Doctor Service, Andrew and his team are flown in to a cattle station near Bourke, NSW, where they conduct a regular clinic for the Aboriginals and others on the land in the area. Their time is divided between two stations and the town of Bourke itself. They follow this routine every second week, giving the outback a service it wouldn’t otherwise receive.

Become a part of the outback – the land, they call home.

A land as beautiful as it is harsh. A land which captures the hearts of all those who live on her.

I was born in Manly on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, Australia and grew up in the west after we moved there to help my brother’s eczema which was made worse by salt air. I now reside in the beautiful sunny state of Queensland.

My dad had the biggest impact on my life. I have always had an overactive imagination and would often tell him stories which floated in my mind. He encouraged me to put pen to paper convinced that one day they would become published books.

Apart from marrying the love of my life, the highlight of my life was being accepted into Nursing just before my 16th birthday. It had been a long-time dream and one which encompassed 37 years of my life. Along with nursing, being married to a Naval Officer for almost 47 years, and posted in numerous places, gave me experiences which I have written into many of my books.

We enjoy traveling the country with our Caravan/RV, and Jack Russell puppy by the name of Gemma who will be joining us.

As my parents were British, never Australian citizens, I hold dual citizenship and we plan to take advantage of this to spend two years traveling the UK and Europe in the near future. It will also give me the opportunity to catch up with many family members who reside in England.

My books are in various genres - Western Historical Romance-both steamy and sweet, Contemporary Romance-steamy and sweet, Male/Male, Australian Outback and City Romance. I also have one menage and one paranormal romance along with two children's books. As I said earlier, I have a rather overactive imagination.

I hope you will pick up one of my books and when you close the cover on one of my stories it will be with a satisfied sigh.

Andrew's Outback Love is book one in the new series by Susan Horsnell called Outback Australia Series. Dr Andrew Lowman is a fly in and flies out eye specialist with the help of the Royal Flying Doctors Service goes to rural communities to resort sight. However, after an incident with one of his team members, he decided things need to change. The readers of Andrew's Outback Love will continue to follow Dr Andrew Lowman to see what happens.

Andrew's Outback Love is the first book I have read of Susan Horsnell, and I did enjoy reading it. Susan Horsnell engaged me from the start of this book with the way she portrayed her characters and intertwined them throughout Andrew's Outback Love. Susan Horsnell does a great job to describe for her readers the hardships of living rural communities in Australia. Andrew's Outback Love is well written and researched by Susan Horsnell.

The readers of Andrew's Outback Love will learn about the fantastic job that Royal Flying Doctors Service does for rural communities in Australia. Also, will see the importance of providing eye specialist to rural communities.

I recommend this book.

I've always loved stories and shows about the Royal Flying Doctor Service, something a city girl finds hard to imagine, travelling so far for medical help. Andrew and his crew fly around Australia caring for outback and indigenous families restoring eyesight to children and adults.
A new nurse, inevitably this will be a new romance for the doctor too. Some action in here with the rescue of a little boy. A surprise award show and lots of funny moments round this story into an entertaining read.

I loved the backdrop and premise of the story, but the length of the story made the romance fall short.

I love the idea of the Royal Flying Doctor Service traveling to the remote areas of the outback and in this story dealing with giving sight back to the indigenous population. In the story, the doctors fly from one area out to one of the remote cattle stations where people have walked miles to see Dr. Andrew Lowman. After their first stop, they travel by four-wheel vehicles for 2 to 4 hours to get to each of their next stops, working their way back toward Burke. It is amazing and scary to think about just how far some of these people are from not just a hospital but simply an available doctor.

The backdrop of the Australian Outback is wonderful although I would like a little more description of what Andrew is seeing of the scenery out the plane window or what the outback looks like as they travel and simply more narrative of the different areas and also to meet more of the indigenous peoples who have come to see Andrew.

In this first book, we meet the other members of Andrew's team. We are also meet the people at the various cattle stations and how the various surgeries are set up. The pilots aren't just pilots, they are also trained emergency doctors so they can step in when needed.

My biggest issue with this story was the romance aspect. First it was too short a story to give us anything but insta-love and introduce all the characters and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Secondly, Linda comes in to replace a pregnant nurse who needs to be on bed rest and she is soooo beautiful that all the men on the team are tripping over each other to be Linda's sole focus, even after she tells them that her last boyfriend was abusive and tried to kill her. But Andrew is still disappointed when she wants to take things slow and maybe date other people when he has to be at the hospital in Sydney because the last boyfriend turned out to be nuts. She quickly changes her mind after they spend about two days apart and suddenly she wants to be his girlfriend and they are off having sex.

Now, if this was a different type of story, I might think that Linda's sudden desire for exclusivity might have something to do with the 22,000 acre cattle farm that Andrew purchases for $1M or that if you investigated deeper than Linda's perfect features, you might find that her ex-boyfriend shot her because she was a crazy stalker and not the other way around.   But this is a romance so we need to accept that Linda is traffic stopping gorgeous and that also means she must be brilliant and dedicated and all those other things that Andrew lists about why he likes her, all this after barely meeting her.   Yes, I am jaded. It is not that beautiful women can't be smart, but I don't like the presumption that magazine perfection makes her a better, smarter person without any time getting to know her.

The next book features Ruby, who is one of the nurses, we know she is smart (she has a doctorate) and dedicated (she insisted on a job with the RDS so she could help her people).  Ruby is also an indigenous woman, and because of her, more of the local people turn up to get the help they need.  She a hold-nothing-back woman with an infectious laugh.  I am looking forward to getting to know Ruby better in this next book. Goodread said this story is 210 pages but Amazon notes it at 141 pages. Her romance is with police officer who she knows but doesn't like, so it will be an enemies-to-lovers story and hopefully will gel better than Linda and Andrew's romance.

Received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Wow, the descriptions of the outback were so vivid I could almost feel the perspiration on my own skin from the scorching sun, the dust, the pesky insects as well! However it was the feeling of serenity and peace that was the most vivid and although I have actually been to these places, many years ago, it made me yearn to go back.

I also learnt quite a bit, nothing over the top medically speaking but it was fascinating. You tend to think of cataracts as being an issue for older people, and they are, but congenital cataracts can even affect babies! 😳 Add to that the excitement of medical emergencies and wow, you have a thrilling story!

I enjoyed the great sense of humour sprinkled throughout the story too, from the fun banter between the characters to their sarcastic wit. This balances some of the more serious problems faced in the outback. These issues were handled well in the story and although at times can be prickly topics, because they are real life issues, were written about in a factual and just manner. Not only that at times in the story the scenes were so uplifting I had tears in my eyes with pride.

Andrew Lowman is a fascinating character who really had an interesting life working in both the city and the outback. I liked his attitude towards life and it’s people, plus his self reflection and honesty was so refreshing. Ruby is a card and I am so looking forward to reading her story, it is going to be epic I can already tell. Linda is an absolute sweetheart who just simply fits in and gets on with everyone.

This story has a little bit of everything in it; a sweet yet passionate romance, a little bit of mystery, some drama and action, humour and great friendships as well.

What a great start to a series.
I haven't been to Bourke but felt like I was there, the description was very well done.
First I have read by this author and will read more.

I loved every page of this book. It's about Andrew a successful ophthalmologist in Sydney who travels to out back ranches to help the indigenous people who are going blind. It is his passion and he loves it. He has a highly skilled aboriginal nurse who as well as helping with the surgeries liaisies with the aboriginal families to ease their minds. It's also about the RFDS and how important they are in the out back.

In this novel there is sexy romance, a wonderful storyline and an ending that leaves you hanging for her next book with an unanswered question. I can't wait to read the next one.
