Putting the dreadful Decoded aside, In The Dark is a much better prospect.
The reader is lead through four short stories all of which involve people with unusual and genius talents which are to be used and exploited by China's Secret Service - at the mysterious cryptography Unit 701.
Although Mai Jia's writing is sometimes quite surreal In The Dark is very readable and moves along nicely. Reading Chinese literature, is always interesting, because characters often don't react as we in the West would. Perhaps this is because they are often portrayed as Party members - all work, no play and the Party comes first.
In The Dark feels as though someone like Haruki Murakami has taken Mia Jia over and written a Chinese thriller but then Mia Jia has regained control of himself and written what must be a pretty good depiction of China's repressive regime and the accompanying absurdity that often accompanies secrets and spying.
The reader is lead through four short stories all of which involve people with unusual and genius talents which are to be used and exploited by China's Secret Service - at the mysterious cryptography Unit 701.

This book has so much potential but really the whole book would be better marketed as a short story collection. There's no real link between each story. It's almost just a collection of 4 stories about people with variations of Asperger's syndrome. That's a pretty parsimonious description but may seem quite prescient once you've finished the book.
It is a strange novel. I picked it up for $2 at a book sale, written by the supposed "Chinese John le Carre" and best selling author in China. I got it in an attempt to further understand Chinese cultural differences, secondly, to see what stories people in China are reading these days and lastly because the blurb caught my eye. The novel was undermined by either a sub-par translator or the writer being unable to edit his own material. To compare it to other authors I would say it was like a combination of Haruki Murakami and John Le Carre but written by an unskilled high school student (that could have been a translation issue though). There's too many laboured details, things said over and over again in slightly different ways, repetition after repetition, description followed by a similar description, explanations of explanations, summaries of already summarised materials, like some long drawn out distillation process, a slow tedious simmering of material where you can't just have the final reduction you have to experience the reducing. Now you know what I'm talking about. I am however open to this strange writing style as a pastiche of the Chinese communist party way of writing. Potentially the writer is purposely writing in a bureaucratic fashion to emulate what the Chinese would recognise as the party line. The narrator is supposedly opening the vault on the mysterious Unit 701, though it's not made clear if he's writing a party report or just sharing the story with the general public.
On another note the genius component and magic parts of the story are well executed but lack the mesmerising quality other magic-realist authors like Murakami often endow their prose with, they also could have gone deeper. It's almost like there is a Chinese imperative to stick strictly to facts and to not delight too much in what verges on supernatural (even recognising the nature of the narrators recording purposes). As already mentioned the writing is too repetitive and laboured, it needs a Hemingway slap across the face.
Reading Chinese cliches, similes and metaphors is quite enjoyable but also very strange and at times almost opaque for a western reader. Take for example "There is a saying that some women are quite shrewish and some men toadying." Or what seems to be a classic Chinese proverb "you always save the best steel for knives". The second I can kind of understand but the first seems to need the cultural context of having grown up in China and it diminishes your appreciation of the text without that background. Contrast that to how easily a western audience digests the General Patton quote used towards the end. "There's only one proper way for a professional soldier to die: the last bullet of the last battle of the last war". It's so easy for a western audience to understand.
In saying all this you'll still be delighted by Abing, Huang Yiyi, Chen Erdu and a few of the others, you'll keep reading largely to find out what happens to these tortured geniuses. Unfortunately, the main characters are mostly interesting in contrast to the bland supporting cast and surrounding characters and you'll be worn down by the way the brutal regime celebrates them in the shadows.
There's a famous story that Mao's favourite book was a little known French novel. Whenever the French ambassadors went to China he would ask them about it and rave about how great it was. The ambassadors would be confused and on reading the original French version remain confused as it seemed like a pretty run of the mill story with a unimpressive and poorly aged prose style. In the end it turned out that the person who had translated the novel into Chinese was possibly one of the greatest Chinese writers of all time; he had taken this French novel and turned it into a masterpiece through translation. It may be with In The Dark that the opposite process has happened and what was a glowing piece of literature has, through translation, become a sputtering light.

this novel is a collection of four novellas loosely linked together. they tell the story of a mysterious chinese intelligence service working in the mountains, decrypting ciphers and codes as a matter of national importance. even better, it's written by "china's answer to john le carré"! sounds fun, right?
so, i was pretty excited when i picked it up, and it started off okay. and it stayed okay. and it ended okay. and that was it. it was basically the book equivalent of a flatline. i think the language has been poorly translated because it's rather clumsy, and the plot is pretty dull - it got to a point where i was so bored with it that i often dreaded picking the book back up again.
i have no idea where the le carré comparisons come from, either. le carré's novels are full of complex twists and turns, as duplicitous people work for duplicitous agencies. and through that there is a subtle (or often overt) criticism of said agencies, their agents, their shady actions, and even the concept of nationhood. so, of course, such a thing can't exist in a chinese book, which would have been censored by the chinese state before it even got to a printing press.
in the dark is what you get when you take an espionage thriller and minus the intrigue, plotting, and duplicity. oh, and the espionage.

In China, Mai Jia is the king of spy novels, a Chinese equivalent to someone like John Le Carré, but whose work has a distinctly surrealist element to it. In The Dark tells three tales of the mysterious code-breakers at Unit 701 - China's top-secret intelligence unit tasked.
The three stories share this common setting and a similar cast of characters - all are linked also by their obsession towards codes and ciphers. There is the "wind listener" -a blind man whose supernatural hearing enables him to discern even the sex of a barking dog; there is an unstable maths genius who cracks the Kuomintang's newest, best code but meets an unfortunate end at the hands of her lover's wife; an old man so obsessed with codes he deciphers them in his dreams; and lastly, a tale of subterfuge and deception during the Vietnam War.
In The Dark is an enjoyable spy novel, made special by its plot - it's rare to see China play a main role in espionage novels so to see the Cold War's high-stakes game of spycraft from the Chinese perspective is particularly noteworthy.

Intricately woven and smart, yet the pacing was furious and relentless. I couldn't decide to take pause to ponder over some points or keep on flipping. For some time, I had stopped reading spy fiction since I could not stomach another of the Ludlum/Clancy variety. Discovering this book reignited my love for spy fiction. That said, this book was more of a mixed-genre work, with heavy mystery/spy overtones but the overall feel would be 'literary fiction'.
Recommended for all mystery/spy genre lovers who cannot stand the commercial variety.

a decent fantasy book tells China's secret agency 'Unit 701' comrades unique stories during wartime. This book told that love/passion for someone or things can led a person to their death in strange ways.

April 19, 2021آنچه در رمان «در تاریکی» مای جیا، نویسندهی چینی متولد 1964، در کانون تمرکز قصه قرار گرفته، زندگی سازمانی است. جیا خود سالها در ارتش آزادیبخش خلق چین خدمت کرده و به زیر و بم رفتار سازمانی خاصی که بر این نظام حاکم است، آشنایی دارد و آثار داستانی او نیز اغلب حول همین محور نوشته شدهاند. در دو رمان دیگر او، «رمزگشاییشده» و «آوای باد» او همانگونه که در اثر اخیرش به آن پرداخته، با موشکافی به اعماق سرویس اطلاعات و امنیت چین نقب میزند تا به بهانهی روایت داستانی از دل این سازمان که معمولاً پنهان از چشم عموم مردم است، رازهایی را بیرون بکشد که دانستن آنها را حق مسلم همگان میداند.

خلأ سیستم شنود و رمزگشایی در سازمان برای یکی از همکاران باسابقهی مای جیا فرصتی فراهم میآورد تا خودی نشان دهد و زیرکی و مسؤولیتپذیری خود را در معرض نمایش رؤسای خود بگذارد. چیزی که در قدم اول ساده به نظر میآید اما سرشار از ظرایف و معضلاتی است که او تا از نزدیک لمسشان نکرده، از آنها غافل مانده است. از او میخواهند که در یک دورهی زمانی بسیار کوتاه نیروهایی تازه با توانمندی بسیار بالا و قابلیت اعتماد صددرصد برای سیستم اطلاعات و امنیت چین پیدا کند. این سیستم که واحد 701 نام دارد، قوانینی وضع کرده که حداکثر رازداری و کمترین میزان درز اطلاعات محرمانه را تأمین کند. چیزی که در اغلب کشورها به اشکال و عناوین مختلف جاری است.
افرادی که برای واحد 701 کار میکنند باید آنقدر امنیت ملی را در اولویت خود قرار دهند که در مواقع لزوم بدون ذرهای تردید زندگی خود را تماماً فدای آن کنند. به همینخاطر ابتداییترین آزادیهای این افراد، تحتتأثیر این تعهد از دست میرود. این آدمها دیگر نمیتوانند با دنیای بیرون به راحتی ارتباط برقرار کنند. تنها راه برقراری ارتباط در زمانی که داستان روایت میشود (اوایل دههی نود میلادی)، نوشتن نامه است. اما حتی نامهها نیز تحت کنترل شدید و بازخوانیهای مکرر قرار میگیرد تا به دست گیرنده برسد. بخشی از آنها در میان اسناد محرمانه طبقهبندی میشوند تا زمانی که ارزش اطلاعاتی خود را از دست بدهند و این مسأله گاه تا سالها زمان میبرد. این وضعیت حتی برای وفادارترین و سرسپردهترین افراد سازمان به سختی تحمل میشود. شخصیتهای این رمان نیز از این موضوع شکایت دارند و شاید این اصلیترین مسألهی آنهاست؛ اینکه زندگی شخصی برای آنها بیمعنی است.
افرادی که برای بخشهای مختلف واحد شنود و رمزگشایی اطلاعات انتخاب میشوند جزء نخبهترین و مستعدترینها در حرفهی خود هستند. بهعنوان مثال برای رهگیری امواج و فرکانسهای مختلف که نیاز به شنوایی بسیار قوی و توانایی در تشخیص کوچکترین امواج صوتی و تفکیک آنهاست. رمزنگاری نیاز به قوهی تمایز بالایی در امواجی که رمزها را میسازند، دارد. برای چنین بخشهایی افراد به مناطق مختلف چین فرستاده میشوند تا استعدادیابی کنند و نیروهای توانمند را به سازمان بیاورند.
برای این سیستم مهم نیست این افراد چه درجه از مشکلات شخصی را از سر میگذرانند و با فاصله گرفتن از خانواده و حریم شخصی چه آسیبهای روانی به آنها وارد. افرادی که جذب این نظام اطلاعاتی میشوند گرچه در آغاز به خاطر تواناییهای خود مورد ستایش قرار میگیرند و منافع مالی بسیاری کسب میکنند که به آنها انگیزه برای تداوم همکاری با سازمان میبخشد، اما بهتدریج به دلیل انزوا و محرومیتهای عاطفی و نقصان در روابط اجتماعی، دچار فروپاشی روانی میشوند. مای جیا تلاش میکند به بخشهای مختلف ادارهی شنود اطلاعات سرک بکشد و از آسیبهایی جبرانناپذیر بگوید که بر زندگی آدمهای متعهد به این سیستم وارد میشود. «در تاریکی» نمونهای از نظامهای روابط انسانی را به تصویر میکشد که فردیت آدمها را نادیده میگیرد و به آنها همچون ابزارهایی صرف در رسیدن به اهدافی به ظاهر جمعی نگاه میکند. وقتی زمان انقضای مصرف این ابزارها فرا میرسد، فارغ از اینکه چهقدر کارا و کوشا و مقید به سیستمی بودهاند که در آن عمر خود را گذاشتهاند، به دامن فنا سپرده میشوند: «روزی که آنهمه منتظرش بودیم سرانجام فرارسید. آن موقع، احساسم به گونهای بود که انگار در بیابان آنقدر راه رفتهام که خون کالبدم و حتی ریزترین ذرات رطوبت نوک موهایم در معرض بادهای سوزان خشک شده. اما درست همان موقع که توانمان تحلیل رفته بود، یا شاید بهتر است بگویم، درست همان موقع که احساس میکردیم واپسین لحظات عمرمان رسیده، ناگهان چشممان به چشمهی عمیق آبی رنگی افتاد که قطرههایش حبابوار به صورتمان میپاشید، جان تازهای به ما میبخشید، و از شعف و شگفتی ما را به لرزه میانداخت. جانمان از سر بلاتکلیفی در اضطراب بود، روحمان از سر بلاتکلیفی در اضطراب بود!»

خلأ سیستم شنود و رمزگشایی در سازمان برای یکی از همکاران باسابقهی مای جیا فرصتی فراهم میآورد تا خودی نشان دهد و زیرکی و مسؤولیتپذیری خود را در معرض نمایش رؤسای خود بگذارد. چیزی که در قدم اول ساده به نظر میآید اما سرشار از ظرایف و معضلاتی است که او تا از نزدیک لمسشان نکرده، از آنها غافل مانده است. از او میخواهند که در یک دورهی زمانی بسیار کوتاه نیروهایی تازه با توانمندی بسیار بالا و قابلیت اعتماد صددرصد برای سیستم اطلاعات و امنیت چین پیدا کند. این سیستم که واحد 701 نام دارد، قوانینی وضع کرده که حداکثر رازداری و کمترین میزان درز اطلاعات محرمانه را تأمین کند. چیزی که در اغلب کشورها به اشکال و عناوین مختلف جاری است.
افرادی که برای واحد 701 کار میکنند باید آنقدر امنیت ملی را در اولویت خود قرار دهند که در مواقع لزوم بدون ذرهای تردید زندگی خود را تماماً فدای آن کنند. به همینخاطر ابتداییترین آزادیهای این افراد، تحتتأثیر این تعهد از دست میرود. این آدمها دیگر نمیتوانند با دنیای بیرون به راحتی ارتباط برقرار کنند. تنها راه برقراری ارتباط در زمانی که داستان روایت میشود (اوایل دههی نود میلادی)، نوشتن نامه است. اما حتی نامهها نیز تحت کنترل شدید و بازخوانیهای مکرر قرار میگیرد تا به دست گیرنده برسد. بخشی از آنها در میان اسناد محرمانه طبقهبندی میشوند تا زمانی که ارزش اطلاعاتی خود را از دست بدهند و این مسأله گاه تا سالها زمان میبرد. این وضعیت حتی برای وفادارترین و سرسپردهترین افراد سازمان به سختی تحمل میشود. شخصیتهای این رمان نیز از این موضوع شکایت دارند و شاید این اصلیترین مسألهی آنهاست؛ اینکه زندگی شخصی برای آنها بیمعنی است.
افرادی که برای بخشهای مختلف واحد شنود و رمزگشایی اطلاعات انتخاب میشوند جزء نخبهترین و مستعدترینها در حرفهی خود هستند. بهعنوان مثال برای رهگیری امواج و فرکانسهای مختلف که نیاز به شنوایی بسیار قوی و توانایی در تشخیص کوچکترین امواج صوتی و تفکیک آنهاست. رمزنگاری نیاز به قوهی تمایز بالایی در امواجی که رمزها را میسازند، دارد. برای چنین بخشهایی افراد به مناطق مختلف چین فرستاده میشوند تا استعدادیابی کنند و نیروهای توانمند را به سازمان بیاورند.
برای این سیستم مهم نیست این افراد چه درجه از مشکلات شخصی را از سر میگذرانند و با فاصله گرفتن از خانواده و حریم شخصی چه آسیبهای روانی به آنها وارد. افرادی که جذب این نظام اطلاعاتی میشوند گرچه در آغاز به خاطر تواناییهای خود مورد ستایش قرار میگیرند و منافع مالی بسیاری کسب میکنند که به آنها انگیزه برای تداوم همکاری با سازمان میبخشد، اما بهتدریج به دلیل انزوا و محرومیتهای عاطفی و نقصان در روابط اجتماعی، دچار فروپاشی روانی میشوند. مای جیا تلاش میکند به بخشهای مختلف ادارهی شنود اطلاعات سرک بکشد و از آسیبهایی جبرانناپذیر بگوید که بر زندگی آدمهای متعهد به این سیستم وارد میشود. «در تاریکی» نمونهای از نظامهای روابط انسانی را به تصویر میکشد که فردیت آدمها را نادیده میگیرد و به آنها همچون ابزارهایی صرف در رسیدن به اهدافی به ظاهر جمعی نگاه میکند. وقتی زمان انقضای مصرف این ابزارها فرا میرسد، فارغ از اینکه چهقدر کارا و کوشا و مقید به سیستمی بودهاند که در آن عمر خود را گذاشتهاند، به دامن فنا سپرده میشوند: «روزی که آنهمه منتظرش بودیم سرانجام فرارسید. آن موقع، احساسم به گونهای بود که انگار در بیابان آنقدر راه رفتهام که خون کالبدم و حتی ریزترین ذرات رطوبت نوک موهایم در معرض بادهای سوزان خشک شده. اما درست همان موقع که توانمان تحلیل رفته بود، یا شاید بهتر است بگویم، درست همان موقع که احساس میکردیم واپسین لحظات عمرمان رسیده، ناگهان چشممان به چشمهی عمیق آبی رنگی افتاد که قطرههایش حبابوار به صورتمان میپاشید، جان تازهای به ما میبخشید، و از شعف و شگفتی ما را به لرزه میانداخت. جانمان از سر بلاتکلیفی در اضطراب بود، روحمان از سر بلاتکلیفی در اضطراب بود!»

این کتاب داستان واحد ویژه ۷۰۱ را تعریف میکند.. سازمانی برای جاسوسی که سه شاخه اصلی داشت:

Pimeä voima ei ole oikeastaan romaani vaan neljän pienoisromaanin kokoelma. Kaikki tarinat kertovat Kiinan "huippusalaisen tiedusteluyksikön 701:n" työntekijöistä, jotka ovat toinen toistaan erikoisempia. Tyylilajiltaan tarinat ovat enemmän surrealiastisia kuin realistisia, siinä määrin lennokkaita juonikuviot ovat (niin tosin ovat tosielämän vakoilujututkin). Tarinat sijoittuvat ajallisesti 1940-60 -luvuille ja ovat olevinaan "arkistojen kätköistä vihdoinkin julkistettuja tositarinoita".
Mai Jia on Kiinassa hyvin suosittu kirjailija, ja tarinat ovat hyvin kirjoitettuja. Jäin silti kaipaamaan laajempaa tarinankaarta, joka olisi kenties nivonut paremmin yhteen neljä pienoisromaania tai jopa tuonut esiin jonkin syvällisemän ajatuksen tai ajatuksia, jonka Mai Jia haluaa kirjallaan viestittää. Roman birkaç bölümde farklı karakterlere ağırlık vererek ilerliyor. Yarı dahi yarı deli Abing, aşk kadını Huang Yiyi, işkolik Chen Erhu, zeki ajan Kuğu... Onlara göre gündelik, bize göre sıradışı olan olaylar; ailelerinden bile gizlemek zorunda oldukları sırlar, kriptograf olmanın psikolojisi işlenmiş. Kolayca okunabilecek bir kitap, keyif aldım.

As a Westerner, I found this a very interesting perspective, due to it being set in the 20th century and translated from Mandarin. It is like a collection of short stories but told as a single novel. My favourite was the final story which was funny and imaginative.
My least favourite was the one about a woman. I found her very unrelatable and unsympathetic, although it seemed like we were supposed to be rooting for her. Not sure if that meant she was an unrealistic depiction of a woman, or just that she was a type of person who I do not like.

Vika on nyt luultavasti minussa, mutta pieni Liinu ei nyt oikein jaksa tajuta eikä keskittyä. Tämä tuntui todella hajanaiselta, neljä eri tarinaa samoissa kansissa. Ehkä yritän joskus myöhemmin uudestaan.

The middle part is goddam irritating because it sort of drifted to romance genre rather than what I was hoping to find - mystery and thriller or even enlightenment regarding decryption of ciphers. I would say the last story out of the three is the best - meaningful and to the point.

The espionage comes pretty secondarily to the life questions and sacrifices of our characters whose lives become dedicated to their mission, whether they like it or not. I think this book is a great example of some of the extremes of political loyalty in china, even if it’s fiction.

Lots of repetition, a lot of description about the job feels forced and artificially being elevated to a certain spiritual level. I guess you can read it for fun but not thought provoking at all

Truyện thứ hai về cô gái tài năng Hoàng Y Y nổi loạn và phóng khoáng nhưng vô cùng giỏi về toán cao cấp và giải mật mã.

Sad overall feeling about reading this book, it describes an overwhelming secretiveness about the era it was written in and the regime that people lived under. It’s a good read and at times very straightforward but somehow hides second meanings that you pick up on yourself as a reader. I felt very bad for a lot of characters while reading and I think the plots are strongly written.
