Deirdre Baker did a magical favor for a bunch of shapeshifters and barely lived to regret it. She has enough trouble paying the bills and keeping her coven off her back without worrying about whether some wolf alpha dies of poison. But when Miles "I always get my way" Evershaw orders his pack to kidnap her, Deirdre finds herself in over her head before she can even hex the infuriating man.
Miles Evershaw didn't expect the witch to be cooperative, not after the pack hunted her down, and he never imagined she'd be young and beautiful and completely out of her mind. But when she saved his life -- twice -- and he catches a glimpse of the kind, funny woman underneath the magic, the wolf alpha knows he needs her in his life. Even if it means getting hexed -- a lot.
Deirdre wants freedom and Evershaw needs control. He expects to be obeyed and she flaunts the rules. With the coven searching for Deirdre for its own reasons and half the city trying to kill Evershaw, can they survive long enough to stop arguing and finally agree -- to love?
Re read: I really liked Witch Hunt and War Witch and I'm damn sorry that her other books are far from this good.

I think I should say how sorry I am I judged this book from its cover (and that I compared to the lower group of fake pnr out there) :)
Do not mistake me, it has its problems, namely that the book has 2 parts that don't really mesh if you think about it or that the epilogue repeats almost verbatim what you read in the last chapter. But you know what? I really enjoyed it and while reading none of it bothered me at all. There's a mate bond but it doesn't drive the story and, well, it doesn't compel anyone to do anything.
The book is the first in a new series, but clearly is actually book "n" in a previous one too. There's lot of backstory that's hinted to. It doesn't matter much, as everything is clear, but I expect that those who read the previous books will enjoy it more.
I am not a fan of the cover. Sorrynotsorry. The first half of the book, I am not fan either. But I ended up liking the second half. Makes sense to give it 3. 😊
2.5... maybe 3 stars, why? because I was expected to know details about the world of the novel and characteristics of the MCs that was mentioned in the previous series-which I did NOT read, like how old is miles? what how did the female MC's mother died? ...etc- I expected more details, seriously and that was annoying cuz I love magic/werewolves genre
Was way too long though, and it would have been nice with just a little explanation of the backstory. I mean, how old is Miles? How did her mother die? Why is she so devastated? Maybe it has been explained in some of her other books, I have no clue?
The heroine is a very powerful witch grieving her mother's death which has left her emotionally drained and vulnerable to people using her for their own ends.
The main male character is a low-rent misogynist who, in turn for her saving him from certain death, has her magically-leashed, kidnapped, locked-up, treats her like dirt, forces her to use her abilities to save his butt further, and then, when she completes the mission so she is able to escape, he re-kidnapps her by taking advantage of her being drugged by someone else and pretends it was her idea to be with him, compares him being an asshole towards her with her being a bitch towards him (as if he didn't do any of the above and she had no reason to behave unpleasantly towards him), gives her life advice (which was so laughable for a person who thinks kidnapping is a good life choice I can't even), compliments her looks and, like the vulnerable and lonely woman she is, made worse by the lingering effects of the drugs and having been betrayed by EVERYONE at this point, laps it all up and starts making out with him.
The whole thing was gross and disgusting.
Oh, and Mercy is one the most annoying characters I have ever had to read.
There’s good story here, but there are flaws that keep it from being a good novel.
It seems to copy what you get from other series without really understanding why. At one point someone states that magic must be hidden, yet the witch MC clearly did something profoundly unnatural when she froze a glass of vodka at a bar solid enough it broke the glass. And there is no rhyme or reason for how or why magic works. It acts more as a Deus Ex lever for the author than a part of a functioning world.
This also felt a bit like it wasn’t the first book, as many times characters reference earlier actions. But it was actually better written for all that, as I did not feel like I was missing anything in particular.
I can’t recommend this book as the flaws worked against it, but it is not a terrible example of the genre.
I normally don't leave reviews but this book deserves one. I generally choose this kind of book as a easy distraction, something to pass the time in a waiting room or a wind down bedtime read that you can put down and pick up again whenever. The kind you don't really have to engage with, but, this is different. It has all the requisites of the genre but it's written properly. It's got a depth of detail and insight, it's considered, it flows. The characters and their interactions with each other and their motivations are all really well thought out and written. It's a grown up version, a proper, well rounded tale that you really can and do engage with. Thank you, really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend. An excellent read!
The story was good but I wish I knew more about the world and characters too. I feel like the author expects you to read her previous books to truly understand the story which I didn’t read. I wish she would’ve summarized a bit about the previous books so we can understand the world and characters better.
Also, I don’t know if the book ever was professional edited because things or scenes will happen and they will be mentioned again in a different chapter, as if it didn’t happen and we would have to read the scene again but with different words. Maybe the author wanted to make her book longer or something but it was so frustrating reading things again and again.
I’ll read the next book just because I’m interested in Mercy’s story but I seriously wish her next books will be different.
Pros: The characters were likable and there was a good amount of humor and action. The supporting characters were really fun and entertaining. The plot and story line was good and pretty well done. Cons: It was just way to long, with too much unneeded inner dialogue. There were some pretty confusing editing issues, for example characters would be on a couch doing something or in a specific location and the in the next sentence or paragraph they are somewhere else but doing the same thing. If it was a little shorter and the editing better it would be a solid 5.
Schade.
4.5 STARS to Kayla Nash for this wonderful shifter and witch story she has told in a new exciting way. The magic is stunning and the interaction between the beings of magical beast amazing and brings out suprises in the story. Evershaw's Pack is building up to be a terrific one to watch out for not discounting the other Packs he is connected to. WARNING: 18 & Up SEXUAL CONTENT: Yes Sexual Intercourse & more
Pros: The 'fated mates' trope is used but it doesn't dominate the story. Smart (most of the time), independent and a full adult behaving heroine. Arrogant but decent and considered alpha male There is a cat (yeah that's a pro) A pretty simple but still interesting enough plot.
Cons: Sooo looong and dragging.... and yet at the end of the book we don't really know much about the hero and secondary characters. Only the heroine is truly developed (or at least we know what she enjoys to do and a little bit about her life before meeting the alpha male).
This was 100% enemies to lovers. Both miles and Deirdre hated each other and Deirdre had a really good reason. It's fated mates so insta love is a givin. I liked it but there relationship really started to change for no reason. Miles hadn't done anything (in my opinion) to make her stop hating him but I guess the mate bond had a lot to do with it. This is a substantial story and kept me entertained the whole time.
I had bought this and forgotten, so finding it was like a great surprise present. And what a fantastic book it is! If you've read some of the author's Price or Den series you'll be familiar with Miles, constantly known as a difficult, arrogant and deliberately annoying alpha. But in this book, he comes into his own. And it's wonderful, absorbing storytelling by a brilliant author.
I liked this one a little bit more than 'War Witch' since the ending was more completed. So, I still would like to read the next book of this series. Deirdre was as bad-ass as Lily but more graspable. The dynamic between her and Miles was first explosive and then very sweet. I liked it very much. Also the world was as intriguing as in 'War Witch'. Mrs Nash creats a whole magical world with a complete idea of the different factions like shifters or witches and so on. It was beautifully to read.
Deirdre is a strong witch who lost her mom and wasn't comfortable with her Aunts coven. She helped return a djinn from the in between and was owed a favor from him and an ancient fae. When she is asked to heal a wolf alpha who has been poisoned she is dragged into wolf pack drama that flusters her but awakes her icy demeanour. When someone keeps targeting them it's up to Miles and her to find the culprit and solidify their bond.
I enjoyed all the elements of this book it did need a bit of editing but my main contention is the end of the book. The resolution sucked the epilogoue the chapter before basically say the same thing. I was hoping for a more conclusive happy ending in the epilogoue. Outside of that the characters and story line are well developed. It was also a funny read
I really didn't suspect Palmer at first that he could be the one doing all that to Miles. I suspected him when Miles was hexed after the confrontation at the flower shop. I thought it was the aunt trying to get Deidre to bend to her will. That was a hell of a close call.
The writing in this one book was built on the others in this series and was definitely superior to the others. Also, the main characters were different from others in the various series which made it more interesting and because of that fact, I've re-read this book several times and enjoyed it each time. Love to see the next story involving these characters.
I started out skeptical, but WOW it turned into a great story! Wasn't sure how I would feel about a whole book about Miles Evershaw based on his past actions in the other books. But, by the end of this book I was a fan. The other characters were great also! Totally ended up loving it, probably my favorite in the City Shifters series!
I received this book for an honest review. the characters are off the hook the alphas an asshole LOL but d helps him he falls in love again. paint the shifter she's a witch and this is a very long book it will keep you on the edge until you're finished
I felt like the switch from hate to love was too instant. Also the epilogue made no sense because they already talked about that stuff literally pages before and it was apparently a new subject for them. Also WAYYY too long
Miles is a strong Alpha male. Deirdre is a witch. When the two meet it is sparks flying. Two very strong characters. The storyline is very good. We see new characters and old ones in this book.
Very enjoyable read, it’s almost like a full series in one book in my humble opinion. Multiple conflicts and resolutions throughout the book with the relationship building continuously throughout the whole book. Very, very steamy when they do come together.
i fucking despise the male lead, im not somebody who is sensitive to assholes but he is ungrateful pathetic weak boy (not even a man) there was no redeeming qualitys to him. 1.25⭐ 0.25 is for the girl only and i hated everyother character everybody is pathetic
Loved the storyline, but needed some serious proof reading done with editing fixes. Easy to get distracted with the editing problem. Otherwise enjoyed the book.
