I read this entire book in one day, mostly in one sitting. I think the main reason I seemed to whizz through this book was because the chapters were short and split between the two characters, so it was very easy to think "oh, just one more chapter" and before you know it you've read ten more chapters! I loved the concept of this book, the storyline was fantastic. YouTube and social media is such a prominent part life today that I'm surprised there aren't more books like this. I also really liked that this book covered a lot of issues, such as confidence, idolisation, trolling, the news/media, workload, obsession/stalking, toxic relationships, friendships, and so much more. It really does cover a wide range of themes and it manages to do it in a very realistic way. The characters are also brilliantly portrayed. Melissa was a character that I didn't particularly like, at times I wanted to reach into the book and shake her to snap her out of her strange blogging habit, but it made her more real and I can completely understand that there are people who do this with YouTubers/bloggers/influencers. There were a couple of moments in this book that I could even relate to things I've seen happen online recently, such as Tanacon. There's a moment where our YouTuber character, Lily, turns up at an event and there's more people at the venue than their should be, and they talk about how people with tickets might not even get in! It just goes to show that a situation like this might seem crazy to some, but it's really happening out there. There are YouTubers and social media "stars" who have scandals and have to release statements, there are YouTubers who are caught up in arguments and they throw shade at each other in their videos, the list goes on. Honestly, I think this is a very important book and should be read by everyone who thinks people who have a successful YouTube channel or blog are perfect, or people who aspire to be them. As someone who has had a blog for over four years and a BookTube channel for a year and a half, it's not all glamorous, it's hard work and takes up a lot of time. I do it because I enjoy it, not because I want to be recognised and have lots of brand deals. I have a job that I love, a career that I'm building, and all of the blogging and other stuff is just something I do for fun in my spare time. Seriously, pick this book up because it really does shine a light on something that is a big part of most young people's lives.

Lengvam vakaro pasiskaitymui.

This is book I din't know I needed. Sometimes it's so easy to get caught up in the world of social media and forget what is real and actually in front of you. Charlotte Seager's writing style is exquisite she portrays 2 different women discovering their way through life while showing you how social media can take a toll on your life.

I cannot recommend this book enough and can't wait to see what Charlotte writes next

This book has such great idea and writing. Although the plot is quite simple and predictable, it somehow still made me curious to want to know what would happen next. The story’s building and dramas were suspenseful which I enjoyed. I loved that the story conveyed an incredible message, about not to believe everything on social media is perfect and how you should care for your true self in real life, not one on social media, especially appreciate genuine things around you.

To powieści, której idea bardziej mnie zachęciła do lektury niż późniejsza historia zdołała zaciekawić. Samą Lily można polubić z retrospekcji (początków jej kariery), zaś Melissa to postać, z którą ciężko sympatyzować.

Tytuł chwytliwy, bo odnoszący się do coraz to bliższej społeczeństwu kwestii prowadzenia podwójnego życia: szarej codzienności i o wiele ciekawszej jej wersji w Internecie.

For anyone who has ever doubted the influence social media has on us/our mental health, this is a must-read. Told through alternating viewpoints, it forces us to take a moment to consider the extent to which we pander to an idealised notion of our lives and the need to affirm our sense of self through the responses of others.
Lily is a YouTube sensation. Initially a vlogger who gave make-up tutorials from her bedroom, she’s become a brand. Her life is dominated by the need to chronicle what she’s doing and to perpetuate the glossy lifestyle her fans seem to think is her reality. Yet Lily knows that isn’t the case, but how can she break out of the very thing that once brought her such relief?
Alongside Lily we have 16 year old Melissa. Determined to emulate the social media profiles of those she admires, Melissa gets caught up in a web of deceit that causes some pretty unpleasant reactions.
Inevitably the two lives collide, though not quite in the way I was expecting.
Fun to read, engaging characters and a timely wake-up call.
Thank you NetGalley.

I finished this in a day...

So this is a story told from two different perspectives. On one hand we have Lily Henshaw- a famous YouTuber and makeup guru. Her life is perfect to her audience and her and Bryan are apparently #couplegoals. but nobody really knows the truth- her life is falling apart.

On the other hand, we have Melissa Davies- a schoolgirl who wants her life to go from boring to something more. She's been watching Lily's vlogs for NINE YEARS. So she starts to fake her life online and everything goes wrong from there.

Melissa's character really annoyed me, but I saw why it was necessary. She is how I see most kids today and these things DO happen in real life. Lily's life is nothing like the one she portrays online. Her relationship is breaking apart, and she doesn't want to be the centre of attention anymore.

I loved the premise for this. This book needs to be read by kids everywhere who are addicted to social media. It highlights the issues of body image that society deems as 'beautiful'. I really loved how through Melissa's life we see the dangers of social media, and how it can lead us to become a different person. People need to understand that although social media is a good platform for advertising, it's not always safe and everyone needs to make sure they are sure of the content they post when doing so.

Highly recommend!!

Liebe Daisy,

I must say I am positively surprised by this book!

I got this book last year wrapped up as a mystery book, so I had no clue about this book and I admit it wasn't a top priority to read for me. Now I've finally come around to read this book and noticed I actually like this story.

Usually, I'm not for stories of obsessed fangirls as I myself am rather thrown back when it comes to celebrity crushed and all. Don't get me wrong I am a fangirl myself for characters, actors/actresses, books, authors, etc., but I always still think about the people behind it all and see them as normal people who don't want to be bothered all the time and deserve their privacy. So with this known about me, I hated Melissa's role of the obsessed and stalker-like little naive girl she was. I mean what gives a stranger the right to pull one situation out of your life with no context at all and misinterpret it to destroy all you've worked with some shitty gossip. But I sadly have to admit that with the internet and social media controlling our lives this book and Melissa's storyline reflected the real society we live in today. I adored Lily on the other side from the beginning as reality caught up with her and felt sorry for all the trouble and drama she had to go through. Therefore I liked her finding herself again and getting back control of her life.

The ending with the flashback showed a more settle live for both girls and left me with hope for both of the girls' life. The most important lecture I got from this book which I think is especially important to remind the younger generations about is: Stay true to yourself and keep in touch with reality.

I was expecting the story to be all cheesy- teenage- problems stuff because of social media, and I was also expecting to hate the book. But after finishing the story it was interesting ( it took me long to read because working full time and always tired) it's told in two perspectives; Lily the youtuber who is famous thanks to social media platforms. Has everything a glamorous life that girls would kill for, make up range, a loyal boyfriend and a perfect life. Whereas Melissa watched Lily religiously and wants her life, and starts doing a vlog thanks to photoshop she creates a perfect life. But when those two girls hit rock bottom and the secrets are coming out; slut shaming, hateful comments, cyberbullying and the aftermath. I enjoyed it I can relate to these girls when I'm jealous and angry all the time because of the pressures of the social media creating a perfect life when it's all fake! 4.5 stars 🌟 🤩 ✨️ 😍 💛

Quick, easy read about the perils of social media. Kept me interested, although I did not especially connect with any of the characters, because I don't share their obsession with social media. I love my Instagram, and I have a blog, but I truly, honestly don't care about how many likes I get, and I don't even know off the top of my head how many followers I have. 100-ish? I guess I'm just old.

Despite being associated with blogging for quite a while now, I lacked an insight into the world of female lifestyle/beauty/fashion blogs. Obviously, this is a fictionalised narrative - and not exactly 'high brow' reading, nevertheless I found myself learning a few things, and immersed from start to end, finishing it in 2 days.

The way that story is told from two narratives helps to keep things interesting, and the way that one of the main characters evolves from a somewhat mercenary beauty blogger to women's rights activist is very gratifying.

This might be a good read for young, impressionable paid up members of the cult of social media celebrity - a cautionary tale, as it were.

The story is split into 2 narratives. That of a youtuber, and of a fan.

Melissa is more than a fan, she's absolutely obsessed. She's thinking about Lily during every single moment of her day. I found her to be a very cringey and an unlikable character. She acts like she's 12.

On the other hand I quite enjoyed reading about Lily. All her struggles of being a Youtuber.

Generally speaking though it's a very weak title. A bit too melodramatic for my taste.
The secret" part wasn't a surprise at all...
The final message is nice. However I don't feel like it connects well with the book itself.

It's possible that it's more targeted towards teens, who knew about facebook the moment they learned to speak. If that's the case then my rating is unfair, as I'm in my 20s.

This book has the most frustrating characters and cringiest plot I've ever known in man kind. Honestly, it really had some potential if only they could reduce the cringy romance and focused more on loving our body and the internet haters stuffs. In a nutshell, this whole book is a Wattpad story.

My Secret YouTube Life is a book of two halves. The first half is really good; sharp, engaging, and with an underlying sense that something sinister is going on. Unfortunately, the latter half of the book is a big hot mess, and left me really annoyed that all the interesting possibilities the first half raised were not done justice to.

To start with the things I did like: the dual narrative worked well. It's an odd choice to have a 23 year old as one of the narrators in the YA book, but because Lily's world is essentially rather teenage (the adult details of it are omitted) I think it works. Lily was sympathetic and her struggles to please her fans didn't come across as the whining they easily could have done. Melissa, the other narrator, is far less likable, and is pretty irredeemable - HOWEVER, I did enjoy reading her chapters, and felt a cringe factor as she dug herself into a deeper and deeper hole. She's shallow, perhaps acts younger than her 16 years and treats her friends really badly, but she did feel quite real. I really liked how in her desperation to be cool and popular she starts telling lies you just KNOW will bite her in the backside.

Unfortunately, the other characters are not as well-developed as Lily or Melissa, and this is I think where some of the problems start. Chris, for example - he's the love interest to Lily, the light to Bryan's dark, and yet I don't feel I got any insight into him as a character. It meant I struggled to support Lily when she kisses him (a huge incident, as it sparks the breakdown of her world) and I just felt she acted pretty pathetic and needy around him, even allowing for her fragile state. Had he been more of a person, and had I liked him and been willing him and Lily to get together, I think I'd have felt her pain more strongly. I get that Lily's tension isn't about Chris vs Bryan as such (which is good) but as Chris is so key in instigating the breakdown of that world, and that they're together at the end and I am supposed to feel joy at this, something more needed to be done. Perhaps Chris could have played a more active role in her life as a friend rather than them suddenly remeeting? I dunno.

I also found the side characters on Melissa's side of the story underdeveloped - such as best friend Suze. I didn't buy how easily she made up with Melissa, and the revelation that she's dating a girl had me groaning, because I have literally read three books in a row where this happens, and it feels like a lesbian character is just being chucked into a story to tick a box.

The biggest problem I had, though, is that the pacing after Melissa publishes the photo of Lily and Bryan is totally out. Everything is too rapid - the bullying of Lily, her retreat home, Melissa's world falling apart, her making up with Suze, Andy forgiving her (and not minding what she did to him at all?!) and then the subsequent bullying of Melissa, which is over in pages. So much interesting material not explored properly - argh! I rarely say this but MSYTL could have benefited from being slightly longer, and perhaps edged slightly into thriller territory to capitalise on the online nastiness.

It also felt in places to me like the writing could do with some work - quite a bit of the dialogue was a bit stilted and unreal sounding.

In summary: really interesting material, not really done justice.

Was haltet ihr vom Cover?

I requested this book because it looked fun but it actually was a lot deeper than that.

Lily of LilyLoves the famous Youtube channel seemingly has the perfect life. Sponsors, makeup lines inspired by her, a cute boyfriend and an amazing London flat, not to mention three million subscribers. But behind the camera, Lily is buckling under the pressure. There's launches and the constant content she has to produce - everyone is relying on her. Not to mention her boyfriend isn't actually the most supportive...and who's this girl who keeps sending him pictures and messages?

I love Lily. She's a great protagonist and I loved reading her journey. She deserved her happy ending after everything she'd been through. She was kind, genuine and I really felt for her. She works so hard at pleasing her fans an the companies that work with her, even though this means that she doesn't put her own self care first when she really needs to.

Unfortunately I can't say the same for Melissa. I enjoyed her chapters a lot less. I was already uneasy with what she was doing but then after what she did to Lily, I did not feel sorry for her at all. At the end she really needed to learn a few lessons.

I think this would be a wonderful book for young teens to see the pitfalls and dark truth behind social media and how easily someone's reputation can be damaged. Lily spent years building her brand and then it crumbled in a matter of days. People can easily turn on you, especially when they're hidden behind a computer screen. Cyber bullying and abuse can have such an effect on mental health and I love that this book is upfront about it.

It also shows the treatment that famous women receive in the media as Lily and Melissa experiences this brutally.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I hope that maybe it will make someone think about that what we say and do on the internet has consequences and that there are real people behind the screens.

Also I would like more Lily! I truly adored her character and I would love to see more of her.

—An interesting novel with a few exaggerations!—

Lily is a big YouTube star, and Melissa is probably her biggest fan. She posts fake blogs and pictures on her account to live up to Lily’s perfect life, which ultimately destroys her friendship with Suze. When she manages to take a photo of Lily and Chris—instead of her own boyfriend Bryan—everything changes. Lily starts a completely new life with new videos, and Melissa stops posting on any accounts.

The novel alternates between Lily and Melissa, allowing the reader to experience two completely different lives. Lily—the ultimate mega-star—and Melissa—the inconspicuous girl. The story is based on the real lives of teenagers. You experience all the thoughts and emotions of both girls, as well as the changes they go through over time. Since topics like cyberbullying are very current, the target audience is relatively broad.

In my opinion, the blurb greatly exaggerates the dramatic overlap of their lives. After all, they haven’t even spoken to each other; Melissa only took a photo at an unfortunate moment. I would have liked to see a stronger connection between the two protagonists. Nevertheless, I think the young adult novel, which is the author’s first book, is well done. The youth language and inner monologues were easy to understand. Also, the book shows how quickly hate comments can escalate and spiral out of control. This then affects the offline world and can no longer be removed from the internet.

While much of the mainstream media bickers over what the price of a cauliflower will be after Brexit, the attention of most young people is instead consumed by social media channels – on which they present their ideal selves to their friends and public. This is the space in which Seager's epoch-defining novel operates.

If it were written for adults, it would be serialised in the New Statesman, be made into an episode of Black Mirror, and described by the Guardian as "Orwellian... the most important thing since quinoa". Happily, My (Secret) YouTube life is instead aimed at the very audience who battle with the issues raised on a daily basis – teens. Instead of wading through magical-realist metaphors and font sizes that require a monocle to read, we get an addictive, fast-moving tale of two characters at the opposite end of the social-media popularity scale, learning the same life lessons through the vehicle of online-shaming.

There are break-ups, there are break-downs, there are parents that just don't understand. It's got all the makings of a teen classic. I highly recommend you treat yourself to a copy – £6.99 is a bargain. In a year's time you won't even be able to buy a cauliflower for that.

YouTubers/Instagrammers hold such sway with young girls now with their seemingly perfect lives and happy Mills and Boon like relationships but do we ever get to see the real story - the people behind the carefully constructed facade? Melissa, one of the dual main protagonists in this story, is almost obsessed by her favourite YouTube star, Lily, and wants to have a life just like hers. The only way to do this however is to bend the truth a little and create a different persona , neglecting her real friends at the same time. Lily has problems of her own and her perfect little world is about to implode.

This salutary tale should be in every secondary school library to give young people a dose of reality. The short chapters with the two switching narratives keep you interested and show you the two sides of the coin, reality versus acting a part. Will reading this stop kids idolising glossy online stars? No of course not but for some of them it should at least help them stop and think and enjoy the videos for what they are in many cases, a carefully thought out production, not real life.

Lily is a Youtube vlogger who goes by the name LilyLoves

However her life isnt perfect as she deals with her drunk boyfriend who's a wannabe rock star who treats her badly.

Then there's Issa, a follower of Lily whom wants her so called perfect life for herself, only to be forcing it to happen and it doesn't in the way she dreams as she uses others photo's on her blog to enhance her life to the online world to have startling friendship consequences for her.

When Lily and Issa see each other, a shocking actions sets the two spiralling and we witness their lives break and then to realise what truly matters in life and how they can grow and evolve from their shared experience.

It was a typical Youtube experience, believable and crazy from both girls perspectives. It deals with cyber bullying and online hate as well as tabloid news and how the media can spread lies and truths but blow them out of proportion. For a debut it shone through all the other YouTube fiction books I have read sounding more grown up in tone of language and relationship issues raised.
