It's hot demon chicks vs. angelic babes! Ian and his succubus Alaria make their way to a gleaming city on the sea where multiple dangers a goblin mob boss. An underworld of thugs. And roving packs of vicious demons. Most dangerous of Alaria's tendency to bed every hot chick she sees. Drama ensues and the couple's future is in question, when in walks the most beautiful angel Ian's ever laid eyes on. Literally. She has wings, a halo, the whole bit. Can a sex demoness and a holy roller learn to get along? Relationships. Sometimes they're heaven... sometimes they're hell. This is a story featuring naked women, threesomes, kinky sex, demons, warlocks, violence, revenge, and moral quandaries. If you’re an old granny lady who’s going to clutch your pearls every time a woman’s breasts are described or somebody gets naked, this book is not for you.
This is male aimed Litporn but the weird thing is it is better written than most of that actual LitRPG stories I've read! This instalment of the series was better than the second book but worse than the first. Some of the happenings are super cringe inducing but others are so bad they end up being funny. It is a weird mix but when it works it works and when it does not it is cringe inducing awful.
I nearly ditched this series after the disastrous second instalment and only gave this third book a go because I needed a book to listen to while I did a bunch of chores and I was feeling super indecisive and could not settle on a new read. Plus I had this handy as I bought it at the same time I bought the second one. I figured I'd ditch this after the few hours of my chores were up but by that point the story had sucked me back in which is a credit to Markam's storytelling and humour as his main character, Ian, is a complete ass most of the time!
The story in this one was a pretty even split between the Litporn and the LitRPG. Ian, being Ian, manages to upset Alaria to the point where she dumps him. In true Ian style he responds by going on a massive drunken bender and being a total asshole. He only scrapes himself out of the gutter after being threatened by the gangster who loaned him the cash to rebuild the Revenge in the last book that payments are due on his loan. He decides to go on a few dungeon raids to make the cash and drags along his usual companions as well as Meera, a sexy angel he rescued from demons.
In a fun development Ian also had to join with a team of human players for the dungeon adventures. It was fun to see him interacting with others humans as well as just the game AI's. Those moments plus the times we get glimpses into Ian's life in the real world always offer the story that little bit extra.
I'll probably give the fourth book a go at some point.
Rating: 3.5 stars.
Audio Note: This seems like it would be a super difficult book to narrate given some of the content but I think half the reason it ends up still being an enjoyable listen is due to the high quality of the narration. Iggy Toma's narration is excellent. The guy realy gets the tone and spirit of the story and makes a lot of it work. I'm sure this book could be 1 star stuff in the hands of a less talanted audio narrator. I was also amused to notice that Iggy Toma mostly narrates m/m romance outside of this series. Which is pretty funny considering this series is straight up male wishfulfilment fantasy and not at all female friendly!
When we left Ian & co the ship needed repairs. This is literally the whole book; grinding to pay for repairs. As a result the book grinds to a halt too. On the one hand taking a break from all the Scott Pilgraming is refreshing, on the other, we’re in for sad Faust. Here’s a hot take; maybe the demon is actually the bad gal here? It’s not vogue in modern fiction, I know. It’s just if I derailed conversations to get my way, then ignored my parter’s issue with my behavior, I might want to consider my role in breaking up. Especially if I’m doing nothing to contribute to a mutually incurred debt, and instead just want to fuck short people. Also it would’ve been a hell of a lot (pun intended) more interesting to find out that Alaira was a for reals demon and that explained why her programming was so “advanced,” and her memories, but no, you see the movie “Her,”? She’s just such an advanced program OMGeeeee! Hang on, my eyes just popped out from rolling so hard... nope more short people jokes, those eyeballs are going to roll for a minute.
And Stig yelling “Chill bitch!” Got old around the 11th time it was played for a joke. Sadly this goes on. And on. No I didn’t feel sad about Dorp either.
As far as Meera goes... Angels be dumb. Don’t lean too hard on that stereotype, it’s an antique! (For the record, any guy who demands a blow job before getting it himself deserves so much defenestration). The reader is also treated to the tamest kink this side of 50 shades, and yes everyone is still making a big deal out of anal. Because that NEVER EVER hurts without a LOT GODDAMN MORE PREP in fiction. I feel every time a book does this I need to release a PSA on anal which, I’m too fucking old at this point. Oh and how Meera is dumped is just so... damn. Also I’ve seen this particular form of love triangle in better manga and typing that alone makes me hate this book more. Alaira realizes she misses Ian, so angel is going to have to bounce. And keep bouncing.
How did checking the logs change? In a convenient way so that Ian can get a blowjob as a form of “griefing,” there’s work toward becoming a more self secure person, but I’m willing to bet he’ll loose it at another person challenging his manhood again. It’s Marty McFly’s chicken. Don’t worry, gamer stereotypes are alive and well, so if you’ve been skipping YouTube comments you might find something original. Oh and the RL girl is no fun. Shocking. I can’t imagine why after hanging out with the ogle crowd.
How was the sex overall? So tepid you could soak yeast. And considering how much of the book this was, I should by all counts remove another star. But I had nothing better to read at the time, so.. 2 stars.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
On the face of it, you have another simple sex-fueled LitRPG work that works pretty well.
However, look deeper (especially after reading it) and you’ll find something as rich and complex as jambalaya, with much of the same heat.
Firstly, the characters are complex, not cookie-cutter. They all - especially Ian - have weaknesses and issues, as well as strengths and compassion. Even little Stig shows further depth this time around. And there’s the next thing: these characters are changing. They grow and morph, they even reduce. Their behavior is incredibly valid, given the world and personalities they have. Even the sex and drama is reasonable. Elsewhere, fair portions of the story cover Ian’s personal lapses in judgement; in fact, the whole book being the premise of one. So overall the drama is also complex and real. Yes, the sex adds some flavor, but really the story is all about people and relationships. (With some good advice on both.) You want to see what happens next, and if things will work out.
Next, the technical aspects are all excellent: the writing, editing, tables, plot, magic, races, etc., are all exceptional. I don’t recall seeing any typos, and the story kept me invested. The RPG elements aren’t overdone, and tables and character sheets don’t fluff up the text. (Beware stories with a full character sheet every freaking chapter or more.) I also laughed a lot, for the base humor, character humor, inside jokes, and of course humor he many social references. All completely nerdy and correct.
Lastly, the story progresses the series, acting as a good growth point (in many different ways), and adds new friends, enemies, and plot threads to the existing structure.
So you get done with this book that you thought was going to be something much simpler, and you’re surprised and entertained. Pleasantly so, and your thinking, “Wow, that was pretty damn good.”
And you’re right. Recommended (for mature audiences)
The first two books in the series were good fun reads. This book however? What the heck did I pay for and waste time reading? Show of hands if you read this genre of books because you enjoy reading about the personality conflicts of an immature sissy man-baby beta MC? That is not the reason why I read this genre of books. I want something fun to read with plenty of action. Not slog through a book about some immature beta who always asks “are you sure?”, as if 3 books in and plenty of action later he is still some virgin who isn’t sure the girl asking him to do something really means it. Ugh...sucks I bought book 4&5 because after this book, the author poisoned the MC for me and all I can think of now is I am reading the misadventures of a beta MC. FML!
I am almost embarrassed to admitting to reading this series my friends on Goodreads probably think I'm a pervert..yes there's lots of sex and dirty jokes but it's funny. The main character is a bit of a dumb ass but he is a endearing dumb ass. This installment of the series is a bit disappointing I think a series named Succubus should have the Succubus in it.
Now, after book 3, I'm sure this is one of the best representatives of the genre. It's amazing how it manages to crack jokes all the time, and yet, make you take the characters and plot somewhat... seriously? And eagerly anticipating what happens next. It's a seriously good book, that's for sure.
I was really looking forward to this installment of the Succubus series, which is a sex comedy version of World of Warcraft. Here, our protagonist is upset with his succubus girlfriend sleeping around and tries to have her code tweaked. This is an evil awful thing to do to a person, especially one who has been enslaved before and she justly dumps him. He then becomes a disgusting drunk, gets involved in a kinky relationship with an angel, and tries to grind money to pay off his debts to a loan shark.
Honestly, Ian's behavior in this book is disgusting and in an all too realistic sort of way. He treats his angel girlfriend like garbage and thinks it's better that he's thinking of his ex while sleeping with her. Frankly, it emerges on the emotionally abusive (A.I. or not). I really think the author missed the mark as if he's doing a free-love future, having a poly relationship would have been better. It doesn't help that Meera is a character who should have joined the team and is more likable than Alaria.
Got me! Saw the cover while browsing, saw the title, figured, what the shell, might be fun. Figured with succubus in the title there would be some sexual innuendo, maybe a lightly described sex seen Holy shit! Surprise! VERY DESCRIPTIVE! And yet well done, and not just the sex seens. The story line was good, the characters came alive, the dungeon...holy Guild Wars!! It was a Great read! Can't wait to check out the rest!!
These are turning out to be quite a bit better than I expected. I was worried as Ian turned into another sexist, chauvinistic ass, and was wondering if this was going to be the last one I read.
But he gets better, and I liked the character development of both him and Alara. I'll stick around for at least another book.
Tragedy & Redemption, Along with Good Dungeon Crawl Act 1: Ian screws up and blackmails a programmer into changing Alaria in a fundamental way, to assure her monogamy. Unfortunately it doesn’t work and starts to drive her crazy as she looses her sense of self. Ian has the programmers back out the change and she recovers, but the damage is done. Quickly enough Ian admits to interceding with “the gods” to change her, but despite his apologies and realization that this was fundamentally wrong, she kicks him right off of the ship, and leaves port, promising that they relationship is over. Stig and xxx come with him.
Act 2: Ian falls into lower and lower levels of self-pity and drunkenness. Along the way, he treats Dorp so cruelly, turning him from a loyal follower into a hater, driving him away. Eventually Ian is dead broke, and when things could get no worse, his inner heroism is invoked by chance circumstance, and he is befriended by a literal angel.
Act 3: Ian and the Angel, Meera, develop a relationship. Relatively deep exploration of how limits, imagined and real, can add excitement to a relationship when boundaries are crossed. Of course, Meera falls in love with Ian, but Ian is still in love with Alaria, despite it being over. Meanwhile, Ian realizes he is in deep debt with the mob and its getting deeper. He needs to start dungeon crawling like crazy to start paying the loan back, but with usurious interest he's having a hard time making any progress. One great dungeon crawl, played through several times with different parties and personalities, wiht vastly different outcomes.
Act 4: Alaria is back. She has such a big heart she's decided to forgive Ian, and can even see why he's been fooling around with an angel. And she knows how to really exploit a sub. Intense roleplaying and boundary exploration ensues. Finally they have to say good bye, and Alaria helps Ian realize he can't win trying to pay off the debt, so maybe its time to skip town.
While I absolutely adore this series, and I still enjoyed reading this book, Succubus 3 is probably the weakest entry thus far. Without spoiling the reasons why, the titular sex demoness is absent from the majority of this book, leaving the story without its most interesting and witty character during the main narrative arc. The MC is essentially heartbroken over this, and while his dramatic shift in behavior is somewhat relatable it's also extremely difficult to read at times, bordering on painful. Despite all this, there are some upsides to the shift in direction including the expansion of some of the characterization of a few other characters (like Stig the imp, who gets quite a bit more depth than we had previously). We also meet a new focus for the erotica side of the story in Meera, who while being a fantastic character in her own right is a poor replacement for our beloved Alaria. While the book reaches a resolution that allows the series to keep rolling along, the fact that the MC straight up mistreats Meera so wantonly at times really makes that ending a bit harder to swallow as well.
While I enjoy the series, setting and characters enjoy to forgive this book for its mistakes and enjoy it, I'd definitely say that this one is by far the weakest entry. While some of the main plot points introduced have a degree of permanence to the narrative going forward, most of what happens in this book is fairly non-integral to the plot going forward. Still enjoyable overall, but much less so for fans of the series (and Alaria in particular).
You might think a higher order being of lust and sex would have immeasurable sexual intelligence. Normally, you’d be right. However, this is a book by a mortal author. Here we have a boy, and not a man, but a boy, experiencing his first love. Somehow, he’s convinced to push his own boundaries aside and relinquish the right of his human male instinct; specifically the instinct of paternal certainty. Logically, rationally, he knows that his relationship is not one of sex in the sense of reproduction, but emotionally and by human nature he retains his animal instinct none the less. Then after consenting to the unexplained needs of an immortal, she immediately takes the boundary to its maximum limit without communication or consent. He reacts badly, so badly in fact that a reconciliation was not warranted. At the same time, the author could have addressed the issue better. I doubt, honestly, the author has ever engaged in polyamory. I expected at least an understanding of human instinct. All they needed was communication and easing, for example, if she had warned him each time a new partner was introduced. If the author wanted to teach a lesson, moral or otherwise, they should at least have a basis.
Third book in the series and from the outset I wondered if the author might struggle to keep this series moving forward, especially as book 2 was pretty awesome. The good news - AJ Markam has delivered another great story whilst keeping in everything that makes this series so great. Plus we get to meet Meera and trust me, you will want to meet her.
Alaria, Meera, Stig, there are some great characters in this series.
Yes the dungeon grinding gets a bit repetitive and takes up a reasonable chunk of the book, overall it severed its purpose in the storyline so I'm cool with it.
Whilst I initially didn't like the contemporary cultural references in the books, even those have grown on me. Although having said that; my life was perfectly fine without knowing about the "two girls and one cup" reference. I did foolishly search up the term. 😲
Great Writing of characters with inner & outer conflicts that push them through their their own heroic stories. All would probably enjoy this novel if they gave it a chance. However, readers of the second book may make the mistake of thinking the protagonist’s inner conflict is being recycled.
It is very annoying when that happens, & some writers seem to do it a lot. It ‘shows’ the reader that the previous book of the series, was a waste of time.
For Gravity being shared by you, grateful am I. May the Goddess be asked to alighten a path towards love, joy, & happiness along the self-determined life-cycle chosen by the higher-self of yours by you, pray do I.
World: The world building is basic and falls into LitRPG tropes, nothing of note here.
Story: Continues the story of the last two books but wow with each progressive book this book goes down to it’s lowest common demonitor and is pretty much male wish fulfilment. Grant, that was a big part of the first book but there was actually some nice humour and discussion on slavary for this type of book. Here, we still get it but not much.
Characters: Ian is okay, he’s a archetype and so are all the characters. All of them fall into the norm of the genre.
“The Path of Excess leads to the Palace of Wisdom” ... sort of ...
I like that a book this tacky has the guts to be so insightful. Anything from which you can learn is worth a little discomfort. I’m not saying it’s To Kill a Mockingbird, but it does hit on some good notes through some crazy events. Plus, the LitRPG genre is starting to grow on me (being a bit of a gamer myself). Personally, I’d love to see this series on screen (maybe on the Playboy Channel or a XXX-rated series if a studio had the guts to put some real money and effort into it). Eagerly moving on to book # 4.
I have enjoyed this series more than I thought I would. If the idea of angels and demons and lots of sex bothers you, this is definitely a series to skip. But if you're up to it, there is an interesting fantasy world being fleshed out. Ian and Alaria continue on their quest for revenge against her former masters. They hit a sizeable speed bump, but the story doesn't stop there. I eagerly await volume 4
I got to admit I'm enjoying this series,it's based in the Ethernet, so anything can happen and does. What I really like is the constant stream of humor that runs through the story. The sex is a bit overdone ,but since it involves all kinds of other worldly creatures that are mainly female, its quite quirky. I haven't read #4yet but am looking forward to what A.J. pulls in from not only left field, but from every part of the ballpark including the locker room.
Yes, a lot of the book is porn. Unabashedly so. But, the view into the RPG world is fascinating. I'm in my 70's; been using computers since the early 1980's really got into combat simulation games (Aces of the Pacific, IL-2, and Red Baron), but was never interested in RPG games. So, the whole world of RPG - the psychologies, the social interactions, etc., are alien -- but interesting. Plus, the characters are charming, and the author writes a funny, quirky story.
Well the author has pulled another rabbit out of the hat! Ian our Hero showed himself to be a bit of a tool at the start that i wanred to put the book down and not come back but the author spun a clever tale to bring him back round and me to carry on reading! Some very funny scenes that i wont spoil!
I feel as though the main character pulled a 180 in this book. I found myself skimming through parts of the book, the sex scenes were a little stale to me. There were also two new characters introduced that would have made interesting additions to the main character's party but by the end of the story were thrown to the side.
To be honest I didn't know what to make of this book at first I thought it was poorly with them I thought the story was all over the place but something kept enticing me to read further and I've got to say I did really enjoy the outcome and I'm actually looking forward to the next book in the series
If not for the angel woman I would have give it a 2. He was a selfpittying drunken dick though most of the book with no character growth but I would still say read it for the Angel woman. Any character growth that could have happened already happened last book. Angel made the book might reread it for her.
This was a little too much RPG for me. When the main character is slogging along running through a dungeon day after day to make money the book just slogged along too. Way too much like watching someone play WOW.
This one was ok but the majority of the book we spent really disliking the whiny main character. There is a glimmer of hope he may actually accept the nature of his succubus girlfriend but his never ending insecurities while in the game world are really annoying.
3.5 to 4 stars, I like this one a lot more than the second book and almost equal to the first book. Had some minor issues with it but all in all if you liked the first book you should like this one. Again this book contains adult writing and is not suitable for everyone.
Went from one to three none stop.Wanted to continue the story so bad I didn't stop to review the first two.For that I'm very sorry because they we awesome.I'm off to continue the series in book 4. Join me ,start at the first and don't stop
Very much enjoyed this little tale, like how the characters developed over all three installments. Please write more, when does, Succubus 4-17 come out?
