Kindle Unlimited, these books {Captivating History} Maya Civilization: A Captivating Guide to Maya History and Maya Mythology (Mayan Civilization, Aztecs and Incas Book 1) Aztec: A Captivating Guide to Aztec History and the Triple Alliance of Tenochtitlan, Tetzcoco, and Tlacopan (Mayan Civilization, Aztecs and Incas Book 2) were definitely interesting, in some ways more than the War related ones, after all grew up hearing about those in various ways, this is more of the things they did post-it notes on in high school etc.

Es el primer libro de esta editorial (Captivating History) que tengo oportunidad de leer/escuchar (fue en versión audiolibro) y me gustó.
Es una guía pequeña sobre el tema, pero me pareció muy bien desarrollado. Una especie de monográfico bien equilibrado que cubrió satisfactoriamente todos los temas que puede buscar quien se interese en tener un primer acercamiento al tema de esta civilización mesoamericana.
Eso sí, al tratar de convertir este texto en una especie de "guía amigable" creo que mostraron demasiada ingenuidad. En particular, al ser parte de esa descendencia de españoles e indigenas los mexicanos estamos acostumbrados a la cocina mexicana que mucho debe de los platillos mexícas. Y la verdad, algunos de los platillos que presentan en el libro como ejemplo de la cocina azteca, dejan mucho que desear. Pero, bueno, hasta al mejor guerrero jaguar se le mella la hoja de obsidiana.
Por lo demás, fue una lectura agradable.
Eso sí, como toda obra apegada a la verdad histórica, no será muy del agrado de los que se empeñan a mostrar a los españoles como los malos y a los mexicas como las inocentes victimas de la conquista.
El imperio azteca era brillante en su urbanismo, pero verdaderos genocidas en sus costumbres rituales. Si Hernan Cortes triunfó fue gracias a que las demás poblaciones indígenas vieron en los occidentales la oportunidad de una alianza que los liberara de una civilización opresora y cruel. La Conquista de México fue un acto de rebelión indígena. Le duela a quien le duela, aunque argumente que "tiene otros datos..."

The book points out that one advantage we have in learning about Aztec history is the plethora of documents and relics from that time.
The book describes aspects of Aztec culture including city states, the Spanish invasion and downfall of Aztec civilization, the terrible use of some much human sacrifice and their use of taxes and tributes.
A very good point of the book is that it describes the daily life of an Aztec. The book goes into the stratification of Aztec culture with the rulers, nobles and commoners. Gender roles of commoners is covered such as the requirement of military service for only males. It points out that there was some upward mobility for commoners.
One thing really surprising was that the marriage age for twelve years old.
Slavery is covered along with the Aztec religion with its multitude of gods and goddesses. Specific gods and goddesses are discussed and why human sacrifice was so important to their religion. Even Aztec sports are covered.
In addition to all of this there is a bibliography.
An excellent, readable history of the Aztecs.

A Walk Through
Not only will you get a basic history of the Aztec, including the legends and known history. However, a few oddities in the writing, including the tour of the ancient Aztec capital and used stories and projection to get you into the experience. Depending on your preferred style, you might find this either interesting or annoying. Regardless, it covers a lot of ground at a top level and provides a typical Captivating History type intro to the Aztec.

Book is problematic. "Ahau" is not an Mexica name for ruler. It is a Maya word. Roasted avocado? I don't think so. Most of this guys sources are web links. I would warn even the most casual reader to invest more time and effort in a worthwhile history, such as David Carrasco's A Very Short Introduction to the Aztecs from Oxford University Press.

Other than the name of one king and the human sacrifice I knew little of the Aztec culture. This was a good short introduction to the topic.
