What happens when the incubus king meets his faery prince?

After two years of civil war, Tarquin has taken back his throne. Now his task is to rebuild the city of Arubio and the shattered lives of the citizens. Marriage is the last thing on his mind, but that doesn’t stop his uncle, the Emperor of Rus, from selecting his betrothed anyway: Viridian, the heir to the throne of the fey nation of Fiddach.

As the reluctant Tarquin begins to warm to Viridian, it becomes apparent not everyone is ready to celebrate the coronation of a new king in Arubio. Someone—or something—is plotting against Tarquin. It seems as though he and Viridian have become pawns in a much larger game between the incubi, fey, and dragons.

The stakes are high, but can the promise of Viridian’s heart convince Tarquin to play?

I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

First and foremost, this is a slow burn. You aren't reading this novel for action, though there are some great action scenes. Second, this style of writing, I love it. It is a beautiful story and the romance is fun. What I love most, the character evolution of Viridian as they explore themself and come to understand themself. These characters are all flawed in different ways and yet so captivating. I'm normally a very, very slow reader, but I read this in very few days as I wanted to know where it went! Definitely one of my must reads of the year.

What a unique and wonderful read! Pickett crafts an exceptional world and gives us a strong, but flawed, main character in Tarquin, head of the city of Arubio. After two years of civil war, Tarquin strives to rebuild his city and solidify his place as leader. He is shocked, however, when his interfering uncle sends him a faery prince for him to marry - Viridian, the heir to the throne of the fey nation of Fiddach. As the two get to know each other, it becomes clear that not all is well in the city of Arubio and forces are plotting against Tarquin. With well-developed and thought out characters, Pickett takes us on a wild - and sometimes painful - journey that you don't want to miss. This book does have a dark edge to it and deals with heavy themes, but this is an excellent read for any fantasy fan.
