I’m not sure if this book is aimed toward Middle Grade or Young Adult audience. I am rating as Middle Grade as the writing is quite simple. The only scene that may be questionable for very young readers was Princess Margaret rolling naked on a bed covered in jewels, which was written more in humour than erotic.

This book has everything you would ask for in a Medieval Fantasy story. Feuding Kings, an evil Princess, a young maiden held prisoner in a dungeon, wizards, heroes and a long held curse.

I loved the world building but I felt the story could have been more fleshed out. The character development was well portrayed for such a short story.
Leon Jane has included plenty of danger interspersed with humour to break the tension.

Shadow Valley is an atmospheric page-turner with plenty of unexpected twists and a happy ending.
The only thing that ruined my reading experience was the number of errors in my ecopy. The book could do with a thorough proof read.

This was a really nice medieval story, very much a Fairytale. It was full of intricate details and vivid scenes that made it easy to visualize the beauty, the ugliness and decadence, and all the different places. It had interesting characters, some sinister (but not the one’s you would guess) and I love dear Samuel - a black cat just crossed your path. I was guessing at what would happen but amongst an element of predictability this turned out to be quiet unpredictable! This story is almost complete but there is still an unanswered question. What happens next amongst the shadows? Shadow Valley is a book great for any age group. A super fun and quick read!

By the numbers, a treatment, not a full story

I strongly considered giving this book two stars, but I liked Samuel enough to bump it up to 2.5 stars. The rules of decimals required me to bump up the final review. This book hits many classic tropes. It doesn't deviate, so the ending is forecasted well before the halfway point. It went along to quickly. Since the story is already short, it could have benefited from more character development. Instead the good guys stay virtuous and villains cackle menacingly throughout. It would be best served as a middle grade book for children. I think that audience would enjoy this story.
