There is not enough western space opera in this world. It is an odd mash-up, but it works so well. Firefly, and by extension the movie Serenity caused a cultural sensation and one of the most gigantic disappointments in nerdom. After one season, Firefly was summarily canceled and the nerd community at large gasped their shock. Firefly, though only one season and excellent movie, has lived on in the hearts of millions of fans the world over.

This is why this book was so much fun for a die-hard Firefly lover like myself. It is an excellent continuation of a story that needs to be told. Some of this was new material for me, other’s I have read before. Now it is all joined together in a perfectly tidy package. All three plot lines are very good, although watch out for “The Warrior of the Wind.” That is a tear jerker. The art is fantastic, typical Whedon style. The art is a continuation of the TV show aesthetic. Which is completely welcome in my book.

If you are unfamiliar with Firefly and Serenity, it pays to go back and watch some of the shows beforehand. Starting this book from scratch is fine, but you will miss many of the subtle nuisances from the story. If you know all about the story, this is a must-read.

Where the purpose of the first Legacy Book was to provide some closure to the show and give reasoning behind characters' actions, taking place between the end of Firefly and the Serenity movie, the second Legacy Book moves us forward a little, taking place after Serenity. That's the one big difference, imo. Otherwise, this volume is yet another great continuation of a series that was cut way too short. I didn't love the illustrations in this one as much as the ones in Those Left Behind and Better Days, but the story and dialogue are still spot-on with what the show gave us.

Really enjoyed diving back into this world. It's great to get some continuation of the characters from Firefly and Serenity. This book dives into that more than the first as Legacy Book 1 was set before, during and after the tv show, and movie. Legacy 2 was all new content.

Any fan should pick this up for sure. If you know nothing about this universe this book would be a challenge for sure as it doesn't really stand on it's own.

Hoping a 3rd edition is on it's way as this book ends on a bit of a "what's next moment"

I still miss the Firefly Verse, and this was a great visit. I particularly enjoyed River's short story about Wash and Zoe. The dialogue is on point and it is easy to hear the character's voices as you read. The art is good.

Another fun collection of stories, this one all focusing on the crew post-Serenity. The first story, "Leaves on the Wind," is by far the best; I really liked it's development of Zoe and River, in particular. The other long story opened up the prospect of the Serenity crew leading a new war against the alliance, and I'm not on board for that at all--the Captain Mal we know and love never really fit as a soldier, and if they seriously moved in that direction, it would involve a significant change in character. But for now, though, this was fun.

Copying from my review about Book One... It all applies again, with the exception of a few stories that had a different drawing style which broke the magic for me, but still conveyed a compelling adventure arc.

I have obviously been obsessed with the franchise ever since my cousin introduced me to it. I was reluctant to watch any other episode after the first... But when I picked it up again, oh my, it went quickly. Rather early I realised that there was only one season of Firefly, so I had to find out why.

I am so glad they tried to give a farewell to a great show with a film and a few beautifully engaging comic books. This book is a collection of a few stories which expand the world of the annoying protagonists in a captivating and humorous way. The drawing style, in most parts, is fitting and clings to the true faces of the actors, which I find an important detail.

In general, the criticism against Firefly Comicbooks is that they are too exclusive. If you never watched the show, it might be a bit confusing. But nobody reads Harry Potter from the 5th book as well. The short miracle that Firefly was needs to be experienced from the show to the film to the books. Then you would really love it!

After the movie, fans of Firefly wanted to find out what happened next and the comics were declared canon, so that seemed like a good bet. Yet, Serenity/Firefly comics had given us two mini-series set between the TV show and the movie and a graphic novel providing backstory on the Shepherd and a few free comic book day one-shots all (except for one one-shot) set before the movie.

However, with this book, we finally catch up to the crew of Serenity, as we get two six-issue miniseries and a one-shot.

Leaves on the Wind: As the first mini-series ends Zoe's expecting, a new resistance movement is looking for Mal and the crew, and Jayne has gone home. They take Zoe to a hospital to deliver and the alliance captures her, and they have to figure out how to get her back. Leaves on the Wind is just perfect. It's a worthy continuation from the movie with great art, and perfect dialogue. Jubal Early and the Operative both appear and neither appearance feels like a gimmicky fan service idea, but rather they work well in line with the entire narrative.

The Warrior and the Wind: A short story where River is babysitting Zoe's baby and tells her a story, a fairy tale about the crew of Serenity and her dad in particular. It's a beautiful, very emotional story for its short length.

No Power in the Verse: In the second mini-series, times are getting even harder for the crew of Serenity and the jobs they can get even less profitable, they come to the rescue of a friend they met in the previous mini-series and find themselves caught between a ruthless rebel leader and a dangerous new force from the alliance that has designs on River. This is not quite as good as the first story, but its still solid, with a lot of interesting twists. Some character relationships are frayed and several characters shift in significant ways (including Mal) but I think the change is realistic.

Overall, this book was just superb and left me hungry for more. I hope Boom Studios eventually follows up on the foundation laid here, because this shows there are still a lot of great Firefly stories be told even if they can't be told on screen.

This is basically what I wanted: the continuation of Firefly! Revisiting the old cast and seeing them interact with new characters in an expanded universe... the sometimes unflattering drawing style aside.

Netrvalo to snad ani čtvrt roku, a Boom Studios - mladé komiksové vydavatelství spadající přímo pod Fox - uvedlo druhý svazek souborného vydání komiksových příběhů Firefly/Serenity publikovaných původně v Dark Horse.

Druhý svazek obsahuje šestidílné příběhy "Leaves on the Wind" a "No Power in the 'Verse", doplněné o unikátní pohádkově pojatý kraťas "The Warrior and the Wind". Zasvěceným netřeba dodávat, že všechny tři komiksy připravené pod oficiálním dohledem Josse Whedona se odehrávají až po filmu Serenity; jedná se tedy o plně kanonické pokračování příběhů naší oblíbené posádky.
Scenář si opět drží velmi vysokou kvalitu, což platí zejména v případě "Leaves on the Wind" z pera Zacka Whedona, ale i kouzelného "The Warrior and the Wind" Chrise Robersona. Oproti tomu "No Power in the 'Verse" působí spíše průměrným dojmem, tento příběh ovšem zachraňuje strhující finále spolu s jedním šokujícím (zároveň ale logickým) odhalením týkajícím se jedné z postav. "No Power in the 'Verse" zatím kontinuitu Firefly/Serenity uzavírá, vysloveně si však říká o pokračování, a nezbývá tedy než doufat, že na něj časem Boom Studios navážou.

Sběratele potěší, že kromě samotných komiksů jsou zde opět zahrnuty bonusy v podobě galerie alternativních obálek (jsou téměř všechny; zaznamenal jsem, že chybí obálka "The Warrior and the Wind" a jedna z alternativních obálek "Leaves on the Wind", bývalo by mě potěšilo také zahrnutí původní, tiskem nikdy nepublikované verze "beatlesovské" obálky, jejich nepřítomnost je však jen velice drobnou vadou na kráse).

Na závěr můžeme konstatovat, že Dark Horse dokázal celou dobu držet laťku komiksů Firefly/Serenity hodně vysoko (možná i díky opatrnému, poměrně pomalému rozhojňování univerza). Tyhle dva svazky jsou co do kvality i kanoničnosti ideálním lékem na "absťák" způsobený již více než třináctiletou absencí nových filmových či seriálových příběhů Firefly.

This collection of stories in graphic novel form is set after the movie Serenity. There are three parts; Leaves on the Wind, The Warrior and the Wind, and No Power in the Verse.
First, a word about the art. The comic stylings are OK to rather good and because of traditional clothes, you can identify the characters pretty easily. The covers, on the other hand range from very good to spectacular. The colors and imagery are apt and almost more emotional than some parts of the stories.
Leaves on the Wind tells the story of the aftermath of the release of information about Miranda. Mal has become almost a folk hero and is being hunted by the Alliance and those who want him to lead a rebellion against them. The relationships and story are compelling, but I wonder if more time could have been paid to the political build-up of the first few pages by using it later in the action. The end of the story has a couple holes, but is still complete and makes sense with the story.
The Warrior and the Wind is a fanciful retelling of the story of Zoe and Wash to their by River. This one tugs at the heartstrings more than a little and the art is cartoonish and fun.
No Power in the Verse is the most mediocre of the group. The characters act in mostly (though not entirely) true to character ways. Some old enemies come back to haunt them, and some previously secret history is revealed. Honestly, I feel like the changing of Inara's story was my least favorite part, but really the whole thing read like it was prepping for another trilogy.
Overall, if you enjoyed the TV show and the movie, you'll love these additions.

Eh. Two overly long rescue arcs split evenly by a charming intermission--Storytime with River!--that reaches the high water mark for this volume.

Artwork for the arcs didn't do it for me; the heads seemed too big and the faces maybe nailed the likenesses of the Firefly cast half the time, with the remainder of the time spent in the uncanny valley. On the other hand, River's bedtime story to Emma, "The Warrior and the Wind", has a wonderful comic strip style.

More so than its predecessor, Legacy Edition book 2 picks up the timeline after the events of the movie and the fantastic "Shepherd's Tale" of the first volume. In the first arc, "Leaves on the Wind", Times are hard for our big damn heroes. Zoë has her baby, but is captured by the Alliance. Mal gets the gang back together (what's left) for the rescue. As usual, complications ensue, but they're predictable, and really didn't need six issues to resolve.

The second story arc, "No Power in the 'Verse", proceeds much like the first, but turns darker. The Serenity crew gets caught up with the Peacekeepers as they try to rescue newfound friend Bea (from first arc), and then River, and then River's sisters... Well, there's a whole lotta rescuin' to be done. Maybe too much.

The second arc left a bad taste in my mouth. With Book and Wash gone, it would seem the crew has no compass or core, and the already fragile bonds holding them together risk snapping. Mal in particular ends up in a dark place. He's certainly not the Mal we knew before.

Three and a half stars, rounding down for gratuitous replay of Wash's scene in Serenity that shall not be named.

This is probably the stronger of the two collections (though I enjoyed both), in that it felt less like connective tissue between season 1 and the movie, and more like if the show had continued beyond the movie.

-"Leaves on the Wind" is the best story in either collection, in terms of what could have been an awesome episode of television. I don't want to spoil it for you.

-"The Warrior and the Wind" is essentially River telling a bedtime story to Zoe's baby. This was my favourite story overall, and was poetic, beautiful, and emotional. It made me appreciate River more. What sets this story apart from the rest of the comics is that it doesn't feel like an abbreviated episode of the TV show. It works perfectly in graphic novel form!

-"No Power in the 'Verse" isn't bad, but probably needed to be a season-long arc to work.

To quote my review from the first collection (because it applies to this one as well):

My advice to anyone picking these stories up is to be grateful that the creators of the show took the time, and cared enough about the people in these stories to bring them back to life in a way that stays true their essence. Obviously there are some limitations to the media this was in, but considering the circumstances, I feel that they did a great job.

Unlike the first collection of Firefly titles, this book really tries to move the story of Serenity and its passengers forward. Yes that means several of the main characters of the series are absent (aside from memories), but it also means that new characters are introduces. While neither Bea nor Iris really make themselves distinctive, I appreciate that the series use them more than once, and let much of the stories revolve around them.
There's still a weakness in that there are too many sides factoring into the stories, making it hard to keep track of who is with whom, and where each of the separate groups is acting (one noticeable thing about these series - the crew spends most of their time separated, which is a little odd). But that's a minor complaint, and I really appreciate the new ideas the series bring, even if the plots themselves are a little weak. Art is serviceable, although some of the female characters end up looking a little more interchangeable than they should. Still, good enough for Firefly fans to appreciate.

Legacy Edition Book Two takes place after the movie Serenity. I won't add any spoilers other than to say that if you haven't watched Firefly (t.v. series) and Serenity (subsequent movie) you would have absolutely no idea what was going on, so don't just pick up this book and start reading it if you are not already familiar with the background. That said, the plot is terrific and the dialogue and characters' behavior are true to the show. On the downside, although I'm not super-familiar with how comic book art is supposed to work, I did find it hard sometimes to visually identify the characters, especially the ones (like the Doc) who don't have distinctive speech patterns. It can be a bit frustrating to have to slow down and struggle to figure out who is talking (or punching, or whatever). However, you will figure it out eventually, and this book is definitely worth reading - it's exciting and fun and does stay true to the show, so that you feel like you're back there in the Firefly universe. Looking forward to Book Three!

I still wish the showed could've had more episodes. It would have been great to see where they could take the story of the crew. At least we have these graphic novel volumes and the comics! I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the characters, and getting introduced to new ones. The artwork between the chapters were wonderfully done and I liked that there was variety in the illustrations. The cover gallery is also so beautiful! I highly recommend this to anyone who's a Firefly fan or a fan of sci-fi cowboy stories.

This collection is decidedly improved from the first. Here, we get a much larger arc about the Alliance and the program that created River. It’s cohesive and enjoyable, although it hardly ends - just barely gets started, really.

The first several chapter arc is Leaves in the Wind. River really shines here, and so do some old baddies come back to try to mess with Mal and his.

Then comes a heartbreakingly adorable comic called The Warrior and The Wind. It was my favorite in this whole book. River tells a fairytale to Emma starring her parents: Zoe and Wash.

Then the rest of the collection is the No Power in the ‘Verse story arc that really gets plots and conflicts and bigger arcs going, but then ends with lots of unfinished business.

I’d say skip the first edition and read just this one - if you’re strapped for cash or time.

A great follow-up to the Serenity movie. I loved the "Leaves on the Wind" Saga. I was a little less impressed with the "No Power In the Verse" section just because it seemed to move away from some of the central characters known tendencies.

I'm not quite sure they earned the changes in motivation that they gave Mal. And Zoe turned on a dime near the end, which felt a little odd, but understandable.

You get to see a lot of people that you might have missed. The Operative makes a solid appearance and is handled with the respect due the character. Jubal Early is classically Jubal and I'm sure there is more to come.

I enjoyed all of these, with relatively minor notes, and I look forward to reading whatever comes next for the Firefly saga.

We're still flying.

I consider this a step up from book one. There is a deeper dive into the lore and consequences of a post-serenity world so fans of the show will be pleased.
All the issues I had with book one - volumes too short, conflicts too surface-deep - were addressed and then some. The volumes are longer, the tension is rich. It is all great.
Not being a comic book connoisseur, I can't offer much nuance on all things visual. I will say that I preferred some of the artistic styles in book one.
The only reason I cannot give this book full marks is that while the overall plot ending was satisfying, certain character arcs just fizzled for me. An impressive story for any fans out there and I'm sure some people won't share the same complaints that I have.

Overall I'd say volume two is slightly better than volume one, possibly because the whole thing is comprised of fewer storylines that fit together chronologically. Volume two finally gives us a continuation of what happens after Serenity, some new characters, plus a touch more backstory on Inara. The art was mostly very good though the likenesses did slip at times and some panels were overly sketchy. I have a few nitpicky little issues with the stories, but nothing that would keep me from recommending this book.

I really enjoy these characters. Any opportunity to spend more time with them is one I'm going to take. I think this volume felt true to the story and the characters. I like some of the things they set up in the last story and would definitely like to read more at some point. That said...I have to say these weren't the most compelling stories I've ever read. I was able to put it down for a few days and didnt feel a NEED to pick it back up again and continue. As much as I enjoyed it when i read it...it did not have a page turning, compelling story. But it was still entertaining and fun.

More fun adventures with the Serenity crew! Zoe is pregnant but Wash isn't around anymore to help her through it. After giving birth to her baby girl, Zoe is arrested and sent to a prison colony in a desert planet. Naturally, Mal and the gang rescue her. River tells little Emma the story of her parents and the Serenity family coming together as a fairy tale. But, before long, River's past comes back to haunt her as she meets others who went through the same "conditioning" by the Alliance. I'm looking forward to the next volume since this story ends with Mal swearing to take down the Alliance.

This is Boom Studios! re-releasing the Dark Horse graphic novels and one shots now that they have the rights under a new contract. So they contents are excellent just like before, however the cover art is rather aweful, the beige/yellow/brown color palette is bleh, and they have decided on no page numbers for some reason. I love me some Firefly but I'd recommend you get the originals from Dark Horse instead.

I like this edition of the Firefly comics much more than the last. I feel it captured the characters a lot better, and it was really great seeing what kind of things the crew got up to after the events in the movie. I particularly enjoyed seeing how River has become a much more collected version of herself while Zoe, in juxtaposition, has become a lot more erratic when it comes to protecting her baby.

The continuation to the acclaimed Firefly TV show. Book two starts up right after Serenity (the movie) and continues the adventures of the crew. I'm not a big comic reader, but imagining every conversation using the cast's voices really makes this come alive. It really does feel like I'm watching the show except for the sightly adjusted faces of the art (for licensing reasons, no doubt).

This is a graphic novel with three stories of differing length. The timeline for this is mostly several months after the TV movie.

The stories seem to fit together well compared to Book 1 which I thought was disjointed. Also, since the stories are longer, it gives a chance for deeper story-telling.

The story’s definitely better for this vol so far, I appreciate the continuation of the story line—but I found the art left a lot to be desired, especially when it comes to faces. That’s just my personal taste of course.

I felt bad for River at the end though!

I’ll be picking up more to find out what happens.~

These were all new stories for me, I had somehow missed the comics coming out. And the stories were fantastic. Some things that I wouldn't have expected, but the world continues to be rich and the characters that are so great remain true to what I would expect them to be. Highly enjoyed this.
