What a fun journey this has been.
Shadow and Crow was a thrilling, mysterious, very creepy and chilling finale to such a wonderful trilogy.
I will admit I forgot a couple of the side characters, but I did remember our wonderful main cast: Jennifer, Ian, Oliver, Dave, Gabrielle, Cameron, and beautiful mysterious Mosi.
It had been a while since I had read the second book of the trilogy and while the third book does give a couple of recap paragraphs, I definitely recommend maybe a skim read through the ending scenes of Smoke and Mirrors to refresh your mind.
I have said this in my precious reviews, but Claudia Cain has such a nice writing style that keeps the reader engaged throughout the entire story. With a little less than 500 pages for practically all three books this series can get a bit exhausting to read.
It always takes me a bit of courage to bring myself to start an almost 500 paged story, Shadow and Crow captures your attention and pulls you into its story.
I really enjoyed unpacking the mystery of this story, and I have to admit the villain of the story as well as the descriptions of the creepy shadow creatures from across the veil that can only be seen if cursed really freaked me out.
However, while I love a good paranormal mystery, for me the heart of this trilogy lies in its amazing main character, Jennifer Jones.
“I had a family once.”
“Do you not have a family now?”
Words cannot even begin to express my love for Jennifer. She has done terrible things, things she will never truly forgive herself for, but she is so dang selfless and wonderful and badass.
“I’ve never felt self-conscious about immortality until I have to try and explain it.”
She would do anything for her friends even if it means harm upon herself. She cares so much for Ian whom she takes under her wing, for Oliver who is the closest thing to family she has, for Mosi who has been with her for so long.
Seeing the affects of the curse on her, especially when it pertained to those she cared for, honestly broke my heart.
“I’m a person. I’m your friend. The fact that I could live forever doesn’t change the fact that your death would make ever day beyond this one worse.”
Jennifer and Oliver’s familial relationship is the sweetest thing ever. They have been through so much together, would do anything for each other, and I love it so much.
“He’s walked in darkness enough times to know when there’s something in darkness with him.”
And here comes my second favorite character of the trilogy: Mosi. Ahh, beautiful mysterious Mosi. His despair and his guilt broke my heart. Cain does a great job portraying the immense guilt and grief Mosi has, for he’s ancient and has been around for a long time. His protectiveness of Jennifer was so adorable and sweet, and I really love Mosi’s character.
There’s still so much about him that we do not know.
This trilogy honestly has so much lgbt+ representation and I just love it so much? Jennifer is bi and there’s a lesbian romance that’s super sweet and it’s just great.
Heads up though, after the first book the series isn’t really big on romance. I personally did not mind and that’s coming from someone who loves to ship people.
A quick honorable mention character: I really do love Igor, he is so strange and mysterious, but helpful in his own way. I loved how he was sort of a rock for Jennifer in her darkest times.
And finally, the ending. The ending was perfect. I loved how Cain finished off the series with room open for a possible companion/continuation series, but also how it all came back full circle.
“It mattered,” I say. “It doesn’t make a difference how much or little time it was. It mattered. All of it.”
Even if I cried a little bit, even if I was desperately hoping for something else, I am satisfied with the ending and could not have seen any other outcome.
There is clearly still so much in store for a lot of the characters and I wish them all the happiness in whatever goals they may choose.

"Why do you always manage to leave dead bodies lying around?"
This was hands down the best of the trilogy. With the pace of the first book and dangerous excitement of the second, this book came together to be a satisfying and emotional finale!
For this book, we start where Smoke and Mirrors left off (no spoilers!) and Jennifer and her friends are in the most danger they've ever been, not to mention the world. The creature they are facing is more than they have ever faced and not everyone is going to make it. Friendships are strengthened and broken, people are murdered, and others lose more than their lives. Looking back, there wasn't actually as much to the story as I thought, but sometimes simplicity really works. The book was kept action-packed, and nothing seemed redundant. The story flowed and unfolded at a great pace for a thriller and as I will keep saying, I was hooked.
Because of the relationship building of these characters in the first two books, Shadow and Crow's story kept me emotionally invested and clinging onto my Kindle for dear life in both fear and excitement. Were my precious babies going to make it? In the previous books, Mosi has been my favourite character, but I think with this book, Jennifer really shone through more (I still love Mosi!). The interactions between her and the werewolves and her and the vampire coven were some of the best, not to mention other scenes of hers that you'll just have to find out about. The writing on those was just amazing! Had me right on the edge of my seat.
This book left me warmed but broken, longing for more but also content knowing that the series ended where it should. There is nothing more impressive to me than an author who knows how to end their series realistically and satisfyingly - it's such a hard thing to do! Well done, Claudia! I LOVED IT.
For any of you thirsting for something a little bit action, a little bit of the mundane, I recommend you go pick up Silver and Bone and give it a shot.

A few months ago I was able to review Silver and Bone, which I ended up liking so much, that I read it in two days and decided I needed the sequel, Smoke and Mirrors immediately after. Like in a way that you can't continue living if you don't have the next book right now.
So when Claudia asked me to read and review the third and final book, Shadow and Crow, I obviously said yes.
The story continues right where the second book left off, and like always, the pacing is immediately good. There are no moments in the book where reading gets dull, and nothing really happens, because there is always something happening.
What I really liked about all these book really, is that even the small details get addressed. Too often, authors leave things in the open, and there are small plot holes. Not the case with these books. Even better, things that happened in the first and second book are still relevant and talked about in the third.
I also really like the writing style; it is modern and really gripped me into the story. The characters have become even more likable, and I can definitely see character development throughout all the books.
Now the ending.
This is where this review gets tricky, because I don't know how to properly address it without spoiling it a little for everyone.
But I will say this: the ending was good and realistic. As a reviewer, I like these type of endings, because they leave nothing in the open. It is a great way to end a trilogy.
However, as a reader I may have cried a little.
That's it. That's all I'll say about it.
In short, Shadow and Crow was a great book, and a great end to this series. I hope more people pick it up, because I could not stop reading and I guess that's saying something.

Shadow and Crow was the perfect ending to the Silver and Bone series. I'm so glad that I discovered this series, I enjoyed each installment more than the last. Shadow and Crow had everything I like in an urban fantasy book. Jennifer was such a relatable protagonist, the group dynamic was entertaining, and the secondary characters were well-developed.
In particular, I loved how Cain included some pitch-perfect humor to balance the darkness of this storyline. Ian is just as adorably clueless as ever while Mosi, Gabrielle, and Oliver carry the emotional side of this story. The central mystery unfolds at a nice pace, the book felt a lot shorter than it actually is (definitely did not feel like an almost 500 page novel). I would have liked a bit more in-depth explanation about the more mystical side of magic, particularly the symbols that played such a big role in this book.

Shadow and Crow is Book 3 in the Silver and Bone trilogy. This story picks up right shortly after the events in Smoke and Mirrors. The first two books in the trilogy do need to be read first, so head over and check out Silver and Bone, if you haven't done so yet. A being from beyond the veil without a body. A curse that cannot be cured or removed. The end of the world approaches, and it's up to Jennifer Jones and friends to save the day.
What can I say about the last book in this series? It has absolutely everything I loved about the first two books (the found family, the banter, the mystery, the action, the heartbreak), and then throw in extra shocks and tears. Cain made me cry. Again. Multiple times. She has the ability to endear her characters to you so much that their pain and suffering (and boy is there pain and suffering) is your pain and suffering. I love these characters SO much! Jennifer, Ian, Oliver, Dave, Mosi, Cameron, Tara, Gabrielle! I just want to give them all a big hug and then immediately wrap them all in bubble wrap!!
Cain has once again created a fantastic scary big bad. If he wasn't creepy enough, the crows and creatures from behind the veil throw in an extra dash to create an unsettling atmosphere for Jennifer and the reader. The sense of foreboding is heavy in this book given Jennifer's actions at the end of Smoke and Mirrors, and it leads to some lovely human moments between Jennifer and her friends. While I knew the ending was coming, I wasn't ready for it when it happened. It was emotional and heartbreaking, and fit the story perfectly.
I wish this series didn't have to end, but I absolutely love it!! It gave me all the feels, and was so much to read. Tears and all. Definitely recommend this for paranormal and fantasy readers who love suspense, banter, and a great found family!

This was a great ending to a great series.
I'm not usually into paranormal mystery books and yet I read all three in less than 4 days.
The characters are complex, and with the way that they're written, by the end of it, you'll feel like they're your friends. They feel like normal, everyday people, and yet they're not. And I found that beautiful and insipiring.
Jennifer Jones is someone who is by no means a perfect person, and that's what makes her one of the best characters. She's flawed, troubled, and definitely not an angel. But she would die for the people she loves.
Her relationship with Oliver, Gabrielle, Cameron, and Tara are some of the best written friendships. The way she knows she can always lean on Mosi, and he can always lean on her, is terribly beautiful and heart-warming. Her protectiveness of Ian, Dave, and Sebastian shows just how deep her love runs once she cares about someone, even if it is someone she just met.
And then there's Igor, maybe not a friend, but definitely more than just a much-appreciated acquaintance. I love their silent understanding of each other.
Most of the book is fast-paced action, but there is no way to miss just how many feelings run between these people.
I love how Cain doesn't shy away from showing how grief and trauma can change a person. It is not easy to describe those feelings, but she does it so effortlessly. She manages to make you feel the terror and hopelessness of the characters. And I love even more that not all of them manage to overcome every single fear they have. It makes them all the more real.
And then there's the ending. Again, Cain doesn't shy away from what needs to be done. That's why it so beautiful and bittersweet and full of hope and possibilities.
All in all, it is a great read. I couldn't recommend it enough.

What a finale!
I’ve loved this world and all these characters I’ve come to know and admire. I’m sad to say goodbye but it was a great ending if also full of heartbreak (classic Claudia Cain style 🤣).
It follows one from book2. The portal has unleashed a great evil and Jennifer now carries the death curse… cue the deadly race to vanquish the villain before he destroys everything. It was fast paced and high stakes, it wasn’t a matter of if there would be collateral damage but a matter of when and who. They’ve never faced anything so dangerous and they’ve not prepared for how it will affect them. They were a lot of traumatic moments (I cried at one point) but also a lot of the found family dynamics and really beautiful moments shared between the various characters as they all start to realise what they stand to loose. Jennifer was a wonderful mc and I really loved the interactions she had with her friends, the wolves and the coven and how she forever tries to keep everyone alive no matter what. She doesn’t always succeed but she tries. Again, I just loved her relationship with Ian and how it flourished.
The plot was compelling with the heightened tensions between factions and machinations and corruption the villain caused. I could feel the time ticking away as Jennifer and the gang raced to understand. I liked that Cain turned it on its head in this one and the characters earned the answers early but ultimately were faced with the fact they didn’t know how to defeat him. The spiral of hopelessness and loss ached and the ending felt right even if I wanted it to go differently.
Overall an amazing end to the series. It put me through the wringer of emotions and delivered a cast a characters I adore. The whole series felt unique and endlessly engaging and this finale delivered a punch. I like where it left most of the characters and the soft hope I had for their futures.
Its safe to say Claudia Cain is an auto buy author for me!

Reading the Silver and Bone trilogy has been a wonderful and thrilling journey, and it ends with an unexpected conclusion!
The plot picks up right after the ending of book 2, Smoke and Mirrors, with the stakes even higher. A powerful evil entity escapes from the veil, trying to wreak havoc in the human world and driving a war between the supernatural beings.
Jennifer is truly an amazing character; I admire her and feel for her because she’s been through a lot.
I absolutely love the family she found and the friendships she forms in unexpected ways. They always love and support her, and their humor livens up this serious and dark story!
The last few chapters were heart-breaking to read with so much oss and grief. Even with the final goal fulfilled, the bittersweet ending was a fitting conclusion to the story
The ending also left a glimpse of hope for a spin-off series with a new main character, which I would love to read!
Overall, this series was a must-read for fans of paranormal mystery thriller with found family and badass FMC!

I can't believe it is over. What have you done Claudia?! This book left me incredibly sad and at the same time absolutely satisfied. I knew from the first two books that whatever I expected, it would go the other way, because Claudia can spin a story so perfectly it keeps you completely tangled in it's nets.
The third and last book starts where the second one ended, so Jennifer and her friends don't get much room to breath and the story gets even darker and darker. I LOVED the second book, but Shadow and Crow just runs even faster and I kept turning the pages at ligh speed.
This book is creepy and emotional and it will wrench your heart out.
If you like monsters, and I'm not counting the Vampires and Wolves, you will love this book!
This whole series really.
It is one of the best Urban Fantasy series I read in a long time and I hope that we will hear from Claudia again.

Great Ending
Loved this book. Well written and fast paced with well developed characters, many I've become quite attached to. A great ending to the trilogy.

What a fantastic end to a great series! Twists and turns all throughout the book with the story wrapping up brilliantly.
