"...weaves vivid descriptions of the Revolutionary War era.” –IndieReader

Lily Van Der Houghton, a newly licensed physician, is lost and unsettled on which way her life is leading her when she goes hiking to the Jacks River Falls. Lily stumbles through a hole in time and finds herself in 1763. She is not on the trail to the falls anymore but is in Indian Territory in the aftermath of the French and Indian War. To her surprise, Lily learns she has a key role in an ancient Cherokee prophecy. The tribal elders prayed for the right woman to come from Beyond to be Red Moon Woman and the right woman for Marcus McCarron. Lily Van Der Houghton, fresh from the new millennium, is the right woman for the job.

This second book in the series went WAY off the rails, IMHO. There was some interesting Native American spiritual/earth lore but, sad to say, it went into too much silliness and sex for me. Too bad, because the first one was really good and I was really interested in Lily's story.

I loved this book - not only for an intriguing story of modern time travelers living in a fascinating historic period, but for its' delightful attention to practical, everyday life and details in the late 1700s. I literally got lost in the story; the time was well spent, and I will be re-reading Lily's Story again.

Lily is a recently graduated physician who cares deeply for obstetrics and emergency medicine. When she travels Beyond, she becomes determined to learn and intimately understand Cherokee herbal and other medical lore, then apply that knowledge to save lives. Along the way she encounters (now) famous - and infamous - men and women who influenced American history in memorable fashion. Lily also finds she is part of that history in ways she never could have imagined, growing up over two hundred years later.

While clearly portraying the incredible mental stress a modern doctor would be under if transported to that time period (and a woman at that!), the author focuses on the grit required by the protagonist to survive, thrive, and become a true heroine in an often harsh reality. Yes, a good deal of lovely and lively romance is also involved in this historic thriller - but what drew me into the story was Lily's dogged research into practical herbal remedies, and how physicians and midwives of the time were able to save as many lives as they did with so little true (modern) scientific knowledge. It was heart warming.

Kudos to author Sharon K. Middleton for spotlighting ancient folklore remedies which still perform well in the modern world. They added a wonderful touch of authenticity to Lily's story - and indeed, made the protagonist a bit of a heroine for the present as well as for her past world.

For fans of this genre, be sure and give Sharon Middleton a try. I was interested in the time period and the contrast between Lily's modern medicine and medical treatments after the French and Indian War. Also the Cherokee prophecy and colorful tribal language was enjoyable. Middleton's writing style is smooth and flows well. Settle in for a book that'll let you immerse yourself in another time.

Loved it!

Unfortunately I read Sassy's Story first. . .not realizing there was a Book 1. The best part is they were both captivating reads & it turned out to be OK to read Sassy first. I truly hope there are sequels to this series. I would read them in a heartbeat!

This is Lily's story on how she left the present time to go to the past. She meets Marc and they fall in love. They live in McCarron's Corner and are very happy. Lily was a doctor in the present time so she is very sad when she cannot save her friend Ginny who lives with Cherokee. Ginny's brother shows up and they go with him to see his parents and this takes them on a trip to many places that reveal some of Marc's past.

I thoroughly enjoy this author’s writing style. This book was good, but I didn’t connect to it as I did the first book. I just bought the third book because the first two were so good. I liked the stories, the characters, and the fact that there are a lot of details in the books, but not so much it gets boring. I feel as if the author is a friend who’s telling me the story over a cup of coffee. I appreciate how the author has given the people in the book a full life. She explains their personalities, their interests, and their beliefs. I’m not a fan of the era, but the author writes in a way that it doesn’t feel like a history lesson, but I still learn some. I recommend this book.

I received a copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I enjoyed how the author tied current day information into the 1700s. There were a few times that I got a little confused by the people in the story, but overall this had a good story line. I haven't ready any of the other McCarron books, but they are definitely on my to-read list now!

I won this book through Goodreads. Very enjoyable book, time traveler. A modern doctor named Lily Van Der Houghton is going to 1778 and learning the medicine ways of the Cherokee Indians and using it along with her modern knowledge. My first book by this author, very good. Thank you.

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Historical Fiction, Romance

I love this kind of novel, one which has day to day minutiae of life in times long past and was eager to get started.
I found a number of things that bothered me though. Lily takes going back in time in her stride, to the point where she acts as if its perfectly normal, and those back in the past act as if her appearance is an everyday thing. I know they've the advantage of superstition and a prophecy but it felt kind of wrong somehow that everyone was so open and accepting. Then there's the stuff she just happens to ave on her that play such an important part in the story. Does she really always carry stuff like that around with her. The blood cards in particular, just how many of them did she have? The way people in the past just happily let her test them in a time when anything out of the ordinary was viewed with suspicion was a little weird too for me.
Then there are the many parallels with the Diana Gabaldon Outlander stories. Having read those books several times over I noticed a number of themes that crop up in both.....nothing in fiction is every really unique, but sometimes there were parts that for me felt a little too close. The language and idioms used, I accept Lily would use 21st century speech but the way so often no one queried it? And even used expressions themselves felt a bit wrong.
The story itself was interesting, but I wished there was more from the McCarron's Corner and the prophecy in it. The first part of the story is there but it seemed to move on to town very quickly.
If you can get past these barriers then its a story you may love, there are some inviting parts but for me the quirks were more than just a minor irritation and the story fell short because of it.

Stars: Two and a half, a story with great potential but which was let down for me by the things I've mentioned.

I wont say that the plot or the setting is boring. In dact it is the opposite. The characters seem intetesting, but as the story progresses, I find the characters rush through it. I mean Lily and Marc for example just jump to being erotically flirty. Neither does this suit the characters nor the time they are in. I will keep updating my view on this as I read further.

The book rushes with the plot. The characters are uncosistent. The actions of the characters are not consistent with their characteristics, same is applicable to their speech. Some of the things are super unrealistic, one doesnot simply go shopping when their baby is missing or even crack jokes about someone being a duke; super inconsistent with characters and awkward jn the moment. The whole storytelling lacks a good steady flow and feels like the original book was cut to only 1/3rd. A lot of the facts are incorrect. I mean comeon! All babies have blue eyes when they are born!? Really? Global warming known to people in the 18th century? There are people who dont believe in it now.
Overall I think this book not worthy to be read and wasted time on

Fun look at history.

I enjoyed the time travel and the way historical references were incorporated into the story. It was a bit too detailed in the medical talk, but still good. I loved trying to make the world better back then! The glaring current terminology’s use back then was a complete Flub, for me.

While Lily’s Story is technically the second in the McCarron’s Corner series, this prequel is set 15 years before Beyond McCarron’s Corner. Lily is a young physician, who has just completed her residency in ER medicine. However, she has realized she also has a deep love for Ob-Gyn work, and has been asked to consider another residency in that field. She goes hiking deep in tbe Cohutta Wilderness to try to decide which will be her future, and discovers she has gone back in time to the 1760’s. Her future is in the past, where she will combine modern medicine with Cheromee folk medicine and shamanic practices.

Lily also learns she holds a special role in an ancient Cherokee prophecy, and falls in love with a man unlike any she ever expected to love in tall, blo de, and introverted Marcus McCarron. Will love be enough to help them survive a hurried courtship?

I throughly enjoyed reading Lily’s Story. It tied into the previous book by Sharon Middleton, Beyond McCarron’s Corner nicely without retelling the entire story. These two books are stand alone stories but join together to give a broader description of the life and times in historic America. These are well researched and entertaining.
