In a sea of baking sleuths, magical cats, therapy dogs and women dumped by their dreadful spouses and moVing back to hometown comes HUBBERT AND LIL. Loved this series. I wish there were more. We're not in a small town with Amish buggies in it, we're in NYC, the Big Apple. I learned a lot about NYC and enjoyed the tour, peopled with quirky and memorable characters. Theodore S Hubbert--who has just retired from his job on Wall Street--and his Auntie Lil who at 84 should be slowing down but isn't--are a force to be "feared" if you're a murderer..
Each mystery progresses our knowledge of this unlikely couple. And we pick up new characters too like the rich Lila Cheswick and Herbert Wong. The only fly in my ointment was that I skimmed some pages with graphic details that I didn't want to picture in my mind--I have along memory. But each story rang true and I devoured these UNUSUAL, WITTY, AND CAPTIVATING mysteries. I just wish there were more than four! I looked at the other books by this author under other names and was warned by the reviewers of the foul language. Sigh... To each his own I guess. But I may re-read this collection. You may enjoy it!
PARTNERS IN CRIME The description of the people is priceless, and makes for a good beginning to this series. Theodore has just retired, and is called back when a partner has been murdered. Telling him to find the answers, they must protect the firm. He enlist his Aunt Lil to help, and she is a force to recon with, and determined . As for T.S. retirement may have been of a few hours, but he comes back with an attitude I thought, The casual dress, and being around his AuntLil I’m sure will change him more.It is witty, and enjoyable and murder. A CAST OF KILLERS Deceased woman and no identity the plot around her was a little to gritty. Seeing T.S. is still his usual uptight compared to Aunt Lik who every one loves.Good mystery to figure out. DEATH OF A DREAM MAKER With this murder Aunt Lil knew him, a former beau, and lover for many years. . Things happen at the graveside, with too many bodies being there. Then it is priceless to see the widow‘S mishap. A lot of laughs to enjoy in this series.
Which are actually murder stories solved by 83-year old Aunt Lil and her recently retired very conservative nephew Theodore. Character development was extremely entertaining, as a rule. I loved the indominitable personality of Aunt Lil who certainly lives life to the full after rhe majority of her working years were spent in the fashion industry. Now in her old age she dresses flamboyantly, eats enormous meals with great enthusiasm, drinks copious amounts of spicy bloody Mary's without restraint, throwing herself into life with great enthusiasm. She embraces everyone equally until they prove themselves to be criminally minded or despicable. There are four different stories in the set, which I received free of charge. I read them all. At times they dragged a little but overall I enjoyed the series.
Aunt Lil Hubbert is 84 years old & her only nephew, Theodore S. Hubbert (a/k/a T.S.), is 55 years old. They both live two different apartments in Manhattan.
T.S. recently retired as the head of the personnel department at Sterling & Sterling an investment bank. He worked for 35 years.
Aunt Lil loves to investigate murders, trying to find even a small clue. And she always gets T.S. involved. Also tell you there is one more person who helps with them, Herbert Wong who worked for many as a messenger at Sterling & Sterling.
There too many characters to list in four book series.
But if love to read murder mysteries, than this four book series you should read & enjoy!
I hope you like this book series as much as I did.
Hubbert and Lil have taken Manhattan by storm. They are an 84 year old Aunt Lil who knows everyone's business and says exactly what she wants, and her nephew Hubbert who has just retired from a stuffy Wal Street office where he was personnel direct for nearly 30 years.
This pair isa streetwise, trendy pair of slueths, mistrusted by the police, ready to step in and try to solve every murder. They make a very unlikely pair as Hubbert is neat as a pin and Lil lives surrounded by junk, whether it's her pocketbook or apartment.
This boxset has four different books included and one story builds on the previous one. Very interesting reading, fun and page turning. This is a great buy and one that is a joy to read.
It took me quite awhile to get through all these books. Book 1 I did not think much of TJ. He was boorish, up tight, a neat freak. Couldn't relate. Book 2 I read before but read it again. I would not give up on Aunt Lil. My friend is 87 and is Auntie Lie. She doesn't solve crimes but otherwise she is just as stubborn and know it all and takes over and organizes everyone and everything. Book 3 the best of the stories where Aunt Lil becomes involved with her long time love who she hasn't seen for 20 years ago. Book 4 still held my attention. Recommend when you have time to read straight through 4 novels. Good characters and stories that will hold your interest.
A lively octagenarian and her fussy recently retired nephew solve murders - quite amusing and entertaining, although a bit over the top on occasion. I hope this was not the complete series, as it says on this book with the first four Hubbert & Lil stories, but that the stories with Aunt Lil and T.S., and Herbert and Lilah go on. And whatever happened to that Police Inspector from the first 2 books? And some other characters the reader meets and in my case would like to see again? Definitely more, please.
The stories just got bettet as I read. I absolutely loved the characters and the mysteries were top notch. I hope the suthor will be compelled to write a few more. These just whet my appetite. Very sophisticated for a series about an elderly lady detective working with her nephew, a New York monied sophisticate and a grown-up Asian kung-fu master. Missed sleep a few nights when I couldn't put it down. Hurray for Gallagher Grey!!
Fun reads, a little too long in the denouement at times, and constant referral to eyes as almond shaped and or green suggest Daniel Silva and his wife cowrote these ads its not his thriller style, but he uses the same plain words toi try to elicit, "Ahhhhs," from his readers who must think those are the epitome of perfect sexy eyes. It gets repetitious in both these books ans in his, and I haven't seen this in other books.
This is a wonderful series that keeps you interested until the end of each book. The characters are well developed and add humor to every case Auntie Lil is quite a character who leads her entourage of helpers on some wild capers! I enjoyed these books and didn't want to stop reading once I started. I would recommend these books to everyone who enjoys cozy mysteries with a twist of humor.
Chock full of intrigue, suspense, and red herrings . . .
. . . Hubbert and Lil will bring you lots of chuckles too.
Is it realistic to think that an octogenarian and her 55yo nephew can run around NYC solving crimes that the NYPD can't unravel? Maybe, maybe not. But you'll have a whole lot of fun curled up in your favourite chair while following along on their wild adventures!
If you're interested in a pleasantly absorbing distraction Hubbert & Lil are the detectives for you. A strong minded, fearless old lady and her obsessive-compulsive nephew -- the pair of them find a d understand clues -- or sometimes just get lucky... but the criminals get caught. I wish there was another book in the series.
I love the main characters in these books; they are so entertaining and quirky. Being from the ages of mid fifties to eighties, they are not the usual leads you find in detective stories. The settings, the secondary characters, and mysteries are all enjoyable, too. There are very few editing errors to disturb the reader.
This 84-year-old auntie and her 55-year-old nephew manage to get themselves embroiled in very interesting situations in this fascinating set of adventures. After hanging with Auntie Lil this week, I'm no longer quite as sure that aging is going to be nearly as bad as I had feared. Kudos to the author for remaining positive even while acknowledging some of the negative realities of growing older. Recommended
Such wonderful characters. Loved Auntie Lil. Even though she was in her 80's she still liked to get out and do things, sitting around as not for her!! She loved to solve murders too. Being her age everyone just thought she was a nosey old lady. These books also have humor which made me laugh out loud.
Hubert & lil was very enjoyable. I read the whole series and loved the description of the people and surroundings. The way the mysteries was laid out and solved was interesting and they always had compassion and love for each other. I could see the pictures in my head as I read. Thanks for the stories.
The characters are plausible and subject to the foibles of real people. There is plenty of misdirection to keep you guessing. The only negative thing was that every once in a while you have to reread a section to interpret what was just said (a Huh? moment). Overall, very good and makes you want to come back to the books.
Four books, each one as good or better than the last of exciting mysteries that T.S. Hubbert and his very outspoken Auntie Lil set out to solve. I enjoyed all 4 books immensely!
These stories are as good as any I have read on my kindle and better than most. If I had known how good they are I would have paid for them, but am happy to have gotten free.
These collection of story's get your attention and your imagination and take you in a journey that is fun and addictive. I went from one to the next. I just couldn't get enough i wanted to see what aunty Lil was going to get into next..
I liked how the series developed off the previous story, but could easily stand alone if it wasn't read as part of a set. These two demonstrated that one can get far by "who you know", especially if you can't prove "what you know".
I loved the series!..what a surprise and treasure to find these books loaded with twists and turns, laughter and joy let alone, mystery and murder...excellently written!
Four great mysteries in one set. I really enjoyed the main characters, and the secondary players were well defined as well. Really enjoyed this series and hope there will be more.
Auntie Lil drove her nephew T.S. nuts with her constant unwelcome assistance to the NYPD. Their oriental friend , Herbert, was the only one that could barely control her. Life was never simple for poor Theodore.
I am glad that I was able to read the entire 4 books at once. I loved the mysteries, but I lived the sly humor even more. The funeral scene was the funniest thing I've read all year! Thank you
Delightful tales of murder and mayhem. Includes all the opportunities to say "No...don't do that " and "You know better thrn to do that". Age is not a problem for Auntie Lil and nephew Theodore makes new horizons.
A light hearted and humorous approach to solving murders. TJ and his Aunt Lillian are always in the wrong place at the right time. The way the characters develop and interact with each other makes for good reading. Thoroughly enjoyable.
I hope there is more. Auntie Lil is such a character and busybody. Theodore her nephew is up for anything his beloved Aunt can dish up. Oh I hope there are more of these books.
Imagine a cold winter night and a nice glass of your favorite beverage with this fun filled book to read. Sit back And relax and enjoy The mystery of Discovering that it doesn't mean getting old means Stagnating.
