When I read the title I expected Bambi but a fox instead of a deer. What I got was the Fox & the Hound. Somehow the book glorifies fox hunting whilst following the viewpoint of the fox. Very confusing. I enjoyed some of the scenes of Scotty and Cragsman playing, and there were some lovely Scotty in the wild scenes, but mostly it was the poor Scotty running away from relentless and overworked hounds and horses. The illustrations were really brilliant though. All this said, it is a children's book from 1932 so what did I expect?
A really enjoyable little tale, as long as you aren't offended by things like foxhunting. It had a very Jim Kjelgaard-ish vibe for me, just a simple story about a fox cub raised in captivity who then escapes and goes on to learn how to survive in the wild. While a cub, he is raised alongside a foxhound puppy, which also plays into the story as things go along. While this wasn't a mind-blowing book, it was interesting and fun to read a wildlife tale set somewhere with which I'm unfamiliar.
