No power. No lights. No Hope. It’s a bad time to be afraid of the dark.
The EMP strikes and the electricity cuts off. The computers go dead. Society is on the brink of doom. The only way to survive is to get out, away from the cities and into the wilderness.
At work, Reid is an office drone with a keen sense of things about to go very, very wrong. He's one of the very first to understand what’s coming. His plan is to get to an old farmhouse he inherited a few years ago as fast as possible. He’s an expert on EMP and thinks he's ready. He soon discovers there's a lot more to surviving than simply having the right tools.
At home, Michelle is pulling a sickie off work. What begins as a regular power outage soon becomes outright terrifying. The peaceful place she once called home has become hell. She needs to trust in strangers to keep her safe. Can she do it?
At school, Gina picks up her kids to get them out of dodge. She drives a dented pickup truck and lives to hunt. She has the skills to sustain her family, but can she make it to the lodge in time?
Do Reid, Michelle, and Gina have what the situation demands to survive? Even the best-laid plans can succumb to unexpected challenges.
Cut Off is Book One of The Cut Off series, a post-apocalyptic survival thriller trilogy. Ever wondered what you would do in the case of an EMP?

Very disappointed in this copy of the book I got from Amazon. I get that it his a short book but it is really only 18% of the actual download. It also stops in mid scene. It does not discuss Gina at all as the blurb says. The rest of the download is a part of another series. Even the part that is on topic does not come together. I don't really care at all about if Michelle or Reid make it at this point. Neither seem to be very empathetic people that I care about.
A very interesting book in which surrounds society when the power is cut off from all electronic communication including telephones. The book follows the main character, Reid as he tries to come to terms with this fact and survive.

Cut Off is a short story of how modern day people cope when everything is cut off! Something has happened and the power has gone off, phone lines aren’t working and neither is the internet. All things we all use and need to carry out modern day life. There are three main characters in this story, Reid a bored office worker but also somewhat of a prepper; Gina a mother of two teens; and Michelle alone in her flat recovering from a hangover.
Reid has always thought something might happen one day, but hasn’t gone into any sort of ‘full prepper’ preparation mode. He is staring out the window when the power goes off. Everyone else sits there waiting for it to come back on, but Reid understands what is happening and goes straight home for his go bag and other provisions. His plan is to drive to an old farmhouse he inherited a few years before and thinks he is ready, but will soon find out to survive, you need more than just tools.
Gina is delivering food for one of her numerous jobs, when the lights and radio go out, she gets a bad feeling and goes straight to her kids high school to pick them up. Slightly embarrassing for her son and daughter as she bursts into their classrooms and orders them to follow her! She has a pick up truck and loves to hunt, so plans to drive them to a hunting lodge she knows well.
Michelle is at home in her flat, pulling a sickie to help recover from the night before. When the power goes off, she ends up on the side of being terrified as others take advantage of the outage. Her flat is no longer a safe haven and she will have to rely on a stranger to keep her safe.
Their separate lives and plans for survival are all they have to keep safe and adjust to the changing landscape of life in front of them. They will need to avoid others and will cross paths with others and each other, some to their detriment and unavoidable. You will soon learn what it may take to survive all that man can throw at you in such a situation, but there is more to come….
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
CUT OFF A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival Thriller Series PART ONE by PERRIN BRIAR
Started 16 July 2018. Finished 18 July 2018.
The book starts with a narrative from each of the main characters POV, describing what could happen if an EMP type of event was to occur in the United States of America assuming that you and they (the characters)were in or near a suburb of a large to major city.
One guy (male mid 20s to mid 30s) inherited a farm and started to dream about moving into it, fixing it up, and pretty much chucking his office job out the window. He had been studying online what all could happen during an EMP, yet was still to a degree caught flat-footed. The EMP strikes and he has a better understanding of what just happened than his coworkers (wisely he keeps his mouth shut as he leaves work for the last time).
The second (female, adult, but younger) had called in sick to work because of a hangover from a failed romance. So she slept through the event and was woken by an elderly neighbor, shortly after the initial event.
The descent into the initial removal of civilization starts to occur for these two people -one at home and the other driving to his home to get a few things (he should ve had in his vehicle). The female is wisely (sensing that the strange pickup that showed up in the parking lot is bad news is hiding and quiet).
The first guy was stopped at a roadblock a short distance from his home. But he was still about 12 hours during normal times.
On the last trip of getting his survival gear loaded, he heard his neighbor starting to be raped. So it begins . . . .
I love all of Perrin Briar's books and this looks like it has the potential to grow into a real horror story what with all the lights going out, all machinery switched off and all communication systems being down people are bound to start panicking especially when night time hits them! However my only problem with part 1 of this book is that it was way too short and stopped very abruptly, just when I was really getting into the story which is quite gripping. So this was more like an introduction rather than part 1 of a book!! I still look forward to reading the rest of this post-apocalyptic EMP survival thriller.
Personally, when I downloaded this book, I was under the impression it was a full book. A short story maybe, but a full book. It was about 4 chapters long and I was slightly apprehensive when I read it because, I don't think I really wanted to think about something like this happening any time soon. The issue is, every day it really is a possibility. So this helps put it slightly into perspective and has you think about possible outcomes, need vs want, action, etc. I understand others' issues and thought processes on the situation, but I personally can't wait to read more.
I really like Perrin Briar's writing. But, this is not one of his best, I don't think.
If it was labeled as a short intro to a new series, that would be ok. There is a lot of possibilities there. But, as a stand alone...I was left scratching my head.
By no means will this stop me from reading his other books. He has some great stories to tell.
This has got to be one of the best Post-Apocalyptic books out there. From the first word until the last, this author has crafted a tale here, which has the reader is totally lost in this story of survival. And to top it off, before the story starts there is a short excerpt of what reads like another great story by this author. On to part TWO.
Was impressed enough to decide the but the complete series both stories were well written and kept you wanting to know more or wondering what caused the events to happen that caused the change to the human race. Would recommend reading the series by reading Part-one and follow on buying the rest of the series.
A short opener to a new series - more a teaser/taster than a true sample and ending on a cliffhanger. It does achieve the desired aim - I now want to read more!
The author has a number of other series, so I'll have to make do with them for now...
Cut Off: Part One is a short story that introduces the premise of the series. I rated it 3 stars only because it is so short and just a teaser for the series. I am interested enough by it to want to read the book. Hopefully it will live up to what this short seems to promise.
I like that the book has the two views of the main characters,Reid and Michelle. It got straight into the scene ,and the story makes you think what would happen if we were hit with an EMP attack.Would recommend that you read this book, can't wait for the finish story.
I enjoyed this story. It is a quick read. I would have given it five stars but the way it cuts off without any warning, leaving you wondering how the story is going to develop, is the one thing I don't enjoy.
I received a ARC of Perrin Briar's book, Cut Off: Part 1 and this is my voluntary, honest review. 5 star writing. Interesting plot. Characters are likeable. Part 1 was way to short. It left me wanting more, but then again, it was only an introduction. I am eagerly waiting for more.
