Ruby Bridges was just six years old when she was chosen to be the first (and only) black child in the all-white William Frantz Elementary School. At the time, Ruby was too young to understand how the simple act of attending school would change the lives of many to come. Her courageous act left the legacy that given a chance, anyone at any age can make a difference in the world.
I enjoyed going back in time to read about a little black girl with so much courage. And paving the way for future generations to get an equal education, in a culture filled society with hate, prejudice, and ignorance. Ruby had more courage than those adults who feared diversity because of the color of her dark skin. Ruby's story makes me proud of being a person of color and grateful for her journey. A journey worth fighting for.
This book has a lot of information. The previous books I have read about Ruby Bridges were very basic. I am working on finding out more information and this book helped a lot, even though it was directed at children. I would recommend this one over the other books about the desegregation of schools and how Ruby Bridges handled herself in the process.
I enjoy discovering facts about Ruby Bridges I didn't know. Well written with vivid pictures to give life to the story itself. This is a book that will forever be in our family collection. I read this to my boys and hopefully in time they will read to their own kids. Great resource to educate my sons about the difficulty and struggles black folks had to endure to get a quality and equal education. I want to use this book as a tool of encouragement for my boys to achieve and appreciate their best in school.
This is a must-read for any classroom and family in K12. Students will be able to explore the life and steps of Ruby Bridges through this book! The "Did You Know," and other text features of the book make this an excellent teacher resource for extensions and connections. Vocabulary words are also bold and defined throughout the text. This is a book that's needed on every classroom and family shelf!
