This is a wonderful flap book introducing children to the way their own bodies work in a fun and informative way. It is a new, smaller format of the ""Look Inside"" series, perfect for little fingers. It is full of surprises to keep enquiring minds entertained, including flaps beneath flaps and a cheeky peek inside a toilet cubicle. Young readers' minds will boggle as they learn about how their brains work, what happens when they eat, how their lungs use oxygen and much more.
Louie Stowell started her career writing carefully researched books about space, ancient Egypt, politics, and science, but eventually she lapsed into just making stuff up. She likes writing about dragons, wizards, vampires, fairies, monsters, and parallel worlds. Louie Stowell currently works as the publisher of Ladybird Books and lives in London with her wife, Karen; her dog, Buffy; and a creepy puppet that is probably cursed.
There’s a few in this Look Inside series by Usborne that we keep at our house, and I like each of them a lot. All of them, I’ve come to appreciate as tactile encyclopedias. It’s not an overwhelming amount of information for a read-aloud cover to cover. Nor is it like an almanac or any other collection of entirely separate articles. However, there is a ton on each page, and although the theme graces beautifully across each page into the next, a large portion of the lifted flaps go as many as 3 layers deep. The details and the storytelling combine phenomenally. Our oldest lost captivation 2-years into owning this book, but in those 2-years, he opened here and there, and we kept the narrative front to back with a surprise here and there. Our youngest is most enthusiastic about it as a posterized broad page wherever we open up, and his main fascination is getting to every flap and apprising discoveries as a major part of his interest. So, I also think these are great for familiarizing (them and you) with their learning preferences and styles!
This is a little book that I happened to pick up lying around my cousins house. As soon as I grabbed it he was only dying to talk me through it. It is a flap book that intrigues children, the excitement that they have to see what’s under the flaps. It will introduce children to the wonders of the human body in a humorous but accurate way. Bright, original colour illustrations and diagrams display all the major organs of the human body and are accompanied by witty, clear and informative factual text. This is human biology at its best, a book both educational and enjoyable.

The book is all about the human body from the digestive system to the skeleton and everything in between. There is a lot of detail but not too much that makes it difficult for the children to read. The writing is split up into small bubbles of writing and the children are able to work their way round the book in a creative way. Having the flaps in the book also add that element of excitement making it a fun learning tool. It is written in an informative, factual but informal way which is beneficial because it is adding to the children’s vocabulary as well as understanding things that are going on with their own bodies in a fun way. I love how interactive it is and would never fail to get children excited. There are so many links you can make with science and would be a fantastic tool to use when introducing different processes and body parts in biology. It would be useful throughout KS1-2. Even if the younger children are not fully aware of all the terms they are still able to use their fine motor skills when using the flaps etc. You could link it to the film Inside Out if you want to include work on emotions and feelings for kids who are slightly older.
I love the Usborne Flap books. They are so rich in information. They make learning so much fun! There are flaps within flaps. It's packed with lots of information, but written simple for a child to understand. My toddler loves to open the flaps as I read them to her. The diagrams bring the information to life which enhances the understanding level. I have other books about the human body. I highly recommend this book as one to start kids off. It's easy to disguise.
Look Inside Your Body stands out as a valuable addition to children's literature. It successfully marries the joy of reading with the thrill of discovery, making it an engaging and educational journey for young minds eager to explore the wonders of the human body. This book is not only informative but also an empowering tool that encourages children to understand and appreciate the amazing complexity of their own bodies.
Zero acknowledgment of disability and the fact that not all bodies are the same. Would have given it 5 stars if it had SOME mention of the fact that all bodies are different and not all bodies work in the same way. It’s a book about the human body. Why not use it as an opportunity to discuss the diversity of our bodies?
3 year old LOVES it! The lifting flaps are fun and informational. It has tons of great information and while my kid only truly understands a bit of the information, he loves it and I'm sure we'll continue reading it for many years.
Got this for my daughter, being a nurse I couldn't resist. She is only 2 so she hasn't read it yet but I know it will get her interested in the wonders of the human body because of the great pictures and flaps.
This book is fantastic! My 3-year old son absolutely loves it. Each night got the past few weeks this has been his first choice of bedtime stories. There are a ton of flaps to lift and each page is filled with great information!
This is a favorite for my kids. They love lifting the flaps, naming the different parts of the body, connecting with the information, giggling about the poop moving through the intestines, and asking a lot of questions. I love that it is fun and educational. I'm learning right along with them.
🤧💩🤚🧠🫁🫀🦷🦴👂👅👁👃💋 facts about the body • you need 5 fruit and vegetables in a day to stay healthy. •you have about 100,000 hairs on your head. •the dip on your top lip is called a philtrum.
This book is chock full of fantastic information about how our bodies work (did you know you breathe enough air to fill about 10k balloons each day??). Not as detailed as See Inside Your Body, it is perfect for a little bit younger readers. My daughter is 2 and a half and loves to open the flaps (and then the next flaps) and turn through the super THICK board pages.
This book details information on your senses, your muscles, your brain, and yes, how you digest food (everybody loves the poop!). I am already using it to help teach my daughter about how her body works, why certain things are important (sleep, vegetables), and also how to take care of herself (nails keep growing until you cut them, it's important to clean boo-boos).

Both my kids (4 and 5) love this book, and keep arguing about who's going to have it as their bedtime story. Fun and educational - quite advanced too for their age, but the flaps make it very engaging. My daughter says their are 72 flaps, not 100, but I can't verify this!
Both of my kids loved it. It kept their attention the whole time we read it. This book has a lot of cool facts & it was very educational. The book has flaps you lift up with more facts and that makes it even more fun! We really like usborne books.
Settle in, it could take you and your curious 4-year-old and hour to lift every flap within a flap and answer every question. But wow, there's such a wealth of information here, and it's accessible to the young mind thanks to their similes and comparisons.
