C H Clepitt has a Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of the West of England. As her Bachelor’s Degree was in Drama, and her Master’s Dissertation focused on little known 18th Century playwright Susannah Centlivre, Clepitt’s novels are extremely dialogue driven, and it has often been observed that they would translate well to the screen.

Since graduating in 2007, she gained experience in community and music journalism, before establishing satirical news website, Newsnibbles in 2010. In 2011 she published her book, A Reason to Stay, which follows the adventures of disillusioned retail manager, Stephen, as he is thrust into village life and the world of AmDram. Clepitt’s feminist fantasy, The Book of Abisan not only crosses worlds, but confuses genres, and has been described as a crime drama with magic. She has often said that she doesn’t like the way that choosing a genre forces you to put your book into a specific little box, and instead she prefers to distort the readers’ expectations and keep them guessing. Her 2016 work, I Wore Heels to the Apocalypse does just that, as just like the characters, the readers won’t know what’s going on in this laugh out loud satirical scifi.

A really great premise but the execution didn’t hold up. This is my first novella by Clepitt. As a fantasy and paranormal fan, I was excited to read this. I really liked the premise and I thought it had so much potential. Unfortunately, I didn’t care for Clepitt’s story choices or her chosen pace for this novella.

The main story is about a woman named Andi who works two jobs just to pay the rent. Her self-esteem is at an all-time low with a mother who is constantly putting her down. But when Andi dreams, she becomes a sword wielding warrior with all the confidence in the world. When Andi meets another warrior woman in her dreams but then also in real life, Andi realizes her dream world might have real life consequences.

I enjoyed both main characters in this story. Andi the sarcastic lesbian that is unsure of herself in real life but a tough warrior in her dreams. And Dionne a bisexual woman, who is wheelchair bound after an accident, and is confident warrior woman in the dream world and out. I liked the quick connection between these two and I had high hopes for their possible romance and adventures.

My problem was after the book setup this cool premise with good characters, it’s like the story went in fast forward. The pacing became so fast it felt spastic, and my enjoyment started to go downhill. Instead of being immersed in this adventure, I felt like I was being told this, than being told that. New concepts, bad guys, good guys, powers that Andi had, it is just thrown at you one after the other and got my head spinning. Instead of taking the time to explain why this is happening, we are on to the next big thing. I understand there is limited time in a novella, but this was just too many things, too many concepts all packed in like a can of sardines without enough room for any of these concepts to grow.

I hate to say this but I think Clepitt should get rid of this novella and turn this story into a full-length book. She could give all of her ideas room to grow. She could expand on all the secondary characters, what the Dream Guild is, why the bad guys are bad and the good guys good, Andi’s powers, and even the budding romance between the mains. This really is a cool premise with such potential that it is a shame everything was rushed and squashed together. Unfortunately, I can’t really recommend this novella as it is, but there is such good bones here that I’m disappointed to say that.

A copy was given to me for a honest review.

A fun read, and the idea is a good one. Dream warriors. But we dashed through this story without much depth and I would have loved to see this as a longer story with greater details and more time on building up the characters.

Also, although I love cross-genre stories it is uncertain whether this is mystical/SF/Urban/Fantasy/Paranormal. The Guild, for example is to help people. Good. They have access to cloning and greater medical breakthroughs than normal medicine. If they are there to help why don't they share? There are other points, but that would be at risk of too many spoilers.

Definitely worth a read, though, in spite of these niggles.

So what if your dreams are real? What if the superhero you become when the lights go out is the real you?

Alongside a tightly woven superhero story, the author manages a subtext of awkwardness, and pain, and the tender shoots of a relationship.

It’s hard to over recommend.

Brilliant.

While many people may insist that they wish their dreams really would come true, this story reminds the reader that it might not always be a good thing. ‘My Dream Woman’ is a heartwarming, entertaining and quite fantastic tale of the power of dreams in the lives and destinies of those who have them.

The author has created a quite brilliant concept with the Guild of Dream Warriors and in doing so has opened up a whole new realm of potential for contemporary fantasy— one which the author has deftly and confidently made her own with the mystical and mysterious collection of characters who populate this story. Of course, nothing is perfect, and therein lies the complication that sets the plot of this delightful tale in motion.

The story is written in a familiar and relaxed tone that makes the reader feel as if they have known Andi, the central character, for much longer than just the time they’ve been reading. The story rolls on at a good pace, at some times lighthearted and amusing, and at other times suspenseful and intriguing, but always delivering twists that keep both the reader and the characters curious and engaged.

Once again, Cleiptt has produced a highly original and quirky story that has far more depth and meaning to it than just mere entertainment. As the assumptions, fears and instincts of the characters are explored, so are those of the reader, revealing truths that challenge the way in which one understands their own responses to life and the different people with whom we share it.

There is some adult content, so it’s not a book for younger readers, but it is a positive and empowering read that promotes understanding of different perspectives and orientations.

Having found so much to enjoy in this novella, it is very exciting to know there are two more books in the Guild of Dream Warriors series.

This is the first time I’ve experienced C.H. Clepitt, and I am happy to say it will not be my last! This book has so many things to love about it. As someone who personally has a vivid dream life, it was really fun to discover a new paranormal adventure set in the mysterious world of the dream universe. Pair that with the story being narrated by the fresh, charming voice of a delightful, queer main character, and you have a winner in my opinion!

I was excited to read this book. I loved the concept of entering dreams. I couldn’t put it down. Andi is just an average person with an amazing ability. She is so down to earth and sexy. I can’t wait to read the next book.

A lovely paranormal novella with a great representation of people with disabilities (MC in a wheelchair and rocking it).

I loved the premise, and the story was tight and well-written. The suspense was just enough to flesh out the story without overshadowing the hesitant romance.
I loved how the MCs built each other up and I agree - insecurity is indeed not sexy! Why do so many authors make it a thing? Well, this author took the bull by the horns and had her MC say it out front. And what do you know? It worked! The other MC actually listened. I'm afraid people will start thinking that communication is a key element in relationships… who knows what will happen next?

But seriously, I loved the honesty between the MC. I loved that the able-bodied MC didn't care about the wheelchair and instead immediately thought of a way to make her friend's life easier. I also appreciated the paranormal aspect. Despite it being only a novella it was thought out and executed very well. I would love to read more books in this realm and it seems this will become a series so YAY!

To sum up: great story, great characters, fun and short read. Enjoy!

T&T:
Tropes: fantasy becomes reality, dreams come true, femme/butch, rich/poor, weak to strong, supportive sibling and friends, saving the world
Triggers: homophobic parent, violence and death (physical altercation, knifes, swords, guns), nightmares come true

Audiobook won through Jae's Advent Calendar giveaway. Enjoyable short SF read, finished in one sitting. Interesting world-building. Good disability rep. I felt the connection between the POV character and her love interest. Lovely narrator. :) I'm interested in checking out where the series goes.

Brilliant. Gutted I only made it last three days. :( Delighted it's book one and book two came out this week. :) The kind of story I wish I'd written. Perfect for TV (it would be an amazing series).

I really enjoyed the writing style and as an LQBTQ member it was such a relatable character. My only complaint it that I wish it was longer, but glad to see that it was just book 1 of a series.

Lesbian dream warriors fighting the patriarchy with intersectional feminism and swords!

A friend on Twitter recommended I read this novella and I could not be more grateful that they did.
There is nothing about this book I didn't like. The characters provide representation for people who don't often see themselves in books. The two main characters are gay and one of them is gay AND a disabled woman of colour, there's a pansexual character, a character struggling with PTSD, a male survivor of abuse, and more.
The premise is so clever. A secret group of lucid dreamers have banded together to fight monsters in other people's dreams to keep them safe and happy from nightmares sent by folks with evil motives. But course the folks with evil motives need to be stopped at their source so our intrepid heroes must swoop in to save the day - with swords!
I loved this book because it's romantic, exciting, clever, and well-written.
I swallowed it whole in one sitting. I have been recommending it to everyone.
