You can do a lot in two months. An ex-portrait and the man who made a deal with Death both excel at this...possibly to the regret of everyone swept up in their wake.
Ends on a cliffie, followed by ANOTHER (32kw) book in the past. The jumping around in times in this series is really grating.
And so many things are not explained. Au contraire, the author takes diversity to mean someone “exotic” (girl, nōn-binary, dark-skinned, Japanese, Muslim, Hindu, prosthetic-wearing, …) must be in every other sentence; quite the imbalance to the in-story given figure of 30% nōn-English students (which includes the Scottish, Welsh, Irish and Manx students). I don’t mind diversity, I do mind it being shoved into my face Every. Other. Sentence. (Unpopular opinion, probably, but meh, live with it.)
Lots of interesting things going on, but the entire setup is still making it hard for the reader to find their feet in this story series.
More side characters come in to get a role, which is oddly satisfying. The Latin manages to get worse somehow, and for a while, everything looks pretty repetetive, but then we get open war, so I won't complain too much.
Also, it turns out one recurring character is (or: will be) the grandfather of Macbeth (once again mildly slaughtering the actual historical timeline by switching out father and son, but seeing as the very early Mormaers/Lords of Moray are not well accounted for, that's still pretty good for a fanfic).
