Blindsided: A Novel

Rate this book
A young woman encounters the killer she accused years earlier--and finds herself drawn back into a vortex of evil she thought she'd left far behind her.

A decade after Cadence Lawrence accused the perpetrator in the brutal murder of her high school friend, she's finally put the nightmare to rest. But the ghosts of her past won't rest, and an unexpected encounter with the killer reawakens demons she thought were long dead. Gripped by paranoia, Cadence fears she's being stalked, and suspects that the murderer has invaded the sanctity of her home. Could her chance encounter have rekindled the savage rage that claimed the life of her friend and now threatens Cadence herself?

Half-crazed with fear, Cadence takes flight, but instead of finding sanctuary, she runs headlong into one of the worst snowstorms to blast northern Wisconsin in years. Stranded, freezing, and alone, Cadence confronts her worst nightmare--until deliverance comes in the form of a stranger who rescues her and offers shelter from the blinding storm. But something is not altogether right with her savior, and Cadence is faced with another impossible dilemma. Should she trust this enigmatic stranger, or once again flee for her life? In the midst of an unrelenting storm, the walls are closing in on Cadence.

Blindsided by Kate Watterson has been a difficult read. Dr. Cadence Lawrence accidentally crosses paths with a man she had accused of murdering her best friend ten years before. Feeling like her life might be in jeopardy, she leaves her medical practice and her home, only to be snowbound in Wisconsin, where she is rescued by a handsome stranger who brings her to his country home. And that is when the plot becomes bogged down with inane dialogue and unrealistic storylines. The book blurb describes it as a thriller, which is what led me to read it. However, suspenseful romance best describes it. The plot promises an interesting murder mystery but, unfortunately, it evolves into an unrealistic romance. The dialogue often lapses into areas that have nothing to do with the story. If romance novels are your preference, you may enjoy this novel. Please note that this is only my opinion. Thank you to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Blindsided by Kate Watterson is a thriller that felt if at times it wanted to cross over into a romantic suspense read. The story is mainly told from the point of view of the main character, Cadence Lawrence, but there are times it will switch the point of view.

The story begins to unfold in the middle of a snowstorm on a dark and deserted road as we join Cadence as she runs from something. Cadence quickly finds herself stuck in the snow when her car breaks down but thankfully a man comes to her rescue before she freezes at the side of the road.

Invited to wait out the storm in the stranger’s cabin Cadence couldn’t help but be wary even through the kindness but as time passes she begins to share her story. A decade before Cadence had accused a man of murder and he had walked back into her life sending her on the run.

Blindsided by Kate Watterson was an easy to read thriller that when s tarting out I really thought I would be rating highly. However, this would be one that the further and further I get into it the more over the top or unbelievable I began to find the plot and the characters. In the end Blindsided ended up being around 2 1/2 stars for me despite the strong beginning.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Dr. Cadence Lawrence in running. She accidentally runs into the man who she is positive killed her high school friend 10 years ago. No one believed her then ... and no one believes her now.

But her cat has gone missing .... someone has been in her home ... she knows .... he's coming for her.

Fearful for her life, Cadence runs headlong into one of the worst snowstorms to hit in years. She's stranded, freezing and alone but help comes from an unexpected source... a stranger happens by.

Should she trust him?

This was not what I expected when I grabbed a copy of a Kate Watterson novel. Having read all her Ellie McIntosh series, I was eager to read what I thought was another one of the series. It is not ....

What I got was a well-written romantic suspense full of great characters with a few surprises thrown in the mix. The voices come from not only Cadence, but a female FBI Agent who is looking for a serial killer who has her own agenda, and the killer, as well.

Many thanks to the author / Crooked Lane Books / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this Romantic Suspense. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Blindsided by Kate Watterson
Cadence feels she is being stalked and her life is in danger so she takes off to distance herself, gets trapped in a snowstorm with a handsome stranger but eventually has to go back and deal with what's happening, Mick goes with her and the adventure begins.... This book had it all, romance, stalking, shootings, fires and murders. It reads well, characters are fleshed out and the story is interesting, may be a bit slow at times but all in all a good summer read!
Thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers Crooked Lane for this ARC and letting me give my opinion.

Ten years ago, when Cadence Lawerence was in high school and graduating with her best friend, they were living the life until her best friend went missing and her body was never found. Cadence accused her best friend's boyfriend at the time as she knew he had a temper and her friend was going to dump him that night. Now ten years later, she is with a friend in a doctor's office when she spots him. There is no way that she would never recognize him even after all these years. Spooked, she decides to take an impromptu absence of leave and drive to Wisconsin. On her way, her car breaks down, and she is picked up by a stranger who takes her to his cabin in the woods. During her time away, an FBI agent is trying to get ahold of Cadence as she has questions about the guy she accused of her friends murder as her daughter was also killed by the same man and now they have a string of deaths that could be all tied to the same guy and looks like everyone who has known him is now dead except for Cadence. Now that he has spotted Cadence, is he here to tie up loose ends as when she returns home it looks like someone is stalking her. Thank goodness, she now has her mountain man rescuer whom they have become close and started a romantic entanglement together. I did like how her friend's murder was solved eventually, but I had hoped that we would have seen more of this case in the book as it felt entirely overshadowed by the "new situation." If you are in the mood for an excellent female mystery/thriller writer in the same feel as Tess Gerritsen, Kendra Elliot then check out Kate Watterson today.

Firstly, thank you #NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC in exchange for an impartial review; all opinions are my own.

Normally I try not to give one-star reviews and try to find some redeeming factors to bump it up to a two. Unfortunately, there were just too many things that don't sit well with me.

What drew me initially was the fantastic blurb and the cover; the story itself started off strong but falls off pretty quickly.

All the characters in the book come off as dry, unrealistic and two-dimensional. I can understand how the romance aspect can be appealing to a certain reader; but given the plot dynamics - it all felt forced. It doesn't help that this carries on throughout the book at what seems inappropriate at times.

The mystery/thriller elements didn't cut it for me, outside of the first chapter there wasn't any sense of excitement for me throughout the book. The 'action' sequences felt really dull and the after all that - the big reveal at the end felt really deflated.
In retrospect, the part I most enjoyed was the police procedural elements.

That is to say, I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would've.
I'm probably not the intended reader for this.

If you're looking for a thriller/suspense/mystery novel that has some romance elements, look elsewhere.
If you're looking for a romance novel that has these elements, then this may be for you.

Blindsided for me, was more of a mystery than a thriller novel and that's not a bad thing at all, but I went in reading this book expecting it to be a thriller and it wasn't. That being said it was a nice mystery novel and it did have its creepy moments.

Cadence Lawrence's accuses her high school best friend's boyfrined for her murder, but has no evidence at all to back up that it is him. When she sees him in her office one day, she becomes paranoid and flees away, but gets caught in a snowstorm and ends up stuck in a house with a strnager who found her on the side of the road. Can she trust this stranger? Can she trust anyone?

In terms of mystery, I will say this one succeeded. What I enjoyed about this novel was the cold, isolated atmosphere that Watterson created for her readers andit felt like I was with Cadence in the stranger's home. I didn't really know if I could trust him because let's be honest it's a little crazy to follow someone home in the middle of a snowstorm, but it's not like Cadence had a choice. It was either that or freeze to death in her car, and she chose the latter. But has the stranger got her where he wants her?

I loved Cadence's determination in this book. She did not give up until she found out what happened to her friend and she did her best to find answers to her murder and to prove that it was in fact her ex-boyfriend who killed her. I did get creeped out during some scenes because if someone is watching you, who wouldn't be creeped out? Paranoia struck me too and kudos to Waaterson for that.

Overall a nice slow burning mystery novel, and a good one to read with a nice cup of hot chocolate by the fire.

Thank you to Crooked Lane Books for providing me with an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

"She had to get a grip on herself. There was no doubt about it. It had all been bad enough: her unplanned abrupt flight from Indy, the roundabout and unfamiliar route, the onslaught of the horrendous weather, and then having to place her trust in some strange man...but when the room had suddenly gone black, it had shaken her to the very core."....

Dirk murdered Cadence’s friend Melissa back when they were in high school. She made an accusation, but he wrangled his way out of it. Years pass, and an accidental run in with the accused killer starts a renewed fear in Cadence.

Is the killer stalking her now? Thinking she can put distant between her and Dirk, she is putting herself into more danger. Caught up in a blinding snowstorm and rescued by a stranger, can she trust him? Should she keep running? Where would she go in this storm? Has the killer followed her? All questions that will cause Cadence to doubt every move she makes.

From the other point of view, Mick has rescued a stranded woman and taken her into his home. She appears to be lying about things. Can he trust her? What is she running from? Are they both in danger now? Trapped in Mick’s home, a story unfolds giving the reader a view into their past. Can anyone really be trusted? Cadence and Mick will be “Blindsided” by the truth.

The book goes back and forth with a secondary storyline of those on the hunt for a killer. The man who murdered Cadence’s friend is out there somewhere. Will he be caught so that Cadence can return home safely? The snowstorm provides for a chilling backdrop to this story. I’ve always been fascinated by Mother Nature’s events.

The storms ends and the real danger begins. Someone has been in Cadence's home. An intense suspense from start to finish. I wasn’t sure who to trust. In the end a tad predictable. Well written, great characters.

Thank you Kate Watterson, Netgalley, and Crooked Lane Books.

I chose to read "Blindsided" by Kate Watterson as suspenseful thrillers are one of my favourite genres and I was so pleased that I didn't miss out on this great novel! As my first book by this author, I found it to be full of action and with a soupçon of romance to spice things up a little. I loved the fast pacing, and the well-written plot really caught my attention, keeping me engrossed in the story, throughout. The characters were fleshed out by Kate Watterson and there was certainly a few dramatic and suspenseful moments. Highly recommended and well worth five stars!

Although I normally enjoy and appreciate police procedurals, this one just plodded along without much suspense and little surprise. The blurb says ‘she finds herself drawn back into a vortex of evil...’, I wish she had.

I received an ARC of Blindsided by Kate Watterson from NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books. This in no way influenced my review. This is an honest review. This novel will be released July 9, 2019.

Summery
Cadence feels she is in danger from a man she knew all though school. In her 30's now she feels the need to flee her home to be safe, but she has no idea where she is driving to. Of course it has to be the worst snow storm and her car breaks down. She gets help from a passerby, Mick. She is reluctant to accept his help but feels she has no choice due to the conditions outside. Here she is stranded with this handsome man for days. In his cabin they have nothing to do but talk due to the snow store. During the time together they become very close. She tells him how she feels a man from high school Dirk, is after her because she knows he killed her friend. Yet she can't prove it.

Cadence and Mick travel back to Indiana where she lives. In attempt to try and track down Dirk. The hunt for a killer is on but who will be next? Will they prevail in the end? Will this be too much for Mick to take on?

Review
There is something to be said for reading a book with no prior knowledge of the Author or of the book. You can read it and have an unbiases opinion for it. This is my first book by Kate Watterson.

With that being said I did really enjoy the beginning. When Cadence was snowed in with the hunk Mick in his cabin. You wanted to see them get closer and fall in love. That's what books are made for. But once they left the cabin to face off with Dirk, the mass murder it fell apart for me. There were times when I couldn't follow along, I had no clue who was talking and had to go back and reread it to figure it out.

Mick was the knight in shinning armor and Cadence was a very independent woman who at times didn't want the knight. They are a cute couple and you do start to get attached to them. Once the book starts to pick up and Dirk is after Cadence so his secrets stay hidden you get reinvested in all charters. He is hell bent on stopping Cadence, the FBI and Mick from getting in his way.

If your looking for a thriller you will find it here. It has many good qualities, I just felt that the whole story could have been a little stronger.

I’m not sure what to think about this book. The plot had a lot of promise and I liked the characters, even though they were a little flat and one-dimensional. However, the story dragged on longer than necessary and I struggled to finish reading it. It felt like the book couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a romance or a suspense and fell short on both counts. The romance felt forced and contrived. From the moment they met, you knew they were going to end up together so there was no tension. As far as the suspense, after the first few chapters, there aren’t any surprises and it just plods along until the end. I really thought I would like this based on the blurb and was all set to give a rave review, but in the end, it was just okay.

I received a digital ARC of this book from Netgallet in exchange for an honest review. I very much appreciate the opportunity to read and review this book. The blurb and the cover had me excited, as it seemed like exactly the type of story for me.

Unfortunately, the actual novel is far too heavy on the romance and instalove for my taste, and too light on what is a fairly straightforward crime story with no real mystery or suspense.

It’s not a bad book by any means, but i was not the right reader for it. This would be better reviewed by someone who enjoys romance-heavy storylines.

This was an enjoyable read. I am in Texas and am dying to actually see some REAL snow, so I loved the setting of this story. The author did an excellent job of describing the scenery and making me feel as if I was actually there. The issues I had were it was a little slow at first, but definitely picks up and in a romantic/suspense novel, I prefer more suspense than romance. I would read more from this author.

Loved this book. It has just the right amount of romance mixed with a thriller. It kept me on the edge of my seat. I stayed up late to finish it. At first you only know Cadence Lawrence is running away from someone or something. Then gradually as she stays with her rescuer Mick you learn more of her story. It was an excellent read and I enjoyed it very much.

Romantic suspense is a rare breed of book these days, so I was excited to try this novel by an author who had written another book I enjoyed (Frozen). However, clunky writing, poor editing and two-dimensional, unrealistic characters made this a slog to get through.

Cadence Lawrence had never expected to see Dirk Lyons again so when she spots him in an OB/BYN office she is stunned. Back in high school, she had accused Dirk of killing his girlfriend. No one would believe her and instead agreed that Dirk's account of witnessing the young lady's abduction was true. When he left town Cadence thought good riddance and hoped he'd taken his troubles with him.

When her cat goes missing, when her home is broken into and when she feels herself being followed Cadence decides to take an impromptu vacation (even though she's a surgeon) to hopefully rid herself of Dirk, whom she is convinced is responsible. She heads to northern Wisconsin, ignoring the storm warnings on the radio and in the news.

Mick McCutcheon was determined to spend a few days at his cabin in Northern Wisconsin and ignored the storm warnings from the weather service, which is how he finds himself rescuing a pretty, blue-eyed blonde from her stalled vehicle. The two make a white knuckled drive to his cabin, barely making it before the roads become completely impassable. Once there, they start to fall in love.

There are a lot of laws regulating surgeons in most states including age restrictions, how many hours they can spend in surgery and how many procedures they can do in a day. Cadence taking an impromptu trip away from home would have been harder than it is made out to be. Mick is a Wisconsin regular and grew up in Minnesota and while we can be caught unprepared for storms, most of us wouldn't have been as unprepared as he was. Also, he would have had a) a gas powered snow blower b)a plow for the front of his truck or c) a riding mower with small snowplow attachment for that cabin. You don't plow out by hand unless you have a standard urban/suburban driveway or at least two or three other shovelers.

What bothered me most was the rogue FBI agent and the fact that the resolution of the crime involved at least three conversations where Cadence said the same thing over and over - she'd never liked Dirk and that's what made her think he killed her best friend. She does come up with a couple of excuses as time goes on but by then the damage was done. All the conversations were stilted and the mystery wasn't very good.

I'm glad people are still writing in this genre but readers deserve better.

I found this one to be an amazing suspense filled thriller.
We have a little bit of romance to add to the mix but it's only backburner type.
I really enjoyed this with all the twists and turns. I was gripped and couldn't stop reading til I got to the end.
The characters have been so very well written and thought out.

Highly recommend reading.

3.5 stars.

Blindsided by Kate Watterson is a fast-paced mystery.

Fleeing her stalker, Cadence Lawrence ignores the weather report and finds herself stranded in the midst of a heavy snowstorm.  Despite her uneasiness, she has no choice but to accompany her unexpected rescuer Mick McCutcheon to his upscale but rustic cabin.  Cadence trusts her instincts where Mick is concerned and she eventually opens up about why she left home. Mick feels protective of Cadence and once the roads are clear, he goes with her when she returns to her regular life. Still worried about her safety, Cadence agrees to meet with FBI Agent Thea Benedict and Detective Kirkland to discuss her long missing childhood friend Melissa Dewitt's cold case.  Certain the same man who is responsible for Melissa's disappearance is also her stalker, Cadence remains afraid for her life. Can Mick, Thea and Kirkland keep her safe? Or will she become his next victim?

Cadence is an orthopedic surgeon who has still not gotten over Melissa's disappearance thirteen years earlier. She is convinced Melissa's boyfriend, Dirk Lyons, murdered her when she tried to end their relationship.  The case has long grown cold but when Cadence accidentally crosses paths with Dirk again, she is certain he is stalking her.  When she stumbles across a listening device, Cadence grows even more fearful of his next move.

FBI Agent Thea Benedict is working at the behest of a Texas Congressman who is certain Dirk is involved with his daughter's unexplained disappearance. Thea is eager to work the case since she has her own reasons for locating Dirk.  Harboring suspicions Dirk might be a serial killer, she begins searching for other possible victims. Her research pays off and there is now  greater urgency to locate him. But Dirk has plenty of practice covering his tracks so Thea and Detective Kirkland cannot help but wonder if they will find him before he kills again.

The mystery aspect of the storyline is a bit overshadowed by Cadence's and Mick's burgeoning romance. Mick is a charming man and Cadence feels safe with him, but her independent nature is sometimes at war with his need to protect her.  Their relationship has an insta-love vibe to it since they do not know each other long before declaring their love to one another. They are a cute couple but the balance between romance and suspense is definitely tilted more toward their  newfound love especially since there really is not any mystery surrounding who is after Cadence.

Blindsided is an engaging mystery but some of dialogue is a little stilted and the characters could be better developed. The premise of the novel is interesting but the story lacks much suspense.  Without much fanfare, Kate Watterson brings the novel to a satisfying (but a bit predictable) conclusion. Enjoyable but definitely more romance than mystery.

I received this book for free from Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for a review. This review is in my own words and completely honest.

This is my first Kate Watterson book, and I fairly enjoyed it. The plot was solid. I was definitely digging that. Dr. Cadence Lawrence has just run into the man she accused of murder back in High School. He may or may not now be stalking her so she high tails it out of Indianapolis for a while and then, ends up stuck in a snow storm with Mick. Her now knight in shining flannel.
While I was all for the plot, I didn’t feel much for the characters. They felt very one dimensional. The dialogues started out pretty strong, but as the book continued it got weedy and unrealistic. I think on their own each character was strong, but once brought together it kind of fell apart a little.
I think with a little character developing, a bit of polish on the interactions between the characters and this could definitely be a 4 star contender.
I will say though that I completely thought this was a thriller, but it was definitely more of a romantic suspense I think. If you don’t like that genre definitely don’t go into it thinking it is straight up thriller.

For me, this was an enjoyable read, but didn't rise to the level of a strong, psychological thriller. It seemed at times to sway over to a romance novel with a little mystery. I would definitely read more from Kate Watterson - her characters were interesting and the story flowed well. Relaxing and enjoyable are the key descriptive terms that come to mind.

Mystery and Thriller? Not so much. I hate when books are basically mislabeled. This is definitely more chick lit romance with a bit of mystery thrown in. Fair enough, but why not just SAY it's romance-suspense.

Aside from being miffed that this wasn't what I expected, I liked the book well enough though it seemed to lose steam in the second half. Or maybe that was me who lost steam while looking for the thriller/mystery I never found.

I enjoyed this book although it wasn’t what I expected. There was no whodunnit which is what i normally go for, it was more of a romance with a bit of thriller tossed in. It just left me feeling kind of “meh”. Maybe because for the the two genres didn’t mesh well together.

I was originally drawn to this novel by the blub. The first chapter pulled me in. And then... I don't know what happened. Perhaps it was the fact that I was not expecting there to be a romantic aspect to this story (or that said romance would overshadow everything else), but that's what happened. I could have overlooked this, had the book been more suspenseful, but it wasn't. In fact I never even felt connected to the characters. I just didn't care about them or what happened to them. There were times when the plot boarded on unrealistic, when the characters seemed super human, and when overall, it just couldn't get out of its own way. There was no real build up to the story, it just sort of plodded along until it ended.

That being considered, I'm sure there are people out there to whom this book will appeal, it just wasn't for me.

2.75 Hearts was a difficult story to read. It has a lot of potential but it never really met it. I had a hard time connecting with the characters but especially Cadence. Many times I was reading and thinking “seriously, that wouldn’t/can’t happen that way” and it took me out of the story.

Just not a book I would recommend.

FBI SA Thea Benedict is tracking a serial killer who has disappeared women. Cadence is convinced Dirk, a high school acquaintance whose girlfriend vanished 10 years ago, is stalking her. Mick takes Cadence in when she's stranded in a horrible snow storm she ran into when she (unwisely) fled Indianapolis for Wisconsin (without a real plan in her head). Ah, the romantic suspense/chase thriller! Cadence makes a number of bad decisions but is falling for Mick so incredibly quickly one of them? Well, they do share a lot of information in a short time when they're snowed in. Mick, Cadence, and Thea team up to find out who the bad guy is. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. It's a quick read which sometimes tilts toward the implausible but fans of the genre will enjoy Watterson's writing.

This story kept me reading until finished. I started it about midday and had it finished well before bedtime, even with the many breaks life calls for -I’m a mom and wife, lots of breaks.

A little predictability in how this plays out, but it’s not boring and keeps you turning the page.

Grab it, read it, then let out that breath you’ve been holding.
