I discovered this book completely by accident, when I was tidying up in our store and found this lying around. Now, in the last year I’ve become increasingly interested in and charmed by birds, so it was a case if “the right book at the right time”. The book’s main appeal are undoubtedly its gorgeous pictures- the paintings of birds are stunning. But there’s also plenty of information about each bird, mixed with anecdotes from the author’s life. A lucky find for me and a great book for anyone who likes birds.

Ihana kirja! Akvarellipiirrokset eri linnuista ovat uskomattoman kauniita ja tietopuolikin kohdallaan. Taiteilijana kirjailija keskittyy ehkä hiukan liian yksityiskohtaisesti lintujen ulkonäköön ja väritykseen ja siihen miten vanhat linnut erottaa nuoremmista, jolla tuskin on suurta merkitystä aloittelevan lintubongarin kannalta. Jos itse erotan uroslinnun naaraasta niin se riittää vallan mainiosti. Tai kaksi lähellä olevaa lintulajia toisistaan. Kirjan luettuaan haluaa heti pystyttää lintulaudan tai ainakin pari talipalloa jonnekin jotta voisi tarkkailla talvehtivia lintuja. Harmi kyllä lintujen ruokinnasta on tehty suorastaan rikollista toimintaa - rottien houkutteluun vedoten - joten jos sinulla ei ole omakotitaloa ja omaa pihaa niin lintujen ruokintaan tuskin on mahdollisuutta. Muistan lapsuudestani vanhassa koiranheisipuussa olleen lintulautamme ja kuinka siellä oli jos jonkinlaista mielenkiintoista kävijää. Punatulkut olivat ehdottomia suosikkejamme mutta niitä näki suhteellisen harvoin. Helmikuussa koiranheisipuuhun laskeutui yleensä valtava tilhiparvi syömään marjoja. Hämmästelin kuinka linnut söivät marjoja jotka tiesin myrkyllisiksi. Myöhemmin luin lintukirjoista että linnut voivat syödä vaivatta sellaisia koska lintujen ruuansulatus on erilainen kuin ihmisillä. Välillä orava tunki itsensä kokonaan lintulaudan sisään niin että pää tuli toisesta päästä ulos ja pörröhäntä heilui toisessa päässä. Usein myös naapurista karannut lapinkoira kiskoi linnuille ripustetut läskinpalat suuhunsa. Kirjassa kerrotaan mikä ruoka millekin linnulle maistuu parhaiten ja millä voi mitäkin lajia houkutella pihalleen. Ne joilla on mahdollisuus tähän niin toimikaa niin. Itse joudun tätä nykyä tyytymään kaupunkiasujana varpusiin ja mustarastaisiin.

Este libro de ornitología ofrece una encantadora combinación de bellas ilustraciones y relatos personales del autor, quien narra sus encuentros con las aves invernales desde su propio jardín, en Suecia, cuyas especies son muy similares a las que avistamos en la península ibérica: carboneros, jilgueros, verderones, perdices, faisanes... Aunque los textos no se alejan demasiado de lo habitual en guías de aves, las anécdotas aportan un toque cálido y cercano. Un libro sencillo pero entrañable, ideal para disfrutar del arte y la observación de la naturaleza.

A book on winter birds in Scandinavia, illustrated by the most aesthetic water colours/lithographies of Lars Jonsson. I read this book a little at a time, which worked out quite nicely considering each bird is given only a few pages. Very informative, while retaining an artistic viewpoint with respect to colours.

En cambio, el texto se queda en segundo plano, más como una excusa para dar cabida a tan bellas creaciones artísticas. Narrativamente, la obra merece un 6, mientras que en lo visual alcanza un 10.

Huippukirja, varsinkin vesivärimaalausta ja lintuja harrastaville. Mukavasti höpinöitä ja asiaa. Larssin vaivattoman oloinen mutta myös syvästi analysoitu ja kokemuksen tuoma varma vesiväritekniikka resonoi ainakin minussa. Rakkaus luontoon ja maalaukseen välittyy vahvasti.

This book is a trip to my protected, cosy childhood days for me. The reason I became a biologist can be found in my early youth. When I was a little kid, I had fontal sinusitis for a couple of weeks in winter. Apart from an constant head age, I was terrible bored all day long, not allowed to go to school, which was good, but I was also not allowed to go outside. which was not so good. Then, one day, I started to observe the birds that were visiting the bird feeder on our terrace. And voila, not so bored any more. I learned to determine them all, I even recorded their songs with an old tape recorder and made my first mix tape with the voices of the winter birds in our garden. Even designed a label for the tape. So yeah, I became quite obsessed with this little feather balls that were clambering about in the bushes.
Lars Jonsson is not only a terrific artist, but also quite a famous ornithologist in Europe. He is considered as one of the best illustrators for bird field guides. and his field guide about the birds of Europe is a long time classic. This book, although not a field guide sensu stricto, but rather an art book with short stories about Swedish winter birds is as beautiful as it is informative. Although I guess Mr. Jonsson never had fontal sinusitis, he also became obsessed with birds that visit his feeding stations in winter. He observes and draws them and tells some charming, little facts about them.
So, if you want to learn that bullfinches love weed seeds, find out why the black bird is the national bird of Sweden, that even birds regarded as disgusting like an common pigeon have aesthetic aspects, learn about the ability of spotted nutcrackers to memorise all their secret winter food stashes, even under deep snow, the social behaviour of all kinds of corvids, that great tits have longer beaks in spring and willow tits are equipped with an internal thermostat and why long-tailed tits are so unbelievable cute and....and...
See, there are so many details about birds in winter. There are even trolls in this book! Disguised as pine grosbeaks! You are not interested in these little details? Then at least you can admire the amazing drawings. If you are not interested in any of the above things, then you must be as bored as me when I had fontal sinusitis, before I found out about the world outside, inhabited by fluffy feather balls and other wonders.

Gida ornitologiko oso berezi bat da Jonssonek idatzi duen hau. Hegaztien bizimodu eta ibilerak izugarri ondo ezagutzen dituen aditu batek idatzitako testu gozagarriak. Natura behatu, maite eta ulertzen duenaren begiradarekin idatzitako testu zehatzak. Eta horrekin batera, marrazki bikainak.
Marrazkien xehetasunak harrigarriak dira, hegaztien begirada, izaera, lumadia, kolore-tonuak... Jonssonek berak aipatzen duen bezala, hegaztien esentzia jasotzen saiatu da irudi hauetan. Edizio landua, hainbat datu jakingarri hegazti arruntenen (eta ez hain arrunten) bizitzaz eta irudi gozagarriak. Patxadaz irakurtzeko opari ederra.
