Kelly Jackson Mystery #5

Murder at the Marina

Rate this book
She’s got to solve this—or her friends are sunk . . .

Kelly Jackson, manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast, is fond of the Doblinsky brothers, Ivan and Rudy, members of the Silver Sentinels, a crew of crime-solving senior citizens in their Northern California seaside hamlet. After she discovers a jewel-encrusted dagger—with what appears to be dried blood on the blade—on their fishing boat, they share their family history with Kelly, and she learns that the knife may be part of a set from their long-ago childhood in Russia. Its sudden reappearance is eerie, but the mystery grows much more serious when a body is found on the boat. The victim was staying at Kelly’s inn, in town for a Russian Heritage Festival, and some of the organizers were clearly harboring some bitterness. But the story behind this murder seems as layered as a nesting doll—and Kelly’s feeling completely at sea . . .

The 5th book in the Kelly Jackson Mystery series by Janet Finsilver. Kelly Jackson is the manager of Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast. With her job, she has had the opportunity to meet many of the locals and get involved with events in the community. Some of her favorite people are members of the Silver Sentinels, a group of crime-solving senior citizens. Kelly has has gotten to know the members when she was also sleuthing in various local crimes.

In this book, a mystery first arises when a jewel encrusted knife is found aboard the boat belonging to two of the Silver Sentinels, brothers Ivan and Rudy. As Kelly helps the brothers, she learns about their family history. Also, the mystery gets more complex when a dead body is found.

A delightful cozy mystery series. Charming setting. Interesting characters. Entertaining plot. A nice addition to this series.

I received a free eARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Kelly Jackson and the Silver Sentinels are back in the fifth installment of the Kelly Jackson Mystery series. This has been a very entertaining series. It is set in a charming small town setting in California and the characters are just as inviting as the location. This time around, the Silver Sentinels have to help two of their own - Rudy and Ivan who are in the middle of a murder mystery. I really enjoyed getting to know Rudy and Ivan as characters as well as their backstory. The Russian aspect of this story was interesting and entertaining. Rudy and Ivan get some closure from their past as well. The character development is on track and Kelly has become a very relatable, interesting and highly likable character. The mystery in this story was well done and as with the previous books kept me guessing until the end. This one had a climatic reveal which had me turning pages faster to make sure everything turned out as I had hoped.

I will definitely be back for more books in this series. Once I dive into one of these stories I just want to continue until I am finished. For me, a sign of a good book and a successful series.

I voluntarily read a digital ARC provided to me by the publisher, Lyrical Underground, through Netgalley.

I always enjoy a trip back to Redwood Cove to visit with Kelly Jackson and all her friends. I just love the Silver Sentinels, the senior group of sleuths that always helps solve cases in Redwood Cove. They all have their individual parts, a lot of which includes internet research. It was fun to see Kelly and Scott get a little bit closer. I liked learning a little more about the Doblinsky brothers, Ivan and Rudy, who were also part of the Silver Sentinels. They got to reconnect with some family, and their own little family of Sentinels was more than determined to get to the bottom of the murders that happened.

I love how these books always include normal life as well as the main mystery--and they do a really nice wrap-up at the end. Deputy Bill Stanton was training a bloodhound named Gus who liked to come to the Inn and play with Fred, Tommy's basset hound. Tommy was so interested in teaching Fred how to track like Gus, that he looked it all up online and was practicing with his friend Allie. The scene with Scott teaching Kelly how to make an apple pie was really funny. I hope they do eventually get together, but Scott is so sweet in giving Kelly all the space she needs after her nasty divorce. I'm always anxious for the next book in this series!

Murder at the Marina by Janet Finsilver is another excellent addition to the Kelly Jackson mystery series. I always enjoy my visit to Redwood Cove with Kelly and the Silver Sentinels. Kelly, Helen, Mary, Gertie, Professor, Rudy and Ivan are all people that I want to call friends.

Ms. Finsilver's descriptive writing always allows me to feel like I'm right there with Kelly in each book. This time she provides the history for two of the Silver Sentinels, Rudy and Ivan. The book highlights friendships and family. The plot was quickly paced with more than one mystery to solve, only a few suspects, enough twists that kept me guessing (I guessed wrong) and a very surprising reveal.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Lyrical Underground via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

Murder at the Marina may be the fifth A Kelly Jackson Mystery, but it can be read as a standalone. The author provides the necessary background information for new readers. Kelly Jackson loves her job as the manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast. She has made some good friends and has a budding romance with Scott Thompson who manages the Redwood Cove Community Center. Kelly is a friendly character who continues to develop in each story. She is trying to get over her trust issues with men and she is learning how to cook. Scott decides to give her a baking lesson which gave me the giggles. After an incident with flour, she tells Scott that he “would make a very distinguished Silver Sentinel”. The Silver Sentinels are a diverse group of older men and women who each bring a different talent to the group. I hope we get to learn more about each member as the series progresses. I thought Murder at the Marina was well-written with steady pacing which made for an easy to read story. I enjoyed getting to know more about Rudy and Ivan Doblinsky. I believe readers will be surprised at their heritage. I found the Russian aspects of the story very interesting. I delighted in the descriptions of the Cossack riders and their demonstration. I thought the mystery in this edition was more complex. The conclusion of the whodunit was just fabulous and had me quickly flipping the pages of my e-reader. It is an action packed reveal which I just loved. Helen, Tommy, Allie and the dogs add to this charming cozy mystery. Gus and Fred, the two dogs, are adorable and clever. I could have done without the case details being repeated (seems like Kelly would get information, share with Deputy Bill Stanton, then with Silver Sentinels). Murder at the Marina combines murder, a Russian dagger, senior sleuths, a nosy B&B manager, Cossack riders and a helpful hound into one diverting cozy mystery.

Do you like history? Want to know about the breakup of RUSSIAN Mobility? The fifth book of the Kelly Jansen series will help enlighten you. Kelly is preparing to welcome the Russian Heritance Week to the Red Cove area. Rudy and Ivan Dobliksky, members of Silver Sentinels and have of Russian background. The book covers their backstory and the Russian mob. There is a good description of the Russian Cossacks maneuvers.
Kelly learned about the bloody dagger ground the Dobliksky's fishing boat. A couple of days later a dead body and a good coin are found on the boat. There is a major turn in the direction of the tale that will have you wondering until the book is done. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND SERIES.

Another wonderful addition to "A Kelly Jackson Mystery". Kelly and the Silver Sentinels have another mystery to solve during another special event. This story highlights Russian brothers, Rudy and Ivan. It is the Russian Festival gearing up when a coin dealer that the brothers deal with is found dead. There is also a knife with blood on it found on the deck of their boat, "The Nadia". Not wanting their friends and fellow sentinels arrested for a murder they know they couldn't have committed, the team gears up for another investigation. There is also another mystery solved in this story that is personal to the brothers.

The Silver Sentinels do another wonderful job with this mystery. One of the things I like about these mysteries is that they work in conjunction with the police and share everything they learn. There are several suspects and I changed my mind several times about who I thought the culprit was. There were several red herrings and clues dropped along the way, that had me guessing. I always enjoy the final showdown in this series and this one was no exception, Kelly is once again in danger, but not as serious this time. I really enjoyed learning about the history of Russian settlers along the east coast of the US. It was also great to get to know more about two of the characters in this series. The story was well-written, the plot well-developed and the setting and wonderful characters make this series enjoyable. Throw in a couple of children and animals and this book has a bit of something for everyone. I was able to listen to the audiobook of this one, narrated once again by Reba Buhr. As I have stated before Reba Buhr uses various accents and inflection to voice the various characters which makes it easy to identify who is speaking. There were a lot of Russian characters in this book and she did a nice job with that accent, although differentiation was not as easy. I am looking forward to continuing to listen to this series. She has become the voice of Kelly Jackson and her friends for me.

I am trying to get caught up with this series again as I had fallen behind and now I am almost caught up again. I picked this one up when I was in the mood for another cozy mystery. This continues to be fun cozy mystery series and I like spending time with these characters as they solve another mystery.

This time the mystery has a Russian theme and the focus is on Rudy and Ivan, two members of the crime solving group the Silver Sentinels and friends of Kelly. When a knife coated in what appears to be blood is found on Rudy and Ivan's boat they become involved in another mystery. The knife discovered is followed by a body not much later and Kelly and the Silver Sentinels will have to figure out whose behind it. There were some interesting directions the story took and some interesting reveals when it comes to Rudy and Ivan's backstory and history.

I liked the different focus of this mystery, this time with the focus being on Rudy and Ivan and their Russian heritage. We meet some other Russian characters and a Russian Heritage Festival is taking place close to town. I liked the Russian theme in this book and it was a decent mystery. Although there were times it didn't grip me as much as it felt like for a long time they weren't really getting anywhere in terms of clues. I didn't really had any good guesses for suspects or motives as it didn't really seem connected for a while. I did like the mystery of whether the events were related or not. When they do make progress things move forward fast suddenly. It did feel a bit accidental how they figure out who is behind it, because the killer is coming for them not because they puzzled it out. But it was a nice wrap up and seeing it all fall on it's place.

I like how this series has such a big and close group of characters. It's fun to read about these characters and how they help each other. Kelly is there for the Silver Sentinels and I liked the scenes where she helped Rudy and Ivan in this book. It also was nice to see her appreciate Helen's work as there were plenty of times when she had to go somewhere and Helen had to take over. Or how she did some things for other characters like bringing someone or something somewhere to save someone else time. As well as how motivated she was to solve the mystery for the Russian brothers. There is a very slow burn romance that progresses very slow throughout the series. There are a few scenes with Scott and I like how they're growing closer, although the baking scene fell a bit flat for me instead of being funny.

To summarize: This was another great installments. I liked the Russian theme for this mystery with the Russian brothers Rudy and Ivan being involved as the body and a knife is found on their boat. There is a Russian heritage festival and the victim and several suspects seem to be involved with that. I liked the reveals surrounding Rudy and Ivan's history and their backstory. The mystery was interesting, but at times didn't fully grip me or move as fast. It felt for a long time they weren't getting anywhere and they solve the mystery by accident when the murderer goes after them. I like the big fun cast of characters and how close they are and how willing to help one another. I like following these characters throughout the series as they solve one mystery after another.

Murder at the Marina is the fifth book in Janet Finsilver’s Kelly Jackson Mystery series. This series takes place in a small town on the coast of Northern California with caring, well developed, and engaging characters. The well-plotted storyline flows at a steady pace, and the complex mystery and multiple murders keep the reader engaged and guessing. As with the other books in this series, there are multiple mysteries woven throughout the book, and in the end, everything comes together nicely.

Kelly Jackson is the manager of Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast and loves her job, the people she works with, and the community she lives in. Everyone is gearing up for the upcoming Russian Heritage Festival and Kelly, who grew up on a ranch and loves horses, is especially looking forward to watching the Cossack riding team and their horses perform. When a bejeweled dagger with what appears to be blood on the blade, and later the body of Alexander Koskov, are found on Rudy and Ivan Doblinsky’s fishing boat, Kelly schedules a meeting of the Silver Sentinels. Kelly is an honorary member of the Silver Sentinels, a wonderful group of five senior citizens, including Rudy and Ivan, who love to solve mysteries and are great at sorting through information and finding relevant facts. Rudy explains to Kelly that he and Ivan share a birth mother, but that he’s a member of an aristocratic Russian family, the son of a prince with two half-siblings, and that their father gave three valuable daggers to them. He further explained that his family separated when they fled Russia, with plans to meet in San Francisco, but were unsuccessful in reuniting, and that he doesn’t know where the other daggers are. He still has his dagger and shows it, along with a bejeweled case with two empty spots, to her. The Silver Sentinels diligently work to clear their friends and share their information with Deputy Sheriff Bill Stanton.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

The newest addition to this cozy mystery series will not disappoint fans as we follow Kelly during her sleuthing again. Things start pretty smooth with excitement for an upon my Russian festival. Then we get an expensive dagger covered in what looks like blood followed by dead bodies all found on Ivan and Rudys' boat at the marina. If course Kelly finds herself neck deep in the discoveries for the most whether she wants to or not. I enjoy following the development of the clues all gathered and organized by the group dedicated to helping her. The eclectic mix of characters provide a nice balance topped with what sounds like delicious food that will the reader entertained. Perfect for fans of cozies. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Strange things are happening in Redwood Cove and it will take both law enforcement and a group of local sleuths to get to the bottom of things. First there's a jewel encrusted dagger that looks like one kept by two gray haired brothers who were smuggled out of Russia as young children, and later a dead body has ties to the old men. Along the way the reader learns about the Russian aristocracy, Russian heritage celebrations, Cossack riding skills, and how a real Russian samovar is properly used. The mystery itself is well done and has just enough twists and red herrings, the characters are interesting and engaging, and the scenery and activities are clearly depicted. I loved it!

This might be my favourite book in the Kelly Jackson series. I love the California inn setting and the series 'regulars' who make these stories so memorable for me. Kelly, who manages the inn, is assisted in her sleuthing by the 'Silver Sentinels', a group of crime solving senior citizens. Loved that this time the mystery involved the Doblinsky brothers who are much loved part of the group. Great mystery, with lots of intriguing twists and some lovely Russian culture to add to the ambiance.

The past and present collide in Redwood Cove with the start of the Russian Heritage Festival. Kelly Jackson manages the Redwood Cove B&B and is an 'not yet silver' member of the Silver Sentinels, a group of senior men and women who assist the police in various investigations. All that is on Kelly's mind right now is the festival and her invitation to go on board the Nadia, the boat owned by Ivan and Rudy, Russian immigrant brothers. and members of the Silver Sentinels. Their family fled Russia in the early 1940's, splitting into two groups. Ivan and Rudy joined their uncle and lost contact with the rest of their family. When a jeweled dagger - one of three known by the brothers to exist - covered in blood is found on the Nadia, the brothers recognize it - but it isn't their dagger. How did it get there and will it lead to answers about their family? Not long afterwards, the body of a local antiques dealer is found on the Nadia and the police focus their investigation on the two brothers. The dealer bought and sold Russian antiques and that ties to Ivan and Rudy.
Kelly and the Silver Sentinels are ready to investigate and the reader learns a lot about Russian history and the ties to Northern California forts. I found it fascinating, making this mystery very satisfying.with a tension filled ending. The characters are well developed and are people I wouldn't mind spending more time with. Add a couple of great dogs and I'm hooked. If you are new to this series, no worries, it stands on its own very well.
My thanks to the publisher, Lyrical Underground and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Kelly and the Silver Sentinels are at it again in the 5th installment of the Kelly Jackson mystery series. Kelly is the manager of the Redwood Cove B&B and is fond of all of the Silver Sentinels a group of senior citizens that help the police solve crimes. This time around Kelly goes to the marina to see Ivan and Rudy Doblinsky’s boat the Nadia. When she arrives they brothers are not there but she sees what looks like a rare knife covered in blood. She calls the police and Sheriff Bill Stanton arrives then the brothers. The knife looks familiar to Rudy but it is not his. He shares with both Kelly and Bill the backstory of how he and Rudy came to America from Russia. Rudy was the son of a Russian prince and as trouble was brewing in Russia in the 1940’s the family split up with Rudy and Ivan coming with their Uncle and their half sister and half brother traveling with their Mother and the prince. All three siblings of the prince have a knife but Rudy cannot explain how it ended up on his boat as they had searched for their family forever. Could they still be alive? Well this occurs at the same time as the Russian Heritage festival is about to begin and tensions are running high amongst the organizers. One of the organizers Alexander who was instrumental in moving the festival from the Fort to Redwood Cove and closer to his Russian store. Alexander buys and sells Russian antiques and the next day his body if found dead on the Nadia and Ivan and Rudy are suspects in his murder as Rudy had sold gold coins to him. Kelly and the sentinels begin their investigation and Rudy and Ivan’s lost family is found and there are links to the Russian Mob to Alexander as well as some of the other organizers of the festival. This was a great read and I enjoyed all the history of Ivan and Rudy’s family as well as the description of the Cossack Riding team. You could just imagine you were there with Kelly watching their performance. The ending is fantastic and the love of all the silver sentinels and Kelly is so apparent. A strong mystery with lots of red herrings and the love of friends of family makes this a 5 star winner.

The fifth installment in the Kelly Jackson mystery series brings back Kelly Jackson, new manager and new to Redwood Cove and her bed and breakfast. Returning secondary characters include the Silver Sentinels, who have become instrumental in providing support for Kelly in her sleuthing missions in the remote northern California area. She and Helen, her main staff member providing meals and snacks, are preparing for the Russian Heritage Festival. Ivan and Rudy, two of her Silver Sentinels, are part of the local Russian community. They have been trying to get Kelly down to the marina to see their fishing vessel but when she arrives before they do, she notices something inside the galley that appears to be a bloodied jewel-encrusted dagger.

After bringing in her burgeoning romantic interest, the local deputy sheriff Bill Stanton, events begin to escalate and soon a body is found on the boat as well, leading suspicions to the boat owners, the Russian brothers. Apparently the brothers have quite a store of treasures brought with them, and were hoping to reconnect with family after arriving in San Francisco. The knife is part of a set, but the dagger found on their boat is not from their holdings.

With two of their own under suspicion, the crime-solving seniors, along with Kelly will proceed to investigate their Russian history, valuables, and links back to San Francisco. Helen takes up the slack and fills in with foods, snacks, and desserts when they meet at the Redwood Cove B&B.

I really enjoyed the Russian history as well as the festival highlights, foods (baklava--yum!), dancing, and the Cossack riding team, imagining their magnificent costumes and precision equestrian presentation. The author has a good knowledge base of horses as well as dogs!

This is a fun well-paced cozy, with compelling characters, and location. I was given the ebook download by the publisher and NetGalley for this blog tour and appreciate the opportunity to read and review.

Murder at the Marina is the fifth installment in the Kelly Jackson Mystery series set in Northern California and featuring Kelly Jackson, Manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast. The town is gearing up for Russian Heritage Week and with several wealthy Russian businessmen staying at the B & B, Kelly is quick to learn that tensions are running high between some of the organizers.

Kelly is invited to visit the fishing boat of Ivan and Rudy Doblinsky, two of the members of the Silver Sentinel group, the small group of Redwood senior citizens devoted to solving crimes. When Kelly arrives at the Nadia, she decides to wait on deck for the brothers and is shocked when looking through the cabin window she sees a jewel encrusted dagger covered in what appears to be blood.

Not long after the dagger is discovered, a body is found on the boat with a valuable Russian coin.
Teaming up with the other members of the Silver Sentinels, Deputy Bill Stanton and his bloodhound, Gus - Kelly sets out to clear the brothers and soon discovers the family secret Ivan and Rudy have kept hidden.

A fast paced plot with well developed returning characters. It's always a pleasure to spend an afternoon with Kelly, the Redwood Cove staff and the Silver Sentinels. In addition to the mystery the author also weaves in interesting facts about Russian culture.

I received an advanced copy of Murder at the Marina from NetGalley via Lyrical Underground, a division of Kensington Publishing. While not required to write a review I am more than happy to offer my honest opinion.

Kelly Jackson grew up on a Wyoming ranch enjoying barrel racing, but moved to Redwood Cove in Northern California where she manages the Redwood Cove B&B and is an honorary member of the Silver Sentinels, a group of senior citizens who solve crime to help their community. In this cozy mystery they are called on to help two of their own, the Russian brothers Rudy and Ivan, who have a cloud of murder over their heads.

This book is replete with Russian culture and some history as the area hosts the Russian Heritage Festival. We also learn of the aristocratic family background of the brothers. The most fun and exciting part of the story is the inclusion of a remarkable Cossack riding team. I felt like I was right there watching their amazing feats. There are many possible suspects, and danger lurks in surprising places. I could read the book again just for the fun and entertainment of the last third, which would be meaningless without the development that occurs in the first part of the book. If you enjoy watching an investigation unfold, read Janet Finsilver’s Murder at the Marin where there are many pathways to the truth and clues for the sleuths to chart as they track down the murderers.

I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Lyrical Underground (Kensington Press) for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kelly is adjusting to life in Redwood Cove and spending time with the Doblinsky brothers getting to visit them on their boat the Nadia. While waiting for them Kelly finds a dagger with something on it. Obviously someone is out to cause trouble from Ivan and Rudy.

As the Russian Heritage Festival preparations get underway another mishap happens when a body is found on the Nadia. It turns out to be a local store owner Alexander Koskov who also helps Russians get money for rare valuables. Who killed Alexander and why?

Kelly decides it's time to rally The Professor, Rudy, Ivan, Gertie, Mary the notorious Silver Sentinels. The group has solved a slew of murders up to this point so why not help out on of their own? They jump right in to help one of their own!

What I love about this series is there really isn't a thing wrong with the series. It pulls you in and has you gripping until the story is over. The group works fabulous and they get things done in their own way!

This book also was great for those who love Russian History especially those of royal stature. It had you pulled hearing Ivan and Rudy's story. There was so much to enjoy with it. Another fabulous adventure for anyone who loves this series and cozies in general!

OH MY WORD!!! how have I missed such a wonderful series of books, I came in with this one and when I started reading I didn't even stop to eat! This is a must have read with a fantastic mix of characters!

Kelly and her team are helping out the local Russian Festival by providing a) rooms and b) conference facilities, at one of the conferences Kelly over hears a rather heated exchange, which comes back to haunt her after one of the arguers is found dead, the problems arise when two of the Silver Sentinels (the five crime solving senior members, Kelly is not yet a full member as she has yet to have silver hair!) have links, a dagger was found on their boat and now the dead man. Kelly, the rest of the Silver Sentinels and even the Deputy Sheriff are beyond certain that neither Ivan or Rudy have anything to do with either problem, but it seems someone is determined to involve them one way or another. Now all the Silver Sentinels (and Kelly) will need to find out what really happened and why so that Ivan and Rudy can have some peace again, oh and so that the festival can go off without a hitch as well!

I received a free copy of MURDER AT THE MARINA (A Kelly Jackson Mystery Book 5) by Janet Finsilver in exchange for an honest review. Kelly Jackson, manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast and honorary member of the Silver Sentinels, is busy with guests for the upcoming Russian Heritage Festival. Kelly and the Silver Sentinels are called into action when the boat belonging to Ivan and Rudy Doblinsky, two of the Silver Sentinels, becomes the centerpiece for intrigue and murder. First, there was the fabulous dagger clad in precious gems and fake blood. Who left it there and why? Next, there is a murder at the marina. Who killed the victim, why, and is the murder linked to the relic?

I enjoyed this book as I have the prior novels in the Kelly Jackson series. I look forward to the next novel. The characters are engaging, and there is always something interesting going on at Redwood Cove during the investigations. I would recommend this to fans of cozy mystery series.

The core group of characters again work together to solve a mystery. This time the Doblinsky brothers ask their friends the Silver Sentinels for help. Having them be central to this book’s mystery allows for learning about their family background.

Appearing again are Daniel, Helen and their kids. Of course all the Sentinels are here. Deputy Sheriff Stanton appears to be getting closer to Helen. Kelly may be getting nearer to letting down her defenses with Scott. Corporate executive Michael isn’t seen but his presence is felt in a most important way.

As in all the books in the series so far, the author builds the story around a community event – for a small town they throw a lot of big time festivals. Here the author weaves in extensive research of Russian culture. What I hadn’t noticed until I visited the author’s website is that each book also highlights a different kind of working dog: hearing assistance, pest detector, a tracking dog. That is a lot of extra research the author devotes to this series to give it just a little something extra.

Kelly Jackson and the Silver Sentinels find themselves helping two of their own, Russian brothers Ivan and Rudy. As preparations kick into high gear for the Annual Russian Heritage Festival, an historic and valuable jeweled dagger is found on Rudy and Ivan’s boat, the Nadia. Not long after a local Russian business man is found dead on the boat and a second body shows up in the same spot not long after.

While no one believes the brothers are guilty, they are on the suspect list and the Silver Sentinels are back in business as they try to figure out who has brought murder to Redwood Cove yet again.

The Russian history and tie to royalty added additional intrigue to this story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. You don’t want to miss this series, and if you haven’t ready one yet, this is a great place to start as it is great as a standalone and a first introduction to the Redwood Cove, Kelly, and the gang.

This was a very interesting story with a little bit an Anastasia feel to it. A small coastal town with strong Russian roots, a few mysterious deaths, Russian antiquities, a group of mature sluethers, and our intrepid B&B host and former barrel rider Kelly Jackson. Kelly is a great character very warm and realistic. I love that more and more books are embracing the idea of an older group of citizens who take it upon themselves to solve who-done-its with the help of the able bodied main character. I also enjoyed the multi thread story lines that crossed and in some cases tied up into nice little bows. The plot kept me guessing until the very end and I still didn't have it completely figured out but it made complete sense. I can't wait to see what Kelly cooks up at her next lesson with the handsome and talented chef Scott.

I totally enjoyed the 5th book in this series. It just keeps getting better. We learn a lot about Ivan and Rudy, two members of the Silver Sentinels. Of Russian descent, their back story of early life and a family separated and torn apart is intriguing. A mystery and two murders, with Rudy being a suspect has the other Sentinels frantically searching for clues. Add in a Russian Heritage Festival, some very unsavory characters, not to mention more of a budding romance for Kelly and Scott and you have a fast paced, entertaining read.

I laughed, cried and loved what for me, felt like a fairy tale ending. Only one more book in this series. I do hope there are more to come. I will definitely savor the next book and having read them all, the characters now seem like old friends. Kudos to the Author! 🥰🥰

What friends are for

Kelly is invited to visit “Nadia”, Rudy and Ivan’s boat; when she arrives ahead of them, she discovers a fancy knife covered in what looks like blood on the table inside the cabin. Anxious for her friends, she locates the key and goes in to explore, worried about finding her friends injured or worse. No one is onboard, thankfully, and Deputy Stanton is swift in arriving; soon after, Rudy and Ivan also arrive. Events unfold after that, leading to the owner of the knife, a reunion of long-lost family, an exhibition of Cossacks and their horse-riding skills, a couple of murders, and oh yeah, a Russian ball. Involved in all of that, Kelly and her friends, the Silver Sentinels, uncover the truth behind the murders and the seemingly bloody knife, bringing events to a head in dramatic fashion.

This is one of the first books I've read in the cozy mystery genre. This was fairly short, but still long enough to present a nice, twisty plot with multiple suspects and motives. I've not read the others in the series, but was able to follow the story and the characters just fine.
I loved the dogs in the story - I'm partial to hounds :) The story line of the dogs being trained for searching for a suspect was interesting and I wish it had played a bigger part in the story as a whole. I also liked the two kids in the story and would like to have seen them have more interacting w/ the main characters.
Don't read this book if you are hungry - there are so many descriptions of yummy desserts. You'll be wanting to try them all.

A Russian Heritage festival in Redwood Cove opens a can of worms for Kelly and the Silver Sentinels, a band of "mature" sleuths. Who knew Rudy and Ivan Doblinsky are members of Russian nobility? Well, everyone does when a Russian businessman in town for the festival is found dead on their boat. Oh, and he was staying at Kelly's B&B. And there's the dagger! Then there's another murder. You'll be fine reading this as a standalone. The Silver Sentinels are a hoot and it's good to see a group of seniors figure so prominently. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A little light Russian history, a good series of twists, and fun characters make this a good read.

Murder at the NoCal Russian Festival
This is the fifth book in a series and the first that I have read. This stands alone well and it was a smooth transition for a new reader. This story is so interesting! I was aware of the Russian history along the Pacific coast and have visited some of the forts. This story filled in more of that history. It is also a nicely complicated murder mystery. There is a nicely tangled pool of suspects and many are intertwined through business. It is a sweet and clean cozy with dogs, horses, the ocean and good friends. I will be reading the rest of this series soon! I received the ARC of this book for free from Net Galley. This is my honest review.

I really enjoyed the last book in this mystery series, and I know authors put their heart and souls in keeping their stories going with the characters we love. Unfortunately this entry didn't feel as strong to me. As we were able to visit with Kelly and our favorite Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast in the lovely San Francisco Bay Area again, I just felt like this storyline was a bit forced and not as strong of a plotline as in past stories. This won't keep me from continuing to read, but I just didn't connect to the characters as much in this russian themed storyline. I'm sure many faithful readers will enjoy. Thanks for allowing me an early review through NetGalley.

I received a free eARC from NetGallery in exchange for an honest review.

Cosy mysteries hold a special place in my heart. I love them all equally! Or so I though, till I read this one.
From the first pages I quickly found myself swept up in the story, eager to find out who could be trying to frame these sweet Russian brothers. Kelly was a great main character, tough and yet normal in a good way, making it so easy to feel like her adventures were mine!
This was such a good book, I've already started to recommend it to people!
One of the best cozy mysteries out there and I can't wait to read the next one!
