12 Rules For Jiu Jitsu is a commentary on Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules For Life and how these lessons are applicable to using Jiu Jitsu as a vehicle for personal development.
I hesitate to say much with this review, because frankly at one level this book is like the feeling of riding my Harley through the light and shadows of the Black Hills; if I were to attempt to explain it, you just wouldn't understand anyway, until you do it yourself.
You don't have to be a jiu jitsu practitioner to value 90% of this book, nor should you be turned away if you have not previously read Jordan Peterson's "12 Rules for Life", but either of those will give the remaining 10% significant and indescribable depth.
I have read other work by Matakas and generally appreciate his approach. His writing is extremely thoughtful, honest, and not presumptuous. From this book i feel a "here are some things I've learned and connections I have made" but never "here is what you should do". That said, I have an updated set of action plans as a result of reading this book.
I certainly recommend it and welcome any related discussion. Best!
