The Summoning

Rate this book
Brought together for a decadent country-house party where every desire was to be met and every taste would be catered for, the socialites and personalities invited to Quainton Manor by the eccentric Lord Treece were ready to let themselves go.

But what they didn't know was that they would be trespassing.

And the Order of the Imperishable Ones would claim a revenge so awful, so gory and so horrifically inhuman that their wild party would turn into a mad dance of tormented death...

A first for me on Goodreads. I found this book in one of my many trips to my favourite second hand bookshops. I did my usual of digging out my smartphone and opening the GR’s app. Wait! There is no record of this book on GR’s. Surely Not!

So I picked it up, went home and did more looking on GR’s. Nowhere to be found. Went to the Internet Speculative Fiction database (which is a fantastic source) and discovered that the author name John Lyons is an alias for Christopher Evans, who writes Sci-Fi and Fantasy. The alias appears to have been used once for a horror book.

I requested that the book be added to GR’s which was done in a couple of minutes. I decided that after my current read, The Silence of the Lambs, I would read this unknown book next.

That cover! Trashy and sleazy. Not to be read in public. It is embarrassing enough buying the book.

The story is set in England which I loved straight away. One of the characters is Lord Treece, an eccentric, posh, rich, typical upper class toff who is introduced via a cricket (very English!) match held at his huge countryside mansion.

The next characters are introduced as they are on their way to Lord Treece’s for a party. Maddie is a pop star and Tim a lifelong acquaintance. They both have dreams about The Order of the Imperishable Ones, a cult of immortals. What links them and the mansion together?

The story unfolds, revealing the secret Order’s history. What they do. Who they are. There are creepy scary gory moments as the Order and our main characters head towards the inevitable final confrontation. There is plenty of sex along the way. This is going to be a hell of a party!

I am conflicted about the rating. I loved this book! 5 stars! All because it was such an obscure book (not even on GR’s), hunted down in a bookshop, short and to the point, great story and the exact book I was in the mood for. However, it is not an outstanding read, not a horror classic, not original or influencing, not as good compared to my other reads so 3 stars.

I will settle for 4 stars (within context). This is a great 80's horror read.

Look at that brilliant cover! But what about the content? Miranda is several thousand years old. In Egypt she was confirmed to The Order of the Imperishable Ones. Charles Vallence, great grandfather of Tim buried her alive. In England, 20th century. But she couldn't die. When Lord Treece calls for a party in his refurbished manor (it formerly belonged to Miranda) the time for revenge is here. Will anybody survive this party? Why is Tim drawn to Maddie? Set in the countryside of Kent I really enjoyed this intriguing tale full of sorcery, witchcraft, sex, evil dreams and a devilish witch. What a wild blast from the past. The cover lured me into this world of ancient magic and I wasn't disappointed. Highly recommended!
