Declutter every aspect of your life -- from your wardrobe to your phone-- with this realistic guide to getting neat and keeping things that way. We've all tried to declutter, and given up halfway through, only to be haunted by a half-tidied cupboard for months at a time. Anna Newton knows that feeling too, and what's more, she's found a way to help. Lean how to make that digital detox last; how to craft a capsule wardrobe without a black blazer or skinny jeans, and above all, how to find the right amount of stuff for you, because we can't all be Marie Kondo, can we?
I could not finish this book. I was really excited about the content as it encompassed all the topics that I seem to be reading about lately (productivity, minimalism, self-care, etc.). I got about halfway through and then skimmed the rest. Frankly, the writing style was just too casual for me. For fans of the author’s blog, it’s probably just fine, but I found the excessive use of caps and the conversational tone a bit grating. There were some good ideas in here and I fully support the messages being put forth, but overall, it just wasn’t for me.
I have been watching Anna Newton on youtube for about 2 years now. She is a lovely, calm and bubbly person. Her book echos this, and as I could find no evidence of a 'fellow writer' or ghost author, we can trust this is very much her. The tone of this book is very much kind and bubbly, no shaming because you have not yet reached an 'edited life' and absolutely no hate. While Anna writes a bit like she talks (very bubbly, might not be for everyone) this just heightens the illusion that you're in conversation with her or are watching a vlog of hers. She disclaimers regularly that this is her method and that she is not a mother/carer/have an office job. While she does offer alternatives for people who aren't freelancers from home and who aren't married to a neat husband, this is not her focus and her methods do require time.
The sections included are: Life Work Home
Life covers topics such as but not limited to:Diaries, self-care, money and setting goals. While none of this is revolutionary and/or rocket science it offers a handy guide. I especially was interested in the goal setting, something I don't do at all and will actually give a try now. Budgeting and planning she discusses very well, especially considering her time as a student and how she grew into these habits. This section was helpful to me a student, but I feel people in their mid-twenties and later will also benefit.
Work I found the least convincing/weakest area. While the decluttering your workspace part felt redundant and was somewhat repeated in the home section, the planning a work day and getting things done were not very in-depth. Her tips to beat procrastination did not appear to me to be helpful, making me marginally more productive but also only for 10min or so. The planning a work day was very focused on the fact that she has the time to work around only herself. While Anna recognises this, this part seems only helpful to people who also have this luxury or are students.
Home was lovely, cleaning guides (! very helpful if you're tackling this for the first time!) and home organisation. I specifically enjoyed her capsule wardrobe chapter, these are some of my favourite videos of her's. While they literally repeat her videos this was still fun to read.
It is important to note that this is not a book about minimalism but more about curating and constantly checking your material possessions, a good mix between our consumerist culture and a more minimal and sustainable lifestyle.
One of the best Youtube books I've read. Genuine and fun.
It’s my favorite genre, but this one didn’t do it for me. Yes it was about minimizing and streamlining, but there didn’t seem to be any stuff about being poor, or about being environmentally conscious. I wasn’t a fan of the colour of the some of the print (a pale green that was hard to read). It also seemed to have a lot of filler pitched at 90s kids. Why? Surely this is something we actually can take seriously and be mindful about? In general, it lacked critical analysis.
I personally didn't get along with it, mostly I think because I was looking for a motivational kick to get some things done and this just made me feel poor and alone. That's my current space, note the books fault.
The book gives a good overview and detailed insight into decluttering and organising. I htink if you are new to the idea of this, it might be a great introduction. Especially when budgeting and cleaning overwhelms you, this will give you hands on examples.
This also gets my approval in not being dogmatic and constantly pointing out that this is her way, which might not fit to your life. Good self-help in my opinion acknowledges that there is no one fits all solution but things you can give a try and discard if they don't work for you.
I was anxiously waiting for this book and was not disappointed!! You recognize the fun tone of voice Anna has in her videos but this book contains a lot more new material that she hasn’t covered in the past. It truly is the perfect bible for organization lovers and anyone with a slight type A personality. I will go back to it again and again (which you can tell by the number of post-its I’ve added to the pages).
I didn’t like the font choice and some of the color combos because it made it hard to read. However, the practical tips are right up my alley and I thought Anna did a great job of including action items for people in all different stages. I would consider myself to be a pretty darn organized person, but this has inspired me to finally transfer my budget from a sticky note to an excel file!
There is a lot you could criticise about this book and I think it is written for a very niche target audience. I happen to fit that target audience (married childless middle-class white woman in her late twenties who works a 9-5 and wants to be more organised) and so I actually really enjoyed this book. It covered more than I expected. Listening to it made me feel more organised and inspired. Would love to have a physical copy of the book to help me implement some of the ideas.
Pretty solid minimalism book that I think many people will find relatable and manageably actionable.
I seem to like reading about minimalism (despite my maximalist leanings) and I watch Anna’s YouTube channel (it’s a shame the audiobook wasn’t narrated by her) and I find her very likeable, so a minimalism book in her style was probably always going to be an enjoyable read for me.
On the one hand, once you’ve read one minimalism book (The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing — the minimalism bible of this generation?) you really don’t need any others and nothing on the topic will feel wholly “new” or groundbreaking to you…and, indeed, the concept of minimalism isn’t brain-exploding anyway. We all know the basic idea: chuck a load of stuff you don’t need or want. Any books on the topic are compendiums of helpful tips all packaged in a philosophy that is (hopefully) relatable and/or motivates you and to do the obvious. They are there to held your hand through the process and give you a place to start on the process. With that in mind, I only need to get a few new tips from a minimalism book to find it worthwhile and this had a fair few handy tips and things to consider that I will probably implement.
There was a little bit of slightly cliché/lazy commentary here and there (re: “we millennials don’t have it so bad really” which can come off slightly out-of-touch and privileged though, which does Anna a disservice as she does seem to make an effort to be aware of things), but I think it hits a Dolly Alderton readership group perfectly and that’s worth noting that if you aren’t that kind of reader or have huge issues with that sort of tone. I am not that kind of reader, but don’t mind if I come across that sort of thing from time to time.
Even though I wasn’t super fussed about all the 90s and Ryan Gosling references despite being only a month apart from her in age, they were all endearingly very her and I appreciate that :’)
Absolutely loved this life organization how-to book! I am a big fan of Anna Newton's YouTube and Blog and found this to be the ultimate resource for how to achieve Newton levels of life organization. I enjoyed the casual tone that felt more like a conversation with a friend or sister than a formal teacher/authority. I was taken by surprise as the topics covered were meatier and more varied than I expected. This is a step beyond your average 'Minimalism' book and switches up the traditional order/importance of activities I have typically see in the genre. The book covered three general areas: Life, Work, and Home. I expected to get the most from the Home section but am shocked by just how many tabs I have peppered through the Life section. This has some very practical tips on how to get on top of, and maintain, the ever growing list of life-management activities I dream of having under control in my own life. As for the much anticipated capsule wardrobe chapter, I didn't come out with a plan but rather a realization that the issue with my already pared-down wardrobe that my wardrobe is no longer suited to my climate. A "F.U.L.L" method review of my belongings has been scheduled along with growing list of "Items Still Missing" in the Notes app on my phone.
I highly recommend this book to those in pursuit of a organized life that addresses all those "I'll get to it someday" categories.
Another casual chat with an observant, non-judgmental friend about clutter and what to do about it. The chaos involved in a remodel disrupts one’s things, and this book helped us edit out what no longer works in a redone space. Useful, but not necessarily new, info. Many references are UK centered.
Šią knygą drąsiai galėčiau pavadinti planuojančio žmogaus biblija, nes joje galima rasti viską jo reikia, planuojant savo darnų gyvenimą : nuo išlaidų planavimo iki kūrybos ugdymo.
Savęs nepavadinčiau tvarkinga, planuojančia asmenybe. Aš chaotiška, mano "tvarka" labiau primena kūrybinį chaosą, tačiau naudingos medžiagos šioje knygoje tikrai yra net man.
I love a good system, a re-organization, a plan, or a tweak. Newton's book didn't necessarily cover a lot of new ground for me, but it did inspire me to revisit some projects I'd lost steam on, and gave me new ways to approach those projects. (Example: 2020 was supposed to be the year we Really Got Our Finances In Order Like Grown Ups but I became overwhelmed by Pandemic Angst and Just Didn't until her chapter on finance gave me the kick in the butt to shop for a better bank and outline the steps needed to switch over.) I also like that her approach to de-cluttering is a little less severe than Marie Kondo...while I definitely get into Kondo moods every couple of years, the fact that I've done it more than once speaks for itself. I also like that her approach to everything in general is to just schedule a few minutes here and there with regularity instead of taking two weeks off of your life to do a total overhaul. And I like that she says things like "dusting is balls" which I completely agree with. But my desire to wear a wide variety of loudly patterned thrift store dresses means that I probably won't ever embrace the Capsule Wardrobe lifestyle. Can't win em all.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book and it was ok, although I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't narrated by the author, and there also seemed to be quite a few graphic elements like tables or diagrams, which were a bit hard to imagine for me so I think I would get more value from it if I read it physically.
I liked the structure of the book and how various areas of life were covered in quite a lot of detail, and it inspired me to make some small changes that have had a positive impact on my life. The lighthearted tone with a lot of jokes and pop culture references worked fine for me. It's always a plus when self-help books feel relatable instead of condescending.
I don't actively watch the author on Youtube (I think I've seen one video of hers) but reading her book was an enjoyable experience and now I feel like checking out more of her content.
Okay, I can't honestly recommend this book. I skimmed it in one afternoon and gleaned all I needed/wanted to from it.
It's not that there wasn't some good information on streamlining and decluttering life as a whole (some of it even new to me). It's not that the author didn't have a compellingly dry and sassy sense of humor that I really wanted to read more of. But...the language. Many multiple instances of crudeness per chapter, some of it pretty strong.
That said, there were some genuinely good thoughts on the subject matter, and I'll probably keep this book on my shelf solely as a book design reference because the layout and formatting style are gorgeous. (One of the three stars is solely for how beautiful this book is.)
Normally I loathe chatty books, and I have yet to make it through more than two minutes of Anna Newton's extremely chatty YouTube channel yet, in spite of a very chatty tone, I enjoyed An Edited Life.
Is there anything wildly new in this book? Perhaps not, but there are some interesting gems. And I found Newton's voice quite engaging.
Note: I started reading the book but I switched to the audiobook. The font is an aggravating 8 or 9 points -- nearly impossible to read without a magnifying glass!
The narrator captured Newton's voice well and made the book all the more entertaining.
Loved this book! A very light hearted and practical book with handy life, work and home organisation tips. The tone is conversational and feels like you’re in her home and she’s giving you tips, and she delivers them in a kind and no pressure sort of way. Disclaimer that she also mentions that it may not be the most helpful if you are a mother and is best suited to someone in the freelancer space.
Just like I love her YouTube channel and her IG posts, I love Anna's writing style. I also aspire to have her capsule wardrobe and work ethos and frankly her husband (not actually her husband but you know, the kind of equal relationship they have). I would also love to be able to put some of these steps into practice but I think I might need an external source to actually help me do it. Enter ADHD diagnosis in a month or so :)
The perfect book for January. It made me feel inspired to declutter, clean and form smarter habits. Even simple things like creating to do lists to capsule wardrobes fill me with delight, the perfect time to read this and will be using it as a reference to keep me on track! Was a light, fun read and felt like I was taking advice from a friend.
Simple, clean life advice that is well organized and easy to digest. However, her writing style seems more appropriate for spoken word rather than written, and may be a bit distracting for someone who is unfamiliar with her YouTube career. Still, she's a cool gal and the book was an enjoyable read.
This is basically a reference book written by a favorite pal. I read it little bit by little bit and enjoyed it. Nothing groundbreaking for me personally (I’m already a Virgo who loves organizing) but I did enjoy reading it for inspiration! It now has a home on my desk for me to return to it when I need a specific piece of advice.
Informative, not a stuffy 'throw things away or you won't fulfil a good life' book. Anna knows how to engage with her audience and make references to things we have all thought or do in the past (and present and future!)
Buenos consejos de organización expresados de manera más flexible y menos surrealista que el método Konmari. Algunas de las técnicas ya las llevo a cabo (olé, yo), pero otras tantas me las apunto.
Really easy to read book filled with great tips and tricks. This is definitely a book I will be adding to my to my bookshelf since this was borrowed from the library.
