Holy Cajun hotness! I loved every bit of this book and devoured it all in two sittings. I was curious/skeptical about this Voodoo thing but having read Colon’s Blood in Iron series, I had a feeling I couldn’t go wrong. I was not mistaken. The author does such an amazing job of sucking you right into the story with her vivid characters and I especially loved Angel’s spicy Latin roots. And I cannot say enough about the smokin’ hot Benoit brothers. The "will they or won’t they” between the two MC's is sizzling hot and will keep you turning the pages all night long. I won’t go too much into the story because I hate spoilers so just do yourself a favor and read this book!
I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. I wasn't too sure what to expect, this was my first novel by this author. I really enjoyed this story. Angel and Etie, their chemistry was so steamy it had my squeeing throughout the entire novel.
I do not know too much about Voodoo, so I felt like this novel was a great introduction into some of the practices and the deities with their culture. The betrayal and lies within this first installment was incredible. I cannot wait to start book 2 later today.
Angel is a wonderful main character because she is so feisty and sassy. Etie is just so complex...because of his powers (Yummy). I cannot wait to see what is going to transpire next as we know the Voodoo King is not going to give up so easily.
Screw me for expecting quality out of this thing. The story's start was so damned promising- Evangeline stands at the Benoits' door after introducing us to her problem- she has three weeks before her soul belongs to Baron Samedi. You think this is going to be a fast-paced story with twists and turns and a constant battle with time from that kind of opening.
As if Sigils and Spells would have anything good except Henchgirl. She bails and just mopes around doing volunteer work and being jealous of her sister's boobs when she has three weeks to live MAYBE THIS ISN'T THE FUCKING TIME???? I HATE this. The opening was 10/10 at telling us the stakes and showing us just how desperate Evangeline is and what follow just ruins it.
Then the love interest shows up and I just felt so old reading this '''romance'''. Like, I'm sorry but this couple is so fucking standard I was dying of boredom every time they were together. You have it all here! The hot arrogant guy! The insecure flat-chested girl! Them being tsunderes for half the book before realizing they're totally in love! The guy teasing the girl about finding him hot and then totally mocking her for ever thinking they could ever be together, duh, then saving her from random rapist #19175891. The ENTIRE FUCKING CAST telling us how much the guy loves the girl when all he does is scream at her how incompetent she is and why couldn't she wait for him before trying to save her own life? The guy being a fucking martyr by acting like he doesn't give a shit about her when he's actually falling for her and not telling her incredibly important information for the sake of looking like a good guy who spends his time helping random people. The insecure, flat-chested girl getting the hot guy the whole town and their cousins want to fuck, from the most ridiculous gay stereotype to blonde with tits named Trisha #18341.
And yeah Etienne just goes around not telling Evangeline he's working on her problem and then gets mad when she tries to do something because she thinks he doesn't give a shit. It's so unlikable- like Evangeline has the anxiety of a cat on Xanax as the end of her life is making its way ever closer, but if she were an actual human being who possesses a survival instinct, think of how shitty him acting like that is. She's got three weeks to live and NO idea of what to do, relying on him is the only thing she can do and also her last try, and the guy just fucks off for three days. If it were my ass I'd set his fucking house on fire and go off on my own.
Like Evangeline so did not give a shit about her soul being taken by the voodoo king. She's still got time to be jealous of her sister, annoyed at her grandma for trying to make her eat and go off doing summer jobs. I'm sorry, what? "I'm gonna die in three weeks, but first I need pocket money?" WHAT FOR??? FUCK YOUR SISTER'S BOOBS, FUCK YOUR GRANDMA, FUCK YOUR JOB,YOU'RE GONNA DIE IN THREE WEEKS YOU CUNT. ACT LIKE IT.
In fact, these assholes so not behave like real people. Etienne just goes from super flirty to extreme disgust of being near Evangeline and then mad af. I also refuse to believe the explanation in the book- 1, it's really stupid and shitty of his brother to not have tried to help with these emotional issues with medications and 2 everyone has it. Evangeline has these random 'oh Etienne doesn't care', goes off on her own, gets in trouble and Etienne shows up to save her and repeat.
Also there's this one scene where he leaves her in a bar and a guy comes harass her. After Etienne saves her (of course he does) they all blame her for not telling him no and dumping her glass on him or something.
I'M SORRY??? I'M SORRY??? What kind of fucking logic is that??? YOU BROUGHT HER THERE. IT'S YOUR FAULT YOU DESPICABLE ASS. And I'm sorry but she's a fucking minor too, the guy was drunk and would probably have just raped her had this shit continued- since she wasn't saying anything BECAUSE SHE WAS TERRIFIED. How can you blame her for that??? She's gonna die in 3 weeks!
Like fuck I'm all for being aware of risks- don't drink and drive, always keep an eye on your drinks, don't travel alone at night especially if you're a man and keep an eye on disreputable areas in your town people- but Evangeline had no idea they would be going there, Etienne just took her despite them being both underage and her in the aftermath of being attacked by supernatural creatures- then he just drops her to talk with Trisha- like rude much?
Also I'm getting real fucking tired of authors shortening beautiful names to honestly disgusting nicknames. Like, Evangeline is such a beautiful name, but you go for Angel? Really? And Etie. Like, Etienne is just so hard to type am I right? And let's not fucking mention the Eve-angel-ine shit that made me so fucking mad I wanted to shit tear the goddamned book apart.
How is Evangeline able to understand perfectly when people are speaking voodoo? Like I'm sorry but doing that shit just breaks immersion. If you're writing in 1st person and your character only speaks English and Spanish, they shouldn't be able to transcribe another language they didn't even know existed, right? It should be 'Etienne spoke in a tongue I couldn't understand' not '"Votre livre est de la merde" said Etienne, not that I knew what it meant.'
Just what was her grandma's plan? How long did she know about Evangeline's deal with Samedi? WHY THE FUCK DID SHE WAIT SO LONG BEFORE MAKING HER GO TO ETIENNE??? Why didn't she try shit to help her own fucking granddaughter? Why didn't they try to save Marisol through witchcraft????
And of course they join souls lol can't have a couple who's not married in 3 days am i righte.
What a great book. It reads well . Could not stop reading it. The relationship between Angeline and Etienne was nerve racking but exciting at the same time. I can’t wait to start the next book
I received an ARC of Voodoo Unleashed from Ms. Colon, and this is my honest review. Angel is a 17 year old that made a deal with the Voodoo King when she was only a child. The deal was her soul would belong to the Voodoo King upon her 18th birthday in exchange for her sister's soul. As her 18th birthday looms closer, Angel seeks out Etie, the hot and sexy Cajun who is said to know and practice Voodoo. As Etie and Angel work together, their attraction grows as well as being stumped on how to save Angel's soul.
I have to say that Voodoo Unleashed drew me in and kept me enthralled. Ms. Colon weaves a late of magic, lust, secrets, and betrayals. Angel made a horrible decision with the best intention. Now, she has to pay the consequences, but she is not done living her life. i really liked Angel and Etie. Their personalities are strong-willed and stubborn. Angel's family had me laughing and a bit irritated with their actions. Voodoo Unleashed was very well written, and it kept me enraptured. Ms. Colon's Voodoo world is full of magic, monsters, lust, and busty women who try to steal someone. I found Voodoo Unleashed to be captivating and entertaining without the need to have hot and heavy sex scenes mixed in. I highly recommend this to those 16+. This does end up in a cliffhanger. Thank you Ms. Colon for allowing me to read your story. I look forward to finding out what happens next to Angel and Etie.
First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but it in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.
Holy shiznet!!! I couldn't put this down. It grabbed me from the first page and held me to the end. Angel, (Evangeline, or as Etienne calls her Angeline), is a pretty feisty young who when she let's herself be. Most of the time she's just shy. When she was 10, her older sister was dying so she went to find Papa Legba, a voodoo deity to ask him to save her. But that isn't what happened. Instead she traded her soul for her sister's but to be given on her 18th birthday. She goes to ask Etienne to help her, he's whispered about doing voodoo. So many things happen in this story. Evil spirits, an evil deity, shapeshifter, a demon, a zombie, lots of voodoo, secrets revealed, and let's not forget, love blooming. I can't wait to read the next story. I recommend this read 5 Thumbs up
Voodoo Unleashed is about a girl who did a very stupid thing for all the right reasons. But when magic and voodoo are involved there’s always a price to pay and the Voodoo King has come to collect. If she’s to make it through her next birthday she’s going to need some help, even if that means asking the mysterious and hot Cajun who’s rumored to know a thing or two about voodoo.
This book was awesome and I mean awesome. It will pull you in from the very first page and refuse to let you go until you reach the end. Sleep, eating, work—the world around you…it all takes a backseat to this book. J.N. Colon has a way of weaving words, worlds, and setting up scenes that leave you hooked and wanting more.
Do yourself a favor and read this book now. You won’t regret it.
Yes it is filled with the standard YA tropes of hot broody bad boy hero who blows hot n cold, sweet, innocent heroine who is obessessed with a guy who is kind of a dick, slutty/trampy ex, insta-love, soulbindings and family secrets but sometimes I just want to switch off my brain and dive into that. And this one was a fun, sexy read. I liked how fiery Evangeline was and the heat between Etienne and Evangaline was off the charts. One thing I don't understand though was if her grandmother knew about the deal why the hell did she wait until Angel only had a couple of weeks to live before trying something to get her out of the deal?
Evangeline was a fantastic character who made a bad deal. Trying to find someone to help her who knew voodoo was interesting. Etienne knew voodoo and was a great character. Lots of action and a touch of the paranormal and a great story all the way around. I look forward to the next book. The two had great chemistry and the secondary characters were also wonderful. This story was hard to set down. Loved it!! I am voluntarily reviewing an arc I received.
Ummm I need the next book ASAP! I couldn't put this book down. As soon as I started reading the book, I was drawn to the characters and the interesting story line. Evangeline (Angel) is feisty, headstrong and loves her family. Étienne is...well, pretty amazing. I like how he is both dark and light, it makes him so much more interesting. The secondary characters are just as great and I can't wait to meet Evangeline's friends in the next book.
Incredible read! I absolutely love it when hero and the heroine don't get on my nerves. Angel is incredibly funny as she navigates through her feelings with Etie as well as figure out a way to undo a decision she made years prior. It is a fun, humorous, intoxicatingly, well written adventure! Throughly enjoyed this read and I look forward to reading the second book in this adventure.
Sweet voodoo babies... this book literally crying I was laughing so hard. Angel is a stick of dynamite, she may be little but with a big bang. And Etie knows just how to push her buttons to bring out her sass, and other feeling with his Casanova charm. Great story line with unexpected twisted, and like I already said lots of humor, the sarcasm is on point.
A wonderful series!!! I love the Cajun aspect and reading about Voodoo. Could not put it down.
Bought this book first in anthology, but wanted it separate. I had already bought book 2 and now preordered the third book and am hoping hardcore for more!!! I love the characters, even the unsavory ones. Read and enjoy every bit!
Oh my word. I'd give it more stars if I could. Etienne is the epitome of hot. The sparks between Etie and Evangeline sizzle in more ways than one. I love, love, loved reading this. I absolutely cannot wait for the next one.
I could not put this down until I finished reading it. The characters were wonderful, full of life and amazing. The plot itself - who would have thought - such a rich, true to life incorporation of beliefs.
This story is fast paced opening into action and just going from there. The danger permeates the book and we are left with a minor cliffhanger. The language is mild but the pages drip with thick sexual tension which, at times, was a bit much for me.
The voodoo aspect and Cajun backdrop was interesting but the overall story was just too underdeveloped for my liking. I just didn’t care for the characters bc they were two dimensional and the dialogue was pretty unrealistic and quite corny.
I loved this book and where the series is headed. It was my favorite story in the Sigils and Spells compilation and I look forward to reading the next installment. The Voodoo elements of the story are just marvelous!
