Bette Lee Crosby has many fans. She writes for women. From time to time, it's comforting reading a heart warming story written especially with my gender in mind. Bette's short novel hit the spot...the mood I was looking for.
Without being heavy, this story tapped into my own appreciation for my women friends....whom are an invaluable part of my life.

I've been a 'fan' of Bette-( as a person and friend), since she first joined the site many years ago. This is the first book of hers I've read.

The two main characters are Ophelia Browne, almost 90 years old, who runs the "Memory House Bed and Breakfast" house, and Annie Cross, who after a fight with her boyfriend, Michael, rents a room from Ophelia. Originally, Annie planned to stay just a couple of days...but felt a warmth of immediate connection with Ophelia, so she extends her stay for a week.

There is a little mystery going on ... we sense this very early into the storytelling, almost minutes after Annie and Ophelia meet. "There is a certain magic here; we both felt it the minute we stepped across the threshold"........
That quote was about Ophelia thinking back to when she first met her husband, Edward....but I felt it was a 'duel' purpose sentence in this story. Ophelia thinks "Annie is the one", soon after they meet --as the person who has the qualities to appreciate and understand the value of memories....which Ophelia wants to pass on before she dies.

When Annie first arrives, she has an acute awareness of smells....(Rosemary, lavender, ginger, etc.). The women share dandelion tea together, biscuits, stew, and share conversations. Annie learns about Ophelia's beloved husband. Things are comforting and peaceful... but then something frightens Annie. ( something in her past) Ophelia is afraid too...for Annie's future. Ophelia begins to feel protective of her. Worries for her.

This story made me think about how many times in any relationship - in friendships - we may all want the same thing... (inner peace, courage, strength, Independence, love in our hearts....a feeling of connection with community), but even though we may take different paths in finding our own way....our memories together are precious and tie us together.

Thank you Bette for being my friend...
......writing a book that brings a little magic to our memories...for celebrating
storytelling and women....
and....for cherishing this world we live in.

Ophelia Browne has lived in her home for a long, long time. She has found that over the years, memories to come to her. Not only her own, but the memories of others as well. She is almost 90 years old and makes note that most women in her family, do not live past 90. She is hopeful that she will find someone to take over for her. Someone who will be able to keep the memories alive and run her bed and breakfast knows as Memory House.

Annie lives in Philadelphia and recently had a painful breakup with her long time boyfriend. She feels that weekend away is just what she needs to get back on track. She happens to stay at Memory House and immediately is drawn to Ophelia and her wonderful home. The women forge a friendship over the weekend that will impact both tremendously. As the sip their dandelion tea and unfold the stories of both of their lives, they will intertwine and impact both of their lives.

This story is a very sweet story of love, friendship, loss, discovery, moving on, living life fully, and perhaps even believing in magic. The real magic is in the storytelling. Bette Lee Crosby writes stories that have heart and are a pleasure to read. Be warned she may turn you into a tea drinker! All the tea drinking that goes in this book, made me want some as well. Her books are full of southern charm, and tales of love and friendship. Perfect for reading over a weekend! This is a great book for anyone but especially for readers who do not want to deal with heavy subject matter or graphic scenes. This book is charming and engaging.

This book is part of a series and I would recommend reading it first, although I read it out of order and did not mid it one bit!

If you enjoyed Spare Change,Twelfth Child, Previously Loved Treasures or any of my other books I think you will love this one.

It is a story about stories. As you meander through Ophelia's many memories, you will come across some of the people and things you have loved in the other books.

Join Ophelia and Annie as they uncover the magical realism of life.

For those who are friends and fans, this book is now available for pre-order at the crazy wonderful price of 99 Cents. But hurry, it goes back to the original price shortly after its release on April 14th

After waiting a long time to get my hands on a copy, I think I had a fair idea what would happen when I picked up this book. And it did. I slipped effortlessly into the world of Memory House Bed and Breakfast and its almost ninety year old owner Ophelia Browne. To the bed and breakfast comes the broken hearted Annie Cross who comes to stay a couple of nights and finds more than she bargained for. This charming book about memories that outlive their owners was a delight to read. It is a book about inter-generational friendship, lasting love and also that which is a pale imitation of love. Yes, it is a feel good story but not all is sweetness and light, as Annie discovers when some darker memories and experiences appear.
This is a the first Bette Lee Crosby book I have read and I knew from the moment I started reading it, there would be no putting this book aside and no stopping till I finished it. My problem when I closed the last page is now I want to read all the books in this series and probably a number of this author’s others too. I’m about to start compiling a list for family of suggested books from Mother’s Day. I don’t want to say to much about this book. It’s better to read it and let the experience wash over you. Recommended reading especially for any who know or have known lasting love and the way friendships span generations.

The sign that Annie Cross almost missed during her long and sad drive said “Memory House Bed & Breakfast”; as she walked up to the door she felt like she had been there before – and when she went inside with Ophelia Browne it felt like home. Ophelia was getting close to ninety years of age – her unique gift of finding memories was one she needed to pass on to another before she herself passed on; she was becoming desperate, but when Annie entered her home, Ophelia knew Annie was her answer.

Annie had only planned to stay for the weekend – her fight with Michael had caused her headlong dash along the highway – but the immediate friendship she felt with the elderly Ophelia, and the peace she found at Memory House meant she stayed for a week. As the two women shared dandelion tea Annie listened to the stories Ophelia had to tell. She learned about Edward, Ophelia’s beloved husband; and among others, the memories of an old bike and a ball. At first disbelieving, Annie was intrigued and fascinated by the tales.

But was there more to the pleasant and happy memories than Ophelia and Annie realized? What had happened to frighten Annie? All of a sudden Ophelia was fearful for Annie; fearful for the future – could she stop what she had started?

I absolutely loved Memory House by Bette Lee Crosby. This is a delightful story with wonderful characters, some of whom are taken from the author’s previous books – there is mystery and intrigue plus a sense of peace and wellbeing in this novel. I have yet to read a book by Crosby that I haven’t loved, and have no hesitation in recommending Memory House extremely highly.

With thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.

3.5 stars. My first by this author and am planning on another, Spare Change, for my in person book club soon. It has a connection to this book I was not aware of before.

Bette Lee is a great writer. Even though I don't normally like romances or light reads, this was well done and fit the bill for what I needed at this time. Not sure I am entirely sold on some of the elements used, but I thought it a sweet story, not overly so.

First of all, I would like to thank Bette for the opportunity to read an early copy of this book. You continue to be one of my favorite authors.

I decided after reading this book again recently that I wasn't going to give out the story or get into details about it or the characters. There is too much going on in the story. When you're reading this book you need to feel the magic and I don't believe you will and less you start with an open mind and an open heart. This is what I would consider to be a do you delicious story about me believing. I can tell you honestly that I will go back to read this book again and again. It makes me feel magical.

A special thank you to Bent Pine Publishing and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The MEMORY HOUSE, (Book #1 Memory House Series) is a magical book of memories, of stories; from award-winning master southern storyteller, Bette Lee Crosby- bringing treasures of unique gifts, while re-connecting with much loved previous heart-warming characters.

Ophelia Browne is approaching ninety years of age, and runs a small quaint bed and breakfast, Memory House B&B, in her charming picturesque home surrounded by a quaint garden.

On the far edge of Richmond, Virginia, a small town of Burnsville, with winding streets and quaint houses, some dating back to the nineteenth century--Ophelia lives in the white house at the end of Haber Street. A passerby would not readily notice her house, partially hidden, she has a small apothecary shop, restoring faith and making miracles.

She misses her husband of many years who died and has a unique gift of caring for forgotten memories. She needs to pass along her memories and gift, to the right person; however, she worries she is getting older and this person has not come along, as of yet; however, this may soon change.

Annie Cross needs a break, from Philadelphia, and she has no destination in mind. She has to think, and get away from her personal life and professional life. A thousand subtle reminders of the love that has died a slow and painful death after seven years. She picks up for the weekend alone and stumbles upon Memory House B&B, and decides to stay for the weekend. Little does she know this trip will be the start of remembering.

However, what she discovers is so magical, drawing her into the smells, the comfort and serenity the place, its owner, its memories, the garden, and the setting. She winds up getting to know Ophelia, a wise woman, drinking tea, great conversation, and working in the garden. She extends her relaxing stay for a week, and knows in her heart, she will return soon.

Ophelia connects with Annie and knows she is the one who will appreciate and understand the memories. A lifetime of special people and memories and the ways they connect. She will tell her the story of Edward, her husband and all the other unique people in her life. She remembers everything, from her own life and from the lives of those who came before her. She has only to touch her hand to an object and can feel the special memory clinging to it. Few women have lived to be her age in the family and she needs to find a replacement before her death, or the memories may be lost forever. Now there is hope.

Annie is not in any rush to get back to her normal life with Michael, surrounded by numbers; she is captivated by Ophelia, her life, her past, and her stories. However, as much as Ophelia wants to embrace Annie, she is also fearful for Annie, the future-- and does not want to scare her away. She wants it to be her choice and cannot force it. Annie has to uncover new memories, and some not so pleasant, and ones buried. Sometimes the past has to be faced, in order to move on to a new future.

Ophelia tells of the memory she discovered in each treasure, but like so many aspects of life there is more-much more. All of these treasurers have a story that came before and after; an unfaithful lover, a lifetime of heartaches, a heavy-handed father, a mother who would give her life to save a child.

Each of these stories can be found in one of Bette's other novels. If you have not had a chance to read, Spare Change, Jubilee's Journey, Passing Through Perfect, Twelfth Child, Previously Loved Treasures, Wishing for Wonderful or What Matters Most , you will get a brief summary of each as well as how they connect to this special story.

Would recommend reading them all, and as Bette says, "The best stories are always the ones that start with a grain of truth, and then grow into something magical!"

I have loved all Bette’s inspiring stories— her passion is reflected through each of her books, from quirky southern tales, award-winning stories, special friends, and eccentric characters which will warm your heart, making you smile, filled with life lessons, wit and humor, and takeaways you will remember long after the book ends.

Memory House is magical, and fans of Sarah Addison Allen, Lisa Van Allen, Donna Ball, and Catherine Ryan Hyde, will enjoy, this one, as well as fans of all her previous books which connect in a special unique way.

I was blessed to be able to read this book ahead of time with an advanced reader copy. The book is magical with bits of this author's other books woven in here and there. As I have read most if not all of Mrs Crosby's other books I found that to be quite delightful. Ophelia owns a beautiful bed and breakfast. It's not advertised and is left to chance that Annie happens to find the place. One might think that Ophelia is eccentric but she does not let Annie know too much too soon. Ophelia believes that objects retain their former owner's memories. She has experienced this for herself but that is a thing you don't just blurt out if you want to be taken seriously. Wonderful book Mrs. Crosby please keep up your writing I can't wait to read the next one!

Memories, like love, can last an eternity and beyond. I was lucky enough to beta read this book for Bette. She has a way of writing that captures you from page one and you can't put the book down. I loved this book! It will make you think of the things that you have and treasure that hold memories for you. Can items hold our memories? I believe that they can. This book brought my own memories to life and left me feeling incredibly blessed. I highly encourage you to read this book. Exquisite writing style, as always, but these pages come to life. You will adore the characters and feel a part of their journey. Thank you Bette, for this beautiful book. It is truly amazing! You are a storyteller of the highest caliber.

I was lucky enough to get an advanced reader's copy of this book from the author.

I have loved every book that Bette Lee Crosby has written to date. I had a favorite before reading this one, but now have a new favorite. This book was so good it was impossible to put down. If you have read her other books then this one will be even better. It has bits and pieces that you will recognize throughout the story.

Ophelia has a Bed and Breakfast that Annie accidentally happens upon while she is driving to get away from her troubles. She stops and decides to stay at Memory House for a few days and falls in love with the place and the owner, Ophelia. Ophelia tells her about some of the things she has that contain memories. Of course Annie is not sure if she really believes this or not, until she touches a bike that is in Ophelia's shed. She herself feels the memory of the boy who owned the bike years before. This has her intrigued and makes her want to clean the bike and find out who the owner is. Ophelia believes that a boy named Allen owned the bike.

Annie leaves her old life and moves in with Ophelia to help take care of her. She also works hard to get the bike like it was when Allen rode it. After she gets it as new as possible, which is quite a chore, she discovers who Allen really is and where he lives. She decides to take the bike to him, but when she and Ophelia get to his townhouse it is not who she thought, but is Allen's son. They start seeing each other and become very close. They fall in love and he gives her a big surprise for Christmas. Meeting his parents.

Mrs Crosby weaves a story in a way that will stay with you for a long long time. It is a wonderful book from the first page to the last, which you will hate to see end. It definitely leaves you wanting more and don't be surprised if you get it one day. That is the great thing about this author's books, you never know when you will get a new book that contains just what you wanted; knowing more about a book you read before and wondered what happened to a character or characters.

This is by far my favorite book by Mrs Crosby and I am hoping there will be more about Annie and Oliver in the future.

If you believe in memories and want to read a great book about stories in stories this is the book for you. You can get it now for 99 cents, it goes back to the original price shortly after its release on April 14th.

This is my honest review and in no way was affected by it being a gift. I can't imagine anyone reading it and not loving it. Great, wonderful touching story...

I have always loved Bette's books and this one is no exception. Bette knows how to weave a tale and if you start reading her books, many of the characters are interwoven into various books. I like reading about familiar characters and learning a bit more than I have from the other books.

Annie's character has a lot to deal with in her life including a jerk of a boyfriend. She decides to take a weekend away and ends up at a B&B with Ophelia who can "read" items...she can tell things about what happened to people from items she holds. Annie learns a lot about herself and what she wants with her life while staying with Ophelia. There are some interesting twists at the end with some of the characters, all good though!

Three and a half stars. This was a shorter story. If you read the notes from the author at the end you will see that the memories come from characters in her other novels. I have read most of them. The stories are longer and more involved and IMO, very good.

I am not sure if I am a fan of the "memory" of an article as described in the book, but it was an interesting concept and the story came together quite well, albeit predictably. It was lovely to visit Ethan Allen again and to see the path his life had taken.

I would definitely recommend reading Spare Change at the very least before reading this book.

“Before you find the magic of life you have to open yourself up to the possibility of it being there.”
Memory House is a delightfully magical story about love and memories. Annie is at a crossroads, unhappy with her job as an actuary and recently broken up with her boyfriend. She happens upon a bed and breakfast owned by Ophelia, a sweet elderly woman who is also an apothecary and a keeper of memories. Ophelia sees a kindred spirit in Annie, and the two women begin a very special friendship. When Annie begins to feel a connection to Ophelia's treasures, she is determined to change her life as she tries to unravel the mysteries that beckon to her. Memory House is a very heartwarming story. The friendship between the women feels genuine, and the mysteries behind the memories are intriguing. This book is part of a series, and you will be compelled to read the rest of the books after you finish this book.

After reading this book I want to go 1-click all of Bettes books and go into hiding until I've read them all. This author has a great way of telling her stories. While reading this I could visualise the story playing out in front of me, as if I was watching it on tv.

Ophelia is a lovely lady that's nearly ninety. She runs the Memory House bed and breakfast. When Annie enters her life she believes it's fate. Both characters are wonderful. The story is sweet and addictive. Once you start you won't want to stop.

As with previous books by Bette I found myself sad that it ended even though Bette gave us a beautiful ending.

Looking forward to reading more of this wonderful storyteller.

I was lucky to receive an advanced copy of the book. This is such an amazing book that grabs you from the beginning to the very end. So sad to see it end. I loved Annie's character and hated her jerk of a boyfriend. I fell in love with Ophelia and how she can sense old memories from the feel of an object. Annie trying to run away from her disappointing life ends up staying at Ophelia's for a couple of nights. She seems to have the same powers as Ophelia and wants to learn more. Such an amazing story! I loved every minute of it. Thanks for the copy of the book Bette.

If only I could give this book more than 5 stars! I loved every minute of this book. I loved it so much, I found myself wanting to hurry and finish what I was doing so I could get back to it.

I felt so involved,so invested in the characters. It has been a long time since I have gotten so completely absorbed in a story.

This is a book for locking yourself away and reading cover to cover, then reading it again!

Fans of Bette Lee Crosby's work will love how this novel ties in elements from most of her others. But you don't need to have read Crosby's other novel to enjoy this story of a vulnerable young woman finding her way in the world, aided by the kindness of an older woman who has a unique gift. It's easy to love these two characters, and I hope they'll appear again in future Crosby stories!

My Review of "Memory House" by Bette Lee Crosby

I was captivated and enthralled  by the magical and memorable novel, "Memory House" by Bette Lee Crosby. Bette Lee Crosby writes such a vivid and descriptive novel with an intriguing cast of characters. The Genres for this Novel are Fiction, Women's Fiction, Romance and Magical Realism.

The author describes the characters as complex, complicated, and quirky. Some of the characters have special abilities.  Ophelia Browne  who is ninety years old, lives in an old house filled with memories, and items that seem to have memories .Ophelia has a gift in keeping and getting memories from others, especially through objects. It is Ophelia's goal to find a successor to be able to hold and keep these memories, when  Ophelia is no longer living.

Annie Cross, is heartbroken, and somehow she is drawn to this house of memories. Ophelia seems to realize that Annie also seems to possess this gift. The two form a friendship and Annie learns to  garden and use herbs from Ophelia.  As Ophelia shares some of  her prized possessions and reveals the memories, Annie starts to realize that she is reacting to memories as well.  Annie becomes obsessed with a broken bicycle and a ball that is in the house. Annie is on a quest to find out who the bicycle belonged to.

Ophelia starts to worry when some of Annie's memories seem to be dangerous.  I love the interaction between Ophelia and Annie.  The "Memory House" is an exceptional entertaining and enjoyable story that I highly recommend.

Annie is at a crossroads and decides to get out of town for the weekend. She runs across a bed and breakfast about 6 hours from home. After getting settled in, she spends some time with Ophelia, the almost 90 year old owner, and Annie decides to spend a week. This is the beginning of a wonderful friendship between the two.

I loved this heartfelt book about a widow and her new young friend. Having read some of Crosby's other books which I also loved, it was fun to run across some "old friends". Every time I pick up a book by this author I know that I need to set aside some time because I become totally immersed.

Four stars: A magical realism story that will enchant you.

Ophelia Brown is almost ninety years old. She has lived in the Memory House by herself, protecting the objects that hold special memories. Ophelia has no children or family, so she is anxious to find someone who will carry on her legacy. Finally by chance, a young lady, Annie, shows up on her doorstep looking to rent a room for night. Ophelia dares to hope that Annie might be the one. Over some magical dandelion tea, the two talk, and Ophelia knows that Annie is indeed the one. Can Ophelia convince Annie that there is magic in memories?
What I Liked:
*I am a sucker for magical realism stories as I like to believe that there is the possibility of magic in the real world. Ms. Crosby delivers a sweet and simple story with two unforgettable women who forge a lovely friendship, along with a pinch of magic. If you are looking for a light, quick, cozy read, this is a sure bet.
*I adored Ophelia Brown. At almost ninety years old, she knows she is nearing the end of her life. Yet, she is as active and alive as ever. Ophelia has a special gift for blending herbs in a way that helps others, almost a bit like magic. Ophelia is wise, and a bit magical. Along with her gift for herbs, she has a talent for being able to glean memories off from certain objects. Every once in awhile, something she handles will impart memories of the past from its previous owner to Ophelia. Ophelia believes that memories have their own life and that it is up to her to share her gift. Ophelia is one of those characters who will immediately draw you in.
*Annie is a young woman, struggling with the every day burdens of life. A job that has gone sour and a failed romance, lead her on a small getaway. Annie lands on Ophelia's doorstep, and soon, the women form a fast friendship. I liked that Annie was quickly able to open her heart to Ophelia and her mind to the possibility of magic. I enjoyed watching her journey and seeing her transform. Together, Annie and Ophelia are magical.
*The story take us through Annie's troubled romance as well as Ophelia's long lost love. I liked Ophelia's romance, it is one that is sweet and sad. Annie after a struggle finally learns to let go, and in the end, a lovely new romance awaits her as well. I loved both romances.
*I have only read two books by Ms. Crosby prior to this one, and I liked that there were traces of the two stories I knew in this book. Fans of Ms. Crosby will be delighted to know that all the articles that possess memories in the house are from her other novels, so if you have read all her books, you will easily be able to pick out what item goes to which story, and you will understand the history of each item. I thought this was a clever and unique concept.
And The Not So Much:
*This was a quick, light read, but I didn't like that it ended a bit abruptly. It stops just at the point where things are moving in a happy, positive direction for Annie. I was expecting a bit more resolution for both Annie and Ophelia. It almost felt like a prequel, and I am hopeful that there will be more story to come because there is certainly more story to tell.
*This is a personal preference, but for me, I feel the book would have been more impactful if the author had stuck strictly to a first person narrative throughout. The majority of the story is told via third person, but then there are these small chapters that are done in first person that relay Annie or Ophelia's thought. I felt much more connected to the chapters done in first person vs. the third person.

Memory House is a simple, sweet story perfect for those who love a small dose of magic. This is the perfect cozy read for when you need a quick pick me up or for when you need a easy way to wile away an afternoon or a stormy day. This is a book with memorable characters, a touching romance and a nice story. Give it a try.

Favorite Quotations:
" A good memory is something you ave to live with for a while, let it settle in and become part of who you are. Then when it's feeling at home and welcome, you can move on to the next one."
"The thing is," Ophelia adds, "there's a big difference in missing someone because they filled a hole in your life and missing someone because they were your whole life."

I have a high regard for this author as a person.
The magical component to memory is interesting, but the book was just a simple “telling” for me. It was repetitive and the timing was just not right. I will read others that I have of hers hoping for magic to return

If there is anything you would give up your career and home for, what might it be? Is there something you might find joy in doing other than your current occupation, that you have an untapped talent for?
Annie had intended to leave town only for the weekend when she was ready to get on with her life after her boyfriend of several years left her and she suffered from nightmares. An actuarial, Annie was used to dealing with facts and figures, and had a very good job. Yet there was something at Ophelia Browne’s home that drew her and compelled her to return to visit over and over until she moved there.
The home of Ophelia Browne is unique, the place where her late husband knew she belonged. It is a location that is perfect for a house of memories – and Ophelia houses memories in this beautiful old home on the far side of Richmond, Virginia. Her home is also The Memory House Bed and Breakfast, where the weary Annie Cross stopped to seek lodging for the night. And once Ophelia, nearing 90, and Annie, a much younger career woman, meet and spend time together, it seems as though they are two peas in a pod with the exception of age – and memories.
Ophelia knows that her time on earth will soon be done, and believes somebody must follow in her footsteps. She feels that Annie is the one who has the gift, but she has to talk with her about it little by little. The concept of a keeper of memories held by objects is foreign to me, yet perhaps it can be compared in many ways to the keeper of memories of a family, a city, a country. Ophelia “found” memories of the one(s) who owned objects. The objects with the most favorite memories are in treasured places in the loft of her home, and after Annie quits her job, sublets her apartment, and moves to Ophelia’s home that those favored objects are shared with her.
During an early visit, Annie felt a pull from an old rusted bicycle. She felt an absolute compulsion to learn the memories of the bicycle, trying to understand it and its owner. She began to clean and remove the rust from the bicycle. Annie also learns how to grow the herbs and flowers that Ophelia has had in her garden for decades, and begins to learn the properties and uses of various herbs as Ophelia sells in her apothecary shop. Annie wants to earn some money and goes into town to look for a job, and learns surprising things about herself and the world around her. And the memories she finds seem like her nightmares instead of happiness.
Bette Lee Crosby’s characters are likable. One can meet someone like the Annie of the early pages of the book in almost any company – focused on numbers and facts, upward mobility. Excellent at what she did? Absolutely! But not in a position where she could use both feelings and facts together to make decisions. The Annie you see later in is a stranger in many ways.
The author’s writing style draws one in to the novel quickly – the pages flew by. This is the first book that I’ve read of Ms. Crosby’s, so I was unfamiliar with the tie-ins to her other novels. One could read Memory House without reading her other books; however, I was a little slower to see the significance of some of the treasured items. The charm of the characters, the home, and the town, and writing that is solid, yet gentle makes for a thought-provoking novel that can lead one to thinking through some of their own choices. And, I do want to read the rest of Bette’s books now that are related to Memory House! I highly recommend this novel to women of all ages who have read and appreciated any of Bette Lee Crosby’s earlier novels, and those who appreciate strong, stable female characters who are able to grow and change to be true to themselves. This can, to my delight, be considered a clean read.
With a grateful heart, I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own, and no monetary compensation was received for this review.

...books and stories, that's where the magic is

Bette Lee Crosby is a master storyteller and her latest novel, Memory House follows the path of all the rest of her novels I have read - excellence. Her captivating characters had me eating out of their hands.

Bette's writing takes us back and forth, between the past and present of Ophelia's life, since she entered Memory House in Richmond, Virginia. She is such a wonderful person, alone, yet so giving of herself to others. She runs a small apothecary shop that may supply someone with items for beauty, a common cure, or a love potion that a weary traveler may need. Ophelia has many memories, not all of them her own. It is time for the passing of the sword. Could Annie be the one she has been looking for?

Annie will find herself on Ophelia's doorstep, after a failed relationship.

Michael, her boyfriend is a super jerk, taking advantage of her desire for a relationship and her easy nature. He trots through life as if he is her gift from God and his desires are her desires. Boy is he in for a surprise as she realizes she doesn't have to have him in her life. Will she leave him? Will such an arrogant personality allow it? He was so sure he could leave and come back whenever he wanted and she would be there waiting for him.

I felt a sense of danger in the writing and the thought that maybe Michael, her ex, would come after her, but Bette Lee Crosby's dangers are more subtle.

Funny how smells can bring forth powerful memories and here at the Memory House Bed & Breakfast, they were good memories, healing memories, for Annie. Will the magic of Memory House enter her life and soothe her soul, giving her a purpose?

Ophelia and Annie quickly develop a comfortable relationship, as if it is meant to be.

Bette Lee Crosby has a way of giving you comfort when bad things happen. Sometimes I need to be reminded of the simple pleasures in life and her writing does that for me.

As per Bette Lee Crosby's books I have read in the past, the story ends with tears of happiness swelling in my eyes. Another wonderful heart warming story of love, life, pain and sorrow, and the path her characters must walk through in life.

I received Memory House in return for an honest review.

Finished this sweet, lovely book with a smile on my face and an overpowering crave for dandelion tea. Also, I seriously want to plant a garden filled with herbs and flowering plants so I may experience the magic of hibiscus, lemon verbena, and jasmine. I'm not certain about the effects of such herbs and plants but I can tell you that I did find Memory House to be utterly enchanting. I have always dreamed of owning my own Bed and Breakfast, so Bette's story resonated strongly with me. I love the fact that this bed and breakfast brought an old and young woman together. The bond they shared was as sweet as the dandelion tea Ophelia served. This book, given to me by the author, is the first I've read by Crosby. So enjoyable. In one form or another, Crosby cleverly weaves a tiny hint of each day one of her books into Memory House . Now, I need to know everything. How do the memories tie each story together? I'm not sure. What I do know is that I'll be reading Spare Change next. Like Annie, I look forward to discovering more about the objects and memories of Ophelia and her Memory House

If you enjoy books by Sarah Addison Allen, you will probably like Bette Lee Crosby's books, too. I know I do. If you can't get enough of sweet southern tales, Bette has three book series to entertain the happy reader.

Memory House Series (Books 1-5)

Wyattsville Series (Books 1-4)

Serendipity Series (Books 1-3)

I had never read a book by this author before this one, and out of all her titles, this one spoke to me, as books sometimes do.

This was a good story. I really liked Ophelia and Annie's relationship, and I can relate in a lot of ways to Annie's back story, since these last few years have been difficult for me as well, with lots of changes.

I also liked the concept of a memory house and only keeping things that speak to you personally. As well as, listening to them in order to get the story of the object. This was where the magical realism took place, and reminded me a bit of Sarah Addison Allen, another author who's books I have enjoyed as well.

What I didn't like so much was the preachy tone it sometimes took on. It seemed to me as if something happened and then the next paragraph was an explanation of what just happened. This is one of my major pet peeves in modern literature, as I can figure out the connections on my own and draw my own conclusions, thank you very much.

After I finished this story, I realized that this is a series, and I could see myself reading the next story, in a little bit, after I read some other things.

All in all, a decent read by an interesting author.

Just to let you know, I joined the author's ARC club, and the e-book of this title was given to me, in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you and happy reading!

This very quick read was light and in it's own way quite lovely although I'm not sure I was engrossed in the story as I might have expected. I remember buying this book almost a year ago thanks to one of our BT ladies saying how much she loved reading Bette Lee Crosby. I certainly wasn't disappointed but I didn't close the book with that strong desire to go back for more that I sometimes get after reading a "new to me" author. Which is kind of funny because there was something about this story that reminded me of novels I've read and loved by Cecelia Ahern. In this, as is many of her books, the reader needed to allow themselves to be carried away with a little bit of the fantastical.

Annie decides to spend a weekend at a B&B to escape the heartache associated with disintegration of a long term relationship. By sheer fluke, lets call it destiny, she winds up at the Memory house, meets and befriends 89 year old Ophelia. They strike up a genuine friendship and whilst sharing stories, secrets and the almost unbelievable magic of memories each of their lives are changed for the better.

I was interested to see the way this short novel tied together a number of other books by this author. This peaked my interest and who knows, perhaps I just might need to sample some of these.
