Strike a Fire

Rate this book
When paramedic Lyon LeBlanc saves a lightning-struck surfer, his life changes forever in a way no one could have expected. He wakes up in a hospital room with his patient's arm wrapped to his own for some reason and his life goes off the rails from that point.

Travis Hyland lives on and in the ocean. The waves of salt water call to him and he answers, even when a storm is heading to shore. Waking in the hospital, he has a new scar and a new friend. Or maybe more.

The Change occurs within hours. With news reporters breathing down their necks, the two men flee to Trav's beach house. Word gets out anyway and not everyone is pleased by the news.

The families of both handle the situation in distinctly different ways. Being the first dragon shifters in over 1500 years sparks flares all over the world and shifters of all kinds seem to come out of the woodwork.

That’s it... I am broken... and I’m obviously into torture...

I wanted this book to be so good. The plot drew me in and I WANTED to know what happened next. I really did, the plot was so good and semi unique. But the writing and execution was atrocious. I wanted to give up on this book so bad but at the same time I wanted to know what was going to happen. Pure torture...

Sorry my peeps I did try writing a full fledged review but unfortunately it was pretty much full of mockery and sarcasm. I believe this is a debut novel so I do not feel like dragging anyone down when they decided to give a go at something the hopefully love. Who know maybe one day this will be a favorite author.

Anyways I deleted that review and will give a quick run down on a few things that bothered me.
-Long winded sentences describing everything rather than just letting it flow.
-flat, depthless characters, we were told so many emotions about but I didn’t feel any accept annoyance.
- multiple povs. I am a person that enjoys multiple povs, but those povs need to have something to do with the actual plot. This story could have done without the reporter, JJs sister, possibly even Ky’s POV. All these extra povs did was show the authors lack of being able to show without telling. Being without those povs and being about 60 pages shorter would not have hurt this book in the least.

I wanted to like this book. The plot sounded interesting on the surface, but I didn't like the writing style at all, the characters felt flat and artificial, I couldn't get into the story or the world at all. The bigotry felt exaggerated and felt like nothing but cheap drama. The dragons' powers seemed really cool on the surface but as they stacked up, it became harder to relate and believe that these were actual, living creatures. There are some really good ideas in there, there's just too much focus on the wrong things.

So this was one of those books I just bought right when I saw it. It sounded just like the kind of thing I’d love.

I have mixed feels on this one. Some chapters were great, others I just couldn’t stand and had to skim over. The idea for this story was pretty sweet, and when I found out there could be mpreg I was super excited. BUT there were quite I few things that took away from the story for me and made it something I only enjoyed sometimes.

1. Can I get more Lyon and Travis alone time please? There is CONSTANTLY some family member or close friend (or all of the above most of the time) with the main guys, butting in intimate moments and just creating this awkward feel to their growth as a couple.

2. Why the Point of View changes? I felt like the point of view changes were completely unnecessary and contained irrelevant information to the story I WAS reading. Like maybe those are portions of other stories that should stay in a different book about those characters?

3. There was telling and showing, but a lot more telling than showing.

Those are my main 3 issues, but aside from that, Jandra struck me as an obnoxious character. She was constantly being unnecessarily rude to people for (seemingly) absolutely no reason.

For those reasons I’m rating this a 2.5 and rounding down.

I’ll be interested to see how this author improves over time.

Being a KU member, I usually borrow the books but this one piqued my interest and I found myself doing something I don’t usually do, I purchased it. Did my gamble pay off? Hell yes!

The story hooked me in instantly and I was drawn to the MCs and the drama and mystery that surrounded them.

The depth/intensity of Lyon and Travis’s bond was captured beautifully yet powerfully. The desire, passion and need burning on both ends was scorching hot and consuming. Their connection made my toes curl! Despite the challenges, drama and obstacles ahead; Lyon and Travis’s mate bond shined fiercely throughout. Their dragons were majestic yet badass and don’t even get me started on when the two dragons got down and dirty lol.

The author included various POVs and it was flawlessly done too.

There were some spelling/gramma issues but to be perfectly frank, it didn’t hinder my enjoyment in the slightest.

Im definitely adding this author to my favourite list and eagerly look forward to reading book 2 - let’s hope it’s not a long wait - keeping my fingers crossed!

I enjoyed this book start to finish. I loved all the characters especially the MCs. I really liked that this book was told from many different perspectives, not just the MCs. It made the story more interesting. I thought the author did a good job creating a new world of shifters. While there was the usual trope of mating and insta-love, it was done in a way that felt fresh to me.

The book wasn’t perfect by any means. There were formatting errors and the author needed a good editor. There were a couple of times that the author lost track of the story thread and got the characters mixed up. Still despite the flaws, this was a highly enjoyable book. Even though the book was pretty long, there were still some dangling plot threads at the end. I really hope that the author continues this series. Overall, a really great book.

So freaking awesome

A great series starter, these MCs were so engaging and they are surrounded by an amazing group of secondary characters. I absolutely loved the storyline. This was so good that as soon as I finished I was ready for the next book, it seriously can't come soon enough.

This book is almost 3D in it's concept as it takes one's senses into a somewhat unique rendering of the shifter landscape.Where is the sequel?

I practically read this in one sitting. It's always exciting to discover a new author -- especially one named "author writer" in Russian and Estonian. The synopsis would almost lead one to think the main characters have to remain in physical contact with one another throughout the book. That's not the case. Don't let that perception keep you from reading this book.
I enjoyed the range of characters as well as the author's ability to describe a reality in which shifters are known to the world. The author deftly accomplishes world building without being too heavy handed.
If you like well written m/m shifter stories with sex, love, well written characters, action, conflict and the promise of more to come, this is for you.

Great start, full of worldbuilding but not a lot of action yet

This book felt a bit like the beginning of an epic fantasy series where you keep being introduced to new characters and nothing really happens; it's all just setting the stage for later developments.

Having said that, I really think that I like where this series will be going and I am excited to read more in this world, and with Lyon & Travis specifically.

It was odd to have both characters being 100% straight before their mating - I both liked how they had to adapt to a new paradigm and I felt a little cheated that we kept being reminded of their former heterosexuality. In some ways, they seemed to accept it too easily in the beginning, and have random panic attacks about it after coming to terms with their new reality. It became distracting for me.

Overall, I liked the story and I will definitely read the next book, I just hope that the plot moves along a bit in the next book.

I really found myself pulled into this book. The world building was unusual. The characters unique and well developed. I loved it, but I could see areas that might bother others.

The story shifts often using multiple points of view.It is always clear from whom's POV. I liked seeing the different perspectives and motivations, though even I wasn't sure of the purpose for a few. Also, those sensitive to editing and proofing issues could struggle. I was thrown out a few times, but not so much that it dampened my enjoyment. I have definitely read books within the m/m genre with much worse editing than this one.

The story is sweeping and leaves open the possibility of further books. I look forward to reading more about all the characters and their world. If you like dragons and shifters, take a chance on this one.

Can't wait for book 2

I loved all of the characters, main and support. I thought they spent a little too much time in the hospital, but I guess it really did solidify the importance of the insta mate bond thing. Can't wait to see who takes center stage in book 2! I'm hoping it's Ky (not with Raev tho) or Jorge (the First??)! Following this author for sure.

Lyon and Travis and Dragons, oh my!

I gave this book a 5-star rating because it peaked my interest with Twist on shifters. I liked the insta-love but they still had to work out they relationship. I like the plot twist and I like all the action. I will be looking forward to the next book in the series.

Excellent new shifter series

Very enjoyable read. Love the idea and where this book can go. Needs a little editing help with the Eion but all in all a good read.

DNF @ just under 25% mark. The advertising blurb promised a really interesting premise. I struggled to get past the multiple-POV chapter approach which extended beyond the MCs to minor secondary characters! I like fantasy tales about dragons, I like plots involving dragon-drama/action - dragons who can take on human forms, I OK about urban shifter-fantasy/crime. This went round and around in confusion for the first few chapters focusing on the 'how am I so deeply in love/connected with another guy' when I am straight ... I did not connect to either Lyon or Trav, was annoyed by their family members and just gave up in the end.

I feel like there was nothing wrong with this book. Everyone else seemed to like it. Maybe there’s something I missed, or maybe I’m picky. But I just had such high hopes for this and they came crashing down. I was really turned off by the switching of POVs and the fact that it was SO LONG and hardly anything happened. None of my questions were answered. I got tired of asking questions....Maybe the next one will be better.

Good Shifter M/M

I greatly enjoyed this author, whom I have never read before. I liked the added twist of the main characters not being gay until one is struck by lightning, which activated his shift and that of his mate. I noticed it is book 1, I look forward to book 2 and hope Raev gets his HEA.

Great story

This was one of my favorite insta-love fated mates stories. It was just so sweet!! And pretty unique. I felt like the story wasn’t rushed and the progression made sense. All the characters were great and I didn’t mind the POV switching to different characters (both main and side). I’m really hoping there is a sequel to this book!

Very good read

Always a risk reading a new author but this book paid off. Great and varied characters, who show a remarkable amount of depth in single book this size. Lots of plot tension that keeps you wanting to know more about the story, the world and its denizens.

Surprise!

Well, I’m just going to say WOW! I wasn’t sure what I was expecting but this was so much more then that. There are stories that drag you in and don’t let go. This is one of those. I’m hopeful for more. Sad to see this was the only one!

Well...

That was a decent kick-off to a new shifter series. It ended very abruptly, which always makes me a little crazy, but I’m guessing the next book is in the near future.

Mpreg is possible in this universe. Guess I'll have to figure out I feel about that before I decide if I wanna finish this or not....
