A world without fire. Three sizzling shifters. One flame-haired hustler. And the elemental bond that could bring fire back to the world, or be the end of them…
The last Phoenix has perished in a huge blaze of flames, extinguishing fire from the earth. Ranger Mason is a nineteen-year-old shifter whose spirit animal has not yet been fixed. An orphan, hustler and part-time exorcist, she scrapes a living in a dangerous, burned-out world, with no idea of the unique power she holds. That is, until a sexy tiger, bear and eagle shifter trio bursts into her life, convinced she’s the key to recreating fire.
What none of them realizes is that she's no fire elemental, but something even more rare and special…something that will create the strongest possible bond between them, but also threaten to destroy her. Ranger is the only one capable of uniting a dragon with the three water, earth and air elementals, but as the love bond between the four of them ignites, the guys are unwilling to risk her safety—even if it means restoring balance to the world.
But Rael, Zain and Oran are not the only ones who have discovered Ranger’s gifts, and suddenly the decision is torn from their hands. Will she be able to create peace between her three mates, who have vowed to do anything to protect her, and a dragon intent on keeping her in his cave as his personal, flame-haired treasure?

It’s not that the book was bad really. It was just kind of meh. Ranger the FMC is a Lone Ranger pun intended. She makes her living by exercising echos of past spirits sometimes conning people sometimes it’s real. Everyone has lost so much in this world after the fires of the last Phoenix shifter rampaged the land. Now no one can produce fire for more than seconds. Ranger is kidnapped by a group of shifters and told she must help them bring balance to the elements. After finding out she isn’t exactly what they are looking for, she becomes exactly what they need calming the pain that the last decades have brought upon them. Basically there was some lust at first sight. Hardly any real action. Everyone ends up mated. Of course everyone loves ranger because they are drawn to her element. Even the dragon doesn’t put up a fight. Like I said kind of meh. I really liked the dystopian feel but it really just didn’t go anywhere. And at the end it’s like ok now what?

1 shifter believes the death of the last Phoenix 5 years ago is the reason the world has been turned to ashes by fire never to be seen again......Fire
Tiger shifter Rael believes in the books his wise old grandfather left him and is set on a mission with his loyal friends, if they don't accomplish it the world will never return to what it once was
Only the balance of the 5 elements and the creation of the new phoenix will bring order to the world again and 3 shifters of different species all representing 3 of the 5 elements, earth, water and air are on a mission to accomplish this. Zain a bear shifter, Rael Tiger shifter and Oran a Golden Eagle shifter have sought and found the one they think will create the balance needed to save the world. Problem is Ranger having been on her own and very weary of all since the fires, doesn't believe their crazy story and is not convinced of her power.. They have to convince her that seeking their 5th is the only way, but will Ranger accept that she is a powerful and rare shifter and that they are bound to become mates, not only with them, but there is a 5th that will complete them and save the world?
Follow these unlikely mates on their journey to seek and try to save the world by bringing the fire again.
I found this an interesting start to the series. I like the plot idea of the phoenix dying and no new phoenix being born in the flames. I also love how the author uses that as a reason the world no longer has fire or electricity. The characters are interesting. I love the contrast in the guys characters. They are all so different. I really wish the reader got to know Draven more. He barely got any time in the story before it ended. I am curious as to how they can solve the issue of the phoenix. I am definitely gonna read the next book in the near future.
You do what you have to do to survive in a baron world. Ranger is living her life the only way she knows how until 3 strangers step into her life and everything changes. The 3 strangers help her discover who she truly is and protect her fiercely. Discovery, love, and adventure awaits them.
Great first book into this new world. If you like shifters, hot sexy alphas and hot steamy sex scenes then this book is for you. I really liked it and can't wait to read more.
I give this book points for originality, but it didn't really go anywhere. Ranger found her true form, and mates. Shouldn't they be trying to save the world?
I've never been so bothered by how the main character meets her love interests. They kidnap her in the dead of night and drag her kicking and screaming LITERALLY to an undisclosed location where they proceed to be disappointed and upset that this girl they've been stalking for presumably months isn't as strong as they thought she would be. They then pretend to rape her and just when I thought it couldn't get worse they debate turning her into a broodmare to make little Phoenix babies with some random dragon. Of course only if the dragon is willing. I read a little farther ahead where Ranger is of course helpless and needs to be saved because she can't get it together to fight off a single human on her own then skimmed towards the end to see if it was even worth finishing. If the cringey "she's in heat because it's the full moon" scene was any indication it most definitely was not worth any more of my time let alone what I already wasted.

I like the underlying story. Something has happened and the earth no longer has fire, so anything that requires fire or combustion to operate doesn't exist anymore. People have perished, it's the wild west once again, but world wide. The female main character is Ranger, and honestly I kept forgetting Ranger was a girl and kept trying to remember which guy was ranger every time her name was used. Through a series of events Ranger ends up with three of the four of her guys. She is much too quick to forgive and trust in my opinion considering how they came to be together and buys into everything waaaaaaay too fast. Their relationships are pretty instant, and unfortunate laziness that a lot of paranormal writers tend to take. Instead of developing the characters and a connection it's instant connection and within days they are in love because they are fated mates. (Heavy eye roll). Once they are mates they jump more than bunny rabbits in pretty boring and repetitive sex which fortunately just peeters out into us being told she is having sex every five seconds. Seriously she would be raw from all of the sex she is suppose to be having even g shifters in this universe heal quickly (it's never addressed here. I assume they heal quickly seeing as one of them was a bloody mess and then it's never mentioned again). Oh and at one point she says "now" and they all immediately come at once. I think I legitimately injured my eyes rolling them at that one. We get some world building but not a lot of character building. We know that everyone has some significant loss and a glimpse at each guy"s past, one to two paragraphs at most, but we don't really have ages for anyone. We know two of the guys were married and one has two kids on top of being a biomechanical engineer so I'm putting him in his 30s, the other married guy and the one who was a navy seal (who btw would still be trying to hold the government together because a deal wouldn't just abandon his post) are probably mid to late 20s. The last guy is a hedge fund manager, but comes from a wealthy family, so at bare minimum, using family connections, he could be 22, but more likely is late 20s or early 30s like the other guys. Then you have Ranger who tell us she isn't old enough to drink under the old laws so something under 21, but we don't know how old other than the world has been in chaos for five years and she was old enough to be the one to run with her two younger siblings when disaster struck, but she could have been five then for all we know. There are times that she is written to come across as really up in and it makes me uncomfortable because I kept pegging her around 17 and these guys are obviously much older, so there was a creep factor when they started banging her every which way to Sunday. Additonaly the 2-3 situations created to put her in danger and.force them to realize their bond just weren't very well written, there was no real.suspense and the one in New Vegas just feels odd and out of place as does the need to try and fit in a my rich boyfriend took me shopping and bought me clothes in this new dystopian world. So that said, I'll stick around until at least book 2.
Of Ashes And Sin: A Reverse Harem Shifter Romance Fire Trails Book 1 by K.N. Knight, Ariana Hawkes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Of Ashes And Sin is a powerful Reverse Harem Shifter Romance book of the Fire Trails series. It's the great books that you enjoy so very much that makes you feel so inspired. They are also the ones that's so easy to review, I really enjoyed Of Ashes And Sin. For me, it's always the characters who have flaws that I enjoythe most. Ranger Mason is a wonderful character, she is a nineteen-year-old shifter whose spirit animal has not yet been fixed. She has stumble a few times she is a orphan and a hustler who sometimes becomes a exorcist to scrape a living in a dangerous world. Rael, Zain, Oran and Draven are four sexy hot shifters that are destined to be Ranger's mates. Rael is a Tiger shifter who reads the history, Zain is a Bear shifter who has a lot of pain, Oran is a Eagle shifters who was wealthy before the fire. Draven is a Dragon Shifter his Dragon is almost feral. Their elemental bond could bring fire back to the world. Again Ariana Hawkes and K.N. Knight has created a awesome world but this time she has a partner. Of Ashes And Sin is a consuming all satisfying read, it shows how great their imagination is along with their skillful storytelling. This is a charming written story that allows the readers to understand the discovery of Ranger gifts by Rael, Zain, Oran and Draven. Ariana and K.N creates an atmosphere that full with shifter energy. I really enjoy the emotional drama throughout this story.I want my review to reflect how incredible and detailed the first book in the series is, but without giving away spoilers. Plus I feel like I have no more words to tell you how much you will enjoy this book. I'm totally excited about reading book 2. if you’ve never read Ariana Hawkes please pick one up. If you like Paranormal Romance you’ve got quite a lot of choices. There is literally something for everyone, so please please read her work.
Ranger Mason has had to adapt to personal tragedy as well as a greatly changed world. Roughly five year ago, a series of wildfires spread across the world, destroying much of it and killing many people including Mason’s family. That devastation would be the last fire many would see, for no matter how idea the conditions, fire would no longer burn. A stranger to her own shifter heritage, Mason has been wandering from place to place surviving and using her own empathic abilities to get through life. Then she has a most unusual encounter with three other shifters and starts a new chapter in her life.
This book by K.N. Knight and Arian Hawkes is the first in what is known as the Fire Series, but is a complete tale in and of itself. I found the setup of this world to be unique, and there are many elements to it that are intriguing. The main characters are thought out, and “feel” like real people…even if the individuals are dealing with fantastic situations and powers. The book also has a good pace to it, and the romantic action between the characters is soundly written as well.
However, I did notice one particular flaw in the story that stood out in my mind. The world is one where the only fire comes from supernatural creatures…shifters with dragon aspects specifically…but guns apparently still work normally. Admittedly my knowledge of science isn’t the strongest, but I just can’t see how that would work. I do wish the setting could have been explored a little more, and there was one plot thread that got thrown out in the story that didn’t get followed up on. I would guess that this twist will be part of the later works, but even so…I felt like something important had been missed. So I can’t say that this book is perfect, but it is an entertaining read and worth the time it would take to read it.
(I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from Romance Authors That Rock. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)
It's been five years since the last phoenix died in a burst of flames that took a large portion of the world and all fire with it. Ranger Mason was young when fire left the world, taking her family with it. She's been on her own for five years, using her rare ability to see and feel the pain of others (past and present) to keep her fed and occasionally a nights sleep under a roof with a bed.
She's felt like she's been followed for years, but she never sees anyone around no matter how strong the feeling is. That all changes one night when 3 men come into the boarding house that she is resting in for the night. She's done well surviving on her own but even she can't fight off 3 men when they insist on abducting her for their master plan to bring fire back into the world.
The first 65% of the book went quite well. I liked the pace of the story and the growing relationships with the three men. After that it felt like the author pressed fast forward and everything went quickly for the last 35%. The introduction of a fourth man and his addition to their group didn't have nearly enough buildup to understand why he was equal to Oran, Zain, and Rael.
The blurb at the beginning of the book mentioned this was a standalone. I'm not quite sure that was how it ended though. Many unanswered questions. Who is Carrie? What about the fire? I think this had potential to be a 4 or 5 star read if we had seen a bit more of the characters and their experiences over the last 5 years. We get a glimpse of the horrors they experienced but not enough to explain the pain Ranger often saw in their eyes. Otherwise I enjoyed it enough to give book 2 a chance.
3.75 on Goodreads scale I'm not the biggest fan of shifter romances - I have to be in the right mood - but I read a small sample of this book and was intrigued so requested an ARC and overall was very pleased with the book. I do tend to like dystopian or apocalypse type settings and this one has the latter so that was a huge plus for me, in addition to the reverse harem, which has been my favorite since before people called it that. I liked the heroine, Ranger, and really liked the world/setting the characters were in. She is kidnapped by three shifters who have a plan to solve what they think caused the apocalypse and I was ecstatic not only that she was uncomfortable with them at first but also that one of them was against her in the beginning as well. It is really difficult to list all of the things I liked about this book without spoilers - and I really think it is best if you go into it without spoilers, like I did. I am smiling just thinking about some stuff that happened, especially toward the end.
Though this is not what I would term a "fast-burn", as a fan of the slowest burn/long game I do wish some things could have been drug out a little longer - more scenes between Ranger and her guys getting to know and interacting with each other before physical encounters/emotional declarations would have amped up my anticipation and enjoyment. Knowing there is a second book I think there was a good opportunity for that here with one or two of the guys. The book is written well, with a relatively small amount of errors, and I am looking forward to the next one in the series.
Of Ashes and Sin had such a strong start. I loved the concept behind the world and the plot; a world ravaged by wildfires and yet, for the five years following the devastation, no one in that world is able to create fire. Ranger is such a strong character; she’s a shifter and she’s resilient, a survivor determined to get through each day. And then Ranger is kidnapped, manhandled, thrown about (quite literally), and scared by three other shifters - albeit hot male shifters - and that’s where everything starts to go downhill.
Ranger, after being kidnapped, manhandled, thrown about... you get what I’m saying. Well, after Ranger is quite literally scared into shifting, she lets all that go with only a few grumbles about being a lone traveller and falls for her harem. So that didn’t sit right with me but what really made the relationship between Ranger and the three male shifters seem forced, was the jilted and clumsy dialogue between them. I did not feel the connection in the harem at all.
Knight and Hawkes’ world building and creativity got me through until the last ten minutes of the book, once Ranger met the final member of the harem I gave up and put my kindle down. However, DNFing it with only ten minutes to go is insanity so two days later I compressed the ten minutes into five and completed Of Ashes and Sin.
This is an original RH with plenty of steam, shifters (of varying kinds), and further supernatural elements, set in an apocalyptic world. I found the relationship and the dialogue forced but the world building makes it worthwhile giving this book a go. In my opinion, I think this book would make a better movie.
This pair of authors have brought a new twist to the shifter realm with this wonderful tale of struggles and love. After the devastation of the fires due to the death of the last phoenix, and the loss of what was the rest of her family, Ranger has adopted the life of a nomad, not sure of where she's heading, or what or who, she's seeking. When she's abducted by a trio of shifters, she knows she's in trouble, just not the reasons why. Zain, Oran and Rael have been on Ranger's tail for quite some time when they finally make their move. The belief that she is the "fire" piece missing from their foursome that will hopefully restore earth to the way it was, they whisk her away and try and explain what their plan is. But, as Fate always seems to like the upper hand in life, they discover that not only is she a missing link, but that there is yet another that they will need to find in order to have their plan put into place. Will they all manage to agree at some point? Or will they continue to butt heads along the way? Loved this book and am looking forward to more from this pair of very talented authors! I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily giving my honest opinion.
Note: I received an advanced review copy in exchange for my honest review.
I wasn’t sure how the story would progress or if I’d like the story based on the synopsis. I have read reverse harem books before, so was really curious how Ariana Hawkes would do at it.
That being said, and without any spoilers: I thoroughly liked it. I found it interesting the setting for the book and the overall plot. I liked the characters too. There’s enough twists here and there so you don’t guess how it will turn out too. It starts off slow, and I’ll point out once you get going it all comes together. I liked the pace it set as it begins to come together without an obvious “oh I know what will likely happen”.
You get a good read which if you’ve read Ariana Hawkes you’ll know she is a good writer. This book (series) is so far becoming after just this book one of my top books of hers.
If you like reverse harem, a fan of the author - either way I put say it’s worth reading if you like paranormal romance at all, definitely a good read.
K.N. Knight and Ariana Hawkes are new authors for me, but based on their Of Ashes And Sin (Fire Trails Book 1), I’m promising myself that we will become well acquainted. This novel is just what fantasy fans who love reverse harem romance action need. It truly is, quite simply, wonderful. Drama, intrigue ... and really hit sex. This tale had just what I wanted and was well written and with a great plot that had a truly “genuine” feel to it. Ranger Mason, the lead here, is perfectly crafted and yummy guys, Rael, Zain and Oran plus the rest of her supporting cast are also superb. A dragon and water, earth and air elementals. How can you beat that combo? But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommended and I’m definitely looking forward to book 2.
I really liked this story. Book 1 is a very sexy reverse harem story with a cool concept that will make a great series in my opinion. It starts out 5 years after fire has disappeared from the world and reads like an end of the world / dystopian story but is so much more. I loved the world concept and the story of 3 very sexy shifter friends from different species getting together to try and save the world. They find Ranger and hope she is what they need to save the world. It was fun as this story sets up the world conditions as they travel around and try to survive. Add in some very hot sex scenes between Ranger and her men separately and together and it is a sexy romance. I liked it so much I read it in one sitting as I was sucked into the story and had to see what would happen next and what would be revealed next too. I loved the very sexy story and the world that I was introduced to here. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
Excellent start to what appears to be an interesting new take for a shifters book
It seems as though the same shifter stories are being written over and over again but this is definitely a new spin and while I was left with questions the knowledge that this is only book one means I'll most likely get the answers.
Now... Yes it's a reverse harem, so of course there is more men than women... But it's done very well. It's not a tasteless massive orgy. And every page isn't just sex either - thank God. Knight and Hawkes do a wonderful job of telling the building relationships story and build the coming story line as to whether Ranger is truly the one element that can help restore balance in the world.
I'm SO glad I took a chance and read this book. This is book one of a new series and I wasn't sure about it but I'm so glad I jumped in and did.
Ranger is a woman who is alone in the world and has to use her powers to earn money for food and shelter. One night she meets three men who kidnap her and from this meeting a new adventure starts.
I loved all three of the guys. I liked that at their base level they are all similar but yet so different. I like that there is an understanding between them and while there is a little jealous its nothing significant. After meeting the 4th, the three guys and Ranger have to adjust to this new normal but once they do it's magnetic.
While this is a darker romance it does have lighter moments. It is a highly enjoyable read. It will keep you on your toes as it is unpredictable completely original story! The wonderful Characters will keep you entertained as they seduce and travel to find the final male of their set!! Not only is the book got a great plot but the sexy bits are steam as all get out.
It is a whimsical, informative action packed pager turner of a future world that has a super realistic look at the world without fire. It does have some twists you just do not see coming and about the time you think one thing happens another will so it is a great world building story!! While this is book 1 of a set it does not really end with a cliffhanger. But I am so into it I can not wait till the next installment.
Although I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next, I felt some things in this book took away some of its potential. First I did not care for the main characters first encounter. Not at all. Hardly any apologies for throwing her around and such. Second, although I loved the differences in their relationship, I wish there was a more defined way for the mating. It was almost like they shrugged their shoulders and said welp we are mated. There were no small clues or hints as to someone watching them and I think it would of added to the story a bit. Other than that I loved the story line, and the characters for the most part. There wasn't much action but the story flowed really well. I couldn't put it down and read it pretty fast.
Wow what an amazing Reverse Harem story by these two authors. Ranger is a shifter but she doesn’t know what her true shift is yet, she meets 3 sexy shifter who kidnap her they believe that if they get a dragon shifter ( fire ) then that will be all of the elements to bring a Phoenix back into this terrible world. I loved this story everything was very well detailed and that is a great thing for this story, a fantastic new series and a great collaboration between these two terrific authors. A 5 plus ⭐️ read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read, and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
AND THE WHEELS KEEP ROLLING!!! Ok guys, are you ready? Here we go straight off the deep end. If you're looking for a read with excitement, adventure and all the heat you can handle. Congrats my friends you've just stepped off in it. The characters are intriguing, complex and well developed. Their personalities are refreshing and bold. The scenes are so vividly detailed that it paints one interesting backdrop that you can totally visualize. Twists and turns abound with unexpected surprises that will keep your attention from start. Knight and Hawkes did a remarkable job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Great job guys thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
This story has an interesting premise - fire has left the world with the death of the last Phoenix. Zain, Rael, and Oran -3 shifters- have a theory how to get it back, and so abduct Ranger. I like Ranger - she has attitude, resilience, and smarts. I feel like the romance move a little too quickly, especially considering how they tried to “help” her find her true form. I don’t get why they didn’t just try to talk with her first. Also, I felt like the parts with Draven were just too rushed. While, I thought some of her relationship with the other 3 guys moved quickly, I could see some progression. I am intrigued nought that I will be watching to book 2.
Of Ashes And Sin is a great beginning to what is sure to be a fab series about a group of animal shifters, mated to each other, trying to find the link needed to better their world. I had a hard time putting this book down to deal with the real world. There is tons of world, character and relationship building however it's done in a way that doesn't have the reader drowning in words. Now that the characters, their relationship and the world they live in has been built I can't wait to see what takes place in the next book. Great beginning to a great story!! I read an arc and willingly posted my review.
The story and characters were good. The reason I didn’t rate it a five star review was because sometimes it felt like pieces of the story didn’t unfold organically. It felt forced. Also, I would have thought there would have been more action or plot development. In my opinion, at a certain point it became so heavily focused on the relationships that the reason for the journey is a little loss in that even though they kept journeying towards the dragon lands. Finally, I thought the ending to this book was very abrupt. All that being said I’m still very intrigued by this world and curious where the authors are going to take the story.
Of Ashes and Sin is a great beginning to a new series. Ranger is a strong, capable main character that the story is centered around along with the men that make up her harem. Each one brings something different to the group in order to make them stronger. Together they hope to bring fire back to the word after devastating fires raged across the land. The characters are strong and the relationships develop kinda slow at first and then gain speed. I like the plot of the story as well as the characters. Interested to find out how their story progresses and will they be the saviors the world needs.
