HEATHER MARIE ADKINS writes too much but still too little. She also has too many cats, not enough tequila, and a torrid love affair with procrastination.
With a penchant for the paranormal, Heather spends her days fueled by coffee, Ancient Aliens, and true crime podcasts. She resides in an unfortunately-not-haunted Queen Anne in southern Indiana with a sarcastic husband who is entirely too dependent on puns.
When she’s not plotting her next book or herding felines, she's researching the spookier aspects of history for her podcast, Historically Weird. Find out more about her at heathermarieadkins.com.
Good book that can be read as a standalone or as an introduction to the Vampire Angel series. But is also a nice read even if you have already read the series as it gives you some background information about one of the characters in the series.
3 stars overall. Individually ranked, added together and divided by 11 (# of stories)
Saffron - Heather Marie Adkins: Interesting concept where a dying human can add five years to their life by contracting as an assassin with the goddess Nemesis. At the end of the contract there is the option to sign on for an additional five years, die or in exceptional cases, be made immortal. Saffron is assigned a case to wreck vengeance on a pair of adults who have been kidnapping little girls for porn and torture flicks. Story has a rather unexpected ending which if sufficiently interested, requires reading another book in the series. 4 stars
Water Witch - RJ Blain: Blood in the Water: Our protagonist is kidnapped by criminals seeking vengeance because his Chief of Police father imprisoned them in the past. They have the nefarious plan to shoot him and throw him overboard into shark infested waters. All does not go as planned. Dustin, said protagonist, discovers that he may not only have inherited traits from his werewolf, AKA Feneric, father, but witching abilities through his mother. Fishnet Stockings: Dustin is held hostage at a bank along with others by a man wearing a fishnet stocking as a disguise. The Water's Call: As a result of the previous two incidents, Dustin's parents practically have him under house arrest. His injury from the first story caused him to miss a semester of college. Thanks to his father's manipulations he's earning college credits towards a Forensic Science degree by working at the morgue. Chafing at the restrictions, Dustin takes advantage of an unexpected early time off to hop on a bus and travel to Long Beach, California. He meets yet another Feneric who owns a surfboard shop and makes arrangements to take surfing lessons once he learns how to swim. There's no danger other than the potential to drown or being murdered for running away in this story. 2 1/2 stars
The Golden Dragon - J. A Culican: A young woman finds out she is a rare type of dragon and is whisked off by a dragon of a different subspecies to meet the powers that decree dragons' fates. It seems geared towards young teens. There was a hint that her college professor may be more than he seemed but this story never elaborated on that possibility. 1 star
The Curse of Elliott Jones - Christine Ashworth: Now this story has some bite to it. The main character and his cohorts all have a common mysterious past and special abilities. I've read books that weren't a continuing series that had less satisfying endings. This one pretty well wraps up the current scenario but there are additional volumes worth looking into. 5 stars
Before the Falls - Heather Renee: This was a light hearted good v. bad story where our warrior "princess" and her two buds are sent to vanquish an evil dragon. They encounter both friends and foes along the way before the ultimate battle. 2 1/2 stars
Vampire Secret - Rosemary A. Johns: This was a story that although I understood the plot, I felt there was more to it than I was able to ken. Fallen angels are turned into vampires and then witches turn them into familiars. "Good" angels capture the fallen ones to return them to Angel World where they are punished. Is there redemption? I don't know. If not, why not just annihilate them. Did the witches really worship the fallen angels? Again, I wasn't given enough background to know for sure. Overall just a weird story. 2 stars
Redcap - Amanda Booloodian: An entertaining if not compelling read. The female lead can access something called the Path which seems to be a parallel universe that gives her more insight than normal. Her soul had been shattered in an earlier adventure and makes it uncomfortable for others to be around her. The same is true for her elf and werewolf partners. They are investigating the disappearance of a group of pixies and why goblins are moving about when they usually hunker down during the winter. The case is solved but a new one emerges once they return to base. 3 1/2 stars
The Fallen Vampire - Beata Blitz: Chole, a 17 year old girl, is labeled as a witch when she inadvertently influences a game of spin the bottle. Destined to be burned at the stake she is rescued by her best friend/crush who intends to spirit her away to a safe location. At one point there is a battle in the air between the ruling drakonin, called Cloud Lords, and the demon Night Flyer vampires. A prince of the vampires is injured and falls to earth. The posse in pursuit catches up to our escapees but a troop of the governor's men intercedes and prevents them from taking Chole. The conclusion piqued my interest enough that I probably will pursue the rest of the story. 4 1/2 stars
Shaman States of America: The Black Spur Hunt - Chrishaun Keller-Hanna: Interesting plot but I felt like I should have either discovered character traits earlier in the story or read a previous volume. The map's qualities became clearer as the story progressed. The sisters' paternal heritage was somewhat confusing as was their dead but still present and ass-kicking mother, Mama Ray. Can't help but feel sorry for Kyla and her misguided attempt to resurrect Baylee. 3 1/2 stars
Wendigo - Amir Lane: Who knew there were male sirens? Not me, that's for sure. Our protagonist has both hex witch and technosorcery abilities and his RCMP partner is a siren. So are both his former lover and current husband so apparently they're a lot more common than I thought. Elias, our hero, is assigned the task to find and eliminate a wendigo that has been causing vacationers to disappear from a campground. I found it very interesting that each of his tattoos could manifest a particular ability. Very cool. 4 stars
Blood in the Ashes - Caroline A. Gill: Hmm, I found this to be a somewhat convoluted tale with characters not being what they initially seemed. It held my interest in that I am curious to see how it all turns out. The epilogue is rather strange. Our main character, Tristan, doesn't seem to be aware of his second wife's real persona. I'm suspecting the foreign exchange students are also more than they seem. 4 stars
This review only relates to Wendigo by Amir Lane Main character is Elias Harper who has a cameo appearance in Bad Omen (Morrighan House Witches Book 2). Wendigo follows Rogue Recruit (initially published in Darklight and Daydreams anthology), which describes how RCMP was trying to recruit Elias into their Witch Unit. When the reader reaches Wendigo, which happens three years into his working with the RCMP, they have a good idea where Elias and his partner, Taylor, are coming from. Wendigo is an exciting adventure, and a great way to calm down from a reading high caused by Morrighan House Witches series. The tone is more upbeat because Elias is a more upbeat character. I loved the stories, and I would love to read more about Elias, Taylor and their adventures.

Zachriel left Angel World when he became addicted to the human world. A house of witches adopted him into their fold. The Commander has been sent to retrieve Zachriel to bring him back to face the consequences of his choices. At the house, the witches just saved him from capture and think to teach him a lesson. Belowground, he discovers a vampire…one of the fallen angels! Now, he has to make a dreadful choice…save her or the witches? Which will it be? Plus, he discovers some dreadful secrets that will help him make his final choice. This is a deep novella that shows the darkness of the characters…and the light of one! The ending has you pondering what happens to Zachriel after he makes his choice! It is a good fast read that introduces you to Rosemary John’s world of vampires and angels! I received this book as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.
Omg. I loved it...i want a rebel. Love how we finally see how he got to the witches. Thank you rosemary again for an amazing story. 5 stars and a must read.
Adkins, Heather Marie. Saffron. Marion Churchman serves Nemesis as an assassin. Interesting plotting and charactorization.
Blain, AJ. Son of a Werewolf, Dustin Waller begins to develop witch powers. Interesting plotting and charactorization.
Culican, JA. The Golden Dragon. Eva, raised by grandparents, meets Cairo, who says she a Dramon, or half human half Dragon. She seems to have unusual powers for a Dramon. They set out to meet the Council to evaluate more about her powers. Fair plotting and charactorization.

My favorites were Saffron, Water Witch, Curse of Elliott Jones, and Red Cap.
All of the short stories were unique, but these stood out the most to me. Very well written, and the characters come to life on the page. I didn't want to stop reading. Each one of them, I flipped back, hoping I would find a sequel. Elliott Jones, that one I learned is a companion novel to a series I will most definitely be checking out. The world building was not only unique, but exceptional! The characters and their backgrounds--I just couldn't get enough. I can say the same about the other aforementioned books as well. Red Cap is also a companion novella. I enjoyed it, especially the humor. The first chapter had me laughing. Great book! All of them were. I give the set 5 stars overall.
I really thought this book would be a lot different and better than it was. I'm not sure what bothered me the most, but a bunch of little things just added up. Between all the spelling and grammar errors to the strange jump one story made, not to mention that next to none of the other books by the authors are even on Kindle Prime or Book Funnel, it's disappointing all around. I don't expect every series to be "Free" but just the first book? Out of 22? Just to see if it is my thing. If not, I don't feel ripped off and/or cheated by the author. I am raising 4 special needs children, books are a luxury for me. If I'm paying for it, it's only because I'm buying it new, in paperback, by one of my favorite authors. You can't become a favorite if I never get to read you.
Or, if you like, swimming with sharks though Dustin Walker doesn’t know how to swim. So I got myself into a shifter novelette. Father is termed a fenerec--a type of werewolf, the name is Hungarian; mother is a witch. When not growling pop is a police chief. When bad guys attempt to feed Dustin to the sharks they turn on the bad guys and nudge Dustin to shore.
If you can buy into the genre the book is well written and edited.
If it is a collection, anthology or box set I am always buying them and hoping that I find new authors to read! This collection was bought because it had books that were part of series that I definitely wanted to read as well as a few stories that I wanted to read just from this set!
Raven's Fall by Eva Chase This story is about one of Odin's ravens, Muninn. It also explains why she did to Odin. Muninn has another side she doesn't care for but after meeting three exiles all different types she changes her mind. 4.8 🌟
This is definitely one of the best anthologies I've read lately. Each of the authors offers something worth reading, although I've read one of the stories before or something very similar.
Saffron - Heather Marie Adkins: ★★★ Interesting concept, but the ending was annoying. What's the point in putting an author's note stating don't read the epilogue if you don't like cliffhangers when the end without the epilogue is still a cliffhanger?
Water Witch - RJ Blain: ★★★ While I enjoyed it, it's really three short stories instead of the three-chapter story I was expecting, so it loses some depth due to length
The Golden Dragon - J.A. Culican: ★★ Ok, but not really a stand-alone story; more of an introduction to a series
The Curse of Elliott Jones - Christine Ashworth: ★★ Well written, but it read like a sequel where I was expected to already know the characters so I found myself skimming when the story became difficult to follow
Before the Falls - Heather Renee: ★ Not a fan. The plot was shallow and the characters didn't act their age
Vampire Secret - Rosemary A. Johns: ★ I did not enjoy the writing; it was a disjointed mix of formal, casual, and awful accents
Redcap - Amanda Booloodian: ★★★ It took a while for me to get into the story, but I liked it by the end. However, it struggles as a stand-alone and would probably be stronger if you've read the previous book in the series
The Fallen Vampire - Beata Blitz: ★ Reads like a bad young-adult book
Shaman States of America: The Black Spur Hunt - Chrishaun Keller-Hanna: ★ Not my cup of tea; I skimmed most of the story
Wendigo - Amir Lane: ★★★ Liked it. The trans character was unexpected since the other stories in the collection aren't LGBT
Blood in the Ashes - Caroline A. Gill: ★ Well written, but I did not enjoy the story or characters
