Balance Like a Pirate: Going beyond Work-Life Balance to Ignite Passion and Thrive as an Educator

Rate this book
If you relate to those sentiments, you know that in today’s 24/7, always-on culture, life feels busier than ever before. That hectic pace combined with the constant demands that come with being an educator create the perfect conditions for burnout. But life doesn’t have to be that way.
Balance Like a Pirate, a Lead Like a PIRATE Guide, was written by educators for educators with a focus on helping you create a lifestyle that allows you to break free from “shoulds” and “have tos.” Educational leaders Jessica Cabeen, Jessica Johnson, and Sarah Johnson equip you with practical strategies and tools to thrive in every area of life.

Okay, so if you co-wrote a book, you should count that as a read on your 50 book challenge , right?

Balance Like a Pirate is a manifesto that we may not have everything, but we can get what we need. The three of us set out on a journey to find ways to thrive in the business of work, family life, professional pursuits and our own passions. Fueled with stories from the field we hope this book offers educators opportunities to reflect on ways in which they can reclaim joy, passion and immerse them in life to the fullest extent.

Well, being one of the co-authors, I'm obviously a tad bit biased, but I LOVE this book!!! When I was trying to change the trajectory of balance in my life I could not find any book out there that helped me in the way I needed it so that's why we wrote this book. This book is a labor of love that documents our journeys and ongoing conversations for us to each become the best version of ourselves-for our school, for our family, for ourselves. I have reread this book front to back several times for revision/editing purposes, but enjoyed it every time.

I’ll be reading this book again, and possibly again, and again. It was as if I was dusting in a circle of teacher friends discussing life and solving problems together. BLaP was purchased by our principal for us teachers. I’m forever grateful for the real life positive approach of the book to help us all balance this wild ride of Life.

So often you read books and articles about balancing life and work, as a teacher you think “yeah right”. This book tells you 100% balance isn’t possible, it’s honest and filled with so many wonderful suggestions!

Very conversational style, easy read, nothing truly ground-breaking but nice to hear stories from other educators.
