Quarterling: The Story of a Rebel

Rate this book
Seventeen-year-old Fay Comyenti has it all: lots of freedom, great parents, a budding romance, and super animal abilities most can only dream of. Only, those powers have to be kept a secret in order for her kind to stay safe. After being rejected by her love interest, Elodyn, Fay leaves her village to do some good with her skills in the world despite the concerns of her comyenti mother and human father.

Zemandu, the last of the tracar people has been following Fay from a distance for a good reason. The demoness is dying. Attracted by the girl's altruistic mission, her abilities, and her benevolent energy she sees Fay as her last hope.
When Fay and Zemandu -- two powerful women of a very different nature, yet both the last of their kind -- cross paths, they'll forever change the course of humanity, but at what cost?

Will Fay risk losing her heart and her innate empathy to the tracar-- the very characteristics what makes her a comyenti in the first place --without jeopardising her vital mission?

Follow Fay and Zemandu in this suspenseful, romantic, yet dramatic YA novel which is a full standalone spin-off novel from the popular Comyenti Series.

"This is a story about power --what it is to have it, what it is to use it, and what it is to discover that no matter how much you have or how strong it is, there is always something that has power over you."
-- Pat Cadigan, editor of 'The Forgotten Beasts of Eld' by Patricia A. McKillip

My Kindle Unlimited subscription is ending in two days so I’m trying to squeeze some last books in. This being a YA fantasy book I thought it would be right up my alley. Unfortunately, I never clicked with this book. The book is a good quality KU book, I just could not really get into it. The fantasy world and supernatural beings created were quite well done and unique, but not enough happened in the story. This story was very cerebral at times, with the character discussing things to death. I had to stop myself from skimming. I don’t even know that I felt there was a real point to the book. I guess the main thing I got out of it is people should be vegetarians and stop eating animals. It was not the kind of book I was looking for or expecting; very low action and too introspective for me.

I am a fan of this author's work and this book didn't disappoint. It's a spin off from the Comyenti Series (it can be read in its own right) that follows the character Faye on her journey as she leaves home for the first time to find her purpose, after being jilted by a love interest. Faye has special (Comyenti) powers and uses them to help animals that have no choice or no voice, which is a great twist on the conventional superhero narrative. As a vegan myself it is a refreshing read for a change! There are some great dialogue scenes in this between Faye and the demon, Zemandu as they wrestle with fulfilling their different missions amidst the growing feelings they have for each-other, which builds up the tension. There are lots of twists and turns along the way that will keep you glued to the pages. I eagerly await more in this series!

This was a very interesting and different read.

Fay, a Comyenti is deeply empathetic and sensitive especially where animals are concerned. Searching for some freedom she sets out from home on a quest and learns much along on the way, whilst helping some poor animals desperately in need of her assistance.

Not only does Fay have the kindest soul but she is also able to understand and taken on the abilities of those she helps.

On her travels she meets Zemandu, who is very different from herself and gives her experiences she never thought she would have. From this she learns so much about love, life and herself until she returns home.

This is a very sweet, yet deep and meaningful story that was very enjoyable and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to really feel as they read.

I received a free copy of the book from the author and voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the first time in a while since I read a fantasy book and a young adult book.

I found this to be a refreshing change to read something different from my normal genre.

The storyline was most enjoyable, taken away into a fantasy land for a few hours for the last couple of days. I enjoyed the characters. Fay was my favourite out of them. I liked her bravery and her strength. You have a little of everything in this story: sadness, sexual tension, passion amongst others.

Definitely worth a read. I already have the next book from this author on my kindle to read.

I am a huge fantasy fan and was really looking forward to read this book. It is connected to the Comyenti series (which I didn't know before reading, so I read it as a standalone and it worked pretty good). By the way it's the first book by Natasja Hellenthal that I've read and I liked it a lot.

Fay's cute and has a good heart which is deeply connected with her being a comyenti - a person who can connect with animals and earns the animal's powers. Fay is a heartbroken young woman who tries to fullfill her lifegoal - helping animals. First she's all on her own, helping, loving and slowly breaking apart because of all the badness in the world. Then she meets Zemandu, a person who's quite the opposite of her. But they're drawn together and even though this book might not be a happy ever after romance, it's a great read. I really like the changes of character and they seem to be very likely and brings the story forwards. This book keeps me thinking about its characters, their lifegoals, their changes and last but not least about its main topic - stop cruelty against animals.

Sometimes I whished the book had more suspense or some new aspects, e.g. traveling to new places, meeting new animals. Fay did that but sometimes it was a bit … not that much thrilling because some things were constantly repeated. That's why I only gave 4 stars.

But all in all I really liked the book and I warmly recommend it

This was a new genre for me to delve into so I wasn't sure what to expect but I liked it. I'm glad I took a chance on it. I think I'll have to explore more books in this genre. It was very well written and the characters well developed. The story flowed nicely. The ending was surprising but also nicely done. I'll have to check out her other books.

An amazing read

QUARTERLING is one of those books that pulls you in and doesn't release you until the end. But even then, it stays with you. This is a book that I will read again and again.

Quarterling- Lesbian Fantasy with a Purpose

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Quarterling" because it made me think seriously about some major issues while taking me on an adventure. Ms. Natasja Hellenthal's world building skills are excellent. Fay and Zemandu's love story moved me. The pain of animals, the role of power, and the responsibility of those who have power to wield it with strength and compassion are the backdrop to a deeply moving love story. Be the change you want to see in the world is another underlying theme. Strong secondary characters, both in animal and human/Comyenti form had me want to keep reading. I hope that this book starts a new series. Like other works from Ms. Natasja Hellenthal, this book emphasizes love on a deeper level and from multiple angles.
I highly recommend this for those who want a deeply satisfying romance that takes the reader places and engages in so many ways.

This was a slightly different fantasy story, but in a good way.
It is so sensitive and so beautiful how the Comyenti deal with nature and animals with their animal skills.
Fay decides to go on a big trip because her heart is broken and she has to leave the nest.
It's well written, but sometimes with a few grammar mistakes. But I received an ARC, maybe that's why it wasn't fully edited.
The characters are well crafted and the story with the surprising ending , is nicely done!

The biggest difference was, the MC may be Fay but al the animals as well and not any people with their drama and love affairs J
Zemandu is a very intresting character! I like her boldness. She’s like a light energy- vampire. Nice Fantasy character.

Hellenthal book is well written with a beautifully imagined world. The Comyenti are a very interesting but different kind of shifter and that is refreshing. This book has amazing potential. Unfortunately, for me it was low in action and I was waiting for something to happen. Fay's internal monologue is highlighted thoughout the book. The main message I got from the book was don't eat meat. Somepeople will love the book but more action is needed for myself. 3.5/5

As a vegan and a lover of fantasy I expected to love this book however it lacks simply everything. The characters are so f* boring and the story has nothing going on. I felt like I was reading a journal of an author struggling with real life issues.

Ah and guess what: we need to reform a demon to save the world ihaaaaaa 🤦🤦🤦🤦

The Comyenti series continues with this YA story about Sula and Felix's daughter, Fay. Her quest brings her to a fascinating new character, Zemandu, and they learn how to navigate their skills, while handling the consequences of their actions.
