Dhaka. 2 October 1977. A military coup is thwarted, but the exact sequence of events is shrouded in mystery. Soon after, Ayesha Begum, recovering from the birth of her second child, receives a letter from the air force stating that her husband Joynal Abedin has been sentenced to death, convicted of insurgency. But has the verdict been carried out? If it was, when and where was he executed? If he was indeed hanged, what has happened to his body? Trying to find answers to these questions, Ayesha embarks on a long and arduous quest to search for her husband, reminiscent of Behula's epic journey in her effort to resurrect her dead husband Lakhinder in the Bengali folktale Manashamangal. Set against the backdrop of a raging famine, political assassinations and coups that took Bangladesh by storm right after its independence in 1971, Anisul Hoque's The Ballad of Ayesha is as much a story of the newly created nation as it is the story of its people.

About the author

Anisul Hoque (Bangla: আনিসুল হক) is a Bangladeshi screenwriter, novelist, dramatist and journalist. He graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, trained as a civil engineer.

His inspiration in journalism and writing started during his student life. After his graduation he joined to serve as a government employee but resigned only after 15 days. Instead he started working as a journalist. He attended the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 2010. Currently, Hoque is working as an Associate Editor of a Bengali language daily, Prothom Alo.

His novel মা was translated in English as Freedom's Mother. It was published in Maithili too. He was honored with Bangla Academy Award in 2011.

প্রথমেই ধন্যবাদ জানাই সেই বন্ধুটিকে যে ব‌ইটা জন্মদিনে উপহার দিয়েছিলো। বন্ধু না দিলে পড়া হতো না ব‌ইটা কারণ আগামী দুই বছরে কেনার জন্য যেসব ব‌ইয়ের লিস্ট করেছি তারমধ্যে এই ব‌ইটা ছিলো না। দোষটা আমার না,ব‌ইটাই আন্ডাররেটেট। তেমন সুনাম শুনিনি বা নাম‌ও দুয়েকবার শুনে থাকলেও ভুলে গিয়েছি।

ব্লকে ছিলাম,আমি আবার ব্লকে থাকলেও জোর করে পড়ি। কিন্তু ভালো লাগছিলো না কিছুই। বিরক্তির সাথেই টেনে নিয়েছিলাম আয়েশামঙ্গল। ভাবলাম পড়ার দরকার নেই,চোখ বুলিয়ে যাই। অজান্তেই ব‌ইটা আমার মনোযোগ আকর্ষণ করলো,ব্লক কেটে গেলো,পড়তে শুরু করার পর কয়েক ঘন্টা ফোন হাতে নিতেও ভুলে গিয়েছিলাম।

ব‌ইয়ের প্রথম লাইনটাই সুন্দর, "মধ্যযুগের বাঙালি কবিরা লিখেছিলেন মনসামঙ্গল, স্বামীকে পুনরুজ্জীবিত করতে বেহুলার সংগ্রামের কাব্য, আর বন্দনা করেছিলেন দেবদেবীদের।
আজ এক বাঙালি লেখক বন্দনা করেছেন এক সাধারণ মানবীর, রচনা করেছেন আয়েশামঙ্গল।"

সত্য ঘটনা অবলম্বনে একটা ফিকশন। আয়েশা সাধারণ ঘরের মেয়ে, ডানপিটে,বাপের আদরের। পড়াশোনায় ভালো হ‌ওয়ায় বাবার ইচ্ছা ছিলো না তাকে তাড়াতাড়ি বিয়ে দেবার, কিন্তু আয়েশার রুপ তার জন্য কাল হয়ে দাঁড়ায় বারবার। ভালো ছেলে পাওয়ায় তাই বিয়ে দিয়ে দিতে হলো।

ছেলে করপোরাল জয়নাল আবেদীন। বিমানের চাকরি করে। আয়েশাকে দেখে বিয়ে করার জন্য পাগল হয়ে উঠলো।

সময়টা মুক্তিযুদ্ধ পরবর্তী। উন্মাতাল ঢাকায় আরো অনেকের মতোই দুইজন তরুন তরুণী ঘর বাঁধার উদ্দেশ্যে পা রাখলো।

তারপর মারা গেলেন শেখ মুজিব। আয়েশার বাবা তখন ঢাকায়। খবরটা শুনে তিনি চিৎকার করে কাঁদেন আর আয়েশা বলে, "বাবা আস্তে কাঁদেন, চারদিকে মিলিটারি। আপনার জামাইয়ের চাকরির সমস্যা হবে। আমাদের জানের ক্ষতি হতে পারে। চুপ করেন।"

বাবা আস্তে কাঁদেন। রোজা রাখেন শেখ মুজিবের আত্নার মঙ্গল কামনায়।

আয়েশা তখন এক সন্তানের মা, দ্বিতীয়জন আসতে চলেছে। সিংহাসনে জাঁকিয়ে বসেছেন জিয়াউর রহমান। ১৯৭৫ এর নভেম্বরে গৃহবন্দি অবস্থা থেকে তাকে উদ্ধার করে এনেছিলেন কর্ণেল তাহের। ১৯৭৬ এ তাকেই ফাঁসিতে ঝোলানোর আদেশ দেন জিয়াউর রহমান। ফাঁসিতে ঝোলার আগে কর্নেল তাহের একটা কথা বলে গিয়েছিলেন, "আমার মৃত্যু মানে বিপ্লবের অবসান নয়, এক বৃহত্তর যুদ্ধের সূচনা মাত্র।"

তার কথা সত্য প্রমান করতেই বোধহয় সিপাহী আন্দোলন গড়ে ওঠে। জিয়াউর রহমানকে খুন করার চেষ্টা করে তারা। তবে সফল হয় না, জনগনকে আহবান জানানোর চেষ্টা করার আগেই রেডিও সংযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন করে দেয়া হয়।‌ জিয়াউর রহমান‌ও দারুন একটা চাল চেলে এবং রক্ষীবাহিনীর তৎপরতায় সে যাত্রা জানে বেঁচে যান। মিথ্যা মামলায় আরো অনেকের সাথে জড়িয়ে পড়ে জয়নাল আবেদীন‌ও। এইসব কান্ড যেদিন হচ্ছিলো সেদিন সে তার গর্ভবতী স্ত্রীর বাহুডোরে ঘুমাচ্ছে। পরদিন তার স্ত্রীর ভেলিভারি। সন্ধ্যায় তাড়াতাড়ি চলে আসবার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়ে ঘর ছাড়ে জয়নাল। আর ফিরে আসে না।

জয়নালের শখ ছিলো মেয়ে। সে বলতো, "এক ছেলে এক মেয়ে,হ্যাপি ফ্যামিলি।" সেই মেয়ের মুখ দেখে যাবার সৌভাগ্য তার হয়নি। চারদিন বয়সী কন্যাকে নিয়ে আয়েশা বিমানবাহিনীর সদর দপ্তরের দরজায় দরজায় ঘোরে। লোকের পা চেপে ধরে বলে, "আমি আর কিছু চাই না,মেয়ের মুখটা একবার তারে দেখতে দেন।" তারা পা সরিয়ে নেয়। কঠিন গলায় বলে, "চিঠি পেলে আসেন। চিঠি পাবেন।"

চিঠি আয়েশা পায়। সে তখন তার শ্বশুরবাড়িতে এক ছেলে এক মেয়ে নিয়ে দিনরাত অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রমে ব্যস্ত। চিঠি আসে তখন, "জয়নাল আবেদীনের ফাঁসি অমুকদিন কার্যকর করা হয়েছে।"

চিৎকার দিয়ে কাঁদে আয়েশা। তারপরেও হাল ছাড়ে না যখন একদিন জানতে পারে,কার্যকর করা সকলের‌ই ফাঁসি হয়নি। দেশে তখন চরম অরাজকতা। হুটহাট সরকার বদল হচ্ছে,হতেও পারে জয়নাল আবেদীন বেঁচে আছে। জটিল কোন মিশনে চলে গেছে। ফিরে আসবে।

অপেক্ষার মতো কঠিন জিনিস আর কি আছে! আয়েশা তাই অপেক্ষা করে। কন্যা,পুত্রকে বুকে চেপে ধরে অপেক্ষা করে। সমস্ত প্রতিকূলতার সাথে লড়াই করতে করতেও অপেক্ষা করে। জয়নাল হয়তো ফিরে আসবে। আয়েশা শক্তিশালী মেয়ে,সে জয়নাল আসা পর্যন্ত টিকে থাকবেই। জয়নালকে দেখাবে তার ছেলেমেয়েদের সে মানুষের মতো মানুষ করতে পেরেছে, হয়তো অনেক বছর পর এক ছেলে এক মেয়ে নিয়ে তাদের সেই হ্যাপি ফ্যামিলির স্বপ্ন পূরণ হবে! আয়েশা তাই অপেক্ষা করে।

অনেক বছর পর দেশে যখন একটু একটু করে বিচার ব্যবস্থা তৈরি হতে শুরু হয়েছে, সেনানিবাসে সংঘটিত এই অপরাধের বিচার হয়। এর সাথে জড়িতদের একে একে ফাঁসির আদেশ হলে বেগম সুফিয়া কামাল এইসব মৃত্যুদণ্ডপ্রাপ্ত আসামীদের পরিবারের পক্ষ থেকে তাদের জীবনভিক্ষা চেয়ে চিঠি লেখেন। সৈনিকবৃন্দ কিন্তু ক্ষমা করতে নারাজ। তারা খুব গুছিয়ে চিঠির জবাব দেয় যেটা ছিলো এরকম যে, আপনি যাদের ক্ষমা করতে বলছেন তাদের ভেতর এরকম কত আয়েশা ছিলো আপনি কি ধারনা করতে পারেন মা? কত ফখরুল, কত ফরিদা অকালে তাদের বাবাকে হারিয়েছে সেটা ধারনা করতে পারেন?

পত্রলেখকের নিজের জীবনকাহিনীটাও ছিলো হৃদয়বিদারক। তারা কতকিছু সয়েছে, কতকিছু ক্ষয়েছে এই অন্যায়ের ফলে তার হিসাব কে রাখে? আর কি ফিরে আসবে জয়নালরা আয়েশাদের কাছে! তবুও আয়েশারা অপেক্ষায় থাকে যে যেভাবে অন্যায়,ভুল বোঝাবুঝি থেকে এতগুলো মানুষের প্রান গেলো হয়তো সেভাবেই ভুলবোঝাবুঝির ফাঁক ফোঁকরগলে কেউ কেউ বের হয়ে এসেছে, হয়তো জয়নাল বেঁচে আছে। আর এই অপেক্ষার থেকে বড় কষ্ট বা শক্তি কোনোটাই দুনিয়াতে নেই।

আয়েশামঙ্গল দিয়ে আনিসুল হক আমার হৃদয় জিতে নিলেন।

অতি সম্প্রতি আনিসুল হকের 'আয়েশামঙ্গল' বইটি হারপার কলিন্সের ব্যানারে আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। 'The Ballad Of Ayesha' নামের ইংরেজি সংস্করণটি অনূদিত হয়েছে ইনাম আহমেদের সুদক্ষ হাত ধরে।

১৯৭৭ সালের ২ অক্টোবর ঘটে গেল এক রহস্যময় সামরিক অভ্যুত্থান। ওই রাতে বিমানবাহিনীর সদস্য জয়নাল ঘুমিয়ে ছিল স্ত্রী আয়েশার পাশে। পরদিন সকালে সে কাজে গেলো, তারপর আর ফিরে এলো না রোজকার মতো। শুরু হলো এক বাঙালী নারীর উজান জলে ভাসা, স্বামীর অন্বেষণ।

দু'-দুটো দুগ্ধপোষ্য সন্তান নিয়ে আয়েশা কোথায় গেলো? কীভাবে নানা গঞ্জনা ও শেষ পর্যন্ত দুষ্টলোকের প্ররোচনায় শ্বশুর বাড়ি থেকে বিতাড়িত হতে হলো তাকে? এরপরের বিশটি বছর কীভাবে কাটলো?

ক্ষমতায় টিকে থাকতে মেকি সেনাঅভ্যুত্থানের দায়ে ও প্রহসনের বিচারের নামে, জিয়ার নির্দেশে সামরিক আদালতে ১১৪৩ জন সৈনিক ও অফিসারকে ফাঁসির দড়িতে ঝুলিয়েছিলেন। ২০ বছর পর, ২২ নভেম্বর ১৯৯৭। দৈনিক ভোরের কাগজে প্রকাশিত হল একটি প্রতিবেদন। যেখানে ছিল শত শত বিমান সেনাকে ফাঁসিতে ঝোলানোর বিবরন। আরও ছিল, এখনও কারাগারে বিনা বিচারে আটকদের ব্যাপারে তথ্য।

তবে কি এতদিন আগে হারানো নিখোঁজ স্বামীর কোন সন্ধান মিলবে?

আয়েশা আবার ফিরে আসছে ঢাকায়। বড় ছেলেকে সাথে নিয়ে ছুটে আসছে হারানো স্বামীকে ফিরে পাবার আশায়। সেই যে কত বছর আগে মনসামঙ্গল কাব্যশ্রিত থিয়েটার দেখেছিল গ্রামের মঞ্চে, দু'চোখ জলে ভেসেছিল বেহুলার দু:খে। সেবারই আয়েশা মনে মনে প্রতিজ্ঞা করেছিল, কল্পিত ভবিষ্যতের স্বামীকে সে এভাবেই রক্ষা করবে। তার ক'দিন পরেই জয়ন��লের সাথে বিয়ে হয়েছিল ওর। পুঁথির পাতার বেহুলার বাস্তব জগতে আয়েশা হয়ে দায়িত্ব পালন না করলে কী হয়?

সত্য ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করে কাল্পনিক এই উপন্যাস।
দুর্ভিক্ষ, বঙ্গবন্ধুর হত্যাকান্ড, সামরিক রাজনীতি, গণভোট, জিয়ার মৃত্যু- বাংলাদেশের এক কলঙ্কিত সময়ের ইতিহাস উঠে এসেছে এই বইয়ের পাতায়।

মধ্যযুগের বাঙালী কবিরা লিখেছিলেন মনসামঙ্গল; স্বামীকে পুনরাজ্জীবিত করতে বেহুলার সংগ্রামের কাব্য। তাতে বন্দনা করা হয়েছিল দেব-দেবীদের।
আজ এক বাঙালী লেখক বন্দনা করেছেন সাধারণ এক মানবীর, রচনা করেছেন আয়েশামঙ্গল।

আনিসুল হক একজন পাঠকনন্দিত লেখক, তবে সমতালে দেশে তার 'হেটার্সের' অভাব নেই।ব্যক্তিগতভাবে আমার দৃঢ় বিশ্বাস, এধরণের আরো অসংখ্য মানসম্পন্ন বই তার থেকে আশা করা যেতো। আয়েশামঙ্গলের সহজ-স্বাভাবিক বর্ণণাভঙ্গীর আড়ালে এক কলঙ্কিত অধ্যায়ের যে চিত্র অঙ্কিত হয়েছে, তা পাঠককে আচ্ছন্ন করে দেয়, আলোড়ন তোলে মনের গহীন কোণে।

আনিসুল হকের যত গুলো বই পড়েছি তার মধ্যে বেশিরভাগই বিরক্তির উদ্রেক হয়েছে, একমাত্র মা ছাড়া আর কোনো বইয়ের জন্য আমার অন্তরাত্মা ছটফট করেনি, আজাদের জন্য এক দশম শ্রেণি পড়ুয়া কিশোরীর যে কতশত বার বুক চিরে দীর্ঘ শ্বাস বের হয়ে এসেছে,

নিজের মা কে দেখলে আজাদের মায়ের কথা ভেবে কতবার যে চোখ ভিজে এসেছিল তার পরিসংখ্যান ঠিক মনে নেই,হক সাহেবের আর কোনো বই পড়ার চিন্তা ভাবনা আপাতত ছিল না।

কিন্তু সব উলট পালট করে দিল আয়েশা বেগম,বেহুলা লখিন্দরকে বাঁচানোর জন্য পাড়ি দিয়েছিল মনসার বিছানো দূগম পথ তবুও আশা ছিল স্বামীকে ঠিক ফিরে পাবে।

কিন্তু যা মনসামঙ্গলে হয়েছে তা কি বাস্তবের আয়েশার জীবনে সম্ভব ছিল?না ছিল না ,বিশ বছর আশার ঘর তার তাসের ঘরের মতো মিলিয়ে গেল শুধু একটা লাইনে "১৯৭৭ সালে ২৪ অক্টোবর ঢাকা সেন্ট্রাল জেলে তার ফাঁসি কার্যকর হয়ে গেছে"।

বিশ বছরের প্রতীক্ষার দাম পেল শুধু একটি মৃত্যু দিনের তারিখ জেনে ☺.

অপেক্ষা খুব কষ্টের হয় কিন্তু যখন তা অতৃপ্তি রেখে যায় তার অনুভূতি কেমন হয়?

আনিসুল হকের রংপুর প্রীতি আসলেই তুলনাহীন। তাঁর লেখাগুলোতে তাঁর নিজের শহর তিনি আনার চেষ্টা করেন প্রায় সময়। এই গল্পও রংপুরের এক সাধারণ নারীর, অপেক্ষা যাকে অসাধারণ বানিয়ে দেয়৷

ساده، جالب و خوب. شروع خوب و پایان راضی‌کننده و گفت‌وگوهای جذاب بین زوج قصه. داستان تصنیف عایشه در بستر یک اتفاق تاریخی پیش می‌ره و فاجعه‌ای که در زندگی بخشی از مردم عادی بنگلادش به وجود میاره. زنانی بیوه می‌شن، بچه‌هایی یتیم و مادرانی داغ‌دار.

An endless wait expounds through the countless nights of hope,reminiscing the golden days and murmuring a short prayer with a deep longing to relive them with the dear one lost to silence.

Bangladesh is recovering from chaos, in a remote village Ayesha receives a official letter bearing the verdict of her husband Airforce corporal Joynal's case.The single line doomed her life.She endures a journey to find answers to the questions that haunted throughout her existence. A bright student Ayesha was married off at a young age.She built her beautiful nest with threads of trust, love,joy and laughter.But her whole world came crashing down when her husband didn't returned home one night.She survived in the hope of his return.Memories of good days fueled her faith and energized her lifelong struggle.

Written against the backdrop of natural calamity and insurgency , the story unfolds in flashback manner.A parallel comparison is drawn throughout the narration between Ayesha, the central protagonist and Behula the tragic heroine of the folk epic Manashamangal who symbolizes a wife's fidelity. Behula's heroic and sacrificing acts constantly inspired Ayesha. Through the lucid language and rich vocabulary , the author projected the rural life,the intricate social structure,the position of woman,the customs and practices of that era.The characters were beautifully etched out and brought alive through fine detailing.

The writer bared the plight of thousands of soldiers who were imprisoned and trialed without proper evidence during insurgency and the harassment faced by their families went through the whole ordeal.Based on real incidents, the story raises some serious questions.Does the soldiers deserves such treatment after all the sacrifices they made?

The Ballad of Ayesha was translated from the original work Ayeshamangal in Bengali which piqued my interest to read the original work.The essence of the original work could not be wholly captured, it was somewhere lost during translation.

The climax wrenched my heart.The insights and interview at the end of the tale helped a lot to see the bigger picture and  understand the thought behind the story

The story revolves around the life of Ayesha Begum & how the rapidly changing situations in Bangladesh molded her life. Her father was a headmaster at a school & was determined for her daughter’s education, she was quite good at it too. She knew the Quran well enough & even when her father fell ill for a brief period of time she didn’t left her studies & kept going to the school on her own until a stranger fell in love with her & started harassing her. Fearing her safety her father marries young Ayesha to a Air Force personnel Joynal Abedin who fell madly in love with her. They had children together & were leading a happy life until the political situations in the country fluctuated & one evening Joynal didn’t came back. Broken, she had to move to the village with her in-laws where she receives a letter that her husband has been sentenced to death. But her hardships didn’t end there. Get this book to get a wholesome political history of Bangladesh & how its uncertainty affected the lives of the people especially our protagonist,

Three stars in deference to the fact that I believe this was a good book with some extremely clumsy translation. The language is pedestrian, the linkage between the main story and the overall political exposition is weak. The story itself is interesting enough, but the writing is distractingly bad.

Life in Bangladesh has been a topic of several book by now but still it has never lost its novelty as it is something no-one else can imagine and have gone through. A life of uncertainty is the greatest trauma one could go through. The female protagonist Ayesha's life is one that no-one could simply imagine and put into paper.



Inspired by a true story, The Ballad of Ayesha is the tale of a woman who got married at a young age to an Air Force Officer. Her live is a beautifull rhythmic ballad till her husband is accused of insurgency and she gets a mail informing her that he is sentenced to death. Grown up hearing the tale of Behula who fought death to bring her husband back, Ayesha is determined to find the truth about her husband. But life has several unexpected shock in store for her, which leaves her stupified but how she vanquishes her obstacles and emerge like a winner is the crux of the story.



The climax is straight and without much unexpected dramatic twists. Author has tried to bring the instances as close to reality as possible. Nonetheless the demography of the tale is purely fictional so are the names of the characters. The narration is lucid. The translator has done an exemplary job in preserving the authenticity.

সম্পাদনার ত্রুটির জন্য চার তারা। এখনো এই বইয়ে বানানগত ভুল আশা‌ করা যায় না। তাছাড়া লেখকদের উচিত যতিচিহ্ন সম্পর্কে সচেতন হওয়া। উদ্ধৃতিকে আলাদাভাবে লেখা উচিত বলেই মনে করি। অতি মনোযোগী পাঠকও খেই হারিয়ে ফেলতে পারেন!
আর এ সত্যকাহিনি নিয়ে বলতে গেলে বলতে হয়, আনিসুল হকের 'মা' আর এটাই আমার কাছে ভালো লেগেছে। কিশোরদের জন্য এখন যা লেখেন, তা আমার পছন্দ হয় না। তবে এটা আসলেই অসাধারণ এবং এ কারণেই এর অনুবাদ জরুরি ছিল এবং হয়েছেও (The Ballad of Ayesha)!

The Ballad of Ayesha should just be called "Why bother, Ayesha!"
The only point of redemption this book has, is the fact is that it is only 156 pages long. The writer basically took an incident, put it against a controversial raging political backdrop and forgot to link the two. I cannot put my finger on what the most annoying part of the book was, the sloppy writing, the insultingly clumsy translation or the half-hearted narrative.
This would have made a good 4-5 page story,but maybe the journalist under the author did not research enough to fabricate a story worth a novel. Life's too short people!

This was the first book I read of a contemporary Bangladeshi writer. The story talks about the widow of a victim of one of many injustices carried out in Bangladesh. while the story remains true to narrative, it gets a little slow and cliched. But the novel ends strongly with real anecdotes.

প্রেসিডেন্ট জিয়াউর রহমান নিহত হলেন ৩০ মে ১৯৮১। নিহত হওয়ার পর দেখা গেল লোকটি সৎ ছিলেন। লোক দেখানো সৎ নয়, আসলেই সৎ। তার পারিবারিক সঞ্চয় শূন্য। তৎকালীন বাংলাদেশ সরকার, জিয়া পরিবারকে সাহায্যের জন্য এগিয়ে এলেন। সরকার যা করলো তার কয়েকটি উদা:
১. জিয়া পরিবারকে দশ লক্ষ্যটাকা নদগ মঞ্জুর করলেন।
২. এক টাকা দামে ঢাকার অভিজাত এলাকায় বিশাল বাড়ি বিক্রি ( বর্তমান সরকারের তথ্য অনুযায়ী লিজ)
৩. জিয়ার দুই পুত্রের দেশে ও বিদেশে পড়াশোনার খরচ বহন সহ মাথাপিছু পনের'শ টাকা ভাতা
৪. জিয়া পরিবারের চিকিৎসা, যাতায়ত,গ্যাস, বিদ্যুৎ, পানি সহ গৃহভৃত্যের খরচ বহন।
প্রেসিডেন্ট জিয়া ও তার জীবনদশায় বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়নে(!) বহুকাজ করেন। যেমন:
১. তিনি বহু খাল কাটেন। নদীমাতৃক দেশকে অনেকটা খালমাতৃক দেশে পরিণত করার প্রচেষ্টা!
২. তিনি কঠিন যুদ্ধাপরাধীদের (যেমন: গোলাম আযম) দেশে ফিরিয়ে এনে নাগরিকত্ব প্রদান করে বিশেষ ক্ষমতায় বসান
৩. ক্ষমতায় টিকে থাকতে মেকি সেনাঅভ্যুত্থানের দায়ে ও প্রহসনের বিচারের নামে, জিয়ার নির্দেশে সামরিক আদালতে ১১৪৩ জন সৈনিক ও অফিসারকে ফাঁসির দড়িতে ঝুলান (সরকারী নথি, ৯ই অক্টোবর ১৯৭৭ পর্যন্ত)
আচ্ছা, ঐ ১১৪৩ জনের সবাই কি দোষী ছিল? এমন কি হতে পারে না যে ২/১ জন ছিল নিরপরাধ। এমন কি হতে পারে, যে ৫০/৬০ জন নিরপরাধ! বাংলার মানুষ আজ তা জানে। উচ্চ আদালত কর্নেল তাহের সহ কয়েকজনের বিচার অবৈধ ঘোষনা করেছেন। আজ জিয়া জীবিত থাকলে তার বিচার হত। বাংলাদেশের সংবিধানে মৃত ব্যাক্তির বিচার করার কোন বিধান নেই।
ঐ হতভাগা ১১৪৩ জনের একজন বিমান বাহিনীর সদস্য কর্পোরাল মোঃ জয়নাল আবেদীন (ব্যাচ নং ক-৪৪০৬১)। মজার বিষয় হচ্ছে, ২ অক্টোবরের যে সেনা অভ্যুত্থানের দায়ে জয়নাল কে ফাঁসি দেওয়া হয়, সেইদিন জয়নাল ডিউটিতেই ছিলেন না। তিনি ছিলেন সন্তানসম্ভবা স্ত্রীর শিউরে। তবুও রেহায় পাননি তিনি......
আহারে.. আহারে...
তারপর? তারপরের ঘটনা কি? ঐ ১১৪৩ জনের কাছে আছে ১১৪৩ টি ঘটনা। তার কতটি আমাদের সামনে এসেছে? কতটুকুন আমরা জেনেছি? সেই ১১৪৩ টি ঘটনার একটি, আয়েশামঙ্গল। জয়নালের স্ত্রী, আয়েশার ঘটনা।
জয়নাল আটক হওয়ার পর, শুরু হয় জয়নাল স্ত্রী আয়েশার উজানে ভাসান পর্ব। স্বামী অন্বেষন ও দু'টো দুগ্ধপোষ্য সন্তান নিয়ে বেচে থাকার সংগ্রাম। নানা গঞ্জনা ও শেষ পর্যন্ত দুষ্টদের প্ররোচনায় শ্বশুর বাড়ি থেকে বিতারিত হয় আয়েশা। তবুও বেঁচে থাকা হার মানে না আয়েশার।
২০ বছর পর। ২২ নভেম্বর ১৯৯৭।
দৈনিক ভোরের কাগজে প্রকাশিত হল একটি প্রতিবেদন। যেখানে ছিল শত শত বিমান সেনাকে ফাঁসিতে ঝোলানোর বিবরন। আর ছিল, এখনও কারাগারে বিনা বিচারে আটকদের ব্যাপারে তথ্য।
আয়েশা সেই অফিসে, পুত্রকে নিয়ে ছুটে যায়। হয়তো, জয়নাল বন্দী আছে কোন কারাগারে! কারন, তার মুত্যু কার্যকর হলে তার লাশ তো পাবে আয়েশা পরিবার। সেটা তারা পায় নি। এতটুকু ক্ষীনআশা বুকে করে ছুটে গেল আয়েশা.......
তারপর! কি পেল? মনসামঙ্গল কাব্যের বেহুলার মত বাস্তবতার গাঙ্গুড়ে ভেসে কি পেল আয়েশামঙ্গল কাব্যের আয়েশা? সেকি বেহুলার মত দেবতা তথা প্রহসনের বিচার থেকে ফীরে পেল আজকের লক্ষীন্দর কে?
জানতে হলে পড়তে হবে, আনিসুল হকের আয়েশামঙ্গল।
পুনশ্চ: প্রেক্ষপট চমৎকার, এবং বাস্তব ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করে রচিত হতে পারতো একটি মহাকাব্য। কারন, তৎকালীন রাজনৈতিক অস্থির সময় ও তার কাহিনি টা প্রতিমুহূর্তে যেন রহস্যাবৃত। কিন্তু তা হয়নি।
ব্যাক্তিগত মতামত, শুধুমাত্র লেখকের অতিমাত্রায় কল্পনা ও খামখেয়ালিপনার (হয়তো শব্দ চয়নে ভুল হল) কারনে এটা শুধুমাত্র একটা ইতিহাস নির্ভর ফিক্সন উপন্যাসের মোড়কে আবৃত থেকে গেছে।
বইটি পড়তে আমি মানা করবো। বাজে লেখনশৈলী এবং বিদঘুটে ঘটনাপ্রবাহ।

Amidst all this chaos, Ayesha receives a official letter bearing the verdict of her husband Airforce corporal Joynal's case where he's supposed to be hanged to death. This very single letter destroyed her happy & peaceful life. What happens next? Will she get her husband back? Will justice be served to her long, yet enduring struggle? Nice and interesting read after a long time, the book is about post revolution of Bangladesh where a small town married girl called Ayesha Begum falls under extreme situation because of war in her country; her situation becomes worse when her husband Joynal Abedin an Air force corporal is missing.

A letter arrives at her place stating that Joynal Abedin has been death for an attempted coup in defense force. She survives in her hope that one day Joynal will return. I like the writing style of author; because it is presented in flashback manner, with simple and easy language. Also the comparison between Ayesha and Behula the protagonist of epic folk Manashamangal is mind-blowing, what was the situation of a woman at the time of 70’s in Bangladesh is perfectly portrayed by the author.

Based on the real incident one can find out through the book that what would be the dilemma of the family whose bread runner were imprisoned without any formal notice or evidence at the time of emergency in Bangladesh.

This is first time I am reading any Bangladesh writer; I really appreciated his work and would like to read more from him. I highly recommend this book to those who love’s to read historical fiction.

Based on the unrest of Bangladesh and it’s people, Ballad of Ayesha is phenomenal, and a must read.

I know I didn't read the original Bangla one, but this did not fail to disappoint either. History has a very twisted path in our country's past, and this story is just one depiction out of the numerous sacrifices made in the name of "justice".

2 stars. There was unnecessary zia bashing , Bongobondhu praising which was not needed. The writer should state the events of history and let the readers decide, not impose their bias in a fiction.

দোসরা অক্টোবর, ১৯৭৭ সালে ঘটিত বিদ্রোহচেষ্টা। তারপর বিনা-বিচারে হাজারের উপর সেনা কর্মকর্তা হত্যা করা_ বিষয়টা সম্পর্কে এই বইয়ের মাধ্যমেই জানলাম।

গল্পের প্লটটা ভালো লেগেছে। মানুষটা হারিয়ে গেলে পুরো পরিবারটাই বিধ্বস্ত হয়ে যায়, তাই না?
ভাষাটা সহজ, সুখপাঠ্য। রংপুরের আঞ্চলিক ভাষার লক্ষ্যণীয় ব্যবহার রয়েছে, বাহে!

তবে, সর্বস্থানে তৈলমর্দন করাটা লেখকের যেন অভ্যাসে পরিণত হয়েছে। এই বিষয়টা বাদ দিলে বইটি আরো সুন্দর হতো।
আর লেখক হুজুরফোবিয়ায় ভুগছেন। ব্যাপারটা উপভোগ-ই করলাম।

ধরি মাছ না ছুঁই পানি। অবস্থা হয়েছে এইরকম। মূল বিষয়বস্তু ছিল অসাধারণ। শুরুটাও ছিল দুর্দান্ত। ঐতিহাসিক বই লিখতে গেলে লেখককে হতে হয় নির্মোহ। কোন পক্ষ নিয়ে যদি কাহিনী এগিয়ে যায় তাহলে সেটা আর ঐতিহাসিক বই থাকে না,সেটা হয়ে যায় আবর্জনা। এই বইটাও দারুণ হওয়ার সম্ভবনা ছিল কিন্তু শেষ পর্যন্ত একপেশে বক্তব্যের জন্য কেঁচে গেল। তিন তারা পাবে শুধু আয়েশার জীবন যুদ্ধের বর্ণণার জন্য।
