About the Author:
: Claude Simon, an innovator of the French new novel style, won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1985. He is the author of more than fifteen novels, which draw from his experiences as a cavalryman in the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the Resistance. He lives in France. Translator Richard Howard is a Pulitzer Prize-winner and poetry editor of the Paris Review and Western Humanities Review. He is the author of eleven volumes of poetry and has published more than 150 translations from French, most recently Stendhal's The Charterhouse of Parma. He lives in New York.
