ETHAN PICKETT'S battered pickup truck is found in the valley of the Bluewater Ski Club, a four hundred foot drop, his broken and bloodied body trapped inside. Ethan is a local hero, a retired rodeo cowboy, and self-made billionaire businessman. His death is big news. When Charlie Beach hears the news, he's devastated. As a private investigator, he's had experience with death, but not with the death of someone as close to him as Ethan Pickett. On the night of the funeral, Charlie and Cedar, Ethan's daughter, and Charlie's best and closest friend since JK, are sharing a few beers and trading stories. At one point, Cedar makes a casual comment about the irony of her father's accident, running his truck off a dark and deserted country road he had been driving his entire life. Charlie didn't understand the concept of irony, but what he did understand was the bad feeling washing over him. The OPP's top investigators ruled it an accident, but what if they missed something? What if it wasn't an accident? What if the accident was staged to cover up a murder? With no evidence, no suspects, and no motive, Charlie wouldn't go hard at it, but he figured there was no harm in talking to a few people, asking some questions, see if anything popped. Charlie would be happy if it turned out to be nothing. But, if it turned out to be something, then he'd make it his life's mission to track down the killer, and send his ass to prison.

MY STORY
I have been a dedicated reader for as long as I can remember, developing a fondness for crime fiction novels at an early age. It all started with the series of Hardy Boys mysteries, Frank and Joe, Frank being my favorite. As I entered my teen years, spending time between classes in the high school library, I discovered crime fiction writers like Agatha Christie, P.D. James, and Robert Parker, just to name a few. One day browsing through a local bookstore, looking for something new to read, the owner suggested a book by Elmore Leonard called Fifty-Two Pickup. Wow! What a game-changer. I was hooked. I wanted to be a writer.

Fast forward a number of years, I finally decided to put pen to paper and write a murder/mystery novel. The end result is my debut novel called The Tequila Promise. I followed up that book with another called Secrets of the Innocent. I continue to write and hopefully will have many more books to follow.

Just my kind of mystery. I liked the small town setting, and I especially liked Charlie Beach. I have a penchant for good P.I.’s and their rough and ready, well, sweet too, personalities. Charlie Beach is one those investigators that just doesn’t always believe the findings the police come up with. This time the deceased is a good friend; one Charlie knew very well. Once Charlie begins to doubt what’s happened, he’s like a dog with a bone and won’t let go.

The above description is, as I said, my kind of story. And this is one of those that really fits the bill. It has twists and turns, some action, even a couple of red herrings. I liked the guessing. I spent a lot of time trying to read really fast. I didn’t want the story to end, but I sure wanted to know what the end would be like.

This can be read as a stand-alone. It looks to me as if it is a debut novel. I most certainly hope it will be a series. I really like Charlie Beach and hope I get to meet him again.

This is a interesting murder mystery about a death near a skiclub. Ethan is one of the MCs in the very first few chapters, but then we find out as the readers he is the one who was killed, in an accident its ruled.
Charlie is the main MC of our book. Charlie Beach is a PI and Ethan was a close friend of his, so Ethan wants to find out what happened and is also very thrown by this murder. Ethan is portrayed as a good all-around guy in this book and it is a blow to both Charlie and the community where they live for this to have happened.
This is also the first book in the Charlie Beach series and where we are introduced to Charlie and his community. Charlie doesn't believe that the OPP investigators have done all they should with Ethan's death and that's where he steps in trying to find the truth out about what happened.
And like any other murder/mystery type of book more people start to be killed off and more things happen in the book to keep you guessing. I also really liked the ending and to see where Charlie and Cedar are headed. The writing is well done for a debut mystery series and I really liked the new Charlie Beach character.
I think that the author did a great job introducing us the readers to the world of Toronto and Charlie Beach! I look forward to reading more of the author's work in the future.

This is a really interesting detective novel by John MacGougan. It follows Charlie Beach, a private investigator, who is trying to solve the death of Ethan Pickett, a local hero. Ethan was a rodeo cowboy who became a successful businessman.

The story starts with Ethan being found dead in his truck after it went off a cliff. The police believe it was an accident, but Charlie isn't so sure. He starts investigating and talking to people who knew Ethan. We also learn about Ethan's life through flashbacks.

Charlie finds out that Ethan was about to get married and was working on a big project. He also had some enemies, including a corrupt judge that Charlie put behind bars.

The story follows Charlie as he tracks down leads and tries to figure out who killed Ethan. There are a lot of twists and turns along the way, and I wasn't sure who the culprit was until the end.

I enjoyed this book because it was suspenseful and kept me guessing. I also liked the characters. The book also has some interesting side plots, like Charlie's relationship with Stella.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys detective novels.

John MacGougan and Charlie Beach are on my radar! I'm always looking for crime thrillers, and I'll admit that I'm not the easiest to please where the genre is concerned. Anytime I run across a character and writing style that I enjoy as much as any of my favorites, I'm definitely coming back for more.
As I understand it, The Tequila Promise is MacGougan's debut, so when I say it's right up there with any of my favorites in the genre, most of those are authors I've read for years. The storyline is captivating and gritty, the twists are very well done, and Charlie Beach is a character I genuinely like and want to root for. The book is well-written, and the pacing is perfect for the twists and suspense of the story.
So, if you enjoy crime thrillers, I'd highly recommend John MacGougan's The Tequila Promise. Now, I'm off to add the second Charlie Beach book to my TBR.

I thought that this was a pretty good read. It was clear who the bad guy was from the opening chapter, and this is confirmed a few chapters in. The pace is reasonable and there is still mystery as the story unfolds and the investigator and his network of colleagues investigate. The protagonist is one impressively busy person.

The Tequila Promise opens with a blast and never lets up. The Tequila Promise kept me in suspense from the first page with all the many twists that kept popping up. Once I picked up The Tequila Promise I was glued to the pages not able to turn them as fast as I would have liked.

Ethan Pickett’s truck was found with his body inside. Ethan Pickett’s death was ruled an accident. Charlie Beach, a private investigator is devastated when he hears about Ethan’s death. Ethan is well-known as a local hero, a retired rodeo cowboy, and a self-made billionaire businessman.

After talking to Ethan’s daughter, Cedar, Charlie starts to question if it was an accident or if he was murdered. Charlie starts looking into Ethan’s death. As the story progresses, more bodies turn up.

After reading about Ethan and what happened to him on that awful night I had so many questions about who and why he was murdered. And as I said I was kept in suspense throughout the book. I was racing to the end to see who and why Ethan was murdered.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Tequila Promise and can’t wait to see what Charlie has in store for him in the next Charlie Beach Mystery series, Secrets of the Innocent.

As a avid reader of crime and mystery novels, I am always looking for new authors that I might try. The Tequila Promise is a debut novel with a Toronto and area setting. While Louise Penny is at the top of Canadian mystery stories, John MacGougan has matched Her for suspense and passed Her with a gritty style and a PI detective that will surely lead to more!
