From the author of the LitRPG epic fantasy, War God's Mantle, comes a brand new pulp harem adventure!
Denver Fury is a shoot-em-up, action adventure, urban fantasy novel which is not intended for listeners under the age of 18 years of age. This novel contains swearing, violence, and a harem of beautiful shapeshifting women that the hero regularly sleeps with - and he does so gladly.
So yeah it was ok, but it reminded me of a Valens Legacy with dragons. The female love interests are really active and are no trophy. That's what I liked the most in that story.
to me this book felt like someones fanfic got published.. kid thinks he's special. finds out he is and gets two hot girls who easly get threesomes with soooo many times in this book was like "ok man lay off it a little... your kinda needing to think with your head and not the head below the belt". not to mention he just basically goes to the three locations and gets handed the stuff... why didn't villain get the first one.. or destroy the keep? instead the keep was locked up? i guess if anything he's a courteous villain.. then the powers were just gifted to him and he tried to do something game like tried being the thing as felt like not even dived into. is fighting and sex the only two ways to gain? if he added to the magic list would he of of just learned stuff? any special things about being a black dragon? im sure there's a lot more things can talk about on the "leveling" system but ya its just basically there.. not to mention at the end how he fights everyone and such... how did he manage that as he was never a fighter before and after only 3 days he's beating adults and others who have been at this waay longer then him? so much was just given to him it felt like in the book because he's the hero. id say skip the book as just feels like i said.. someones furry fanfic got published and self inserted them self's into it XD
It was, okay? The book itself was okay, it felt a tiny bit generic and as if "had seen it before". Still original enough and the character are somewhat decently developed over the course of the book.
What bothered me was what felt like continuity errors. For example, one of the haremettes is initially reluctant to tie herself to the MC. Because "her kind mate for life". So if she would do so, it would be permanently and she'd rise or fall alongside him.
However when she finally makes the decision, it turns out she very much has a history. Which stands in direct contradiction to her previous reluctancy. Later on she is captured (which is one of the plots annoying me the most, the inevitably someone gets captured by the bad guys) and despite not wanting to, she knows she will eventually feel attracted and want to have sex with the bad guy.
This once again stands in stark contrast to her previous reluctancy to get attached to the MC, because supposedly her kind mate for life. Except she has both a history and would "naturally" switch to the bad guy if left alone with him along enough. This seems highly contradictory.
It also was in complete opposition to themes of "freedom", "free choice" etc. How can this be achieved when simply being around the bad guy (or the good guy) basically gets people to want to be with him no matter anything else. It means even if they were set free, the old system would quickly reassert itself and draw them back in.
This is trying hard but it is badly paced, unedited, verbose, and redundant. The characters are almost impossible to relate to, combining stock back stories with impossible levels of competence for the untrained. It says something when the best written character is the sociopathic, megalomaniac murderer in the role of direct antagonist. That is not a good thing.
didn't finish. might try again later most of these fantasy harem books start out a bit rough around the edges, but this is pretty bad. this writing is just awful.
The thing about these kind of books is that it's under GameLit or LitRPG or whatever, but it's really leaning towards Erotica than GameLit/LitRPG/Fantasy.
Yes, it's a GameLit/LitRPG/Fantasy book, but the overt sex scenes, the titillation, and the like are a huge part of these books, so much that it can and does overshadow the GameLit/LitRPG/Fantasy part. In this book, there is a bit of that. The story itself isn't as well constructed as it can be.
For example, I cringed right in the beginning. Snakes/Serpents/Dragons have horizontal-slit eyes. No, they do not. Goats do. So unless those are Goats wearing a Dragon-man costume with contacts and all, I don't know how that got pass proofreading or editing or any alpha/beta readers.
Bottom line, you wouldn't/shouldn't go to a GLBT book and give a review complaining about how it's GLBT. So, you shouldn't go to a wannabe Erotica masking under GameLit/LitRPG and review how bad of a GameLit/LitRPG/Fantasy it is.
You basically got a kid who found out he's a dragon and he's wanted dead. Thus, to survive, he has to get stronger by killing and having sex. When he kills, he, basically, steals the dead person's soul (energy). And when he have sex, he funnels that energy between the two and it gets stronger. And he will build a harem while he's at it.
Goal: Create a giant empire and harem. Obstacle: Current emperor and his underlings. Resources: Future haremettes and the 3 mini side quests.
So yeah, it's your basic Hero's Journey but poorly constructed and flooded with sex scenes or titillation. There are so many instances that doesn't really make any sense but it's just is because that's how the world works. Or the author stated as a fact and that's exactly how it should be.
For example, the dragon girl kept on bickering about rules but nobody, as in the big bosses, follow them. So what's the point? The protagonist is already running for his life, breaking one or two or all the rules doesn't really matter anymore.
Or the strength or power of the enemy. The main antagonist of this book, not the main boss of the series, showed up as a humanoid dragon with a gun. Maybe he underestimated the protagonist but the protagonist was able to fend him off. The protagonist won't win but definitely not die or lose that badly. That was how the main antagonist was portrayed. But later on, by using a fancy magical sword, he got a power boost that made him faster and stronger. How a magical sword that's only suppose to enhance cutting/piercing power affected his speed or strength? I'll never know. He nearly died from one of the 'newbie' dragon's breath (one of the haremette). Yet, the third time he showed up. He was able to transform into a full dragon and overpowered with new moves, new mindset, and basically a new boss. And the whole "kill to gain power" or "have sex to gain power" crap was tossed out the window. This main antagonist just went through a ritual and gained all that "power" he wanted.
And most importantly, they characters aren't relatable. And you really don't care for them. Curious about their backstory? Sure. But to care for them?
For what it's worth, the narrator of the audio book did a decent-good job and made it very tolerable. You can listen to it if you have nothing better to listen or you want a book about dragons and a harem.
Having enjoyed the author's "Boss Build", I went and checked this series out. Unfortunately I stopped at chapter 6. The book reeks of First-Book-Itis and the writing kept pulling me out. Let me give an example.
"Charging forward Steven drove his shoulder into the guy climbing in through the window. The man gripped Steven and hauled him outside. They fell onto a car in the driveway between the two houses. There were two cars and an SUV parked in a line."
I can respect some minimal writing at times, but that last line thrown out like "oh yeah by the way" to describe the scene just... No. It's not minimal elsewhere, but the book being in first person, and the tone of the audio's narrator, you could've tacked "and it was awesome" at the end of every sentence and it would fit.
While I could stick it out to see where the writing gets better, the series is up to #10, and Crash churned them out FAST.
Not bad, but I have read similar better books before. Steven Whipp is just an ordinary guy working 3 jobs to pay his way through school until someone comes to the place he works and tries to kill his co-worker. He ends up getting shot, but the bullets don't penetrate his skin, which he thinks is a little weird. Then a girl from his class kisses him and opens up a whole new world for Steven. Turns out he is a dragonsoul and was hidden away for his whole life to protect him from his enemies. His family come from a long line of powerful dragons and their line was thought to be destroyed, that is until now. Now Steven needs a crash course in becoming a dragon. He needs to gather an escort (build a harem), acquire a hoard (get rich), and build an Aerie (place to store his shit). He needs a harem because he gets energy from one of two ways: by having sex, or killing his enemies.
Well lets star for the positives, the story that the author wants to tell is interesting, there is a good pacing for the whole affair, it is rapid but it works in conjuntion to the desperate situation they encounter themselves in. So it has good potential. Now where did this killed me? Well the thing is this is all over the place I mean some character shown sign of improvement or development in some way just to retract and go nowhere, the facts on the story are always shifting to fit, they are never fully disclosed so there can be inserted some escape route from a plothole introduced. Some characterization has so manny different aspects that they don't fit a single character well, major example would be Aria. I mean this girl goes all over the place, from expierenced Dragonsoul (and all the socital behaviors that entittle it, like been a ruthelss warmongly beign) from naive, sheltered and clueless Princess. That could have been made to work but it fails in this book, at least from my point of view. The first antagonist of this book also suffers a little from this I never understood why would someone give so mutch power to a person so unruly as him. Wich makes me doubt the capabilitys of the Big Bad of this series, why would he delegate such an important role to someone so useless. And the hole issue that puts our MC in the perilious situation he finds himself in, that directly puts him in confrontation with the Big Bad sounds fishy. How something like that was managed with out major repercutions.
My first time reading a book by crash. I rated this book as a 3 because it still needs some improvements. Granted i did enjoy the story and i plan on reading more i think that theres room for growth and better characters. So far im finding his harem kind of lacking in the talent and personality department. Aria had some annoying secrets and for some reason couldn’t really help our MC with much of anything. Tessa is some goth poly chick (insert heavy eye roll here) who also has lots of secrets and has no idea who she is but is somehow linked to our MC but through some coincidence they are brought together at a coffee shop and Mouse, a drunken dragon girl that’s the wife of the main bad guy, she doesn’t show any emotion or really any feelings or trying to get to know our MC even after he saved her bacon. She should be telling him about Mulks escort, their lairs, weaknesses, assets and coming up with plans on how to hit him no make his life miserable until or MC can end his life. Also shouldn’t they be talking about Liam? So yeah, theres lots of plot holes here and this is why im giving it the score im giving it. Don’t get me wrong. I did enjoy the story and will continue to read it but there could definitely be some things that could have been addressed. Anyways, onward lads!!!
I enjoyed the premise of the book the main character is relatable and likable. I struggled with giving this a three star rating. I guess maybe I’m getting old but I read these books for the action and adventure not the smut. I mean, it was okay in God of war as it wasn’t pervasive. It was just a bit much in Denver Fury. I’m not a prude by any stretch of the imagination. It just seems that we don’t need gratuitous boinking every few pages. Perhaps I don’t fully appreciate the audience you’re appealing to but hey, whatever floats yer boat. There was a good story line, and there was enough Fantastic adventure and battle to keep me reading. I would have given it a solid four, if so much of my time wasn’t spent reading what could be best described as fluffy smut comparable to the old reader submissions from playboy.
DNF. I gave up after more than 50%. I really tried to give it a chance but just can't stomach it any longer. It has a lot of problems than I can normal ignore for this type of er... low quality literature. Inconsistencies. Immature vocabulary. Terrible, too-numerous sex scenes. I really don't get why Crash keeps throwing in so many sex scenes when they are so bad. They all go something like "They really wanted to do it. They found unimaginable bliss. It was good". Whatever. I like harem stories so I can ignore these. What I have to have though is a likable, intelligent MC that takes reasonable actions. This story doesn't have it. There are too many books out there for me to sit through Crash shoehorning this story together with incongruous actions by idiots. Also f*@king too many POVs. I hate that.
Its been a long while since I read a great book about dragons. Author did a nice job bringing them up to date, I was only confused about one thing... it made sense about Steven not knowing how to fly, but how did Edgar know how all of a sudden? Anyways good job, great read highly recommend it.
I just loved this LitRPG action packed adventure story, with a hero who starts out as being quite a wimp but on his 20th birthday gets kissed by a girl he had the hots for, and his life was never the same again. Steven is a young college student, shy and poor and working three part-time jobs to make it through college, being bullied at work and at school. Aria is an exchange student at his school and Tessa is a young barista Steven often fantasises about, thinking she was forever out of his reach. Aria kisses him and he discovers that bullets cannot hurt him, that he is a dragon and that he could now make more than his dreams become reality however, the only problem was that he knew nothing about how to go about making this come true and others had already marked him as a threat. His life is on the line from day one, but he acquires both Tessa and Aria as part of his escort, and together they search for his history to acquire his horde and build his aeries. The villains hounding their tracks are strong and evil and this dragon world is cutthroat and very competitive, and poor Steven still needs to be able to fully turn into his dragon. Rhaegan Mulk is a very powerful prime, who had wiped out the Drokharis family, and who was not going to accept the new competition at all. Steven is the last scion of the Drokharis family and though his fate was difficult, his destiny was full of awe and wonder. He was to change things for all time, he was the last and he was mighty and with his harem of women by his side as he gained animus through both battles and hot and sizzling sex which they all enjoyed Steven grew mightier. Steven Drokharis was to being about a revolution, so bring it on! I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in this fun, racy and sizzling hot series which is suitable for a mature adult audience with an open mind.
Obviously built for you to continue a series, which already is multiple books, since I just found this author. Like the story, the redemption aspects, dragons, magic, and the whole theme of the series. Although I understand the trips that is harem writing, Aaron seems.to have more sex in his story than others i have read. I'm not a prude, but I believe he might have gone with less and let more of the story flow. The reality is book 2 will be picked up and read, then I'll evaluate whether I'd rather go with authors with more story development and less sex scenes.
Modern fantasy mashed up with Skyrim and a dash of erotica.
First off, I really enjoyed the book. It is totally an escapist romp that kept me from putting down my Kindle until I finished it. There are sex scenes but they are not super explicit which keeps it from crossing over into erotica.
The book is just packed with action. Bouncing scene to scene embraces magic, combat, shapeshifting, air combat, discovering secrets, and more combat. It is just a super fun and light book to read. Definitely recommend as a beach or pool book for the summer.
Great first book. While reading in the beginning, this felt like a copy of Jan Stryvant's Valens Legacy story-line, but in the end, this book stands on it's own.
Liked the action, interaction between the characters and the Harem part was interesting and well done.
The only thing I did not like, mostly because it confused me in following, was the LitRPG elements; especially when trying to keep track of what abilities the MC has acquired and what they do.
Still, it was a good book. Will give the sequel a shot.
The story was pretty good, though I didn't realize thus was going to turn into an erotic harem series. While the sex is being used in the magical system, it seems more like the author made the magical system to use the sex because he wanted to write about a MC that has lot's of sex with multiple women. It struck me as very much wish fulfillment. If it weren't for that, I would definitely read book 2. As it stands, with the excessive sex scenes, I don't know if I will. Maybe if I get really bored....
Steven Whipp rudely discovers that he is a powerful dragonsoul. Girls now find him attractive, which is handy since sex and battle give him power. His long time crush Tessa, shows interest when he approaches her. Aria is drawn to him and thinks he can help her. I like the action, humor, and romance. While lust is involved, actual love proves more powerful and in tune with his morals. The characters develop good chemistry. I look forward to the next book.
The book from the get go hooked me in with it’s story. The main character is relatable i feel and the ladies he aquires i certainly feel good characters as well. The sex isn’t super graphic but drives the point of it’s importance, although there is one or two scenes i felt like the sex was just kinda added. Overall though a good read and looking forward to reading the next one.
A decent premise but overall underdeveloped. A lot of jarring pacing and unnecessary and dare I say, untimely, erotica woven in. The characters don't seem to connect well with the reality of their situations and come across as two-dimensional and flat with no real emotional connection between reader and content. Way too much hinged on hand-wavy, Deus Ex Machina solutions. Hopefully the series gets better as it progresses but for now it's not for me.
Raised as human in a single parent human family, but not human. A boy becomes a man when he enters his third century of life and his whole world changes when a guy in a lizard mask tries to kill him. I'm the long run it isn't a mask, but a wannabe dragon. The fight ends as Dragon vs Dragon and good wins over evil. Fun from start to finish with even some fun sex included. Definitely going to read the next book.
Light lit rpg about a young boy who does not know he is a dragon. Raised by human parents, he is assaulted one nigjt and finds out that he is bulletproof. World-building needs more development and characters could use a bit more color; however, an entertaining tale.
The book was decent but a lot of the plot really reminded me of a title I read a few months back so it didn't feel very original. I'll end up possibly reading book 2 if or when it comes out. Dragon shifters, powers, sex, coming of age and bam powers, last scion of a house, and dont forget the weird magical sex bonds. Same guts different skin.
I kept seeing this series and expecting something cheesy. I'm pleased that I finally gave it a chance after reading The war god's mantle. Fun urban fantasy which intermingles combat, young lovers and a variety of roadside diners. Maybe a little cheesy in a good way. The writing is great as well as the pacing.
A enjoyable saga of dragons and how they survive in this world. The combination of action and mystery is not what you would expect. It is so much better than the gene is noted for. You are going to want to keep on reading till the end.
I enjoyed the characters and the story. The backstory of the dragons and their primes is very exciting. I am looking forward to the next chapter in Steven's quest for vengeance and his search for answers.
