Everyone loves Toby Gibson. A co-owner of Undiscovered Treasures, a unique shop of antiques, collectables and junk, Toby is friendly, generous to a fault, the director of the local plays in Appleton and supports his church's youth functions. But the minute his sister, Caroline and her new husband, take off for their honeymoon, a “ghost” begins to haunt the shop—or maybe it's just an intruder. If so, Toby has no idea for what the thing is looking. To add to his troubles, he suspects Amy, not only is bidding for the property he's wanted forever, but is in love with him. And he's not interested. Amy Sanderson who owns the only flower shop in Appleton—Bloomin' Life—is drawn into capturing Toby's “ghost” when her own business is damaged by a destructive intruder. Having loved Toby since a teenager, she's more than willing to join forces with him. But she has no interest in being his best friend or a sister to him. And if she has to resort to schemes of outbidding him at his frequent auction attendences to get his attention, then so be it. She can be just as stubborn as the man who's determined to ignore her love. In between the break-ins, destruction of property, thefts and personal competitions against each other, Amy and Toby work together to find the thief who seems so determined to find a valuable item, he'll stop at nothing.

Another fun mystery by Carole Brown! I found Toby and Amy's relationship to be quirky and funny. When Amy was trying to outbid him at the auction, and then purchased a few things that left his head scratching, I couldn't wait to figure out the why behind it all. I think I was almost more interested in this part of the story at first, then the mystery of the "ghost". Carole always provides us with some humor in her stories, along with excitement and suspense. She is one of those authors who provides clues throughout the story that you don't always see at first, but once you reach the end and think back on the story, you can see it all come together.

On top of the mystery, was this wanting-to-happen romance between Toby and Amy, or lack there of. Up front you automatically think they are either together, or will get together very soon into the story line. But then as you read, you start to question their feeling towards one another. The way Ms. Brown presents their thoughts is so conflicting - in a good way. This is actually one time I wasn't sure the couple would get together. Once I determined that in my mind, I started reading the story more for the mystery and less for the romance, and found that I actually enjoyed it more this way.

Carole Brown's cozy mysteries are always fun to read. The setting is quaint, the mystery is fun, and I can easily picture myself at Undiscovered Treasures right beside Toby throughout it all. I look forward to future cozies by Ms. Brown. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I was glad to get to visit Undiscovered Treasures again, and this time through Toby’s eyes. One of my favorite pastimes is to browse and hopefully find some treasure from antique stores like Toby and Caro’s store. While Caro is on her honeymoon, brother Toby is completely in charge of the store. He is a lighthearted fellow who is trying not to get tied down in the matrimonial department, or at least he doesn’t think he wants to.

Toby’s Troubles is an apt name for this story as he has plenty of them. From a “ghost” that keeps visiting his shop in all hours of the night, to the break-ins of his friend Amy’s shop, to bidding wars on property and antiques, and to top it all off he is trying to direct the town’s annual play. So besides dealing with less than stellar actors, shady characters and visitors from out of town, he is also running from his feelings he insists that he does not have for Amy.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery and even though Toby was often a comical guy, when Amy’s life is jeopardized he certainly steps in and up to be her hero. I am looking forward to Ryle’s story next.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel. I was not required to post a positive review and the views and opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery. It is part of a series but the first I've read. It does read well on it's own. The novel is a good slice of small town America. Brown's writing style is straight forward and not complicated. The characters were portrayed well. Toby and Amy, the main characters, are not sophisticated people. They are just regular small town business owners. The plot was a little complicated and in the end I am not sure I understood everyone's motives and participation in nefarious deeds. Toby and Amy's shops get broken into. Strangers come to town were not who they said they were. I was a little surprised Toby and Amy were not more perceptive about some of the strangers. But in the end, Toby finally realizes something and, well, you'll just have to read the book.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This is a sweet love story and a big mystery, with break-ins, theft, mystery people, kidnapping, a lot of action.
What is going on in this small town? He owns an Antique Shop, and she owns a flower shop, she is crazy in love with him, and he thinks of her as a sister, really?
With non-stop action, someone wants something they have, or do they, and they are not sure which one of them has what? We ponder this as we read this page-turner, and what is going on, who is stealing and destroying things?
Yes, the answers will come, but it takes a while, and you want the answers right! Keep turning, they are here, and you will love the story the author has given us. Enjoy!

TOBY'S TROUBLES
I want to move. Here I come, Appleton, WV!!!

What a delightful story. I felt like I lived down the street from Tony and Amy. I would love to grab a coffee or have dinner with them (get to know them better).

The story is a mystery where you feel warm and cozy as you were turning the pages. The characters all cared for each other and were so likeable.

Toby does have some troubles but with Amy's help the mystery can be solved. He might even find that there's more to life than Undiscovered Treasures.

Pick up this book. You won't be sorry.

I received this free to review from Celebrate Lit.

Antique Shops, A Thief, the Community Theater, and Love
Toby’s Troubles, Book Four from the Appleton, West Virginia Romantic Mysteries series
I knew when I wrote this book who Toby was. But capturing Toby’s personality and presenting it in the right way, was a challenge for me. Readers can see his teasing, fun-loving character when he labels the person who’s breaking into his shop as a ghost. But Toby is also serious, smart and successful. The side of him who has had plenty of girl friends, but who’s never gotten serious with any of them, is prominent too. But I didn’t want him to seem frivolous and uncaring, because he isn’t that. With a focus on his interests, love has never—as of yet—been a primary concern, so when Amy Sanderson strolls into his life, she turns out to be his confidant in the time of his troubles. The question is: can she not only have a place in his life as a best friend, but also capture his heart?

Let’s talk about:

Antique Shops
Who doesn’t love a place filled with valuable items, interesting history, and hard-to-find items? Undiscovered Treasures—a shop of antiques, collectibles and junk—could be described as the town gathering place. Everyone loves browsing there. Deciding on such a place for the business of brother and sister, Toby and Caroline Gibson, was a fun choice. From grandfather clocks to unique shaped vases, it’s a shop where treasure hunters could just find what they’re looking for.
A Thief:
There are way too many new people visiting Appleton, West Virginia, so how is someone like Toby suppose to guess what the thief is after? The thief definitely knows what he’s looking for, just not where. He’s tall, thin and a fast runner, especially when escaping across a rooftop. But then, maybe it’s not a new person in town. Maybe the thief is Toby’s part time help, who has a mystery all of his own. It makes things interesting, and a bit terrifying for everyone.
The Community Theater:
One of Toby’s loves is directing and overseeing the community theater. Caroline Gibson writes some of the plays, the actors are usually taken from the West Virginia area, and all proceeds go to charities. But when their main actors, of the current play, elope and leave the play desolate, someone has to step in to fill the gaps. Toby struggles with decisions he doesn’t want to make.
Love
Toby is smart, funny, and a resourseful man. He’s also busy with his community theater activities and his business. Known as the one man in town who’s not interested, at the current time, in getting married, his reputation of loving and leaving is in danger of being wrecked by one small woman. Can she sabotage his well-laid plans and help him realize it’s now or never? Could it be the time when real love is captured by two people, even when one of them seems doomed to ignore what God’s put in their hearts?
I love creating characters. Developing them into real people with real desires, moods, troubles

My Thoughts: Everyone loves Toby Gibson, including his best friend Amy. The point is, is that Toby can't see the love that Amy has for him. When a mysterious old man comes to town, break-ins occur at the "Undiscovered Treasures" and at "Bloomin' Life" flower shop. What could they be looking for?

This is an amusing and fun read. Situated in a small town where everybody knows everyone and their business; it certainly makes for a great novel. The reader will enjoy the characters and have a chuckle or two.

This novel is full of mystery and suspense. What better place for a mystery than an antique shop? Full of old things, with lots of history. Each piece can tell its own story with a past that the buyer sometimes will never know about. Each is a treasure all of its own.

The author has done a marvelous job of portraying the characters personalities. Toby is a fun loving fellow, who loves his theater, youth group and running. He is afraid of commitment that is loyal and loving. Amy is steadfast, patient and willing to do almost anything for anyone.

There are many twists and turns in the plot that will keep you on your toes and entertained through to the end. If you are looking for a novel that any age can read, this is it. Young and old will enjoy "Toby's Troubles"

something that I brought away from this story, is that sometimes what we really need or want is right under our nose. If we search long enough or take a closer look we will find the treasure we have been looking for. In Toby's case, it's Amy, but we can apply this to our lives also. Another thought is, is that there is a treasure in everything. It can be in a friend, in ourselves, or an object and it's worth searching for.

I really enjoyed Carole Brown's writing. I will definitely be looking for more books from her and will love to visit Appleton, West Virginia gain.

Toby’s Troubles by Carole Brown is the fourth book in An Appleton, WV Romantic Mystery series. Toby Gibson co-owns Undiscovered Treasures with his sister, Caroline in Appleton, West Virginia. Caroline recently marked Toby’s best friend, Andy Carrington and they are enjoying a European honeymoon. Toby has enjoyed having the apartment over the shop to himself until someone started breaking into the shop. He has not been successful in catching the fleetfooted thief. Meanwhile, Toby is keeping himself busy with plans for the building next door which has recently come on the market, running the shop, purchasing new inventory and directing the current play for the town. Amy Sanderson owns Bloomin’ Life and has been in love with Toby since she was a teenager. She has not been able to capture his attention, but she has a new plan. Toby is dismayed when he finds out that Amy has put in a competing bid against the building. Amy has never expressed interest in the place and then she outbids him on the bedroom suite he wanted. The thief returns, but this time he breaks into Amy’s shop and tears through her greenhouse leaving destruction in his wake. Toby and Amy decide to team up to catch the intruder. Will they succeed?

Toby’s Troubles is a cute romance with a light mystery. I found it easy to read with a conversational writing style and steady pacing. I do want to recommend reading the other novels in the series prior to picking up Toby’s Troubles. I started reading and it seemed like I was plopped into the middle of a novel. I felt that I was missing the backstory on the town and the characters. It would have been helpful if background information had been provided on Toby and Amy. Appleton, West Virginia sounds like a charming small town. A great place to make lifelong friends and raise a family. Toby may be savvy when it comes to running his shop and obtaining merchandise, but he is clueless regarding women. Amy is a smart woman who knows what she wants and lays out a plan to obtain her goal. She was quite clever in how she went about gaining Toby’s attention. The mystery is straightforward with a limited number of suspects. The who is easy to figure out, but it takes longer to find out the why. I felt that the same details were rehashed multiple times and I wanted a more thorough resolution. Toby’s Troubles is a clean, wholesome story. Toby’s Troubles combines romance, mystery, humor, appealing characters and a cozy small town in one inviting book.

The book is categorized as a cozy mystery, but I've decided to call it a quirky, entertaining fun story. The town is quaint and I love the shops that are there. I love going to antique shops and resale shops. There are so many interesting items to look at. I could spend hours just looking at all the stuff in there. I sometimes wonder about the history behind the items that find their way to shelves for people to look at.

As I read about Undiscovered Treasures, I so wished that I could follow Toby around as he places his finds on display. He has a sharp eye for treasures and his shop is very popular. The intrigue of wondering who was in his shop snooping around late at night was fun to read about. He called it a "ghost" but who really is there and what are they looking for?

Amy was a bit suspicious to me at first. She loves to grate on Toby's nerves and I was appalled when she would outbid him at the auction. What in the world did she need these items for? She owns a flower shop, so why is she at an auction bidding on items that Toby wants? After several break ins around town, my suspicion turned to others in the story. My interest was piqued as Toby and Amy try to figure out what the mysterious intruder is looking for.

I loved the budding relationship between Toby and Amy and laughed as Toby has no clue just how much Amy likes him. Poor guy is lost sometimes and I wanted to sit him down and have a talk with him. The author always does a great job of developing her characters and keeping the story interesting. What lurks in Toby's shop that someone will risk their life for? Don't miss this fun book that has twists and an array of suspects.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Appleton, West Virginia, sounds like a quaint little town in which to live. People know each other, they help each other, and they are always looking out for each other. As well-liked as Toby is, it seems strange that anyone could want to do him or his business any harm. The same goes for Amy. Yet, both of their businesses have been broken into, but nothing has been missing. With some new people hanging around town, Toby cannot help but wonder why they are there and what they are doing. Nevertheless, he has nothing concrete to go on as far as who is behind the mischief. I found it fascinating that Toby relied so much on his friendship with Amy but was so clueless about her obvious desire to be more than just a friend. Everyone they knew could see it, but Toby seemed set in his ways. Detective Eddie was an interesting character. Everyone in Appleton seemed to have great respect for him, but rather than call him about the break-ins, Toby was intent on figuring it out on his own. For some reason that I apparently missed, Detective Eddie did not seem very concerned that Toby was trying to do things his own way. I think most law officers would have gotten highly offended at citizens trying to go it alone. Maybe the most intriguing detail was that no one seemed to actually know what was being sought. It was like someone hid a treasure but never told where it was hidden nor what it was. I liked the action, mystery, and just the right touch of romance. I received a copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

Toby Gibson is sure he’s got a ghost in Undiscovered Treasures, the store he owns with his sister, who’s out of town on her honeymoon. He’s alone in the above store apartment, but as sure as he is that he’s got an unwanted visitor, he’s equally sure Detective Eddie of the Appleton Police won’t be able to help. Not until his friend Amy from the flower shop on the other side of the abandoned building between them and he start experiencing real break-ins, that is.

From the moment Toby meets a grumpy old man badgering Amy who outbid him on a piece of furniture we wanted at an auction and stole his dream of expanding into next building this fourth book in Brown’s series is like coming home to old friends.

Poor, clueless Toby, is about to get a lesson in the real meaning behind best friends. It’s a riot to watch Toby get what’s coming to him while working with his friends to unravel the mystery of dark family secrets in sunny Appleton, West Virginia.

Cleverly weaving businesses and friends from the previous stories and melding them into a new mystery, Brown makes Appleton a fun place to visit. Told from multiple perspectives with good pacing. Brown’s stories are clean and inspirational, and recommended for junior high readers and up.

TOBY'S TROUBLES is, I think, the first book I read by Ms. Brown, though I have heard of one of her prior books before. This one intrigued me, but I didn't realize it was the fourth book in a series when I requested it. In case you like to read series books in order, they are: Sabotaged Christmas, Knight in Shining Apron, Undiscovered Treasures and TOBY'S TROUBLES.

I like the humor in this story, though the story itself is somewhat disjointed at times. I couldn't get a handle on Amy though she did have some point of view scenes, and sometimes readers were left completely out of the loop, and some things were unclear.

I did enjoy the story and tried to figure out who-dun-it and well, what did they actually do? How? Why? Where? When? None of the big questions were answered initially, though "who" was very strongly implied. And where the "treasure" being sought was hid was implied as well.

I'm interested in reading Rylie's story, coming, I assume, soon. If you like cozy mysteries you will likely enjoy TOBY'S TROUBLES. There are no dead bodies, if you're the squeamish sort. But there is a ghost.

Maybe.

This was a fun book to read! I was familiar with many of the characters from having read the previous book in the series, but it was great to get to know many of them better! I loved how Toby was so kind, compassionate, giving, and protective of others. I liked Toby as soon as I started reading this book, but the plot pulled me in quickly, and the book seemed to read more quickly as the plot moved forward. I thought that the mystery was well-written, because although some of the bad guys stood out as such, there were still some characters that I remained suspicious of until the very end. I did think that the ending wrapped up a little too quickly, but it had a great finish.

Fans of romantic suspense and cozy mysteries will enjoy their visit to Appleton, West Virginia with this book. It easily stands alone for those who haven't read other books in the series.

I received an ARC of this book from the author, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Toby Gibson is well loved by everyone in his community. He is an active member in the community and owns a thriving antique store. However, Toby thinks his store, Undiscovered Treasure, has a ghost. When a few disturbances occur, he believes it could be an intruder. His childhood friend, Amy Sanderson, is drawn into the search for the culprit when her store, Bloomin' Life, was broken into. Amy and Toby must work together to solve the mystery but, Amy is deeply in love with Toby. However, Toby only sees Amy as a friend and a little sister.

The cozy novel is a fun read for those who like the genre. The mystery is easy to solve but, the reason behind the crime is revealed towards the end. Toby was a bit of a character that he keeps thinking of Amy as a sister and friend but, gets jealous when she does things he doesn't like. It was fun to read the first few times but, it got a bit repetitive after awhile. This is the fourth novel in the series and while it could be read alone, it would be more helpful to read the series in order for more background on the characters.

My Review

My Rating: 5 Stars.

Recommendation: 14 up because of Romance for a romance it would be ok for a younger audience.

My favorite character/s: I like both Amy and Toby, as well as Ryle and the other characters, they were developed nicely though they aren't the most memorable characters. I liked how Toby changed even though it was only a little bit. He was kind of dense when it came to Amy which made him more likable since he didn’t see what was in front of him at first.

My Verse for Toby is Proverbs 18:22

Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord. King James Version.

My thoughts: This was a pretty nice book, and I enjoyed it but it was somewhat predictable I enjoyed how the book was set in the middle of a community that sticks together and supports each other. In all, I liked this book and will probably reread it!
I received this book in exchange for my honest review. (And I am truly happy to provide it! :-) )

Five stars for Toby’s Troubles

Toby’s Troubles is the fourth installment in the Appleton, WV Romantic Mystery series. After reading this one, I want to read the first three to complete my relationship with these unique characters. I love a mystery when it involves the melding of different personalities having to work together to solve odd occurrences. For Toby that includes “the ghost” that has decided to haunt his shop full of antiques, from collectibles to junk. He has no interest in adding any kind of relationship to his bowl of troubles. So what can he possibly do to halt any involvement with Amy, a local flower shop owner in Appleton?

I easily stepped into this WV town and became a part of the quaintness, wanting to stay a bit and become involved. I recommend this to anyone who likes a good mystery sprinkled with romance. I will read more of Carol Brown’s novels.

I was given a copy to read by the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This suspense novel contains interesting and quirky characters and plenty of happenings to keep readers guessing. Toby’s intriguing antique store Undiscovered Treasures plays a prominent role, so if you’ve read the other books in this series you will be in familiar territory. This book can easily stand alone, but it’s nice to read the series in order. Amy, his old friend and owner of the nearby flower shop, assists in trying to find out who or what is breaking in and disturbing things. Could it be their helper, Ryle? Or maybe a stranger in town? Each character is unique, but I sometimes had trouble following the action with so many people to keep track of. I enjoyed the hunt to figure out what someone might be searching for—is something valuable hidden in old furniture? The author did a good job maintaining suspense and entwining a love story in the mix. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

"Toby’s Troubles" by Carole Brown is the fourth book in the "Appleton WV Romantic Mystery" series.

"Toby's Troubles" is a love story in the middle of a mystery with a community theater thrown into the mix. I know this sounds like a lot but it is really a great story and I love how it all comes together.

This novel is filled with twists and turns. At one point I thought I had I figured who one of the "Ghosts" was but it turns out I was wrong.

I loved the ending and how the community theater made this book a hit for me. The ending was fantastic, I really was surprised, as I think most readers would be unless they are really good detectives.

This is also a story about two childhood friends, but one wants to be more than friends.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

Mystery and suspense have once again found their way to Appleton, WV. Toby Gibson and his sister Caroline own a fantastically interesting shop called Undiscovered Treasures, a name that is sure to bring all sorts of wonderful ideas to mind. Perhaps not the least is that apparently a ‘ghost’ would agree with that summation.

Amy Sanderson owns Bloomin’ Life - the best and only flower shop in town. Now one could understand that an antique store might have inadvertently landed up with something of great value, but how would a flower shop figure into that equation? The author takes us into the world of this town where everyone knows everything about everybody…..or do they?

This not to be missed fourth book in the Appleton WV Romantic Mystery series was received as a gift. THe impressions and comments made are my own and were in no way solicited.

Author Carole Brown kept my attention from beginning to end. Quirky characters that seem real, the lovely town of Appleton, intrigue, mystery, romance, and a …ghost? Such a cute read.

The fast-paced action will have you guessing “who dun it” right to the end. You will laugh, and you will want to shake people just a bit to get them to wake up to what or who is right in front of them. Although this is book 4 in the series, I haven’t read the other three and had no trouble following the story line so don’t hesitate to read this one.

If I had any complaints about this story, it’s the overuse of the word “chuckle”. At some point I think every character chuckled. But overlook it and enjoy!

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

Toby’s Troubles

Someone is breaking into Toby antique shop and then Amy place after they didn’t find anything at Toby’s. The book has the mystery of that and then Toby is trying to do a play and the actors keep leaving. I did enjoy the mystery and suspense and the book kept getting better as I kept reading.

This is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone but may have helped some to have read the books before it. I will be putting the others on my want to read list. I loved all the characters and look forward to reading more about some of them in their own story.

I received an complementary copy of the book from the author through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write an positive review

Author Carole Brown has created a methodical small town whodunnit with mysterious characters and diversions aplenty. A story that includes enough intrigue to keep the reader interested while not giving away too much too soon. Toss in a little light romance and her special brand of humor and you’ve a nicely packaged tale! Although Toby’s Troubles is written as part of a series, it reads easily as a standalone. An easy and lighthearted read!

A quirky mystery with a interesting plot and cool characters. Toby seems to be the guy everyone loves, he is likeable for this reader, but I usually don’t follow the crowd (you will like him). I really enjoyed the ghost aspect of the story, it was a funny way to start off the mystery. Amy is one of those that loves Toby, but really, really, loves Toby. She is experience some break-ins and mystery as well. So these two team up to solve the crimes!

It is a light-hearted for the most part story of faith, mystery and love. I personally, would read the others in the series to get more background on the charming area they live in. But it was easy to read this book as a stand-alone.

What an enjoyable series! I'm only missing one book in it so far, which I plan to rectify as soon as possible. In this book we have Toby. Trouble? It's at every turn it seems. How much of Toby's troubles are things he has inadvertently caused, and how much has just befallen him?

This book stands on its own, even as a 4th in the series, this cozy mystery is a cute, light read. Funny, sweet, and a reminder that even in the troubles, God has a plan.

My copy is an ARC from Celebrate Lit. My review, thoughts, and opinions are my own, left of my own free will.

My Review
Toby's Troubles is the fourth book in a series. I have read one of the previous books but not all of them. This story is set in a small town. Toby owns an antique shop and Amy owns a flower shop. They both had a break in and one of the shop had more than one break in. At first Toby suspected it might be a ghost. This story holds mystery and romance. It was a light read that also had bits of funniness tied in. Overall a good read that I enjoyed. Disclaimer: I was given a complimentary copy of this book but all thoughts and opinions are my own honest ones.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot was well written and the characters were ones you care about. It's not my typical read but I loved it just the same and I think you will too!

I loved this book that is in the Appleton, West Virginia Romantic Mystery series. Each of the books reads well as stand alone. I read this book in one day as I had to find out what happened next. I did receive a copy of this book from the author, but all opinions are my own.
