I'm pretty sure all year I have religiously read every Ruby Dixon release as they became available. Fire in His Spirit was obviously no exception.

Except for the fact, unlike all the other 2018 releases, this one fell flat for me.

Gwen was a hard character to latch onto.

She did a lot of this:
description

Where her friend, Andrea, had to do a lot of this:
description
(Not in this exact context but the point remains...)

And then I as the reader thought a lot of this:
description

For these reasons the store as a whole was a little tedious to get through. Didn't feel it entirely.

Also, the smut took WAY to long to happen for a Ruby Dixon book.

I had a lot of reader blue balls.

description

Like, girl, why you gotta be so stingy?

Oh right, cause she was too busy whining and poor-meing.

The only saving grace was legitimately Vaan. Just like every other possessive Ruby Dixon alpha, he was smokin' (both literally and figuratively of course) and I was rooting for him to finally get someone to help him find his way through the storm (sad to see it was Gwen though).

Also, the secondary plot line progressed really well and I'm eager to see where it's going for the future books. Like, I think I'm one of the freaks Ruby mentioned in her Author Note because I'm so down to see Azar's story. So so down.

Dragon apocalypse!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧
Romance: 💙💚🖤💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 😳🤬😏🤓

The heroine: Gwen - the leader (Mayor) in Fort Shreveport in The After. Her sister Daniella was kidnapped by biker nomads and Gwen can’t go after her because she has to take care of everyone else.

The Hero(s): Vaan - Vaan is crazy and can’t remember anything for more than a few minutes, but he knows that he can smell his mate within Fort Shreveport so he returns daily and threatens everyone in the fort.

The Story: Luckily Amy and her dragon mate Rast have come to Fort Shreveport and Rast is able to talk to Vaan. Though the crazy keeps taking Vaan over every day and Rast has to remind him that he has to wait for her to come out, that is Vaan demolishes the Fort he could hurt her or hurt the people she protects and then she would never love him.

Amy explains the mate bond to Gwen and she realizes to keep her sister and friends safe, she has to go with Vaan. I liked this apocalyptic world where crazy dragons reign supreme. I had only read the first of the series so far and was able to pick this one up right away. The dual narration was great and the romance was terrific. The book was quite steamy but still Gwen and Vaan get to know each other very well before becoming mates.

There is more happening in the world and things don’t come as easy to the protagonists in this one as in the first book, but I liked the way the story went and plan to read more from this series. I am liking the relationships and the action.

Mah... Gwen, the heroine, was a huge problem here! She's too whining, always preoccupied that she did something wrong or that she will do something wrong.

It's OK if that happens a few times, but here she dragged it for almost 3/4 of the book! I was so annoyed!

The poor Vaan was tortured by her contradictory actions. She will give vibes that she wants him, but when he acts on it she rejects him. Over and over again!

I felt sorry for him to be burdened with such a mate!

I'll rate this 3 stars only because of Vaan's patience!

It seems that I am in the minority when it comes to this book. Yes I gave it 5 stars , but not for the reasons you may be thinking.

Our protagonist, Gwen, thinks she is doing everyone in Shreveport a favor when she stepped up to be the mayor. When, in all actuality, I firmly believe she was just the goober that volunteered to do a job nobody else wanted. She obviously is not a good leader; and while I can't fault her for trying, I can say that whining to the people you are trying to protect isn't the way to make your community feel safe and/or cared for. Yep, I agree that Gwen's character was just annoying and pessimistic.

On to our Drakoni - Vaan. He was the one of the saving graces to this story. Gwen "sacrifices" herself to him to try to save her fort as Vaan will not stop circling Shreveport until he gets his mate. However, being Gwen, she won't accept Vaan because she's too busy continuing on with her self-loathing. Vaan isn't giving up on her - lucky for Gwen and us readers - and shows that he is one of the most swoon-worthy Drakonis of the series thus far. I don't think I could have stomached Gwen without him.

So the question remains: why did I give this installment 5 stars? Well, because of the secondary plot line and the supporting characters - of course. I wasn't really that invested in the lovebirds this go around -however I was intrigued by Ruby's decision to give this one a slow-burn vibe - but I really enjoyed all the twists and turns that happened in this book. We are finally making some leeway in this post-apocalyptic world with some pretty kickass characters. And I can't wait to see what happens next!

Fifth book on Fireblood Dragon series.
Was so excited that I read this two days ahead of our BR date.

Read, got massively annoyed but managed to finish it.

Now, the review to rant.

Gwen was too whiny, did a lot of self pitying and very indecisive for my liking.

So much pages have been wasted with her non stop

Because of her that’s why it was a struggle to turn each pages.

In my head, I was hurting her repeatedly for being such a disappointment.

But Vaan, our dragon hero, thought highly of her after he caught a whiff of her musky scent.

The sexy times took longer to happen because she second-guessed herself so much.

The saving grace of this book, without a doubt was Vaan.
However, Liam, Andrea, Azar and Melina have also provided enough dose to make this story interesting and take away readers’ misery from Gwen.

Despite of her antics, I was hoping that she would stop and clean up her act. Look, being a leader is not a walk in the park. Not even remotely. And she was smart enough to know that she was doing a poor job on leading and questioning herself endlessly. I was thinking that there will be a page where she would use those weaknesses and turn them into something positive. But alas, didn’t happen and it just dragged on. And Vaan stayed with her and mated her. Shame shame shame.

Rating this 3 stars.
3 stars were for Vaan, the new characters and the ending bit. There is definitely something brewing on the horizon and I can’t wait for the revelation.
Azar’s book is something to look forward to and so is Liam’s story.

Thanks for the BR, my lovely Abtastic Ab Loving Geishas

4 Estrellas!!

This was an ok read overall. This series has been pretty slow going and most of the books have a similar feel: an interesting beginning, a middle that drags, and an ending that expands the 'verse and actually has most of the action.

The dragons are interchangeable to me and the heroines have small variations, but essentially the same, even when they know what they're getting into.

Is Ruby Dixon still my crack dealer? Yes. Is this a quick and easy read with lots o'dragon hero love feels, even if not alot of actual sex? Yup. But I'm hoping with the latest tidbit she's dropped into this overarching storyline that she'll amp it up a bit, because I don't want to be bored and skimming the middle of a story when I know she can deliver.

This was pretty good.

Gwen annoyed me a little bit with her "woe is me" crap that dragged on way too long. But I liked the slow burn of this one, the way they learnt to communicate without a mind link for so long and overall this kind of felt like a roadtrip book but in a post apocalyptic world with dragons.

I want Mara to get a book! Could care less about Dee. I'm all about Liam and Andi and I need to know more about Azar!

And I am STILL waiting for a book with a LADY DRAGON. I NEED IT RUBY PLZ.

Somewhere between 3 and 3.5 stars.

Bring on the next one :D

Hated Gwen, wish I never wasted my time

i hated this read so damn much, hated Gwen with fiery passion!!! Just a waste of space. " I make bad decisions, " it's all my fault " I can't do anything ". For odins sake get over yourself. And while she's crying about how worthless she is she finds out she's the mate of a dragon. And we'll the terrible person she is, (so damn self absorbed) she decides, I'm going to try with him, gets all the Dragon mating info from amy and is off on her way. Well can you guess how it went, well I can tell you I stopped reading at 74% and she still hadn't mated with the guy, why, well because she's a selfish women child who can't make up her mind and her doubt and self pitty drags the poor Dragon along. I was sickened by her!!! She knew how to help him, knew she had to mate, and she just kept on in her mind, oh I can't mate with him, it will be bad, oh I want to take him back to the fort, oh you're right I cant, I'm sad, oh I'm taking him. You know what, please just let this Dragon have another worthy mate, I have never been more upset with a read from this author then I was with this book and it's main character, just disgusted! I didn't even finish, this book was a huge let down and I wish I never bothered.

2 1/2 Super Slow Stars!

It took forever for Gwen to get with the program! This was super slow and repetitive, but I was still interested in finding out what was going to happen. The last 25% was way better than the first 75%. 😟 Happy reading!

Seven years ago a rift appeared in the skies releasing real live fire breathing dragons on the world. These crazed dragons proceeded to annihilate mankind forcing the survivors to band together in fortified "forts" to survive. The fallout is that the weaker inhabitants of each fort, especially the old, the women, and children, have been forced to endure to all forms of abuse and depravity. Their only other option is to go it alone in the wild which is certain suicide.

Gwen, Mayor of Fort Shreveport, is a fraud. Yes, she has the official title of being the mayor but it's basically by default as no one else wanted the job nor was willing to step up to lead the band of misfits now residing in Fort Shreveport, Louisiana. Gwen is happy to provide a safe haven for those who would otherwise be abused or worse in male run forts, but, it has come at a personal cost.

With a look to the future, Gwen turns to Amy & her dragon mate Rast to save Fort Shreveport. Under their leadership Amy will lead while her dragon mate provides the security and ongoing safety necessary to repel the dragon attacks, though there is one persistent dragon that Rast has not been able to permanently force out of the area. Apparently this dragon has scented his mate and won't leave until he gets her.

Gwen may have surrendered her title as mayor only to find she's about to become Earth's newest Drakoni mate.

* *

As an ongoing fan of the author and series I was more than excited to get my grubby hands on the newest installment of this series. Loved the premise of shape shifting dragons who find their one and only here on Earth.

This new installment features a secondary character from the previous installment "Fire In His Furty who was a dubious character in general. The author has provided rationale for the character's traits and actions so as to now be featured in this story.

So many thoughts going through my head. The main characters. For Vaan it was insta-love though there are language, cultural, and interspecies hurdles for him to maneuver through before claiming Gwen. As for Gwen. Her side of things is more self sacrificing so as to save Fort Shreveport, however, she'll find that not all sacrifices are bad as the adult content erotic scenes are five alarm hot but what do you expect when dragons are involved.

The cast of secondary characters. All characters from previous installments are back to varying degrees. This makes sense as the author is moving forward in a new direction to the series plot line. Along with the mix of old are new secondary characters who will more than likely be featured in future installments. Andrea, Gwen's second in command, is up next with a mystery dragon of her own ... crossing fingers here for Liam.

Overall, this story provides readers with a new story to savor that includes one area that I liken to having the rug pulled out from under me. Totally didn't see that coming. Sorry. Spoiler info to the max so I am not going to say anything further about this. Nope. Not gonna..... but I oh so much want to. description

My issues. I admit I read a lot. With that in mind I do get confused so I totally appreciate when an author provides a brief summary of previous installments so I get caught up to speed. In this situation I needed to go back to verify if I was confused as things weren't as I remembered. Non-spoiler sample examples I felt were changed:
Claudia:
Fire In His Spirit: "Claudia, a thief from Fort Dallas, is left in the wild, abandoned streets of the Scavenge Lands as bait to tame a dragon"
Fire In His Blood: Claudia is taken to Scavenge Lands to a tall high building as five other girls have in the past, cuffed and manacled to a pole, and left as bait for dragon
Amy:
Fire In His Spirit: Amy tosses her panties down in the city for a dragon to find
Fire In His Embrace: "I wait until we pass a tall patch of reeds that overgrows the ancient curb that spills onto the road." ... "I flick my panties into the grass".
Fire In His Embrace: Rast epilogue: "The scent grows as I return to the old territory, diving lower. Somewhere in the grasses below she hides. I sweep over the ground, flushing out the rabbits and small game. A deer bounds away in the distance, and I snap it up between my jaws, a quick meal before I turn around. No female." ...... "I move along the ground, tracing her scent until I find ... it."

I appreciate that the author has decided to go in a new twisty turny new direction for the series .... but... I really felt this book was significantly different than the author's usual writing style and content. Further, I can get on board with character reformations and evolving in general, however, there is one character who I just couldn't believe that to be the case over. The past cannot be changed and factoids cannot be ignored if I am to believe current premise situations. On a purely personal level, things were so problematic that I found myself second guessing so many things, including the author herself. I don't say that to be mean nor confrontational, just pointing why I felt the way I did and the degree of conflict I had in general. It is for that reason (purely personal and totally my own) that I won't continue with the series. Redemption is possible but for me, nope, this character and the circumstances surrounding (spoiler info so can't say more) it lost me.

I've really enjoyed this series but this one just fell so flat for me. Gwen was whiny and annoying. I found myself getting so frustrated by her constant "everything is my fault, why does anyone want to be with me, i'll ruin their lives" routine. Like enough already! I really couldn't just enjoy the story.

It took way too long for them to consummate their relationship so there was very little communication between the two beyond a few words and gestures. It just made the story plod along. There was hardly any excitement in the book, except for the one moment when Vaan However, that was about it.

ETA:
Oh and there was so much of the c-word ( c u next tuesday) it got gross. Hate that word.

There was some development to the series and a little more is happening now but the rest of the book was just blah.

I'm not super excited to read Andi and Liam's book but I have Kindle Unlimited for the next 3 months (got a deal to get it for 3 months for .99 so I jumped on that) so I'll probably read it before my promotion ends.

It's quite difficult to develop a liking or attachment towards Gwen as a character. Her constant whining makes it hard to empathize with her. Perhaps, it would be better if her name was changed to Nancy, as she embodies the essence of a Negative Nancy. It's quite telling when the side characters prove to be more interesting than the two main protagonists. Unfortunately, the storyline didn't help either, as it lacked direction and failed to make significant progress. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

This is probably the least favourite book in the series for just about everyone and I was no exception.
Hands down, it was all Gwen.

Gwen and her whining .
Gwen and her "I'm just not good enough".
Gwen and her "I'm poison".

Poor Me Gwen ruined the book!

The saving grace and the only reason this book gets three stars was, Vaan.
I bite back my irritation because when I shift back to my two-legged form, Gwen touches my arm and makes soothing sounds at me.
Clearly I am a male easily swayed by a pretty mate.

He is probably the cutest H in the series.
And the Ehd vibes? You could knock me over with a leaf.
FYI: Ehd is the H from Transcendence by Shay Savage.

Next we have Andrea and Liam's book and they didn't really leave all that good an impression. I would rather just skip over to Azar and Melina's book even though Ruby's gonna have to work mighty hard at redeeming Azar cause right now? I just don't see it happening.

Fire In His Spirit was such a solid installment, it was a bit more confusing and the relationship was different than I was expecting, but it was still enjoyable and I had a fun time with the world building. The couples spends less time mind communicating than what we see in previous books, like it didn't happen until the very end and I felt like this got dragged out a bit too much. I did enjoy the overall serial plot and it was interesting that the hero kept forgetting things haha but I really enjoyed reading this one as a narration. These books are always so well done with the narrators that are chosen. I am very curious to see what will happen in future books in pertaining to the plot of the series as a whole. Its definitely getting more intense here and loved the mystery vibes behind this one.

Not my favorite at all.

Gwen lacks self confidence, constantly insulting herself worrying about "I'll mess everything up.. but they all depend on me.. even though I'm a screw up!"

We are given no information at all regarding her life in the 'before.' She is a leader, yet the reader is not able to 'see' her leadership in action.

She mentions worrying over a younger sister. I thought the sister was between 12 - 15 years old because of the descriptions. Turns out she is 20.

Disappointed to see A not dead.

At the end of Emma's story, I recall (maybe I'm wrong) Emma was noticeably pregnant, sneaking around eating cookies. When they meet, she has to inform them she is pregnant.

Without completing the overall series storyline, the author is introducing a new plot. Though, she did explain in the author's note (yes, I read those..sometimes)

The hero is.. blech. Nothing interesting about him. Oh well

Next story is Liam (the dragon disguised as human). I will read it because I want to read about the drakoni world and also: will Claudia finally have her baby (babies)??

This one ended up being just okay for me, I still am really enjoying this series but this couple just wasn’t a fav of mine. Gwen and Vaan are the first romance we get out of Shreveport and they have a slower build of their relationship. Vaan is very confused and lost in his mind, more so than the other drakoni we have seen thus far in the series. Gwen has to constantly remind him of who she is and that he is okay. While the beginning of the story was slower for me, I did enjoy the ending and seeing the future opportunities to come!

"Never thought, 'hey, maybe this great big honking tear will open up in the sky and a bunch of bloodthirsty dragons will shoot out and flame the world. Gotta say that on my list of end-time scenarios, that wasn't even in the top ten."

this was a fun change of pace, had a nice slow burn to the romance, and introduced a much-needed plot TWIST to really add some further FIRE to this shapeshifting dragon series.

Well, when you wait impatiently for a Ruby Dixon book and the wait is over reading a story so dissatisfying is disappointing.
3 quarters of book I wanted to slap Gwen for her indecisive thinking, whining and more whining.
Even Vaan couldn’t make the story better for me. As usual he had all the hunky, Ruby Dixon, alpha male traits but it didn’t do much for me.
The story was Meh and then towards the end it picked up speed and got a new twist. The story was good only 25% of the time. Sad.

Ruby Dixon for the love of Thor please no more heroines like Gwen. Please! I am so over them....
It’s like from the first book a switch was pressed and the floodgates of indecisiveness were open.
What happened to the strong willed and eager women? Gone in the ashes of the destroyed world?
I hope not.

And now when I look forward towards Andrea’s story I am saddened because she already appears dumber than Gwen, if that’s possible....

And so, it’s a sad day when I say that I am not waiting impatiently for Liam and Andrea’s story. 😞

This is probably the weakest of the series so far, but it is still solid. Gwen's story is different, as it explores the insecurities that many people have, especially those who say "I'm not trained for this!" This theme probably goes on a little too long, but it rings true.

The back side of the story brings the gang together and moves the series arc forward. A few new characters are introduced, and others evolve in unexpected ways. Oh yeah, and there is some hot sex.

I'll keep reading the series.

When dragons tore through a rift in the sky they destroyed the world leaving only a relatively small population of humans alive. Now, ever human has to survive not only this harsh new world but constant attacks by dragons driven mad with rage by something in the Earth’s atmosphere. The only way to stop the madness? The dragon must find their mate. Only then will a dragon’s sanity return and their blood lust dissipate.

Gwen is the leader of the small settlement in Shreveport. She was the only one willing to take the job, yet all she seems to do is screw it up. And the people who pay the price are the ones she’s trying to protect. Now a golden dragon keeps attacking the settlement, apparently in search of his mate who he can scent within. Gwen never expected it to be her. And she certainly didn’t expect to fall in love.

We are well into the Fireblood Dragon series now, we all know the score; dragons be crazy. Unless of course they can sniff out their mate, which helps bring clarity back into their mind. Fire in his Spirit follows this story line without deviation and we watch as Gwen continually brings her dragon back from the brink of insanity and violence. It’s especially hard with Vaan, our dragon hero, as he suffers from short term memory loss and can easily spiral out of control.

As always our dragon hero was adorably alpha and protective, all whilst being vulnerable because of the encroaching madness. The issue I had, which prevented me from giving more than 3.5 stars to this book was Gwen. I understand insecurity and I like it when a heroine shows a little of it. But with Gwen I thought it breached the realms of understandable and straight into whiny. I got bored of Gwen’s constant inner dialogue which revolved around how incompetent and awful she was.

However, what I did like was the blossoming romances that are hinted at; firstly we have Andrea and Liam in Shreveport and even more interestingly the baddie has gotten himself a mate! I can’t wait to see that play out. Maybe in this new world he can redeem himself? Fingers crossed! The story also continues with the possibility of something even worse coming through the rift and destroying what remains of humanity as well as the dragons.

Although I didn’t enjoy the romance very much in this one, there were hints of lots more exciting things to come, which has left me excited for what is coming next.
