Truly Madly Awkward

Rate this book
Bella Fisher is back - and is cool, calm and collected as ever. So: NOT EVEN REMOTELY. Her fledgling relationship with Hot Adam seems to have stalled mid-flight (he isn't really speaking to her), her big sister Jo has gone off to university leaving Bella to deal with ditzy Mum on her own, something is up with her best-friend-dynamic with Tegan and Rachel and horror of horrors, horrendous ex-boyfriend Luke has an ACTUAL MODEL as his new girlfriend. Mum opens up a doggy ice cream parlour - Give a Dog a Cone - which Bella is forced to help out at on Saturdays. Yes, dressed up as a dog. For some light relief she enters a radio competition to secure a performance from hot band of the moment The Helicans at her school - but another contestant begins turning into her sabotaging nemesis. Throw in a suspicious new lodger and the world's most chaotic dog agility course and you've got another truly hilarious, truly relatable and truly madly awkward story!

IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN
HAVING TO SPEND EACH DAY
THE COLOUR OF THE LEAVES
INSTEAD OF RED, YELLOW OR GOLD.
Kermit the Frog.

What a lark! And just like Sylvester the Cat on our 1960’s B&W rabbit-eared TV used to say - How EMBARRASKKIN!!!

Yeah. I was 13. And I was just like Bella.

Truly... Madly... AWK-WARD.

So now I’m flashbacking!

Over & over. Back 60 long years—

TO MY HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN YEAR! You see, I didn’t know girls, But they knew me - In fact, they Saw Right THRU me!

Like Adam, the collegiate gridiron heartthrob, seems to see through Bella.
“Wait a sec! Why d’ya say SEEMS? DOES he or DOESN’T he?”

Well, to find out the answer, look how badly YOURS TRULY (T.M. Awkward) acted back then...

It was 1963. I discovered girls. Yikes - they seemed so deep. And they didn’t laugh at the classroom boys’ - and my - wildly, hysterically funny jokes. They must be Deep. And serious. And so SMART.

So when the maple trees started to turn orange, I hatched a plan...

I would turn cool.

My pint-sized classmate Robert gave me a shove in the right direction:
“You mean you DON’T listen to the weeks’ regularly-rotating Top Ten Hits on the Campus Club? Get with the program. Every weekday - 7:30 to 8. Tune in!”

Back then, rock ‘n roll got a half-hour per night. End of story. But neither Robert or I knew what the Beatles and the Brit invasion would do to our thirsty ears, and the world’s news gossip. Yikes.

And by Christmas, I was a regular, and finding the Campus Club to be - in light of the way rock suddenly took off to the Stratosphere - BOR-ING.

But guess what?

On cold, clear winter nights I found I could tune in Cousin Bruce on WABC Manhattan on my tinny transistor radio. ZOOM - my musical interest TOOK OFF - like the newly-launched Telstar, the newly-minted hit of that month in those Kennedy Years by The Ventures. Wow.

THEN it was WCBS Chicago. Then WKBW Rochester...

But I still wasn’t popular with girls, and it was a girl named Nancy who told me WHY: “See that couple dancing, Fergus? You know what THEY are?”

Dumbly, I rejoined, “No - what, Nancy?”

“In LOVE, Fergus. THEY’RE IN LOVE!” She hit me with that. Or hit ON Me with it. But being a born Aspie, I STILL DIDN’T GET IT.

I just wanted to go through the floor.

WHAT the heck was this Soupy Business - FALLING IN LOVE???

Well, That’s Adam, too.

Guys in the novel at that age - even touchdown kings - don’t UNDERSTAND girls. They just know they’re DIFFERENT.

LOVE!? Wuzzat???

But there’s fast relief for all of us, girls - and guys, in the end.

For in the end, Bella, we ALL get it.

Even Truly Madly AWKWARD folks like you & me!

And we can FINALLY RELAX into it all.

UNTIL that day, “when you fall in love, it (will it) be Forever...?”

So, May Your First Forever Love Be Your Last!

Like mine.

*4.5*

I loved this book so much. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book but I absolutely adored Truly Madly Awkward. I devoured it, I stayed up way too late reading it and I embarrassed myself in public by laughing so hard the librarian asked me if I was okay. Don't read a Beth Garrod book in public because you will end up laughing hysterically and people will stare. YES, I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE.

Truly Madly Awkward was honestly so fun to read! There's always a worry when reading a contemporary that there won't be much of a plot and the story will move quite slowly but thankfully that wasn't the case at all in this wondrous instalment! Bella has quite a lot on her plate and, obviously, that's going to be accompanied by truly very awkward situations. In this book you will find:

1. A high-stakes competition that, if she wins, will result in Bella's all-time favourite band playing at her school
2. Her dearest mother has decided to open a dog ice cream parlour which sounds paw-sitively exciting and terrifying
3. A new lodger staying in their house that is super stylish and quite allusive...maybe too much so
4. Friendship drama
5. Boy drama
6. An ex who happens to be dating a model (isn't that fun?)

Throw all that together with an incredible main character, wonderful messages emphasised throughout the book, heart-warming writing and utter hilarity and you have Truly Madly Awkward - a book that will completely capture your heart. It was a roller coaster of a ride that had me laughing 85% time, had me cringing a few other times, had me saying “BELLA, NO!” more than once and there were a few moments that crushed my heart just a little bit. I was entertained throughout this whole book and I was completely invested in the story, feeling a whole variety of emotions. SO MANY FEELINGS.

Aside from loving the plot, I adored the characters – even more so than I did in the first book! I absolutely loved Bella. I think what I like most about her is how fearless she is in the challenging attempt to be oneself. Bella knows she can be awkward and she knows she gets into hilarious circumstances that are somewhat embarrassing but she embraces that. She even reaches a point in the book where she's completely herself with Adam and doesn't worry about appearing a certain way and she ends up having a better time because of that. It's such an important message that a lot of girls – myself included – need to hear. BE YOURSELF, because you're weirdly, wonderfully you. Bella is such an awesome character – she's funny, she's authentic, she's kind and loyal and so real. If she was real, we'd be best friends. In fact, saying “if she was real” feels sacrilegious in a way because to me she is a living, breathing human who is a good friend. That's a mark of wonderful story telling right there!

I loved the variety of other characters in this book as well! There are Teagan and Rachel, Bella's two best friends. I absolutely adore them and their friendship. They empower each other, they do everything they can to help one another and even when things go wrong between them (like all friendships experience)...they are there for each other. I loved this! YA books often have female protagonists who have a distinct lack of females friends in their life so it was incredibly refreshing reading about strong female friendships!

I love that there are strong family dynamics in this book, too! Bella and her older sister, Jo, are extremely close and I loved seeing that. I have an older brother and we're incredibly close so I loved seeing a strong sibling bond being featured in a YA book. Bella and Jo's banter was incredible and I found myself chortling at their interactions on several occasions! They were always there for one another, offering advice...and teasing one another in the process. I LOVED IT.

Bella and Jo's mom is also a prominent feature in this series and I love that we get to see even more of her in this book as she's such an entertaining, animated character. I love how she's involved in Bella and Jo's life and that they're involved in hers. I love that family is a key aspect of this book.

I also love that Adam featured more in this book – HE'S SO ADORABLE AND FUNNY AND CUTE AND I LOVE HIM A LOT OKAY. I totally ship him and Bella as their relationship is so sweet, their banter is incredible and I loved the way Adam embraced all the crazy, comical situations that seemed to follow Bella around! My squealing largely intensified towards the end of the book and I did retrieve an odd look from my mother at one point but I JUST HAVE A LOT OF EMOTIONS SURROUNDING THOSE TWO, OKAY.

What else did I love about this book, you ask? WELL. I absolutely adored the dialogue (which I may have already mentioned). It was so funny and so real. Dialogue is one of the things that can either make me thoroughly enjoy a book or thoroughly dislike a book but Beth Garrod did a fantastic job of creating believable dialogue that was charming, witty and heart-warming!

I also loved how hilarious this book was. Like, it's funny. I was reading this book whilst I was volunteering and there was nobody in the children's section except a librarian and one or two other people and I started laughing at the outrageous events happening in the book. And then I tried to stop laughing, but when I tried to hold back my laugh...it just burst ( loudly, very loudly) forth a few seconds later. I was laughing so hard the librarian asked me whether I was laughing or crying and if I was okay. Yes, it's that funny.

Another great aspect of this book is that pop culture and social media is mentioned! A lot of YA books I've read haven't featured much social media, which makes the book seem quite unrealistic as Twitter/Instagram/Youtube is such a huge part of our lives – especially young adults' lives. Bella mentions Instagram, Twitter and Taylor Swift (among other things) and it was all just so relatable! I uttered "so me!" throughout the majority of this book. I am Bella and Bella is me.

Truly Madly Awkward was truly madly brilliant! Bella is an incredible protagonist and has one of the most charismatic and authentic voices in the YA genre at the moment. This book is outrageously funny, incredibly real and I loved every second that I spent reading it. With abundant humour, a dynamic cast of characters and more than a sprinkling of heart, Truly Madly Awkward is a must-read!

Bella’s life hasn’t changed much. She’s still awkward and she is still crushing on Fit Adam. So, when her mother decides to open a dog ice cream parlour, a guest crashes on her couch and she wins a round to get a famous band to play at her school, will Bella sink or will she be able to keep her head above water?

The only reason I get the honour of torturing myself with another book of the ‘Awkward’ series is because I bought a box set (I don’t trust them anymore). If I hadn’t, I promise I would not have read book two or own a copy of book three. I hated book one and let’s just say, book two wasn’t much better.

I admit to it and everyone tells me this, I am too serious. I appreciate a book that is a bit funny but not cringe funny (when the character gives you second hand embarrassment). Bella can not do anything right. She spits on people, eats dog ice cream, hides behind her steering wheel when she see her crush, hiccup burps. She is honestly gross and really not funny at all. I know what it’s like to be awkward, but Bella is just dumb.

The other characters are not bad, Teeg is nice and Rach is pretty fun. Mikey is also okay but we didn’t see much of them in this book. Fit Adam is really sweet and Bella does not deserve him. Her sister Jo is also very cool.

This book was not as bad as book one. The Helicans were really awesome and the Shay thing was really annoying and possibly the worst plot twist ever. I loved her mum’s ice cream parlour and the end was pretty heartwarming. I also hated the Helican’s competition thing and Luke (or Puke as they call him) having a model girlfriend, Ska (what kind of a name is that) was also ANNOYING.

Also what is with all the reproductive organ jokes? It’s honestly not that funny. 🙄

Anyway, there is no reason for me to read any of these books. They are purposeless and cringe and hard to get through. I still have book three to finish but I need time after book two scarred me again. 💕

In the 2nd Bella Fisher book, we see Bella navigate friendship difficulties, her budding romance (or is it?) with Adam, a radio competition that`s piling on the pressure to win a gig from her favourite band for her school and her mum`s new business venture. While I struggled to adapt to the writing style a little at first, once I adjusted I thought the plot was fun and I definitely found myself chuckling constantly throughout! I really liked the radio competition, which was the main plot point of the novel, and I was seriously rooting for Bella to do well and defeat her mysterious rival `Letty`. I also loved how much the characters developed throughout this instalment; I feel like I got to know Bella`s friends much better and got quite attached to them, and I developed a major love for her big sister Jo, who was basically my favourite thing about this book as she was so witty and snarky, but also had Bella`s best interests at heart deep down. My other highlight was the super sweet romance between Bella and Adam and how that progressed in this book. I`m looking forward to reading more from Garrod in the future, and hopefully seeing Bella`s world grow and expand even more. 4/5

I needed something light after having read a whole lot of fantasy and.. this was it.
Did I enjoy it? Not really. Did it help me get out of my fantasy-ignoring funk? Yup!

So that's at least one good thing already.

I just.. I don't even know why I continued reading this book after reading Super Awkward a while back. It's cringe-worthy and full of drama, made-up words and.. well.. 15 year olds being 15 year olds the way I've never been that age? Sure, some things and actions sounded familiar but overall I just can't imagine making up words and screaming like a lunatic over the most stupid things happening.

I can only conclude I'm too old to read these kinds of stories - lesson learned, hah.

If you have been following me for awhile you will now I adored Beth's first book, Super Awkward. It is one of my favourites and I was so excited to see that she was bringing out a sequel to it and I was so happy to read about Bella again.

Bella is one of my favourite characters. She is so relatable and I really love reading about her. She always makes me laugh out loud, aww and even cringe some times. Bella has a lot to deal with in this book from trying to win a competition, her mother opening a dog ice cream parlour(I want to work there) there is boy drama and friend drama and an ex!
Obviously, nothing crazy will happen, will it?

Bella is a fantastic character. Even though she gets her self into some crazy situations, she is fearless and just so fab to read about.

There is such a strong message in this book about just being yourself and I loved it. It's so easy to try and be something your not to impress others and Bella sometimes does that but, even when she's herself she's wonderful and ends up having a better time than she would have if she was pretending. I love reading about this journey she went on and it's so easy to get caught up sometimes.

Also, the friendship in this book is brilliant! They have a great friendship and always know how to pick each other up and I just loved it. Her older sister Jo is great. They have such a great relationship and it's nice to read about siblings that get on in a YA book as I know sometimes siblings bash heads. They had me laughing out loud a lot.

Truly Madly Awkward is awkwardly wonderful. You won't be able to stop reading once you've picked it up. You'll laugh, you'll cringe you may even shout BELLA NO a few times like I did.

I cannot wait to see what Beth writes next!

Bella is back! Along with Tegan and Rach of course as the girls are excited about a competition to win their favourite band The Helicans to come and play a concert at their school. However, there's many stages and other schools to compete against as the radio station prolongs the process over a number of rounds per week.

Fit Adam and Bella go on a date that turns out to be just a friend date, much to Bella's disappointment, naturally.

Meanwhile Tegan is acting strangely with more and more gymnastics practise along with a strange Jaden Smith lookalike hanging around her a lot too...

As well as the boy drama, concert excite in their school goes crazy as Bella becomes a mini celeb all the students are rooting for and their headmistress too as she wins their way through the rounds of the competition by luck and effort alone. Bella also has to deal with her mother launching her new dog ice cream shop, Give A Dog A Cone! Let alone a new lodger taking up residence in their home in the form of, Shay a so called high flying TV producer.

There's tons of drama from Bella's ex Luke or Puke as she prefers to call him! As he's now dating so called model Ska, but there's more than meets the eye with the shifty pair.

As per usual, Bella promises hilarity and a side stitch from laughing so much as you read!

This is a super fun book and the second part in Bella's series so far and I totally can't wait for more as Bella and Adam may finally get to where they both secretly want them to be at!

I thought that Super Awkward was a very fun, funny and light-hearted read, and Truly Madly Awkward was also all of those things.

I love the way that this author writes and I find the emotions and the problems of the characters extremely relatable. I care about all the main characters in this series and it was nice to see more of Jo and Adam in Truly Madly Awkward. I would have liked to have seen more of Mikey in this book and I wanted to see Zac being just friends with Bella, but sadly he wasn't in the book at all (I didn't like Zac that much however, I liked Bella and Zac as friends).

I am someone who likes to know what happens to characters after the end of our time reading about them, so I also would have liked there to be a few extra chapters after the ending which show what the characters' plans are now, or that show how some of the things introduced towards the end of the book panned out. Other than this, I really loved Truly Madly Awkward.

I thought that this book was even better than its predecessor and it had me laughing almost every page. I liked the importance of family and friendship in this series, as well as romantic relationships. I thought that Truly Madly Awkward had more going on than Super Awkward, which made it a more fun read and I did like how everything ended up (even if I wanted to know a bit more about what happens next for the characters).

I really enjoyed this series despite that fact that I don't read a lot of funny/cute contemporaries and I will definitely be picking up more books by Beth Garod in the future.

This book was the epitome of middle aged adults that try to write "relatable" books, causing the book to be UNrelatable. At the beginning I cringed SOOO hard, when I found that the main character - Bella had a habit of conjoining her words. The conversations Bella had with friends and her sisters seemed so unnatural. Not to mention the ending when she her crush ask her to be his girlfriend. I don't know about you but no boy is like that, where they just ask like that. However the book was good, at points it made me laugh for example the supermarket scene when she was day dreaming about Adam and her mum decided to interrupt her thoughts with the suggestion of a pudding. If you know, you know. They are all fifteen yet they acted 13 but the book was good. My auntie actually bought this book for me after it caught my eye in Asda and my gratitude is immense.

Oh yeah I haven't read the first book, just the second. And when I found out Ska was Letty I was pleasantly surprised. And I don't get surprised easily.

I loved this book so much that I had to give it 5 stars! It’s a perfect teen fiction comedy and I think it would be a great holiday read because although the plot was detailed and lots was going on, it was a light hearted but hilarious read!

In many comedies, the storyline can be boring and not much actually happens, however I was impressed with this book because it had a heart warming story along with the hilarious, witty jokes that were thrown in as well; there really wasn’t a dull moment.

Having read the first book in the series, I wasn’t sure if this one would be as good, but it really was (if not better). There were times where I actually did laugh out loud!

It’s a relatable story and I found myself matching each character to someone that I know in real life because they were so realistic and had such strong personalities!

I will recommend this book to anyone and I am looking forward to the next one.

Bella’s second adventure is brilliant, funny & wonderfully awkward - cracking hilarious moments & jokes more times than you can scream WTAT (WHAT THE ACTUAL WHAT) - at the pages. I loved the characters, & the story - it’s got an incredibly warm message in it this book, that kindness & respect for others is something the author clearly values deeply & ensures the characters are all people you’d want to have round for tea, crumpets & a game of Sushi Go! (except Luke & Ska - anti nice people you might want to send on a long errand to buy Australian milk, from Australia). Enjoy, I certainly did! x

These books follow the story of teenager Bella Fisher who is just trying to get through life, dealing with school, ex boyfriends, her mother, annoying sister and most importantly her best friends. This particular books sees Bella and her friends trying to win a radio competition to get one of the girls favourite bands to play a concert at their school, but with an ex boyfriend out to sabotage her, a mother opening a new business and Bella’s friendship on the line, will Bella be able to pull it out the bag and win the competition?

This book was certainly a pleasant read and definitely had a lot of laugh out loud moments. A must read for anyone who loved ‘super awkward’

I love love loved this book I honestly couldn’t tell you how many times I read it! It’s really funny and had me actually laughing out loud (quite rare for a book) to the point where people might think I was mad if I read this in public ahaha. As a teen girl this was a really good read as even though I haven’t been in exactly the same situations as Bella, it’s relatable and nice to know i’m not the only one! Though some of the circumstances may seem a bit far, they’re not unrealistic and unfortunately for people experiencing them, very believable. The way the friendship and relationships are shown throughout is very realistic which is nice for once! I recommended this to a friend as a light hearted read and it’s honestly one of my favourite books!

this is a book i'll not normally read it was pretty different and a bit silly and fantasy like, but since i've finished the book it wasn't to bad. i heard that there is a 'Super awkward' book, and i wouldn't mind reading it. it's just that it's not my type of book. It's something i wouldn't read on daily bases. to be honest i wasn't very keen on reading at the start and i stopped but i went back to read it after a few months. You might say that i just didn't have motivation, and i would agree. Overall my view of this book was not to surprise it was alright nothing much but it did feel like i was living in it.

There were moments in this that genuinely did make me laugh out loud. It is a very funny book. The beginning felt a bit formulaic and pointless but I did warm to the characters and it was a fun read. I found the very end a bit trite and Hollywood, it felt like she had forgotten that storyline until it was too late and felt she had to finish it off as quickly as possible, but you can't have everything.

It took me such a long time to read because I started other books inbetween, but I still really enjoyed this book. I was laughing a lot and cringing at other times but I'm so glad that everything turned out alright in the need for bella and her family. You had no idea what was going to happen throughout the entire book and that was exciting, I did enjoy this book better than the first one

This book was a great read with easy to understand text but also with a lot of made up works which also fleshed out the main character a lot with her childish personality. This was a very light hearted novel and was exactly what i needed for a quick simple but enjoyable read as it did make me laugh and is very relatable to the teen or younger generation. i loved this story but it was a cliche and didn't have a special take on the story with a predictable ending which is why i gave it a 4.25 but not the full 5 stars, but it was very enjoyable.
