The White House, infiltrated.
The president, running for his life.
A traitorous general, intent on burning the world to the ground.

When everything falls apart, who do you trust?

President Jack Spiers fled Washington DC on the heels of a devastating attack on CIA headquarters, masterminded by one of America’s own, former General Porter Madigan. While the world believes Jack was killed in the bombing, he embarks on a wild infiltration mission, smuggling himself into occupied Russia to rescue the love of his life: former Secret Service Agent and First Gentleman Ethan Reichenbach.

Reunited, Jack, Ethan, and deposed Russian president Sergey Puchkov, along with President Elizabeth Wall—the only person left in Washington DC who Jack trusts—must work together. They piece together a desperate plan, hunting Madigan to the ends of the earth and the bitter frigidity of the Arctic, where Madigan’s world-shattering doomsday plan comes together.

Outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and outgunned, Jack, Ethan, Sergey, and the rest of the team struggle to put a stop to Madigan and his army. In the desolate extremes of the Arctic, their resolve, their strength, and even their love is tested, pushed to the absolute limits as choices must be made: choices that pit the fate of the world against the love in their hearts, and the loves of their life.

As the world crumbles around them, Jack and Ethan find themselves waging a war on two fronts—against an enemy they can see, and another, hiding within their ranks.

Who can be trusted when the enemy is within you?

This novel is a considerable improvement upon the first two installments...which isn't saying a whole lot.

Jack remains virulently unlikable. He is still erratic, especially as regards his sexuality. (Why this author feels the need to play incessant sexuality games with Jack's character...I shall never know. Insulting to actual gay men.) Insufferable, not fleshed out...though meeting his parents and seeing a bit more of his background (why did we have to wait three books for this, again?) helps, I suppose...but it's certainly not sufficient.

It's also interesting that everything that Madigan says to Jack is disturbingly accurate. That speaks volumes.

This novel is action-packed, which the author does execute well.

It doesn't make up for the terrible drama. And the whole "turning everyone gay for...X" is just wacky. By the time Sergey catches The Gay, there's no way to take these books seriously.

The endings are (surprise!) beyond saccharine. The only couple that's remotely believable is Adam and Faisal.

There remain the usual plot holes and significant misses.

The Gay For You garbage is pathetic. Degrading and pandering M&M's excrement.

I'm not sure I've ever said this about a book, let alone a trilogy: I honestly wish I'd never read this.

The end of the book finds me:
a) With a huge headache because I might have pushed myself too hard to finish the book….because I really wanted to know what happens next and some of the terminology was a bit too hard to follow and I had to reread certain sections. I am only a poor Greek woman with English as her second language after all.
b) Without fingernails. I may actually need 2-3 weeks before I attempt manicure again. But it was the only way to let off steam. My nonstop swearing as well as my constant shouting such as “Die bitch, die!”etc. did not help much.
c) With a huge smile on my face which makes me look like a lunatic and has almost made my husband ready to forbid me to read any more books. Ever. Unless I wanted divorce. (Ok, I convinced him that I will be normal again soon)

And yes, I remembered to feed my too-young-to-feed-themselves children. I am not that cruel…

“Let’s not do that again.”
(I am joking…Of course I want more!)

This is book 3 and obviously not a standalone. So, let’s see where we were in the previous book:
Ethan though that the love of his life abandon him, so he left for a suicide mission that only a few people knew about it. Jack realized his mistake when he was almost assassinated and ran after Ethan but it was really hard to find him.
At the same time, world is falling apart. Twisted Former General Porter Madigan, his best friend Former Captain Ryan Cook, their army and their supporters are preparing its end at Artict.

And this is why the following people have ended up lost in Siberia, trying to stop Madigan:
1. A disappeared First Gentleman
2. The ghost of the USA president
3. A Russian president on the run
4. A declared dead Russian hero
5. A team of marines with a South Arab Prince in the team

Well, yes the book is complicated and full of nonstop action. In comparison with the previous two books, this is the book with the most action and battles. It will take your breath away.
It has just a few, a handful really, of breathing moments and then the action resumes with bigger surprises.

There will be no glamour in this book, no balls, no official visits, no gala dinners, no crystal glasses and no china dishes. There will be blood, grenades and bombs, bombs everywhere. There will be lots of ice and snow and salty water.

“What would the American people say if they saw you now?”
“They’d ask me why you’re still breathing.”

It is time for:
-heroes to surface
-a few traitors to be exposed

And all of these sprinkled with:
-lies, secrets and pain
-Claustrophobic situations in a submarine
-A few misunderstandings
-A lot of useless flowers and
- Many well disserved tears because yes true men can really cry without shame

But you will also read about:
- A few declarations of love
-Some funny moments
-A few proposals
-A few weddings
-Lots of stars, because “A river of stars stretched overhead, and the black ocean reflected their glimmer, an endless wash of sparkling perfection.”

The love between Ethan and Jack will be stronger than ever (although romance is not the main focus of the book, I have to admit). There will be hearts and kisses, stares and touches, hugs, entwined fingers and tangled bodies. Perfection! :)

And this is where I am finishing this rambling review…. You need to discover the rest of the details yourself!

Anyway, MORE Ethan and Jack and a bit of Russian help on the side. Yeah, OKAY. I am COOL.

How in the hell to review this book?

And you probably wouldn't believe me even if I tried.

Twist after twist, turn after turn....betrayal, secrets, lies and yet somehow underneath all of the action is some love.

And not just with our main characters Jack and Ethan. Yes, this was the conclusion of the plot going on involving Jack and Ethan but in this installment we got so much more of some of the side characters - Sergey, Sasha, Adam, Faisal.

And it made me want more. So much more. I really really fell in love with Adam and Faisal in this one. And Sasha and Sergey. Sasha has been a favorite of mine from the moment we met him. But boy could he be stubborn.

If I had to guess, their story will be next. But I really hope we get more of Adam and Faisal too.

These books really can't be read as standalones. And why would you want to? All of these books read like a TV show or a movie. Action-packed, nail biting moments, and some swoon to balance things out.

I don't know how Tal does it. But they made me read and love (a) a three book series about the same couple, (b) a three book series with low levels of steam (but plenty of swoon to make up for it) and (c) three LONG ASS books #length aversion with this latest installment clocking in at 9000 locations.

So is this series worth it?

------------------------------------------------

It's happening.....

So excited. So nervous.

It may take me until release day to read it (9000 locations, whaaaaat?)

Audio 4.75 Stars...I gotta give it to Mr. John Solo! Although the Russian accent was a challenge for him, he more than made up for it with his energetic and emotionally infused performance! If this series didn't have him passed out from exhaustion, then he must be superhuman.

Story 4.25 I Barely Survived this Series Stars!

I didn't think the series could get any more intense until I listened to this 3rd book! 😱😰😵🤯

It was alot! And then it was alot more. It was boarding on too much. The twist and turns were dizzying! The betrayals were heartbreaking. The revenge was violent but sweet! Gawd, I love it when the bad guys suffer before meeting their end. 😈

Yes, I had to take several breaks to catch my breath, but this series was totally worth it. I am now a Tal Bauer fan. I totally understand and agree with the hype! 😍

Phew! I finished this series.. YAY!

description

Good thing this one didn't fall under the last book curse. Thank you Lawd.

This was action packed, political mixed in with some touchy touchy romance moments.

This one picks up where book 2 ended. I have to admit there were some OTT and eye rolling moments. The writing gets a little bit flowery bordering cheesy but that didn't bother me much.

The research was thorough, i guess the author wanted to be authentic, he did achieve that. Kudos.

I am so happy we had the story of three couples in this one. Otherwise i could have been bored.

Jack and Ethan - I love them, i really do! they are cute, they have chemistry, got some mad hot sex. At the same time i found their relationship too vanilla. I am happy they have each other, they can be mushy together.

Adam and Faisal - GAAAAAAAHHH! I LOVE THEM. This is one couple that fits perfectly. Their conversations are so interesting and engaging, i wanted more of them , i wish they were the main focus. Too bad we can't always get what we want.

Sergey and Sasha - Well, talk about an odd couple. I like them, still not convinced but i can see them together. Ugh! I love Sasha but he is a freaking stubborn man, i don't think i can manage to be patient reading their story.

The political theme took centre stage, at times i zoned out and forgot what i was reading, it was overwhelming and interesting at the same time.

Overall, it was a good read. This series gave me Adam and Faisal. I count that as a total win.

Enemy Within is book three in the Executive Office Series by Tal Bauer . This book is a continuation of the first 2.5 books and needs to be read in order to understand completely. The characters remain the same from the first 2.5 books and there is some timeline revisits and a lot of remembering from the previous books. This story is told in an Alternating POV or Third Person Multiple. This POV allows us to get inside our characters heads, and follow them each as they all work on saving the world from the Crazy General Madigan while working against someone on the inside who wants Madigan to succeed.

To say I loved this story is an understatement. It is, in one word, Brilliant! I really do not want to go into details about the story because I would hate to ruin anything for any reader out there.. this is a story you MUST experience as it is intended. I will warn you that if you are going into this story looking for a lot of hot man on man action, you will probably be disappointed. While there are plenty of scenes that are appropriate to the storyline, after all, you can't really stop and get it on with your lover while you are trying to save the world from madman - I think what was there was perfect.

Throughout this story, we get to see all the characters as mentioned and our couples are all there in one way or another - there is President Jack Spiers and his First Gentleman, former Secret Service agent Ethan Reichenback; Russian President Sergey Puchkov and Sasha Andreyev; and Lieutenant Adam Cooper and Prince Faisal al-Saud. There is a lot of emotional times between these three couples as they are uncertain each time they see each other if it will be the last - will they all make it out of the arctic alive? One thing is for sure, these six and their teams are Outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and outgunned yet they don't ever give up.

While Ethan, Jack, and crew are all out trying to actively save the world, there are people among them who are working for Mad-Man Madigan - people they trust, people they know, people who are reporting to Madigan their every move. Who? Why? When? Those are all thing you are going to have to find out as you read the story.

Make sure when you start this book you literally have all day and night to read, because once you pick it up - you're not going to want to put it down and it is a long book coming it at over 450 pages. Cover to cover it is packed with action, mystery, breath-holding moments to pulse-pounding excitement-- I laughed at some of the crazy things that happened or certain moments and cried during certain moments. I totally could keep reading about these characters, there is soo much more that could be written, not that there was anything left gaping open, no cliffhangers, It is just one of those storylines that could easily go on...Overall, totally loved it!!

5 Brilliant Stars - and now I wonder - when can we have more?

Original review March 2017:

***5 Completely-Blown-Away Stars***

Umm, no worries, this gif is not a spoiler! Enemy Within picks up right where Enemy of my Enemy ended and Jack, Ethan, Sergey, Sasha, Adam and Faisal and all the others try to stop former General Madigan and his henchmen from pursuing his idea of "a new dawn rising", from creating a new world order by destroying everything known to mankind at any sacrifice, which would not only affect America, but the world in its entirety. To make things worse, each step to achieve their goal is endangered by Madigan's followers who already infiltrated them on the inside. With just a few men against an army, outmanned and outgunned, the odds are against them and their time is running out.

By scattering our heroes all over the northern hemisphere, Tal Bauer sends us on one hell of a ride that will make you clutch at any straw for a moment to breathe...

I will keep this review as spoiler free as possible, so I won't go into detail about the storyline. I just promise you that you will be sitting most of the time on the edge of your seat. Well, umm, at least that is what I did. I could not sit still and was fidgeting the whole time. I am even pretty sure that I discovered the one or other gray hair when I looked in the mirror today, that what is left of tearing it out I mean. There are lots of jaw-dropping situations where I wondered if one of the characters I came to love so much during all the books would make it and I am more than happy that Ethan kept Jack in good shape beforehand,...

...so he was able to keep up with the other guys.

Of course there are also scenes that made me laugh out loud due to a certain adorkable Secret Service Agent and others that made me cry -sob even- when it was questionable if Jack and Ethan, Sergey and Sasha or Adam and Faisal would see the love of their lives, respectively each other again.

But most of all, each and every swoonworthy moment was the one thing that conjured a goofy grin on my face and made each situation when my heart leapt into my throat that much more bearable.

These moments kept the balance in this book. These moments helped the characters have some time for themselves, have some time to recover and not only them, but me too.

Obviously, suspending your disbelief seems to be once again mandatory, but for one thing, the story takes place in the near future and who knows what will be feasible by then and and for another thing, thinking about the current political situation, this...
Our leaders must be accessible. They must be trustworthy. If our leadership is not accessible, honest, and accountable, we run the risk of our nation sliding into a degradation of democracy and a despairing illusion of freedom.

... leaves some doubts about the story being that far-fetched.

Tal Bauer did once again a great job with his research, be it regarding locations, religion or events that actually took place at some point and which he included perfectly into the story. If you are interested in more details, make sure to read the author's notes at the end of the book.

The story arc is complete, everything is wrapped up, but the author left the door open to continue with the series at some point down the line. Well, it is pretty rare for me that I love each and every character in a book -at least the good guys-, and yes, okay, Adam and Faisal are still my favorites, but this being the case, I so wouldn't mind a sequel. I WANT MORE!!!

I still have that disappointed feeling going on. I still don't like the ending. I adore how close Jack and Ethan become, but there is just so much going on in the book that everything just becomes too damn much. There's so much information, so many POVs and you just feel stretched thin, to be honest. I found myself skimming a lot, mostly because I was just interested in Ethan and Jack's part and because I was tired and wanted the re-read done.
New Rating: 2.5 stars.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Disappointed*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

I'm actually quite disappointed. Specially in the ending. In my eyes Jack Spiers (46) will Former Special Agent - now first gentleman - Ethan Reichenbach (41) is still amazing. Never giving up, always ready, and can handle a lot of pain. I have huge respect for the guy and his love. Jack and Ethan is great together, I even accept all the clichés and all the I love you's. They are just so adorable.
“Congratulations, Mr. President. You’re a damn lucky man.” He gripped Ethan’s shoulder. “This guy is something else.”
“I am.” Jack smiled, laughing at the flush Ethan felt rising on his cheeks. “I really am the luckiest man on the planet.”
“And don’t forget it.” Scott's voice was teasing, but his eyes had a sheen to them, a hardness, an unspoken promise.

The other characters were awesome; Sergey Puchkov's a terrific character, who helps build up Jack's character. Sasha Andreyev is brave, awesome and loyal, but I did want to slap him in the end though... Adam Cooper and Faisal al-Saud is a nice add to the story that makes it whole. Overall, I'll miss the characters, specially Jack and Ethan (with the team of Scott Collard and Levi Daniels). However, as I said; I didn't like the ending, nor did I feel like we got a closure for our couple. I wanted more.
“I will always choose you first. You are my everything. Always.”

This book was a fucking banger start to finish. And that’s saying something for a story almost clocking in at 500 pages.

If my heart wasn’t in my throat, as the characters raced against the clock to (once and for all) put a stop to General Madigan’s mental plan to destroy the world (and reshape it in his image), then my heart was swooning or down right skipping a beat, as each of the three core couples of the series shared some of the most harrowing moments (I’ve ever read in romantic suspense) one minute, to then sharing some of the most epically dreamy love declarations the next.

This is romantic suspense at its best. Bauer really nailed the most perfect and impressive balance of action and drama with the pitch perfect elements of romance and friendship. The relationships are, of course, fantastic, but the level of storytelling here, in terms of plot and execution, were phenomenal. The research and attention to detail when it came to all the political and military stuff was just mind blowing. Honestly, I have nothing but mad respect for an author who can pull this off the way Bauer does time and again.

But what’s an impressive story without impressive characters!? And, oh boy, does this series have some impressive (and damn memorable) characters.

To Lt Adam and his Saudi prince Faisal, you two broke and remade me about ten times over. The depth of love these two shared, against such great odds? Gah! The epicness of them will remain firmly planted in my heart for a long time to come. The only true travesty here is that Adam and Faisal didn’t get their own full book… now that would have been one for the ages.

To Russian president Sergey and his stubborn AF fighter pilot Sasha, holy shit the back and forth between you two!! The will they won’t they almost killed me. Again, the challenges they face as a potential couple are astronomical and Sasha’s defeatist mindset did not make it easier, despite his countless hero moments (BADASS!), but fuck I love me some Sergey when he knows his own mind and heart and refuses to let Sasha give up on them. Knowing there are two more books about Sergey and Sasha, both excites me and stresses me out. I’ll definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to tackle the angst of it all.

Lastly, and most ardently, to President Jack Spiers and his first gentleman Ethan Reichenbach, your pains were my pains, your joys my joy. I adored every second of your love story—even when I was almost passing out from the stress of what was going one around you (and to you!). Jack and Ethan are A-level #couplegoals; easily among the top ten of my favourite M/M couples, which is saying something because I’m a couple thousand M/M romances in by this point and I’m quite a stingy bitch when it comes to high praise of this sort. Yet, I can’t wait to revisit Jack and Ethan’s story again and again.

This entire series is an instant favourite and I hope any M/M readers, who love themselves some high-quality romantic suspense, will give this a go. You won’t be disappointed.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! <3

This is it. The final battle that will remake the world or destroy it. Enemies working together for a common goal, new friends forged in battle and love blossoming and surviving. It is nonstop action.

I don't even think I can write a review that does this book or this series justice. I stayed up late and got up early every day to read this book. My heart broke and my gut clenched. At times I wondered why I was doing this to myself, only to get a moment of swoon-worthy romantic confessions of love. This series has it all.

Let me reiterate from previous reviews in this series, I am NOT a political/suspense romance reader. I steer far away from them because 9 times out of 10, the romance is second to the action. And while this series is chocked full of action and suspense, underneath it all is still the beautiful romances that are throughout. It filled every need I had in a book. The writing is phenomenal. I would recommend it to everyone.

Jack and Ethan have fought a long hard fight to get their HEA. Saving the world is no easy feat. And man, were the bumps, bruises, blood, wounds and broken bones a plenty. Not to mention the death toll. This series is full of it. And then, to turn around and not know who to trust or who is your friend or your enemy. I will say Bauer left me guessing until the bitter end. I had no clue who the moles were. Some may have guessed from clues within, but there are so many things either way to keep you guessing. And of course, more "oh shit" moments.

Now, I will go crawl in a hole and read pure fluff for days to reset my system and my heart. I have absolutely NO regrets reading this series even if it killed me.

I'm not sure I've quite recovered from Enemy Within to write a cohesive review. 🤷🏽‍♀️
80 % of the book had me stress-snacking and taking many breathers.
Tal Bauer is a master of suspense.
I'm quite certain if gush-worthy romantic moments weren't sprinkled in between all the insanity, I would have crumbled in a mess of anxiety.
General Madigan was just hitting them left and right. No breaks. No sympathy. Just an iron fist of violence and cruelty. He terrified me. I am officially terrified of a fictional character.
Everywhere they turned someone unassuming, a friend, an ally stabs them in the back.
I was starting to question who else, who else would betray them? Doubting everyones intentions. Mind fuck.
This story was like an action movie, slipping in an out of scenes, POV constantly shifting. Crazy ass heroics.
But fear not there is a light at the end of this very dark labyrinth.
There are three beautiful love stories that will feed your romantic soul.

What an amazing series. Worth all the lovely reviews. Mind blown by the amount of research that Tal Bauer did to bring this world to life. Exceptional writing style. Edge of your seat read. Well worth all the calories I inhaled to get through this. I now cannot wait to jump into the spin-off that follows President Sergey and Sasha. Onwards.

It has certainly been a wild, mind blowing ride! This series, featuring a widowed president falling for his secret service agent, kept me on my toes and consistently brought so much heart stopping action and twists and turns, along with some fabulous epic love!

No doubt Jack and Ethan have been to hell and back several times, and it really does seem the enemy has all the advantages, but never fear that they won’t come out on top. What also made this a standout series are the other two love stories that run parallel, each with their own challenges, heartbreak, and swoony triumphs.

For me, the second book was the best installment in terms of shocking developments, the angst and life threatening situations, and the brutal testing of Jack and Ethan’s love that brought them out of the fire, stronger than ever. The finale is all you could ever want and then some, but it will often require huge feats of suspending belief. That didn't ruin my enjoyment at all, as everything ties up so very neatly and perfectly that I couldn’t ask for more.

This story will not soon be forgotten and is highly recommended!

Wow, this book! I was on the edge of my seat through most of it. Action packed, suspenseful, a few swoony moments, and Jack & Ethan (and our other couples) finally get their happy!

Now, before I get into my review, there are a few things to cover:

1) If you have not read the previous 2 books (and the novela) read them first, as Enemy Within is not a stand alone book.
2) Suspend your disbelief. Turn it off, if you can. This series takes place a bit in the future where science is more advanced than it currently is. Also, the intrigue and suspense plot did strain my credulity here and there, but I don't say that like it's a bad thing, at all. The story is exciting and fast-paced and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
3) And sit back and enjoy the ride. And hang on tight!

Enemy Within is a touch contemporary a little futuristic a bit of sci-fi, a huge helping of suspense and a whole lot of awesome.

The story picks right up where Enemy of My Enemy left off with General Madigan planning his evil and Jack and Ethan working to stop him. And the cards are stacked against them. I am not going to talk more about the story, though, because this one is meant to be experienced, not spoiled!

I will say that Jack and Ethan are just wonderful together. They didn't have a lot of time to get down and dirty (they have a world to save, after all), but they managed a few moments and they made me swoon more than once. And I was cheering on two other couples, as well. When you know the world might end in a moment -- really know it -- it puts things in perspective. Adam and Faisal were my second favorite couple and I cheered them at every turn. And then we have Sergey and Sasha -- no telling which them is more stubborn. The point, though? Live for today, because tomorrow might not be.

Those of you that have read the first two books, you are in for a treat here! And if you've been waiting until the story arc resolves in order to read this series, you can safely do so now. Enemy Within wraps things up, pretty well. I'm not going to say it's all neat and tidy, though. Tal Bauer can still take the story further, if he chooses to do so, since there are a couple things left open ended, but the story arc that started with Enemies of the State has resolved -- so what are you waiting for?

07/11/2023 reread

06/06/2022 reread

06/29/2021 reread. That was an evening or two well spent. Enjoyed it even more this time around.

Wow, that was too much and not enough! By the time I was finished I fell in love with the men who gave their all to protect the planet. Oh, how hard they loved and fought because they had so much to lose. Jack and Ethan were absolute darlings that made me sigh, Adam and Faisal were so endearing and loving, Sasha and Sergei nearly destroyed me with their words and choices...that beach of heartbreak! It was so thrilling to be along for the ride with these heroes, for they were heroes - in danger, on the edge of the world and facing the most deranged mastermind ever lived.

There is constant on edge tension, betrayal and risk of discovery. It was too much but I could not stop. Who was friend or foe? There were so many questions, and the author slowly unveiled them, peeled the layers off to the center within - how one man's ambition nearly brought the world to its knees. I loved it. I loved the turbulent emotions, the impossible odds, the nick of time rescues and the heart rending moments that made me tear up all over again. I am putting this series in my definite reread favorites. So much heart and courage, so much strength and determination, so much work and sacrifice - I have to experience it again. Absolutely sublime series that cemented these men in my heart! Loved it!

Wow this book ... this series .... bloody amazing. It's a 5 star read based on the research itself let alone the absolute nail biter of a thriller that had me engrossed for days ! Ethan & Jack, Sergey & Sasha, Adam & Faisal - all important and all relevant, highlighting the need for change in this 21st century world. No spoilers here- it's a must read political thriller with so many twists and turns. I absolutely loved this and it's one of my favorites for this year. Maybe an epilogue novella would keep us readers satisfied- I really want to know how these couples moved on ❤❤❤

Every single thing that I wrote in my review for Enemies of the State? It applies here. Two-fold. And to Enemy Of My Enemy (because, let’s face it, I wasn’t writing crap while curled into a fetal position on the floor).

Having already put Olivia Pope me (thanks, R!) through the gauntlet, I’ll spare her another go-round. But since we are on the topic of fictional presidents...

And yes, that was a shamelessly flimsy attempt to justify inserting a handsome half-naked man here. Fitz looks nothing like Jack. But enjoy anyway.

Tal Bauer wrote a smart and thrilling saga. The vast international machinations, the gripping conspiracy, the covert intrigue culminate in a fierce battle for the future of humanity. While it is not always at the forefront, the love between Jack and Ethan remains the heart of the story. For all the dazzling and deftly-paced action, the messages that ultimately resonated most strongly were love, and hope, and acceptance, and peace.

Ethan and Jack are so special. There is a purity to their relationship, to their respect and reverence for one another. There is a simple but potent sweetness in how they look at each other, how they think about each other. I am NOT a lover of sap. I have, in fact, been known to roll my eyes at sap. Yet despite their endearments and their effusive professions, Jack and Ethan never ventured into eye-rolling territory for me. Perhaps because their love was such a hard-fought triumph. Perhaps because these bruised and battered men so needed, so deserved, love.

Whatever the reason, I found their relationship – all three featured relationships, really – refreshing. I have become a bit jaded by stories where one half of a pairing has a “I’m going to hop on a random peen” moment because they aren’t “officially” together (or is a cheater-cheater-garbage-eater). Since nothing kills a romance dead faster for me, this special snowflake appreciated this “safe space” 😜 I appreciated their fidelity, their unwavering loyalty. I appreciated that I could believe in their happy ending. That type of devotion exists in real life, and showcasing it didn't make the story less compelling.

If Mr. Bauer was concerned that a Cleveland, Ohio area IP address repeatedly visited his website over the past week, I will confess that it was me, devouring the Bauer Bytes in tandem with the novels. I was giddy to read more about Adam and Faisal, who brought me to tears and who, similar to Ethan and Jack, possess such reverence for one another that their dynamic reads as holy. And while I was also giddy (and relieved!) to read a follow-up about Sergey and Sasha, I’m still a Nervous Nelly. Their relationship won’t be easy, but I have faith that it will be worth it.

For all I know, that airplane exchange between Doc and Coleman was just Coleman giving Doc a taste of his own medicine. So I probably shouldn’t be invested. But guess what? I AM.

I still cackle whenever Welby appears. I loved him. I loved pretty much anything and everything that Scott said and did, I loved Levi protecting Elizabeth, I loved the unlikely hero White House aides, I loved Barbara's cashmere sweaters, I loved the gloriously grumpy Ilya, I loved Anderson and his relationship with his son. I’m a hot mess of love for these characters.

I found The Executive Office series exhilarating and affecting. I'm holding out hope for an announcement of a follow-up series.

4.5 stars. This book takes the term "well earned HEA" to a whole new level, because damn! Now that I've finished it, I feel like I need a vacation. O.o You know those super-vague annoying reviews? Sorry, but this is going to be one. You need to experience every, single damn thing for yourself. Before you start, buckle up. And bring alcohol. *my mistake, I did not*

I was happy with how Ethan and Jack ended and God knows they deserved everything. It was painful to watch Jack struggle with all the things that happened but I think he came out of it stronger, in the end.

Though I really, really wanted to strangle Tal Bauer repeatedly for putting me through the damn wringer so badly, I have to hand it to him that his plotting was simply amazing. The amount of research that must have gone into this had to be staggering, and it shows. The action absolutely had me frozen in terror in places, and that is NOT an exaggeration. His characterizations were wonderful, I cared so much about these book-people and about what happened to them. There are really bad guys in this book and I consider it such a feat that he managed to just about completely hide some of them, and that's something that I almost always guess. This was a complete TRUST NO ONE scenario, and it was maddening as fuck. *Because I had no alcohol, I had to resort to cussing. A LOT*

Does this series stretch believability? Yeah, sometimes. But sometimes, it's terrifyingly believable. And when it's not, you just simply don't care, because the story is just that damn good!

The only reason I don't give this 5 stars, and this is just my own personal irritation, . *grumbles* Yeah, I'm a little bent over it, LOL.

This was a heart-stopping, pulse-pounding, pull-your-hair-out kickass story and a great series! Loved it!

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

In the length of his entire life, he could point to one unwavering truth: he loved Ethan to the depths of his soul. And Ethan loved him in return. And if that was the worth of his life, if that was what all he had, well— He was the wealthiest man who had ever lived.

You ever finish a book and go ‘what the fuck just happened?’ Well I have (and just did), and the answer is: EVERYTHING happened. There’s not a single thing that *didn’t* happen in this book. Maybe I should wait longer and let everything sink in before I write the review, but where’s the fun in that? There’s not a lot of coherent thought going on at the moment.

I can’t even imagine writing a book with this many characters, locations, languages, cultures, POVs, etc. I listened to the audiobooks so it was a struggle to keep track sometimes. These definitely aren’t books you put on as background noise. All of these storylines and timelines finally matching up, figuring out who the mole is, being just as unsure about who you can trust as the characters are, edge-of-your-seat action and suspense, and legit wondering if any of the characters were going to survive the day (lol), there was shit going down from the very first to the very last page. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

Ethan and Jack finally got their (seriously hard fought) HEA. Sasha and Sergey broke my heart and my tear ducts, and Adam and Faisal obliterated what was left of my limping heart, lol. Three pairings and three equally emotional stories. And that’s just the romantic relationships. Again, Tal writes fucking fantastic action and suspense. The thriller elements were top notch in this, and Tal’s ability to write graphic violence that makes me go ‘eww’ and ‘rad’ at the same time is just one of the many reasons why I love this author so damn much.

I probably wouldn’t recommend this series unless you enjoy suspense and politics, because there’s a lot of it, but there’s three beautiful love stories in the mix as well. Honestly I want everyone to read the books.

He kissed Ethan’s temple. “I can never leave you, no matter what’s at stake. You are my world, Ethan. My everything.”

But most of all, he’d chosen Ethan, time and again. And he’d never regret that.

Good God, what do I even say in this review?

Fucking finally? Because this series took me AGES to finish. And this book sucked the draining life serum off me. If you know me, you know my existence stands for: hoeing and clowning. And this book (/series) was the polar opposite of everything I know and love.

Damn you Tal, bloody damn you.

Ethan’s eyes, his gaze fixed on Jack’s, filled with a brilliance to rival the sun

Final BOOK Rating: 3.7stars ✨⭐⭐✨
No matter how much I HATE Talk and adore Ethan and Jack, this book was 95% plot and 110% action filled scenes and about 25% of the soft, beautiful, heart-aching and gob-smacking absolutely EVERYTHING scenes of our three couples was so utterly perfected, I just-😳🤚

I'd give real money to see this series on cinema.

Overall SERIES Rating: 4 stars💝💘✨⭐

Facing Leslie had revealed to Jack that his love for Ethan truly was bone-deep. Something that lived and breathed in his soul. Something that couldn’t be broken and couldn’t end, he’d said. “I was never more certain of anything in my life than coming back to you. Choosing you, Ethan, over everything.”

There was nothing in the world that could stop their love. Nothing at all.

He swore he heard Ethan’s heart, beating in time with his own.

Ethan and Jack is the meaning of true love always, the utter perfection of having your other half beside you, and no matter what fucktard manages your way, you'll rise or fall, together. What Ethan and Jack shared is unquantifiable and the heart of this series. It's seeing the magic of what they share so truly worth protecting and I'm just in awe because I feel like people I know today are so individualistic, and that's fine and all and I'm happy for them, but the magic of seeing two people who need each other, who brace together and hold onto each other, who are incomplete without the other is nothing short of perfection in my eyes.

Out in the wilderness, in the forest, they’d fallen into a different kind of caretaking. A sharing of two lives, each supporting the other’s existence. It was primal, in a way, how they had fused together. Half of his life was in Jack’s hands, and instead of feeling vulnerable, it was the most natural feeling in the world.

Two souls in tandem with each other: his and Ethan’s. Being without his other half felt like a piece of his own heart, his own soul, was missing.

He’d never known it was possible to love someone this deeply, this entirely. His whole world had been remade, and even himself, reborn into a new man. A man who shared half a life, and half of his soul, with the one person who meant everything. With Jack.

Life was just a little bit brighter, a bit more warmer and wholely fuller when Ethan and Jack were together and I'm just, it's weird saying this CUS I KNOW ITS FICTION but give my cracked brain a break because, I'm really happy for Ethan and Jack and I'm so fucking elated they have each other.

Somewhere, between national security and the safety of the world, between trying to prevent an apocalypse and looking into a man’s eyes, there was a line in the sand called loyalty. Love, even.

But he’d also found Ethan. Had fallen in love with him, and found the man who’d unlocked the depths of his soul. Found the love of his life.
That was true. Their love, their life together. What they built. What they shared. The vows they made, first by their choices and their actions, and then by their rings and words. Their love was the foundation of his life, the very definition, the meaning of his life. Beyond politics, beyond the presidency, beyond even the world; Ethan was everything that made his days worth waking up for.

If there's one character who I love more than my brave and fearless Ethan, it's Scott. Scott Collard. Just... What a soul. He's the kind of friend everyone wishes to have, who everyone cherishes to have piece of who he is in their lives, who is so selfless, and courageous, strong, and loyal and truly... If there's one person I want to thank further than Tal, it's him. Scott Collard is the definition of limitless. He would do anything for his family and would die knowing he protected them with everything he had. Scott Collard is an angel.

He and Sergey, two middle-aged men. Ethan and Sasha, men too devoted for their own good, with hearts and souls too big for this world. And Scott, a beacon of eternal friendship, of fidelity, enough to make him want to weep.

Jack tried to smile, but it wavered, and then fell. He looked down, exhaling shakily. How could he ever thank Scott the way he deserved? From the first moment until the last, Scott had been their steadfast friend, a bulwark against the world. How many times had Scott saved their lives? Stood up for them? Helped them when no one else would? How many drives had Scott done for each of them? From the big gestures to the tiny. How many times had he turned from the front seat with a friendly smile, just doing what he could to help?

If someone asked me where this book began to where it ended, I wouldn't be able to give you answer because holy fuck did so much happen within one breath of a line, thirty seconds of a paragraph and chapter after chapter of so much more.

And yet...

I feel like, this series, isn't quite... Complete, yet.

I want to know where Jack and Ethan are after the ending.

How are the lives of Faisal and his Habibi? How are they holding up? What's going on with them?
May Allah bless you, Faisal, for how you loved me when I could not even love myself

And Sasha and Sergey. Man I want to shake so much sense into Sasha and yet I don't blame him at the same time,
“What color, what shape, what form did his pain, his anguish take?”
but I also want to know how and where do they progress from the end? I feel like the book ended on them beginning their lives and I WANT TO KNOW MORE.

If he’d learned one thing from Ethan, and from President Spiers, it was that they were stronger together. Everyone, always.

And with that, holy fuck, a part on the back, the blooming orchestra of applause and utter devotional gratitude to Tal because HOLY FUCK, the research within the series used is phenomenal and awe-inspiring. I don't care for the accuracy or the validity of where such actions and scenes differ the line of grayness, I think Tal did such a phenomenal job with this series, it was like I could read his heart and his love within the lines of his book and I am in so much awe for him. It's no wonder this series is one of his fan's favorite because I feel like I read a part of Tal's soul within it. (or maybe I'm just overdramatic as fuck 🙄😒)

In the length of his entire life, he could point to one unwavering truth: he loved Ethan to the depths of his soul. And Ethan loved him in return. And if that was the worth of his life, if that was what all he had, well—
He was the wealthiest man who had ever lived.

Regardless, gosh. What a series y'all. These characters are going to stay with me and the love, loyalty and utter perfection some of them shared is going to stay in my heart as a reminder of such beauty should always be cherished and protected.

Christ, they loved each other so deeply. Ethan had been absolutely gone for the man. Seeing Spiers come undone for Ethan soothed that niggling part of Welby’s brain that had always wondered if Ethan had given up too much. If he was too invested, and the president wasn’t all in, all the way.

Ethan’s absence was an ache in Jack’s heart, a sense of loss that hovered around him. [...] Being without Ethan, without that effortless love and care, was like a piece of himself was missing.

How many times could they have called it quits? Thrown in the towel, said it was too much, too strange, too difficult to be in love with each other? They’d kept going, kept loving, in spite of it all.

“I’ll be honest,” Anderson said. “I have never seen a couple change the face of the world as much as these two men have. Their love has redefined our entire planet. You both have consistently dared the world to change. To grow. To accept what is before them: two people in the deepest kind of love.
“And the world did change for you. Your love changed the world, continues to change the world, this very moment. Your love knows no boundaries, no limits. Yours is a love that poets have written about, great playwrights and bards of ages past. Yours is a love that will continue to redefine the world, long after this day has passed into history.”

Jack sat on the sand, his arms wrapped around his knees, and stared up into the night sky. “It’s breathtaking.”
Ethan gazed at Jack. “Yes. It is.”
Starlight and firelight painted diamonds over Jack, carving brilliance over his cheekbones and curling around his smile. Flickers of flame danced up his skin, like the fires in Ethan’s heart, his soul, coming alive and caressing his lover.

Jack leaned into the microphone, his voice booming around the room. “And I will remind the senator that the proper address is President Spiers-Reichenbach.”

inital reaction:
I think my brain cracked from the amount of research this series held.

Still love it

I won't be saying much. Alot of my fellow reviewsers have already written amazing reviews for this amazing trilogy.

I will just leave you with some of my fave quotes:

You are everything to me.” He held Faisal’s gaze, staring into his eyes. “I’m fighting this fight to go home,” he breathed, barely whispering at all. “Home to us. I want our life back. I want to be by your side every day, from now until the end of time.”

“I am already weak. Weakened by cowardice. By shame. By want.” He stared into Sasha’s wet gaze. “I broke when you left. A part of me flew off into the skies with you, and I want that back. I already love you, Sasha. I’m already weakened by this, by these feelings. I want to be strong again.” He turned his hand over in the sand, palm up, and slid it toward Sasha. “Strong with you.”

“I will always choose you first. You are my everything. Always.”

Finished! I could have just given this five stars before I even started reading, because I knew Tal was going to outdo himself. Here's the extra stars it deserves! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

If you were blown away by the suspense, danger and excitement of Enemies of the State and Enemy of My Enemy, you'd better buckle up buttercup! Tal puts the pedal to the metal for this one. Our beloved characters are still battling the Machiavellian designs of their enemies and occasionally themselves and their own conflicted natures. The plot is balanced perfectly with romance as the steadfast love and devotion of Jack and Ethan adds needed touches of hope and joy. The developing relationships between Sasha and Sergey, Adam and Faisal are both beautiful and painful. Tal has written some fabulous love scenes, deeply emotional and tender, as well as passionate. There's not a lot of steam but a lot of quality!

As always, Tal has applied his personal knowledge, experiences and world travels and merged them with impeccable research to create the landscape, atmosphere and details for each setting and location. These stories are among the most immersive reading experiences I've had in my 5 decades of literature. My adrenaline was pumping, my heart beating faster, my tears falling harder throughout. It's a gorgeous depiction of pulse-pounding perils, menacing adventures, loyal friendships, tenderness and romance. Tensions run high as loyalties are tested and bitter betrayals shake the foundations of emotion and trust between friends, coworkers and allies.

Elizabeth Wall has a more prominent role as the new President and Scott, Daniels, Welby and Pete, along with other characters we've met before, have greater parts to play. The multiple POV's are perfectly written; clear and distinct "voices" changing smoothly within the narrative. It adds so much depth as they react individually to the situations at hand. It also reinforces the mental and emotional connections between each couple and intensifies the evil and dark intentions of their enemies.

I could go on and on but my opinion of the stellar quality of Tal's writing has remained unchanged with each book he writes. This is a must read for everyone!

*High-pitched fanqirl squeal* it's here! Interrupt my reading at your own risk.

Enemy Within wrecked my heart so many times over. This book was nonstop action, heartache and assholery in the form of General Madigan. Every chapter something was changing, and a secret was revealed that had the potential to shatter everything that Jack and Ethan had been working towards.

The sheer amount of action that happened in this book left my mind reeling. From submarines to waterboarding and even betrayals there was never a moment where I could have predicted the outcome of this story. Being back with Jack, Ethan, Adam, Faisal, Sergey and Sasha was so much like coming home that every moment they felt terror I felt it too. Not only for them but for the people they loved and everything that they were fighting for.

“He didn’t want to let that memory go, let it become just one blip in a long line of prayers. If he’d known how much those moments, those breaths, those whispered words would come to mean, he’d have paid more attention. Kept every moment in his memories, like capturing fireflies in a jar.”

Jack & Ethan will honestly always have my heart. Everything about their relationship from the very start was such a force of passion and wills that rooting for them is like breathing. Their relationship might be at its strongest point it has ever been, but they still have a madman to take down before they can even begin to think about what their future might look like. Through separation, explosions and other forces trying to keep them apart Ethan and Jack are the driving force behind keeping America safe. They will stop at nothing to make sure that happens even if that means losing their lives in the process.

Sasha & Sergey broke my heart at every damn turn. Their "relationship" started off in "Enemy of My Enemy" and through all the hurt and confusing feelings they came together despite the odds. Every move Sasha made was to ensure Sergey's safety and make sure that he was able to bring Russia back from all the disaster it has faced. Through fear, feelings and mistakes both men want nothing more than for Russia to be restored but what if to ensure that happens Sasha must put everything else aside, including his feelings for Sergey?

Adam & Faisal had already lost so much before this story even started and as they come together time and time again to keep POTUS safe all that they lost was at the front of their minds. Adam couldn't stand the thought of everything he worked for being for nothing but losing Faisal again was no longer an option. Adam will do anything he can to ensure his safety even betraying everything he stands for. Faisal lost Adam before but not like this, never like this. How can he survive when the man he loves is gone because of him?

Honestly, Enemy Within might have been the best book in the trilogy so far. We get to see everything come to fruition including the people and they love. Every question was answered, every fearful thought you have had since the start will come true and you will be left shattered and broken. Don't fret though, Tal Bauer will put back those pieces (mostly??) and you will be left with all the feels. I will carry The Executive Office Series in my heart probably forever. Ethan, Jack, Adam, Faisal, Sasha and Sergey gave me so much not only in just their love stories but in the love and passion they shared for keeping the world safe.

My five stars encompass not just this book, but the entirety of this series which in essence is just one long story.

I’m not sure how many people I drove crazy while reading this book between my emails and mumbling and exclamations of shock. For those who were affected, sorry but holy cow this book!! It built on the momentum of everything in the first two books and hit the ground running. There was barely a moment where things let up, but when those moments came they were absolutely worth it.

If you haven’t read the prior books, you must before jumping in here. Madigan’s plan to remake the world to his liking is coming closer to fruition, we still don’t know who has been turned within the White House and Cooper’s team, the country still doesn’t know that Jack is alive and I don’t know how much more my heart could take but Tal Bauer certainly pushed me to my limits.

As our heroes, Jack and Ethan, Sasha and Sergey, Adam Cooper, his on again/off again lover Faisal and Cooper’s team of marines scramble to hunt down Madigan, the reader is treated to heart-stopping action over the frozen wastelands of Siberia, beneath the frozen sea and into Arctic, where Madigan is set to take the final steps in his plan for world destruction. Meanwhile, the US under President Wall is in crisis mode and seemingly on the brink of war while the Secret Service and the White House staff try to ferret out a mole. Tensions are high, trust is low and everyone has reached their breaking point.

Enemy Within is epic in its length and the story it undertakes. It rivals any action film with tense scenes of combat, nervous anticipation, heart-stopping action and all sorts of mayhem. Like any good action film you will also have to suspend disbelief with regard to just how much our heroes can take without breaking. The amount of detail Tal Bauer has put into this book, especially the scenes onboard the Honolulu will have you right there with the characters, adrenaline spiking and nerves on edge.

While the action and war games drive the story there is still time for the various couples to share some personal moments. Jack and Ethan have an unbreakable bond and become an even stronger as the story progresses. They are like two halves of a whole and every time they are together they just light up the pages. Sergey and Sasha have a lot to work out. Their story took some surprising turns and they really struggle to decide if they can have a future together. Both men are stubborn and neither is all that good at talking, but they always look out for each other. The third couple, Adam and Faisal, have had the longest, most turbulent history together. These are the two men who, on more than one occasion, broke my heart, sharing one of the most emotional, gut-wrenchingly beautiful scenes in the book. The story doesn't end with the saving of the world though. Each couple has to face reality once the action ends and their lives resume.

Not for the faint of heart, Enemy Within is an action packed, emotionally draining ending to this series. While the series may be over, I have to hope that with the way it ended we haven’t seen the last of these guys. I’d be happy to continue reading about any or all of them. (And if you love them as much as I do and haven’t done so yet, check out Tal Bauer’s blog at http://talbauerwrites.com/blog/bauers... for Bauer’s Bytes which has some great extras.)

OMG, oh my God people this book is beyond exceptional, it wraps up the trilogy in an almost perfect fashion but still leaves a hint behind that there could be more.

And believe me, I want more. Who are the missing clones, will Jack and Ethan head up the secret black ops department, will Sergey and Sasha get married, will Faisal become King with Adam by his side?! I NEED to know these things.

The tension and pacing throughout this book left me breathless. Who was going to be the other hidden traitor? I guessed rightly with one as soon as I saw his name.

I think I spent half this book praying the traitors wouldn't be Scott, Levi, Welby, Doc, Colman, the press guys, Elizabeth...

There were so many fantastic secondary characters where it would have killed me to read them as one of the traitors

And it was still a shock when it came. And it came with such a vengeance, the tension jacked up to such a level I could actually feel my pulse racing.

I should also say that the amount of research and detailing which has gone into this book is exemplary, it deserves a world of five stars on that basis alone but when added to the rest, it takes this book somewhere beyond just an enjoyable read and into the stratosphere.

I want to see these books on TV or the big screen, they have every single ingredient needed for a true blockbuster and hopefully one day, when the world catches up that love between two men is just as romantic and vital as a heterosexual pairing, we may just get it.

Bravo Tal for writing a trilogy of books which will forever sit on my must be read favourites shelf.

3-3.5 stars.

I loved the first book in series A LOT!
The second one was not as good, but I still enjoyed it.
Here, I skimmed through the way too many action scenes, political plotting, traitors everywhere etc. it was like reading about Air Force One combined with The Escape from Alcatraz and The Hunt for Red October all at once.
It just got too much. even for me :(

I wished for more romance throughout the reading.

Another thing: as an Arabic speaker, the author used the words Whalla and Yhalla in the wrong context more than once in the story.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO GIVE THIS BOOK MORE THAN 5 STARS?? LIKE 6 STARS OR SOMETHING???

Fuckkk, this has to be one of my favorite book series ever. And this book was amazing ending to the series. And yes, it's long (almost 500 pages) but it is so worth it to read. I spent like all of yesterday and practically all of today reading it. What a ride!

In this book, we get back to the three couples, Jack and Ethan, Sergey and Sasha, and Adam and Faisal. Jack and Ethan are still the ultimate focus, but the other two couples get their due as well.

Wow, what a crazy ride, this one, but it was the best one, so I feel like

because of all the shit that went down and

at the same time.

This was tense, exciting, painful, romantic, scary and kept my pulse pounding, kept me flipping from page to page needing to know what happened next.

Really, the only thing that made me pause and maybe read slower than usual was talk about military stuff, that had all those technical terms, and talk about this top secret thing or that, and so on. All the political talk that kinda spun my head at times, because I don't know any of this stuff. But even when the story moved away from Jack and Ethan, I was IN this story. I found myself invested with the other two couples as well, and hoping for their happy ending too.

Yes, I was here mainly for Jack and Ethan, but that didn't mean the rest didn't hold my attention.

This book was like an awesome well made action movie. With romance. And some sex ;). Yeah, we don't get a TON of sex, but we get a substantial amount, a good amount - and it made me happy. I mean, Jack and Ethan do it once in the middle and...oh man it's awesome. (I mean, everytime they do it its amazing, but I couldn't believe these two did it there at that time in that situation. It was incredibly hot, actually .

And what a back and forth ride this was. Tal actually cut it close SO many times and it had my heart beating so fast and wondering if the worst would happen - but as I tagged for this, there is a happy ending, for all the couples.

Doesn't mean they don't all go through hell before that happens. DAMN. I kept going "HOW are they going to survive this? Oh shit, they're not - bUT OF FUCK SOMEHOW THEY DID!"

But then I would breathe a sigh of relief as our favorite heroes made it through another life or death situation.

Some might think this book over the top, or unrealistic, but I think it was pretty damn realistic if someone ever did try and end the world. In fact, it was the most rooted-in-reality "villain tries to end the world" story I've ever read. Yeah, it seems like something that would never happen - but that is what a lot of fiction is, wondering over things that will probably never happen in real life, but COULD, if something was slightly different about the world, or if there was that one person in the world vile and horrible enough to try and kill billions and billions of people.

I mean, thank fucking god something like this will most likely never happen - we all hope - and so it's just a fictional story, because something like this happening would be really terrifying (and because we can't write reality, things would probably go even worse than they do in these books, which is saying something, because shit happens in this book. Not fun things).

But if something like this DID happen? If there was some crazy guy insane enough to do this, and build a following, if you think of that, then I don't feel like this story is too out there or over the top or something you need to suspend your disbelief for. Like...what WOULD happen if the world almost came to an end?

And of course the person trying to end the world had to be an American lol. Americans suck yeahhhh. (Nah but it wasn't just Madigan, it was many others too. But Madigan started it ugh.)

All our three couples go through separations, fear the other is dead, and believing the other is dead, and so many heart stopping moments, moments that make you hold you breath thinking "this is it, Tal is actually going to kill everyone"

But of course, after this journey we've been on with Jack and Ethan and the others, it didn't end like that. It was no picnic, but they survived.

And the most important thing for me was that Jack and Ethan get their happy ending and they did and just made my heart melt and *happy sigh* these two together are just unstoppable. Their love, in a way, kinda saved the whole damned world. I love that. I love that their love was so strong, that nothing, not even the threat of the end of the world, could tear them apart, even though Madigan definitely tried.

We see the characters tested, the romances tested (although Jack and Ethan's romance least of all because they already went through the test to their romance in book two) and their will tested. We get introduced to a few new characters, and they added to the story. We finally learned who all the bad guys are - well, actually at the end it is made clear that there are probably a lot more of Madigan's people out there that we'll never know about. But .

I do have to say that I think the reveal of the mole(s) would have had a bigger impact if it had been someone close to Ethan and Jack, from a storytelling point, but I guess with all the pain and suffering they had already been going through, if it had been . But I was still surprised by the moles, and it still shocked me, made me think "why didn't I see it!" like the characters, so I guess it's okay that the reveal wasn't as horrible as I feared ;).

This is definitely recommended. It's a wonderful end to the series, and I just love love loved it.

Some might find it slow, but realistically all of these things would be happening at once, and it needed to go from place to place so we could get the whole story. Also, I loved how the book took the time to wrap things up as well, to not end it abruptly.

Just, a masterful end to the series, and I know I'll be rereading my favorite parts of the series over and over and over again.

Just go read it if you haven't yet! :D

So I’m back with another contrary opinion. I liked this. I wanted to love it, but just couldn’t.

So what did I like? Jack and Ethan’s hard-won HEA. Adam’s and Faisal’s improbable romance. Plus Jack finally takes out psycho Madigan in the most satisfying way.

What didn’t I like? Well settle in honey. If I could sum up my criticism in one phrase it would be too much. Too much espionage and action (and not enough romance). Too many kissy-face love declarations in the middle of shootouts with bad guys. Too long (could lose 150 pages). Too much about Siberia and the Arctic (really don’t want a geography lesson). Too much about nuclear reactors and submarines (Oh Gawd the minutiae!). Too many couples (three’s a crowd!). I obviously loved Jack and Ethan, and Adam & Faisal were a sweet addition, but then Sergey and Sasha was just going overboard. Too fantastical (Adam’s and Faisal’s HEA was so beyond the realm of possibility that I couldn’t suspend my disbelief.) And of course way too much overwrought prose.
