Our leaders must be accessible. They must be trustworthy. If our leadership is not accessible, honest, and accountable, we run the risk of our nation sliding into a degradation of democracy and a despairing illusion of freedom.

“Congratulations, Mr. President. You’re a damn lucky man.” He gripped Ethan’s shoulder. “This guy is something else.”
“I am.” Jack smiled, laughing at the flush Ethan felt rising on his cheeks. “I really am the luckiest man on the planet.”
“And don’t forget it.” Scott's voice was teasing, but his eyes had a sheen to them, a hardness, an unspoken promise.
“I will always choose you first. You are my everything. Always.”

But most of all, he’d chosen Ethan, time and again. And he’d never regret that.
Ethan’s eyes, his gaze fixed on Jack’s, filled with a brilliance to rival the sun
Facing Leslie had revealed to Jack that his love for Ethan truly was bone-deep. Something that lived and breathed in his soul. Something that couldn’t be broken and couldn’t end, he’d said. “I was never more certain of anything in my life than coming back to you. Choosing you, Ethan, over everything.”There was nothing in the world that could stop their love. Nothing at all.
He swore he heard Ethan’s heart, beating in time with his own.
Out in the wilderness, in the forest, they’d fallen into a different kind of caretaking. A sharing of two lives, each supporting the other’s existence. It was primal, in a way, how they had fused together. Half of his life was in Jack’s hands, and instead of feeling vulnerable, it was the most natural feeling in the world. Two souls in tandem with each other: his and Ethan’s. Being without his other half felt like a piece of his own heart, his own soul, was missing.
He’d never known it was possible to love someone this deeply, this entirely. His whole world had been remade, and even himself, reborn into a new man. A man who shared half a life, and half of his soul, with the one person who meant everything. With Jack.
Somewhere, between national security and the safety of the world, between trying to prevent an apocalypse and looking into a man’s eyes, there was a line in the sand called loyalty. Love, even.
But he’d also found Ethan. Had fallen in love with him, and found the man who’d unlocked the depths of his soul. Found the love of his life.
That was true. Their love, their life together. What they built. What they shared. The vows they made, first by their choices and their actions, and then by their rings and words. Their love was the foundation of his life, the very definition, the meaning of his life. Beyond politics, beyond the presidency, beyond even the world; Ethan was everything that made his days worth waking up for.
He and Sergey, two middle-aged men. Ethan and Sasha, men too devoted for their own good, with hearts and souls too big for this world. And Scott, a beacon of eternal friendship, of fidelity, enough to make him want to weep.
Jack tried to smile, but it wavered, and then fell. He looked down, exhaling shakily. How could he ever thank Scott the way he deserved? From the first moment until the last, Scott had been their steadfast friend, a bulwark against the world. How many times had Scott saved their lives? Stood up for them? Helped them when no one else would? How many drives had Scott done for each of them? From the big gestures to the tiny. How many times had he turned from the front seat with a friendly smile, just doing what he could to help?
May Allah bless you, Faisal, for how you loved me when I could not even love myself
If he’d learned one thing from Ethan, and from President Spiers, it was that they were stronger together. Everyone, always.
In the length of his entire life, he could point to one unwavering truth: he loved Ethan to the depths of his soul. And Ethan loved him in return. And if that was the worth of his life, if that was what all he had, well—
He was the wealthiest man who had ever lived.
Christ, they loved each other so deeply. Ethan had been absolutely gone for the man. Seeing Spiers come undone for Ethan soothed that niggling part of Welby’s brain that had always wondered if Ethan had given up too much. If he was too invested, and the president wasn’t all in, all the way.Ethan’s absence was an ache in Jack’s heart, a sense of loss that hovered around him. [...] Being without Ethan, without that effortless love and care, was like a piece of himself was missing.
How many times could they have called it quits? Thrown in the towel, said it was too much, too strange, too difficult to be in love with each other? They’d kept going, kept loving, in spite of it all.“I’ll be honest,” Anderson said. “I have never seen a couple change the face of the world as much as these two men have. Their love has redefined our entire planet. You both have consistently dared the world to change. To grow. To accept what is before them: two people in the deepest kind of love.
“And the world did change for you. Your love changed the world, continues to change the world, this very moment. Your love knows no boundaries, no limits. Yours is a love that poets have written about, great playwrights and bards of ages past. Yours is a love that will continue to redefine the world, long after this day has passed into history.”Jack sat on the sand, his arms wrapped around his knees, and stared up into the night sky. “It’s breathtaking.”
Ethan gazed at Jack. “Yes. It is.”
Starlight and firelight painted diamonds over Jack, carving brilliance over his cheekbones and curling around his smile. Flickers of flame danced up his skin, like the fires in Ethan’s heart, his soul, coming alive and caressing his lover.Jack leaned into the microphone, his voice booming around the room. “And I will remind the senator that the proper address is President Spiers-Reichenbach.”
inital reaction:
I think my brain cracked from the amount of research this series held.
