A menacing wasteland. A destructive new weapon. A planet on the edge of catastrophe.
Sheriff Duke can’t rest. There’s no time to slow down. The threats are unending. The enemy unyielding.
If he wants to stop the apocalypse, he’ll have to cross a treacherous wasteland where the cannibals and murderers are the least of his worries, and the creatures infesting the landscape aren’t the most dangerous thing in his path.
The race is on, the doomsday clock is counting down, and if he fails it will be more than his wife and child that are caught in the fallout.
M.R. Forbes is the author of a growing number of science-fiction series including Rebellion, War Eternal, Chaos of the Covenant, Stars End, and the Forgotten novels. Having spent his childhood trying to read every sci-fi novel he could find (and write his own too), play every sci-fi video game he could get his hands on, and see every sci-fi movie that made it into the theater, he has a true love of the genre across every medium. He works hard to bring that same energy to his own stories, with a continuing goal to entertain, delight, fascinate, and surprise.
He maintains a true appreciation for his readers and is always happy to hear from them.

One could think that by reaching book 3 (and this really being book 6) in the series, everything would start getting boringly predictable. This, however, was absolutely awesome. After the previous book being somewhat more slow-paced, this book finally tackled some important questions such as what the trife are and where they come from. And guess what? Answering those questions takes everything we knew so far to a whole new level and introduces even more mind-blowing questions!
As many others have mentioned, you'd think after six books, the story might get stale. That the world and his characters might start to not keep you pinned to your seat, turning pages.
This series burns. You can't look away, can't put it down. Can't stop turning the pages because there's a new twist, a new hurt, a new gut-punching take the hope away from Hayden or Nathan and crush under the heel of your iron boot moment waiting to grab you and keep you reading.
After enduring so much, Hayden seems completely screwed. Yet his sense of justice, the goodness that makes him good never wanes. Never deserts him. You'll need to read on, to find out what happens next.
And Nathan, flip-flopping like a fish, full of internal conflict. He thinks he's resolved it then it turns round and bites him again and again and again. I don't think he knows himself, or if he does, he's in denial.
He has a long, long way to go.
As this story went on, I came to like the Iron General less. He's going to die in the next book. I just know it. And it will be his misguided loyalty to Tinker (insane on the brain!) and his plans for mass-extinction that bring about his demise.
And the adventure continues! There are some new characters here but be warned: don't get attached to any of them, because Forbes is fond of killing them off.
And Jonathan Davis continues to narrate brilliantly.
This is book 6 from the Sheriff Duke series (even if the focus is on Nathan). For me this is book 11 read on the invasion of trife and earth after and I can't stop reading.
The plot is really good, the aliens are interesting and diverse, the tech is awesome and there are some badass characters that steal your heart.
It is an addictive series, so if you start reading, prepare for a long journey. It's also interesting to me how Forbes brings together plots from 3 different series (on the same topic, period, and time) and slowly brings some light over what happened to the world and why (hopefully a more detailed why).
This continues the trials and tribulations of Sheriff Hayden Duke. One could , if you were into comic books, compare him to Batman. This man will not quit. The world that he lives in is doing everything to kill him, he is losing friends and allies left and right, but he will not quit. This particular book brings his struggle to protect the remaining people's of Earth closer and closer to an end time. His continuing fight to do what is right along with his high sense of morales is, to me, the guiding line of these books. But don't forget about all the danger, explosions, and bodies hitting the ground also. Good reading everyone.

Good characters, good plot ang great read. Sheriff Duke and Gus are accompanied by Isabelle, the protector robot and Pyro as he seeks to reason with Tinker, the turcost mad scientist. Nathan Stacker betrays him and is now working with the General, James Stacker and Tinker. It is action packed and slowly reveals his plan for Earth. Nathan has second thoughts about abandoning Duke but continues to work for Tinker and continues to rationalize his actions. Duke still seeks goodness and reason in his antagonists. The books ends with the usual cliffhanger episode leading to book 4.
Every book that sheriff Hayden is featured in he seems to get more and more badass! These books are fantastic and I can't rate them enough!
This one finishes off with a huge cliffhanger with Hayden not having any arms however I predict that tinker will give him some to go back to the pilgrim to get the artifact.
The action is constant throughout and the trife seem to have become a bit of a background enemy now. Once again humans are proving to be the most inhuman creatures in the universe!
Epic read, can't wait to start the fourth.

Another home run! Great read. Perfect addition to this amazing series. My only complaint is i wish i had started this series after you were through so i could binge read them all! Great work!
Another fantastic book. Do yourself a favor and wait til the exciting conclusion is published. Otherwise, share the long dark wait of Moria with me and fellow readers! But really, smart, well written and always unexpected twists and turns. 100% quality.
I was hooked from the start of book one and now book three is behind me... I can’t wait for the next installment! Now I know what it was like for my parents back in the 30s and 40s to have to wait for the next episode of Flash Gordon or Dick Tracy!
Interesting book a want to keep reading, even when you have things to do.
Don't know what you want in a review, but here goes my try. I like the characters, and the plot I can see a good ending coming, I don't see how anyone can trust the others, so show me.
Forbes writing flows well, but I keep waiting for a story line to end or at least come to a llogical stopping point. Death after death, it keeps going on and on and on..........
3.5 I hate Haydon and Nathan still fighting. By now they should be allies. Also Nathan still fighting for the wrong side also sucks. Then this confusing hallucination stuff. Damn, love this world-so much potential, the story could have been great. Too much not to like, too many disappointments.
I can't stop reading these stories. The characters have become friends . I can picture them in my mind while I read their story. I can't wait to get to the next book.
I would recommend any of these books to anyone who enjoys reading.
I was hooked from the first book in the series. The story continues with exceptional story telling, excellent plot lines and over all kept me interested. I ended up binging 7 books over 2.5 weeks. I can't say enough great things about this series.
I am exhausted! Reading one book to the next book, without a days rest has kept my imagination full throttle. I haven’t been able to put these book down for much respite. I highly recommend this series to any and all syfy readers!
Two men, on opposite sides, united by honour with more in common with each other than their allies. That and aliens to kill, a megalomaniac to thwart and interplanetary plots to unravel. Thank goodness there’s another page turner to come!
I thoroughly enjoy reading the Sheriff Duke series, but I'm very disappointed that all of the characters that get close to Duke dies. Really, Rhona, Gus and many others were killed off needlessly. Not everyone who believes in Duke needs to die.
Super cool stuff and I'm sure you will be happy to read this book
The series is about the same as most other times as well as the most powerful way to make life in the world better for people. It is about one man's fight to survive and save his family.
Hayden is a tough cookie, and as lucky as he can be, but does the dude ever get a break? It seems that he goes from the frying pan into the fire every time. I am really enjoying this series and I highly recommend these books....
