Across a Thousand Miles

Heart-stopping action...and heartwarming romance!

Rebecca Reed and Bill (Mac) MacKenzie have nothing in common...except their desire to run the Yukon Quest.

She's an experienced musher who knows only too well how humbling the northern landscape can be. She understands that the Quest--from Whitehorse, in the Yukon, to Fairbanks, Alaska, across a thousand miles of frozen trails--will take every ounce of strength and skill.

He's a cheechako, who doesn't know a dog harness from a doghouse. He's come north for a year to take care of his brother's dog team--and to escape his past. To Rebecca, his decision to run the Quest is not only arrogant, it's dangerous.

Race day arrives, and Mac and Rebecca struggle against the harsh elements. One night, in a fierce snowstorm, Rebecca and her team are blown over the mountain, and only the courage of the cheechako--the man she's beginning to love--can save her.

As I've said before, I'm a sucker for "lost in the wilderness" adventure stories, especially if they take place in mountains or snow. So when this book popped up during an Overdrive search, I had to give it a try. But you never know what you'll get with a story like this. To make it work the author has to convince me they understand what it must be like to drive a team day after exhausting day through frigid temperatures. And their characters can't be super heroes who do it without a struggle or problem, because where's the fun in reading about that? So I started this book with trepidation.

I appreciated that the book established the characters and their situations first and gradually led into the race. But I had a couple of problems with the beginning. Both MCs make some serious mistakes early on, Mac because he's feeling reckless and over confident, Rebecca because - well, I don't know. I never felt like Rebecca made sense to me. Who is she, besides a stubborn young widow? I couldn't tell. And her mistake, felt particularly careless to me, and could have resulted in serious injury. What was she thinking? She seemed like someone who should know better, so not getting an explanation for this really bugged me. I finally had to just let both characters mistakes go and keep on reading the story.

Once the race started the strengths of the story were clear. I believe the author spent time really researching what running such a race would be like. She seemed to understand how the race works, different strategies, and how the personalities of the characters would effect the way they ran it. At one point

A big fan of cold, snowy romance! Add some dogs and I'm in. Well written, and really interesting characters.

Loved it! Lots of story and not all jumping in bed to burn up a few pages. I'm always a bit ashamed to have things like this show up on my Read shelf because of the whole "romance" thing. This was a great read about life with sled dogs and the rest was just a happy ending.
