He’s looking for control. She’s looking for freedom. What they find are the broken pieces of each other.
Since Jonathan Ellis left his hometown at the age of 17, he was considered an adult by the courts. He had wealth, intelligence, looks, and enough sexual experience to satisfy any woman he chose. The life he walked away from was riddled with violence, sexual deviancy, and death. He went to college looking for normalcy, but there’s no escaping the white heat of depravity flowing through his veins… not even for her.
Vivian Bruno knows who she is and what she wants. Although she is shy, and her sexual experiences have all been forced, she is confident she can have a normal relationship. She is alone in the world and does not want to cede her new-found control for any reason, but Jonathan isn’t just any reason. What he makes her feel just may be worth her willing submission.
Jonathan and Vivian are a match made in the underbelly of southern traditions, family secrets, and swallowed insecurities and hurts. Will they somehow see a way to take all the hurt and broken pieces to build something stronger than their pain? Or will he break her in the most destructive way imaginable?

“You wanted me too much. You didn’t look like you would be able to stop yourself if you got close to me, and you looked like you would just take whatever you wanted from me. Take my choice away from me, again.”

John with a troubled childhood understands his Dom personality with help of an elder woman. After losing everyone in life and left with loads of money, he meets Vivian who he wants to be his Sub and also love of his life. This is the first book of the series and explores about leads understanding each other and sets premise for future books.
This book is like Fifty shades of Grey in more raw format with YA characters. When John and Vivian are not engaged erm... in other activities, they seem to have very intriguing personalities. I wish that was explored more. Everything about their love and relationship was insta and fast except the sex part. At least I felt so.
This book comes with strong disclaimer about explicit content and it is rightly so. It is definitely not for everyone. However, for someone who enjoy this genre (I guess not me) , it will be a treat.
The writing is very good. Characters are very well sketched. Lead for the next book in the series is also well placed.
First of all I would like to thank Booktasters who introduced Ella Shawn to me and then I thank Ella Shawn for giving me an opportunity to read and review one of your book. Looking forward to read more books written by you. At first when I started reading this book I understood that its not exactly a romantic series. Thanks to the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, which introduced the dominant submissive relation to its viewers. When I further proceeded my reading, I understood that this is a different type of romantic series. But yes very raw, full of emotions. Progressing through, some portions of the story had me well up. By the end of it I understood about the author and the way of writing. I’m looking forward to read the next part of this book because I want to know more what happened in Vivians and John’s life after falling deeply in love with these characters.
First of all, I wanted to thank @BookTasters via Twitter for being the bridge between me and the author, Ms. Ella Shawn. Overall, I really enjoyed reading the book, but somehow, I took a lot of time in reading it because of the themes of the novel.
When reading a book, I always want to see the connection of the series/title to the main plot of the story. And while reading Ms. Shawn's book, I'm glad she didn't do a lot of spoon feeding. As the story progresses, she shows just how vulnerable Johnathan R. Ellis is, despite giving off the strong alpha male facade. His dark experiences during his adolescent years, including his encounter with Violet, who molded him to become who he is in the present time.
Enter Vivian Bruno, a young woman who, to me, as well as to Johnathan, is literally a ball of sunshine. Her character was pretty hard to understand, probably because one moment, she's sweet, and the next thing I know, she's hot tempered and ready to take on a fight. However, I have my own personal hunches as to what was happening to her, and it's good that the author took time in revealing that. Just like Johnathan, young Vivian was also a broken soul. But, despite being broken, she still have a full grasp of reality and who she really is and what's she's capable of.
The characters of this story are beautifully written. Both of them had skeletons in their closets, but they showed courage and they are willing to compromise in order to keep on living and to keep the love that they have.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. Truth be told, I was already familiar with the author's writing style, however, it wasn't until when I finished the book did I know what that writing style was called. Southern Gothic style, is a writing style that explores the south, darker themes of erotic and romance, society, and other relevant social issues.
This book was provided for free for a review. I must admit, I will not finish this book. I should have read the entire description that included the disclaimer before I agreed to read it. My bad. The book is good for what it is. If you are into erotica and very strong abuse, D/S story, this is the book for you. I rated it in the middle for a few reasons. Just because the book is not for me does not make it a bad book. I don't feel the cover or the beginning of the blurb indicated the extremeness of the content. I fell the disclaimer should be sooner in the blurb, could be just me. It is well written and the scenes are very descriptive. I think it could use another proofread to eliminate the typos.
This dark erotic romance very much reminded me of 50 Shades of Grey at first. The main character’s past is littered with tragedy and the pursuit of control over his own life, which he gains through the power of a Dom. I was pleasantly surprised, as I kept reading, to find that within this erotic tale was a sweet love story. The characters blossomed into wonderfully unique personalities and now, after reading the entire story, I’d say this work stands apart from others in its genre. Shawn, it’s author, has weaves together a twisted dark romance that anyone could enjoy if they give in to their darker thoughts for a bit. Overall, this was a good read.
The plot is based on two young people- Vivian Bruno and Jonathan Ellis who are either meant to be together or kill each other.
📚 The characters have grown into very distinctive personalities, and I believe, that now that I have read the entire storey this novel is distinctive from the others in its type.
📚 With a distressed childhood, John, helped by an elderly woman, understands his Dom personality. He meets Vivian, who he wants to be his sub and also love for his life, after losing everyone in life and left him with a heap of money.
📚 I really liked the minor surprises were unexpectedly good to bring to the full plot. There is also the next book in the series. It was a good overall reading.
Broken Souls by Ella Shawn This is the story of John Ellis, a young man with a dark and violent past. When he meets Vivian Bruno, a freshman at the University he attends, he must make her his. Vivian seems to have her own secrets about an abusive past. Together they attempt to forge a relationship that will heal what is broken inside them and still fulfill the needs that drive their desires. The genre is BESM Erotica, and there is a LOT of that. It is Fifty Shades of Grey on steroids. So, if you enjoyed that series, you might enjoy this one. D.W. Hogan author of Unbroken Bonds and contributing author in Feisty Deeds anthology
Finding a good erotic romance novel is really, really hard. Luckily, this one falls in that category. Ella Shawn did an amazing job with this book, I loved it from the first chapter all the way to the finish. Although, there are too much drama for my taste, in certain parts of the books, it really didn't made me give up on it. And that is saying something. The only problem I have is that we didn't get to find anything about Vivian, there were as couple of hints, but nothing major. Other than that this book is deliciously awesome. Highly recommended.
Miss Ella went HARD (pun intended) on this one. This book is hot, steamy and leaves you wanting more and more. Nothing like you’ve ever seen before, be prepared to fall in love with the characters and their beautiful journeys. A roller coaster of emotions and so much more!
